Very impressive, I gotta say. I'm loving the tracks on myspace. They're rather beautiful, have a very good intensity and, to my great surprise, are not overly derivative of the bands that obviously influence your work. I love to hear piano in "post-rock" songs like these so the addition of that is very nice as well. This doesn't quite hold true for the other two songs on the site but the first one that starts playing is quite nice and the non-office one is certainly quite good as well (though less impressive).

i thought it would be kinda cool if i created an account on this forum i have clearly not spent any time lurking on and made my first post ever to start a topic for the purpose of pimping my band to a bunch of fags

There have been topics like this before.  Do we need more?

In his defense, it's been a while since the last one and he'd get yelled as just as much for necroposting.

No music up yet, but feel free to add us. We will hopefully be recording soon. We play fuzzed up garage rock with heavy blues, psych, and punk influences.

Also, in case Tommy or Johnny read this thread, we're warm and punchy.

Fantastic stuff, theboxflower.

While I don't have a band of my own, a friend of mine from my old job has an electronica project that I actually really dig. His myspace is here (http://www.myspace.com/thelongmouthcastle), and his first album is a free download right from that site. I like it a lot, and I don't even really listen to electronic music.

I'm in a black metal band called Isgahaatt (http://www.myspace.com/isgahaatt). I feel we're pretty good. We have a gig on at the Lewisham Hotel on the 22nd of November for anyone who is interested and in the area.

The guitarist in the black metal band also has a little atmospheric electronica side project going on that just got picked up by some underground label from America. Good for him. You can listen to his stuff here (http://www.myspace.com/theseerreeseht).

My one man acoustic black metal thingy's kinda gone electric, so I'm not sure it's actually ABM anymore.

Plus I don't have any songs recorded yet, or a proper name. I'm thinking "Jamaican Necrobobsled Team".

guys, me and some friends are going to be recording an EP called "The Truth About Bears" very soon. Each song will cover a different aspect of the life of a grizzly bear and last song (The Truth About Bears) will be an overall retrospective of the previous tracks. we don't have all our instruments lined up yet or know what we're gonna call ourselves but that doesn't really matter.

Uhm...I'm collaborating with my friend Mike, and we call ourselves: Fetcher (http://www.myspace.com/fetcherband).  We have one song recorded, which you have to turn your volume up really high to hear it.  I'm not sure why.  Our second song should be up within a month or two.  I'm saying a month or two because Mike lives two hours away, and I only get up there once a month or so.

I'm also in a band called The Nettles.  We're a three piece rock band.  We have no songs up, one song written, and haven't practiced in at least a month.  Go us.

I have a coiuple of projects. The best one is Halo of Flies. Here is the myspace: http://www.myspace.com/haloofflies (http://www.myspace.com/haloofflies) and here is the last.fm page: http://www.last.fm/music/Halo+Of+Flies (http://www.last.fm/music/Halo+Of+Flies) where you can listen to all my released music that doesn't suck. I share the name with some crappy punk band, but it's pretty easy to differentiate between the two. I'm the one offering free, full streaming of all my tracks and copious downloads, they're the ones who were trying to sell their music on my myspace page. In case you're still confused, my releases are:

Solar Symphony
The Blasted Heath
Huxley Orwell Overdrive
World War Zero

There's also Death Throes, which is a significantly more insane noise/industrial/metal/whatever project. I've only released one EP under that moniker (Signal Decay), but I have been working on an album (Death Throes Seriously Harms You and Others Around You) for about two years now. The myspace is here: http://www.myspace.com/deaththroes (http://www.myspace.com/deaththroes)  and the last.fm, where you can stream the EP in a similiar fashion is here: http://www.last.fm/music/Death+Throes (http://www.last.fm/music/Death+Throes). If you listen to music loudly I suggest you adjust your equipment, as some Death Throes material has been deliberately mastered in order to damage speakers because I was feeling like a dick at the time and have never bothered to change it.

I also have a neo-folk project, Ill Met By Moonlight, myspace here: http://www.myspace.com/illmetbymoonlightmusic (http://www.myspace.com/illmetbymoonlightmusic). I have only recorded one song for this project with what I consider to be satisfactory quality, though I have over an album of songs written, both originals and interpretations of traditional ballads and whatnot.

I play 2nd guitar in a band called 'A Bomb for the Pentagon'. It's instrumental, 'post-rock'-ish stuff but much louder and with no xylophone interludes. I don't know what to compare it to or what it sounds like. It's loud. There's a lot of delay.

