Title: Summer '07 Mix CD thread?
Post by: amok on 17 Jul 2007, 09:58
I ran a search in the last couple of months and couldn't find anything, so sorry if this is a dupe.

This might seem a bit redundant given the Sendspace thread up top (you kids with your mp3s and rock'n'roll 8-track tapes) but I was wondering if anyone would be interested in setting up another mix swap, as I know personally that I've gotten into quite a few quality bands through CDs I've received from here; and hell, they're fun to make too.

Sign up in a post below if you're interested in participating. These things never run perfectly smoothly because of computer and real-life issues, but please don't do a hit-and-run and sign up, get paired with someone, then never show your face again!

No time limit as of yet, we'll see how quickly people hop on this before setting a deadline for signin' up. Will update the first post every day or two with the list of participants.

Go!

We haven't done one of these for a while.

In fact last time Storm and I were going to send one to each other and we never did. Because we were both pretty busy/lazy.

But I will totally get one out there.

In. Had fun with the last one. I might toss in a demo if it gets finished in time.

Have you thought about how we find out who sends who a cd? (Partners or random list or what.) Just curious!

The partners system works better. The last mix exchange I was involved in worked on the partner system, and I got my mix, and the guy got his. Then again, we traded them in person.
The first mix exchange happened here that I was involved in was a random 'pass it on' system, it was a disaster. People complaining about not receiving their mixes all over the place.

So I guess we look for partners now. Just a heads up, the last 5 gigs of music I downloaded was out of print.

I'm in, as always. Also, we need a theme. We already did general 'summer' mixes last year.

When I move out of my parents' house it won't be weird for me to get random packages. If you want to, we can finally do that exchange then.

Now listen here.

I'd love to do something like this but I've been fucked over twice consecuitively as far as someone to send a CD to and someone to receive a CD from.

Now, I live in England and I'm mostly broke, so sending to someone else English would be beneficial to me. However I have no problem who sends the CD to me.

I don't know most people here as well as, well, most people here (try saying that 5 times fast) but I also happen to live in England and not have a problem who sends the CD to me. It's a match made in heaven :D

re: themes, I was thinking maybe when people pair up they could decide between em on a theme instead of setting an overall one? I suck at that kinda thing anyway, and it'd keep things more varied.

So are we going to go out and pair ourselves up by our own choice or are we going to have some kind of fun random drawing at some point?

As a newbie, I'd prefer the latter. Unless somebody wants to take a flyer on meh.

I am in!

I am also for not choosing your own partners, and 100% for a theme as long as it is a good one.
Title: Re: Summer '07 Mix CD thread?
Post by: Spinless on 17 Jul 2007, 16:07
I've found a partner I'm happy with (it's khar), and I can think of a million reasons why the partner system works better.

In the last exchange, you could either choose your partner or wait for the OP to pair you with somebody. That system worked well.

If you have a partner you found on your own, post their username.
If you're waiting to be paired up, say so.
If you have restictions on where you can mail to then say so.

Amok, I'l help you partner everybody up if it's too daunting? I have a LOT of free time on my hands.
Title: Re: Summer '07 Mix CD thread?

I'm up for pairings but I'd rather not select my own partner, you know? It's better if it's a surprise.
Title: Re: Summer '07 Mix CD thread?
Post by: Spinless on 17 Jul 2007, 16:22
I suggested 'Beginning, Middle and End' as a theme, because it's vague enough to do anything with, but is still a theme.

Give your mix a clearly defined beginning, middle and end.

I can mail stuff to wherever.

So long as I don't have to mail overseas, I'm in. I can't really afford much more postage, now that I'll have to go buy more blank CDs. I'm completely out.

But other than that, random it is!

I favor random partners (minus those who want to partner up with someone in their own country, which is understandable). Also, I don't mind sending it out of the US, if that's important. I may or may not have a theme. We'll see.

I am game for a random partner. If you're pairing yourselves, you don't really need the mix exchange organization or anything, as I see it.
Theme-wise, I don't mind either way.

I don't want to choose my partner, it would be neater to send it to someone randomly.

