Title: Mafia!
Post by: Lines on 23 Oct 2007, 16:29
EDIT: HEY. If you're not playing the game, kindly don't post once we get started. Feel free to read and PM comments or whatever, but don't mess up the game for others. Be nice!

Ok, I looked it up on the search function, and it's been over a month since the last Werewolves game ended and I was curious if you guys would like to try a slightly different game called Mafia. It's almost the same as Werewolves, but instead of just having villagers and werewolves, in Mafia there are villagers, mafia members, a sheriff, and a medic. There's also the option of the village idiot. The sheriff asks the narrator every round whether or not a certain member is in the mafia, which is answered with a yes or a no. The medic tells the narrator every round who they want to save from attack, including themselves. The village idiot, if you guys want to use that character, tries to confuse everyone on purpose.

Does this sound like a good idea to you guys? If so, I'll take the first 15 18 people who want to play!

Players!
1. Boro_Bandito
2. Slick
3. Dark_Flame
4. ampersandwitch
5. RallyMonkey
6. Misconception

7. Mberan42
8. Blue_Kitty
9. KTkat

10. JimmytheSquid
11. Eris

12. I_is_Grammar
13. Thegreatbuddha
14. LordNagash
15. IronOxide
16. Gemmwah
17. Tyler
18. Ballard

I will update this list regularly.

I've played it online and in person before, and it works pretty well online. (More fun with a group of people in person, but hey.)

FYI, I'll narrate this round and then randomly assign you guys when we get all 15. (Sorry, Boro, no calling.)

Title: Re: Mafia!
Post by: Lines on 24 Oct 2007, 07:14
Can I be the werewolf?

I'm armed with silver bullets, wouldn't want you to die, my friend.

And to everyone, this game will get finished, I promise. If people do not respond to things within a reasonable amount of time, your character will die a tragic death. Or something. Wouldn't want things to get boring. ^_^\

P.S. I expanded the list, so 3 MORE PEOPLE CAN PLAY.

And here are the rules, just so everyone's clear:

Every "night" the town goes to "sleep". During this time all main characters PM me their choices. If you are Mafia, I will tell you who your partners are and you shall discuss who you want to kill and then PM me your decision. (If you feel like coming up with how they die, feel free to suggest something, or you can let me do it.) If you are the Sheriff, you will PM me a name of someone (only one name) who you suspect is in the mafia and I will answer you with a yes or a no. If you are the Medic, you will PM me the name of the person you wish to save from attack, which can include yourself. (You will not be told who the target is, you have to guess for yourself.) If you are the village idiot or a townsperson, you don't PM me anything, just wait until the round starts. When I PM you your role, I will repeat the instructions for your role for clarity.

When the round starts, we will discover who died and how. If someone is saved, you will only find out that there was an attempt on someone's life, but I won't say who was attacked. Either way, this is when the townspeople band together and try to decide who is in the mafia. In this thread, you post who you think is in the mafia. If you suspect more than one person, you can voice that, but please only accuse one person (for trial purposes). The first person to get 5 accusations (2 when there's less than 5 people) will be put on trial. During the trial, the accused will give their testimony for their defence and then the townspeople will vote Guilty or Not Guilty. Majority rules and if found guilty, the accused is sentenced to death (removed from the game), and if found innocent, they are allowed to continue to play and we move to the next round. We play until either all the mafia members are found guilty or the mafia kills off everyone else.

As soon as we get 20 people I will put your names in a generator and randomly assign you your roles and PM them to you. I'll put the town to sleep and then awake them when I get all the key role responses.

Goodluck Linds, enjoy coming up with ways of killing people.

Edit: I would also suggest that this be stickied, it makes it easier on all involved.

This is going to be weird.
Title: Re: Mafia!
Post by: Lines on 25 Oct 2007, 14:45
Yeah, it's a completely different atmosphere and not quite as fun. And you can't see any shifty eyes or blushing.