I just finished recording an album with a reggae/hip-hop band called Rumpunch (http://www.myspace.com/rumpunchtheband). Then I left the band.

As of last week, I'm playing/DJ-ing 8-bit and chiptune music using decks and gameboys under the name Przewalski's Horse. I've had one gig so far at a warehouse party thing. Nothing recorded yet.

I'm also recording with some other guys called Decorated General.

I'll have a listen to everyone's stuff when I get home from work.

All jokes aside, I liked the one song you did. Repetitive, but the brevity doesn't really make that a problem.

My "band" http://www.myspace.com/amphibiotic (http://www.myspace.com/amphibiotic)
I used to do ambient noisy stuff, but now its just whatever mood I'm in at the time.
Ventriloquism is my most recent track, and I'm kind of happy with how it turned out.
But then i got all post rock cliche and put radio recordings underneath.

It just felt like the right thing to do.

Okay so this started as a complete and total joke band, but as both of us have learned more and more about music and have discovered some programs that will help in musical creation, each recording we do is a little bit more actual-music-like than the last.
DEATH TAKES ITS TOLL ON THE MASSES:
http://www.myspace.com/deathtakesitstollonthemasses

Second "band" is really just myself playing around in Garageband.  Two tracks are made from Garageband loops, one is a satirical mostly-vocal recording, and one is me playing with effects.
LCSE:
http://www.myspace.com/lcse

Ambient type tracks I've made.  Don't know what else to say.  Listen and enjoy.
http://www.myspace.com/diaemus

ENJOY EVERYONE!

Oh and by the way, theboxflower, I'm loving "followed by ghosts".  Similar to other Post Rock, I can definetly sense some GSY!BE influence, but that is in NO WAY a bad thing.  The only thing I dislike about "A Silver Mt. Zion" (basically GSY!BE number 2) is that it doesn't sound enough like the Godspeed.
Also, The Office theme is hilarious, and wins some bonus points.

Quick question for people to ponder- With regard to personal bands, I was wondering whether you thought posting show dates on this site is legitmate music discussion or just spammy?  I've seen several people do it, and I'm probably the biggest offender.  My band has a lot of shows coming up in a short stretch and I've sort of decided to hold off on any sort of posting to avoid mucking up the boards.  Thoughts, comments, further questions?

Yeah, I understand your point.  To be honest, I have only had two people from Phoenix respond to show posting, and have only met one person who came out as a result (thanks Celtic Geek!).  If there are more Phoenicians on here, I haven't seen them.  That said, putting a post up for two people when I already have a myspace seems a bit excessive and may lead to cluttering up the board.  Maybe, if there are more people interested, we could have a sticky'd thread for show postings, if the mods are so inclined?  Just a thought...

I've been working on starting up a funny little band with the name of ManCrush, its like ska, and it would suck. We don't have guitarists or bassists, or drummers, but you know, thats why it sucks. It would be ridiculously bad if we could get our act together. Think of the worst sci-fi movie you've ever seen, now make it a musical.

If anyone does gigs in Sydney, I'm always keen to know about them. Including recommendations of other bands. Spamming or not, there isn't a very good forum for live music in Australia. Or at least, I haven't found one... most of them seem pretty narrow genre-wise. I'm pretty into the idea of one thread with recommendations for upcoming gigs.

A solution for you;
Go to the city.
Walk find any random bar with any band playing.
Sit down and watch.

It's the easiest and most fun method I've found.
Sometimes you find shitty bands, other times you strike it lucky and find someone you like, then you can track gigs they play through myspace, and bands they like.
And you begin to build up a whole list of bands playing you can go see.
And with each gig comes more bands to enjoy.

Wow, lots of good stuff to check out from this thread. I love finding music I might otherwise never hear about in the vast sea of shite that is the interweb.

I am in a band called Aethyrus.
www.aethyrus.com
We play alternative-folk-mope-rock. I guess. I dunno, but it's fun. :D
Our singer, Aerynn, has one of the best voices I've ever heard. We just got a new drummer, so we are in the process of beginning recording again, for the THIRD faxxin time. Le sigh.

I also do a solo music project called Thought Warrior. I just started recording, so hopefully within the next few weeks I'll have a few tracks up. Angry, socially conscious, vegan, anti-human, anti-religion, social-darwinist music.