Also themes are fun
Title: Re: Summer '07 Mix CD thread?
Post by: Thrillho on 19 Jul 2007, 16:46
Mine's looking like it's going to be 24 tracks, representing a day. One track for each hour. It's not working out as well as I suspected... I may just do it as my Summer Days and Summer Nights disc instead.
Title: Re: Summer '07 Mix CD thread?
Post by: amok on 20 Jul 2007, 09:52
I'm awful at themes but I'll at least try and make sure it has a well-defined beginning and end. Middle might be more tricky. ;)
Title: Re: Summer '07 Mix CD thread?
Post by: Thrillho on 20 Jul 2007, 10:01
I've decided it's going to be in a series of suites, songs edited together, instead, representing various phases of a 24 hour period. Dunno how many discs it'll end up being

Trading cds through the mail eh?  Reminds me of when I started to dabble in bootleg trading, then I ran out of cash and cds.    Alright I'm up for it, just gotta go out and buy some more blanks.  I'm not sure if anyone would be interested in the music I listen to though.  And since no one here really knows me I'll take any partner, preferably within the US, but not a requirement.  If you'd actually care to see what I listen to: My account on RYM (http://www.rateyourmusic.com/~Marik)
If there ends up with an odd number of people, I can just withdraw if it comes down to it.

You listen to art rock and therefore are ok in my book. And I think if it ends up with an odd number, there's a group of three instead of two.

Alright, this thread hasn't seen action in four days. Bump.
Amok is running the show pretty much, so he decides when the thread is closed, but if you want in on this then you should DEFINITELY get in before the end of the week.
I'm going to start researching all of you guyses music now through a combination of your forum post and google. Be afraid.

I too would prefer a U.S. partner if possible. It's not totally essential but it would help. I had to take a week off of work b/c one of the little kids at camp gave me some virus so I lost a lot of money that I sorta already spent. Anyway, the less in postage the better.

I'm thinking about participating in this.. but...

If i was able to host the mix tape, would that work too, my CD burner just died yesterday, and i'm currently broke.

So if i was able to do that would i be able to participate?

Sure, a cassette works just as well if you package it up nicely. It can work better if you do it right due to the 'double sides' thing. I considered making a cassette for this one just because I thought it'd be fun, but since I'm making the playlist on iTunes it'd be easier to just put it to disc.

I don't know why i said mix tape(i was probably reading something that said that), i meant If i could Upload them to a Webspace, Would it still be acceptable.
Title: Re: Summer '07 Mix CD thread?
Post by: Spinless on 25 Jul 2007, 20:08
Well, the point of this is that is it nice to have something physical that was made with love and attention or something. We've had a few sendspace threads for mixes uploaded to the internet, you should be able to find them with the search function.

I think i got it working, no guarentees though.

I'll sign up for this. But if i can't keep it working the person will get the songs no matter what.

Ok guys, I can't be in on this but I do have a mix up to give away. About a year ago I was in a mixtape exchange thing on a music community website and I exchanged mixtapes with a nice girl from Jerusalem. I decided to make her another mixtape and it just got dragged over for a few months, until about three months ago when she went to India and I haven't hared from her since.

So I have a mixtape ready to be sent, loosely Jazz themed.

first to PM me their address gets it! Keep in mind that I do not have a lot of free time currently and it would probably take me some time to actually send it to you (I also have horrendous hand writing).

Tracklist:

1. Erik Truffaz - Mantis
2. Matthew Shipp - Cohesion
3. Chick Corea & Return To Forever - Crystal Silence
4. Medeski, Martin & Wood - The Edge of Night
5. Beastie Boys - Jimmy James
6. DJ Shadow - Midnight in a Perfect World
7. Archie Shepp - Blues for Brother George Jackson
8. Charlie Haden & Kenny Barron - Twilight Song
9. Electric Masada - Kedem
10. Kaly Live Dub - Jestering
11. Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil

Post by: amok on 28 Jul 2007, 14:23
Ah no worries, the more tunes the better as far as I'm concerned ;) mine's only gonna spill over onto three CDs though...
Title: Re: Summer '07 Mix CD thread?
Post by: TheFuriousWombat on 28 Jul 2007, 14:29
I think mine will go from quiet to loud to noisy ambiance. The plan is to have one very long track in each section bookended by two or three shorter tracks before and after each. It will probably be one cd for each section. That's the idea anyway.

EDIT:

I think I've changed my mind. I realized that I only have a handful of cds, a little bit of money, and that lots of people wouldn't want to hear such a long mix. Now the idea is three long tracks with one short track between each and at the beginning. I'm still going for the quiet to loud to noisy ambiance thing I think. Estimated length is about 75 minutes.

I am currently pairing y'all up. Amok hasn't 'closed' the thread yet, so I guess there's still time to back out or drop in.
|My mix is only going to be one disc, I can't think of why I'd need two. Sure, I have more music I want to share than I can fit on one mix. But we have one of these for like every season, and a good number of us upload mixes in-between those. Why share it all with one person when I can upload a mix for anybody?