It was a quiet night in Nowheresville, so when the sun rose, everyone woke up refreshed and chipper. Mrs. E in particular was quite cheerful. After her morning tea and bisuit, she ventured outside to work on her gardening. While crossing her back yard towards the shed, she noticed something peculiar leaking out under the door. When she got closer, she noticed the liquid was red and sticky. To make sure it wasn't a prank that the neighbor's spoild brat children weren't playing on her, she slowly opened the door. When she fully absorbed the horror that was in front of her. One of her neighbors ran over to see what was causing the commotion when he saw Mrs. E frozen in shock in front of a man that was hanging from the ceiling of her shed, held up only by the large hook that was shoved up under his jaw. Before she fainted, Mrs. E uttered, "No... not Ballard."

Town, it's up to you decide. Who is responsible for this crime? Accuse away!

Alright, I think this game is unbalanced in the favour of the mafia.
As such, I move that we vote the KTKat to the lynching station post-haste, since see seems keen to blame poor old Phil.

P.S. Can we play this for real in Toronto? Pretty please?

No, I accuse TYLER. You bought Ballard food, did you not? Pizza if I remember correctly while we were in New York, but that wasn't enough for him, he wanted one of the pieces of pepperoni off of yours, and it made you snap didn't it? DIDN'T it?!

Title: Re: Mafia!

Slick: But...then I have to take classes during the summer that I don't need. (My uni is silly and on quarters and we don't get out until the beginning of June.) If the day of graduation is before Toronto and I have money left over from when I'm going to NY and supplies, I will try. Or you could post pictures. Gowrsh.

KT-1
Tyler-1
Rally-4
Boro-1

Only 1 more vote to put RallyMonkey on trial. And yes, I assigned the village idiot. (That role has quite a bit of freedom, so the player plays as they choose. I'll say who was who at the end.)
Title: Re: Mafia!

Title: Re: Mafia!

Technically everyone votes, so we can't figure out too easily who anyone is. At least that's the way I've always played.
Title: Re: Mafia!

The village idiot, if you guys want to use that character, tries to confuse everyone on purpose.

I came to this town meeting today to cast my vote, and I must say, I am appalled.

There is no possible way that I could have been the one who killed Ballard. He was a friend to me. Back when I was just a small child, he taught me how to tie my shoes. I wear shoes every day God damnit! And every day, I look down at my shoes, and I think of him. Now, when I look down at my shoes, all I will be able to think about is the terror reign of this mafia.

My shoes may now be covered in blood, but my hands are clean.

MAFIA MURDER STRIKES TOWN
Supersheep, reporting from Capital City

A FRENZY HAS STRUCK NOWHERESVILLE, writes our Crime Correspondent, which has
been shocked by the callous mafia murder of Ballard, a young gentleman with no known
connections to organised crime. Mr Ballard had been hung by his jaw, a trademark pun-
ishment of the Plexington mob.
Suspicion immediately fell on RallyMonkey, another resident of the town. This intrepid
reporter spoke to a local in a spiffy suit who knew Mr. RallyMonkey, and was informed of
suspicious behaviour, although this character seemed pretty shady himself. RallyMonkey
may also have condemned himself out of his own mouth when he admitted in court to-
day that he was found with blood on his shoes.

^Nice one.

BALLARD! You are dead! There are no zombies in this game! Besides, zombies don't have coherent speech anyways, they only go, "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmgraaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhbrainssssssss." So hush, you. Jhocking, the same goes for you. We already tarred and feathered your ass, don't make me do it again.

For the record guys, we're only doing guilty/not guilty. We'll point fingers again next round. So you can be suspicious all you want, just make sure you say whether or not RallyMonkey is guilty or not guilty.

