Um, what do you guys think of Conor Oberst?

I'm kind of one of the only defenders of Oberst here. WHile I think the new album lacked something poetically, I feel that overall he has the ability to write some amazingly emotional songs which provide a sort of existential comphort to his audience.

Conflicted. I usually prefer alt-country to melodramatic indie pop but every since he switched over, I have not really enjoyed any of his records and just wish he would go back to crying into a four track.

I am going to see him/them in apporoximately one month.

I have mixed feelings. I can listen to him in small doses. I even like him quite a bit in small doses. But then his voice and his lyrics start to grate on me and I have to turn it off. Two or three songs are all I can stomach at once. That said, I don't think he's untalented at all. He kinda wanted to be Elliott Smith and then he kinda wanted to make alt-country ala Seven Swans era Sufjan Stevens but he also wanted to make bizarre, not very good electronics driven and then...well his later stuff is not so good at all. So...like I said, mixed feelings.

I don't dislike Conner Oberst. He's one of the few mainstream artists with actual songwriting abilities and I can certainly appreciate that. The only Bright Eyes record I own is "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning", and when I first heard it I found it so starkly real that I couldn't get enough of it. But, I can't really listen to more than a few Bright Eyes songs in a row now. He's good but can become irritating in large doses.

Desaparecidos were pretty good.
AMAZING band.
Conor's only good songs are the ones where he's NOT trying to be Bob Dylan.

Guys, Conor Oberst IS a bit of a tit. But he's sticking to his guns, still boycotting things I don't agree with, sticking with his hometown label, growing a beard.
There are just some moments where you have to stop, think and agree with what the guy is doing.
I'm pretty sure most of us didn't make an album as good as The Uneventful Vacation before we hit 18 too.
He often makes a tit of himself, usually due to drugs, but I respect the guy, he's done a lot of things I know I couldn't do. Dislike his core fanbase though...
All of that said, he does look like a fruit don't he?

Anyway, "I'm wide awake its morning" is his best c.d then "letting off the happiness" is my second favorite. Although, I only listened to 3 Bright Eyes c.ds... and the third... "Casadega" which sucked ASS

I don't dislike him; I don't know the guy. I just find his vocal performance and general demeanour somewhat lacking in testosterone.

The implication that a man you dislike has a vagina because that would make him lesser somehow? Why would that make him lesser? Genuinely think about this implication and what it means for a while.
Who knows? Perhaps I'm a mysogynist deep down.
Still, perhaps this will satisfy you: Oberst is a man with little to none musical talent, an annoying voice, an annoying fan-base, a pretentious, irritating dickhead. Better? Inlander put it well when he said "weak limp wristed girly man"
However, "Conor Oberst is a whiny vagina" is a lot shorter then that statement, but covers all the bases. "Conor Oberst is a whiny indie fag" is another good one. Other people can discuss the implications regarding what words I use if they want, I couldn't really care less.
..Hopefully one day we'll find something to agree on, as you seem like a cool guy and I don't make it my aim to antagonize every one on this board.

I would reword my previous statement to just 'he is whiny' but then I might offend whiny people I mean I just don't know