It's currently Sunday. I'll spend Tuesday pairing y'all. I'm going to spend monday shopping and being selfish. Your locations and request will be taken into account.

Guys, I hate to be a dick but I don't know if I can do this. I'm off to college in a couple days and won't really be able to mail things out for a bit. I don't want to make anyone wait forever so maybe I should bow out now. Would this pose much of a problem?

No problem dude, as usual real life comes first. :P I'm sure you won't have trouble arranging an individual trade when you're able to mail stuff again, either in this thread or elsewhere. Shit, drop me a line when you're ready and I'd be up for one. I'll leave you off the list for now.

Randomising now, watch this post!

Your partners are:

jimbunny - Lyrics
mfpole - E Spaceman
valley_parade - Johnny C
McTaggart - Slick
Misconception - InitiateFailure
SpellC - Emaline
Kai - Flaming Ostrich
tommydski - Pelay
Linds - CmonMiracle

If I forgot anyone, you're no longer interested, or you are interested but were too busy doing REALLY IMPORTANT THINGS to sign up on time, post now. Otherwise, start PMing each other and swapping stuff. Happy mixing!

Fair enough, it's just that... no one was doing that and I got the vibe that some wanted the list :D take yourselves off if you want anyway. I suck at this.

CmonMiracle told me that Spinless had told her she'd be paired with Tommy. I have no problem with this, since they wanted to be paired together. So if anyone needs a partner still, well hey. (If not, I'll send one to CmonMiracle anyways and she can just get/make two and be cooler than everyone else. Hehe.)

Post by: CmonMiracle on 08 Aug 2007, 11:42
I could definitely do two mixes, because Linds is cool also, I was just a bit confused by this whole pairing thing because I thought Spinless was going to do it and now Amok did it?

Ok
I'm sorry but for almost two weeks I wont have access to my full music library and blank CD's.
I can still get a start on this though, it just may take awhile.
Also, if it would be better for me to swap out now and worry sending it later, I can do that.

Okay, this thread has now confused the crap out of me. I thought I was too late to sign up, but now I'm thinking maybe I'm not but I don't know how I'd actually get someone to trade with... so I guess basically I'm up for doing a trade, I don't care where I post to, who I trade with or if it's tape or CD.

Fucked if I can figure out if I was meant to be though. If you guys want to use a list, there's one there. If you don't, PM each other and lock/delete this, because it's pretty useless  :?

I guess I sort of fucked this up? My bad.

Alright, if you don't have a partner, or you're not sure, PM me your situation and I'll get onto fixing it right away by pairing you up with another partnerless person or committing myself to sending another mix (I made two just in case this situation would arise).

Something happened to a friend of mine and I was way too distracted to concentrate on this for more than a couple of minutes at a time.

Damn, I was hoping this was like what I did on another forum I frequented about 4 years ago.  I basically came up with a theme for a mix CD (the theme for my first one was all instrumental tracks, no lyrics) and had anyone who wanted to participate anonymously send me an MP3 that fit the theme, then I compiled them into one mix CD and designed some cover art/tracklist and all for it, then offered an ISO and PNG for people to burn and print.

It turned out really awesome.  Then after whomever wanted to step up and create a theme, and spend the time collecting tracks and compiling it, would continue the legacy.

I'll participate. I'll use a few of the mixes I made for another forum exchange. Can't really assure anyone of their quality, but I'll try to make them diverse, at least.

So, I made the mix, and everything. And it was really awesome.

....but my person never pmed me, and I didn't know who they were, and I hate pming people, so I drew some other cover art for it and gave it to my best friend as a gift.

Ah gay, really? I sent it awhile ago but risked doing so in the middle of local postal strikes. It's probably been returned to my home address or something.

Same address?

Dude, you actually sent his mix? Before yours arrived? KER-RAZY.

Alright, the situation isn't as bad as I first thought. My machine still boots, but I need to get an adapter to plug in my external monitor, then I'll be back on track. Realistically, I can afford one in two weeks. I could probably steal one earlier than that.

Yeah same address. I just need to burn yours and send it along, didn't you say you were moving house or something? You still the same address?

I actually figured it would have already happened by now, lucky I saw the thread bumped with DK as last reply or I would've just assumed he'd got my CD. Not sure what the status re: everyone else is.

I'll bet she doesn't make me one in return because now she has a "Life". And "School". And a "Boyfriend".

Not that I'm bitter.

The answer is 'I do not know'.