Definite responses: (Will update.)
Guilty - 5
Not Guilty - 1

Town! Go to sleep! Key roles, PM me your choices.
Title: Re: Mafia!
Post by: Slick on 26 Oct 2007, 08:50
I don't know if that's quite fair...
I mean, how many non-mafia do the mafia then need convince to get a kill? I'm much more a fan of the 50% requirement to get something done, though I suppose five is fine to go to trial.
Also how many mafia are there anyways?
Title: Re: Mafia!
Post by: thegreatbuddha on 26 Oct 2007, 08:54
One less than we started with :D
Title: Re: Mafia!
Post by: Lines on 26 Oct 2007, 09:13
I'm doing 5 for each because I would actually like to finish the game. I honestly prefer 50% too, but like mberan said, this would last until Christmas if I did that. Also, since the way I've always played it you never knew how many mafia there are, I'm not going to say, but there are still more townspeople than key roles combined.

So for reference for the next round:
The first person to be accused 5 times will be sentenced.
The first decision (g/ng) with five votes is put into effect.
Every round, someone will be accused, even if no one is killed, and will followed by a trial.

Because of the previous day's mayhem, the townspeople of Nowheresville had a much rougher night than the night before. People were on edge, children were afraid, even the dogs and cats of the town hid under their owner's beds. So when a fire started on Main St., everyone was awake to notice it happened. The town bakery was on fire! But that wasn't all. Before the firemen could arrive, the townspeople were able to see the owner was tied to the counter inside of the store. That night, LordNagash died in his own bakery. The police are convinced the mafia is responsible for this horrible crime.

So, town, who's responsible for this? Accuse away!

If you think convicting me and hanging me from the neck until dead will solve anything, please do, but I tell you now, I am not the only one who has been accusing people, and there are much more likely people to be mafia than me. Look not to the loud or the defiant, look to the quiet and sneaky, for those are the ones hiding things.

*poke poke* Oh, you're not dead, good. Ahem.

After quite an ordeal over the weekend, the town finally got itself back to normal. Since they couldn't seem to decide on who was responsible for the last death, they brushed it off as a fluke. Maybe some homicidal maniac passed through their town and at seeing their resolve to find the culprit, he or she decided to flee the scene. But it was not so. Earlier this evening, a couple returning home from dinner at the local diner happened to witness the latest crime. They were walking along the sidewalk on Main St. when they saw a person run up behind Boro and smash a gardening hoe at the ase of his skull, severing his spine. Before the couple could react, the murderer ran off. They were unable to see his/her face and police found no evidence leading it to a specific person.

Town, it is up to you to find the people responsible for this crime, even if it is only one at a time. It's time for the finger pointing to resume.

Title: Re: Mafia!
Post by: Slick on 30 Oct 2007, 09:22
So, it looks like I'd be safe voting not guilty, but I maintain the abstain, half because more people should be voting, and half because it is gratifying to see my accuser squirm. Sorry, I'm not going to kill you, but I might just watch you dangle over death a while.

Because I'm talking from beyond the grave and am a spiteful sore loser
Look, don't do this. It's not fun. Don't think you're getting back at anybody, don't think you're saving the world from whoever you think the mafia are. In this game people die. Then they stop playing. That is the way the game works, and once you are dead, you do not talk. This spoils the game for those who are playing. The nature of the game is, sometimes you live, sometimes you die. If you died this time, maybe you will live next time. Tough. Talking from the grave just spoils the game for the rest of the players, so if you are dead shut up and stop being a sore loser.

To respond to your accusations, yes, I would have every reason to kill you were I mafia, which is why I probably would not kill you, because it is obvious, so I can clearly not choose the cup in front of me! Of course, we should all know this as simple fact, so I clearly can not choose the cup in front of you!

Look, you'll be free to say 'told you so' or 'wow didn't see that one coming' after the fact. As for now, you are dead, and this is how the game is played. We can play again and you can try a different strategy for not getting killed. I have played games where I was the first to die, and when that happened, I went and played pool while they finished the game, or I stood around to watch and curse at the mafia in the night. You don't talk though, that's petty and spiteful.

Putting the game on pause for a second so I can say something I really shouldn't have to say:

I'm not mad, I'm tired and just don't have any patience right now, but it's because of my personal life. I didn't want dead people complaining or outsiders messing around because it ruins the atmosphere of the game if you're accusing people when you're dead. It's not going to piss me off so much as others trying to get into it. It's been just as much fun for me narrating as it would for me to play, but if people start complaining after this, I will stop being nice about it and end the game and that's that. I would say more, but frankly, this is not a freaking blog and it's none of you business anyways.

Back to the game, please, before I feel like the Mafia Nazi Boss thing.

Third post is the charm?

The next victim didn't need an overnight bag where he was going. While the next victim was sleeping, the mafia members broke into his house and kidnapped him, drugging him so he wouldn't put up a fight. When he woke up, he'd found his feet very heavy. He also felt he was moving. He looked at his feet and realized he had concrete blocks molded around his feet. Realizing he was being carried to the harbor, he tried to struggle, but there were too many to fight and he was still groggy from the drugs. So while his fellow townspeople were sleeping somewhat peacefully in their beds, Blue_Kitty was sleeping with the fishes. He was discovered a few days later by one of the local fishermen.

Town, have at it.

Finally, someone who gets it. Still, since Slick has enough time to contemplate on all that, it's obvious he's guilty. An innocent man would be fretting over whether or not the crime could be pinned on him. Slick knows he's guilty, and spends his time on more important matters.

At this point in the game, we need progress.  We can't just let the mafia members pick up off one by one.  So, while I'm not completely convinced of Buddha's guilt, we need to stop this scourge.  Guilty

It was a bright and sunny day in Nowheresville, be it a little on the chilly side. Two friends were walking to the local coffee shop when they were suddenly stopped in their tracks about 10 yards away from the entrance. Out of nowhere, a car had zoomed down the street into the front window of the coffee shop, where luckily, no one was sitting at the time. The few workers and customers inside of the store at the time only suffered a few broken bones and scratches, but it wasn't so lucky for the driver. IronOxide died on impact, due to a faulty airbag and lack of seatbelt. Police discovered later that the break lines had been cut and now suspect foul play.

Get to it, town.

Tyler only voted guilty on the last one after we already had enough people sure for the execution.  Seems to me as though that's exactly the sort of move a mafia member would make to try and avoid suspicion.

Let's be reasonable here, amper.  Both of us voted Buddha as guilty.  Both of us did so at a time when our votes mattered as to determining his guilt.  In calling me guilty now, wouldn't that mean that you'd be wrong about Buddha's guilt?  To kill both of us seems fairly contradictory, especially one after the other, just like that.  Tyler's vote came later, at a time when Buddha was already condemned.  Seems like an effort to save face, ward off an impression of guilt, to me.

Title: Re: Mafia!
Post by: Joseph on 02 Nov 2007, 12:12
I assure you of my innocence.  My interest here is as much in the prevention of deaths as your own.  Our population is slowly dwindling, and we need to take action.  I've been saddened by the deaths, as I'm sure all of you have, and now, at this point, we must use logic to try and deduce who is behind these things.  All I want right now, is to see the town safe.

If I need to try and defend myself with logic, I give you this.  Mafia members would no doubt try and vote along the same lines, in order to ensure that a townsperson is killed, no?  In the previous round of voting, I was alone in accusing Tyler.  Were I mafia, wouldn't others have supported me?  I suppose it's possible that the accusations so far have been accurate, and I'm the only mafia member left, but I assure you, this is not the case.

But, as I said, action needs to be taken.  And, if you must kill me in innoncence, I suppose I can at least take solace that you are not sitting around idle.

Sorry about the delay, but I was preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

This morning was a very dreary morning for the people of Nowheresville. There was a protest outside of City Hall about all the murders that have been going on and how almost everyone being accused was being let go. The people wanted some action, some justice. But amidst the yelling at the town mayor and judge, someone blast an air horn, silencing everyone. On the top of the roof of a building across the street from town hall, a few figures were seen holding up a tied up body - it was the mafia and their next victim. They gloated over the town's idiocy and decided to celebrate their so far immunity, by killing in braod daylight. The building was tall enough and the victim had the unlikelyhood of landing on a stop sign, that the victim's body was cut in half. This afternoon will be a funeral for the town's favorite Tyler.

Town, for the love of good things, get your vengeance!

Because I hope that I've done my best to be honest and trustworthy.  Because I legitimately regret my accusations of Tyler.  Because I would not be so silly as to narrowly escape death one round during which I accused Tyler, and then take part in killing him the very next.  Because if I were mafia, I would likely have had other mafia members supporting my vote for Tyler the round before (though I suppose a case could be made that I could be the last mafia member left).  Because I want to see the mafia scourge driven from us.  Because I care.

other mafia members

People.  Have you never seen The Sopranos?
The mafia isn't like some kid's club.  It's not like they would go around, a giant mob of yes-men, all agreeing with each other. Not only would that be extremely suspicious, but this game would be over far more quickly if this were the case, no?
We don't have any hard evidence.  That's the nature of this game.  But statistically speaking, if we don't off this guy, the mob will whack another.  And once this other person is whacked, the mob will have a significantly higher chance of being able to dominate the town.
I care about the town's welfare as well.  This is why I want Dark Flame off the streets and in the gas chamber.
Title: Re: Mafia!

*sigh* Either the mafia or we idiot townspeople killed the detective, didn't we? And probably the doctor, too. I sense impending doom.
Title: Re: Mafia!
Post by: Joseph on 07 Nov 2007, 19:06
I'm confused by your argument of statistics.  If you do kill me, I personally guarantee that the mafia will kill someone anyhow.  Killing me isn't going to stop that.  If you don't kill me, then that is one more innocent townsperson around, to try and weed out the mafia members.  Statistically speaking, you're better off if I'm live.

Kat, thank you for your support.  It means much to me.  I am only saddened that another round must end without a mafia member weeded out.

I kind of have a feeling the detective might still be around.  If I were the detective (I'm not), I wouldn't reveal myself, or else I'd obviously be the mafia's next victim.

Title: Re: Mafia!
Post by: ampersandwitch on 07 Nov 2007, 19:11
I don't think it would be prudent for the doctor or detective to reveal their identity, even if they were still alive.  They would clearly be the next lined up for a hit.  We don't even have a way of telling if we got any mafia at all yet!
The only real thing we have to go on is not faith, but also steadfastness.
I think that's what I was trying to convey before, but it seemed like bloodthirst, and I suppose that may have cast a suspicious light over my own person.
I'm not advocating belligerence, but firmness in our beliefs as a town.

ETA
Also, Dark Flame, though your rhetoric is touching, most of your logic relies on the assumption that you are innocent.  Obviously, if we were all privy to your assumption, you wouldn't be hours from a (in my opinion, just) death.

Town, get drunk and pass out in whatever place you deem suitable and roles PM me, because this isn't over yet.

This evening, tragedy struck again. Around 5:50 pm, while writing a check for her groceries, the next victim was killed. A car sped past the front of the local supermarket and with precise and deadly aim, Misconception was shot in the head. As the glass of the large front window shattered, a loud voice was heard yelling, "You morons think you've got it! BWAHAHA!"

Obviously, the town is dead wrong. And the narrator knows that was a silly pun.

I have to go on believing that maybe, all of us working together got at least one of the mob.  We just have to keep on truckin', but I'm definitely going to think about who seems the most worthy of my accusation.
Title: Re: Mafia!
Post by: Jimmy the Squid on 11 Nov 2007, 01:50
It all comes down to the fact that there are now very few people left in this game. There has to be at least one mafia member here because people keep dying. I guess I'll have to start this off. Mberan42 seems like he's keeping his head down for a lot of this. I haven't seen him get that into the game. It makes me suspicious. I think he did it.

HEY. IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE NARRATOR. For those of you who are dead and/or not playing:

It's time for the next round! Yay!

Last night, the town was ablaze. Well, not the whole town, but one of the houses on Elm St. was and this caused people to get heated. Around midnight, someone noticed a weird light coming from their neighbor's house. When they looked out their front door to see what was going on, they noticed a huge fire in the inside of the house which was rapidly spreading through the interior. The neighbor called the fire department and luckily no one was hurt. The neighbor disclosed that she new her neighbor had left that morning for vacation and had fortunately taken their dog with them. The only casualties in the fire were a baby grand piano and a tank of exotic fish. The police suspect arson.

So town, this time someone was lucky, but someone's got to pay for the mess they've caused. Who's it gonna be? (Note: This round only 3 votes are needed for trial and execution/save.)

This evening, tragedy struck the town yet again. During a mock joust taking place at the Renaissance Fair, one of the "knights" veered off course and impaled KTkat. The "knight" quickly dropped the lance and galloped off through the fair, leaving the spectators in shock. The horse and armor were found about a mile away from the scene near a river, but no DNA was found on either, leaving the police unable to name a suspect.

Gemmwah, you have been found guilty. Your sentence is death by guillotine, but you can have a drink or 10 or something if you are a bit shaky about it.

And I would tell the town to sleep, but after all the deaths, the only four people left found it a little hard to get some shut eye....

Jimmy, Eris, ampersandwitch, and Slick were all gathered in a poorly lit parking lot.
"I still don't know why you had to kill Tyler, Slick. He was one of us," Jimmy said. The two girls looked at Slick, their uneasiness apparent.
"Well, why not? We killed everyone else in this town, why not Tyler?" Slick replied, turning to his car.
"Yeah, but why not get rid of the others quicker?" one of the girls said to his back. Slick opened the trunk of his car and bent to lift something out. When he shut it, the others could tell he had something, but it was too dark to see what.
"And you know what they say... There can only be one."

Post by: Jimmy the Squid on 26 Nov 2007, 04:46
Hey guys I'm starting up a second round of this with me as your friendly narrator! So let me know if you want in and we can start up another round. I guess we'll play the same rules as before (as seen below) and if we get enough people to play I might start a new thread to make it easier to see where we are up to. The only change to the rules is that people who are dead/not playing are allowed to post but if you can make your post all italicised that would be great, you know, just for simplicity's sake. Also it would be cool if you could not try to give anything away or sway people's opinions because we actually want this to be fun, right? Right? Ok so let me know how you feel about this.

It's a sick sick game, full of psychopaths and terrified innocents. Which means it's most excellent.

Ok so we only need six more people to get this under way. I like that people are coming in for the second round and I have no problem with people playing again but if anyone who hasn't played before wants in you should totally get in quick. I didn't realise it would be so popular.

Looks like round two is full, and I have noone but myself to blame for not being part of it since I wasn't following along with this thread.  I would just like to toss out a suggestion for when Mafia round 3 is beginning though: if you want to get people who didn't play the previous round involved then perhaps it would be a good idea to start the new thread prior to sign-ups, rather than after sign-ups are complete.  You know, 'cause people who aren't playing the previous game might also not be reading the thread for the previous game, and stuff.

I've never played a game but read numerous Mafia threads on various forums, would be interested to give it a go if there's a game on.

As was suggested on the last page/in uh, 2007, it might be an idea to scrap this one and start a new thread before taking sign-ups, or shit is gonna get confusing.

Why not do the sign-ups here and create a new thread for the new game once we're organized ?
Anyway I'm in.

Um, just to pop in an fyi: There have been a number of "mafia" games we've done on here since this one died, just under different names/guises. I came in on a werewolves one we did a little while back, and we just finished up a sharks/jets musical awesomeness-themed game a few months ago. I'm sure people would love it if someone stepped forward to moderate a new one, but you'll probably want to start a new thread.