I just got asked to join a TOOL cover band. So sweet, so very sweet. And I'm recording the majority of bass tracks for two friends solo projects. Between work, music and chasing beautiful women, I have no idea how I have time to sleep. Oh look, I have 3 hours until work. Hooray for me!

"Socially conscious" and "social Darwinist" seem like they would contradict.  Unless you've got satiric intent there, in which case carry on.

I confuse myself with my bands.
My I play bass in a band called "Random Article" (even if you hate our music, you have to give us credit for the wiki reference) which is a kind of prog-rock thing. I don't really know what it is, but prog rock seems to fit best (alternating 9/8 to 6/8 to 9/8 to 2/4).
My other band is an acoustic band with three people. A rhythm guitar/banjo player, a saxophone player, and me on upright bass/lead guitar/bassoon. Yes, bassoon.
Lastly is a kind of a personal side project, which is just me and my (ridiculously good) drummer friend. I have some cool ideas for it (making it into a "musical collective" called "The Allusionists" with a double album with one disk being "A Ton of Bricks" and one being "A Ton of Feathers) but I'm lazy and have shitty work ethic, so for now it's just where I put my "Progternafazz" songs. That's Progressive-Alternative-Funk/Folk-Jazz.
Also, whoever was in The Broken Vinyls, I have to say, I'm impressed.

My band, Ergo B Bag is playing at the Annandale Hotel on Parramatta Road this friday night for those in Sydney, we are headlining a bill with Crooked Fiddle Band and Richard In Your Mind. Its gonna be a whole lot of party, and will no doubt be alot better than the Big Day Out gig during which it started raining and my keyboard was consequently drenched. Electricity and water, always a winning combination.

I've played lots of music in lots of bands that are either now dead or still going strong.  I'll start with the one that isn't gone.

www.myspace.com/energiaband (http://www.myspace.com/energiaband) I play bass and sing in this one.  I'm the one with the vocal presence unlike my buddy I play with, heh.
www.myspace.com/takeaction (http://www.myspace.com/takeaction) Again, bass and singing.  This is my baby, started as a Subhumans cover band when I was 15 and we eventually made some music that I was quite proud of.
www.myspace.com/wearemice (http://www.myspace.com/wearemice) Post punk spaz band, I play drums in this one.

There's an amazing amount of talent in this thread.  Lots of really great stuff.  These forums almost seem like an unreal place, to see so many people like this coming together with so much in common.

Well here ya go, hope you enjoy some of it.

i've played in dozens of bands, my current band is "the radio flyer cowboys" me on bass, lucky/josh on guitar/vox, tatsu mataki on guitar, and justin on drums, we're like explosions in the sky with better distortion and slap bass

i've played in alot of metal bands, which depresses me since i'm a classicaly trained bass player and all i end up doing is playing root notes

my favorite band i played in was "a don juan" unfortunetly our old drummer who kind of made the band died  :(

also jam down at "the clam" playing jazz with some of the older guys

I can't remember if I posted in here or not. I think I did, but I was being a dick, so it got buh-leeted. Oh well.

This is my little two-man project with my good friend Rueben: The Starfighters (http://www.myspace.com/starfightersmusic). So far we've only got a few songs, most of which are basically just recycled shit I wrote alone 2 or 3 years ago. Rueben's writing vocal melodies and lyrics though, and I'm going to go over to my friend's place to record some drums, so eventually it'll flesh out.

And here is my "I will collaborate with anybody who is game/talented" thing, the Japanese Tapdancing Brigade (http://www.myspace.com/japanesetapdancingbrigade). Yeah, I uh, I really wasn't kidding about that 'recycled' stuff with the Starfighters. I've polished shit up a lot more since then, though.

We used to have me on drums and vocals, but I've decided to move to guitar and vocals as the music gets more experimental and freaky and such - we've had such a bad time finding a drummer, especially one with our tastes.

Post by: imapiratearg on 31 Jan 2008, 20:08
Actually, the scene here is pretty good.  But, you don't really want to come to Vermont for much else than the scenery, and country bar bands.

Well, actually if you want "indie" stuff, there are some really great venues here.  A cafe in the capital that frequently hosts local flavours as well as out of state bands that are mostly underground, but there haven't been any notable musicians to come out of the ol' Green Mountain State since Phish.  Although, I would keep an eye on The Year's Best. (http://www.myspace.com/theyearsbest)  They are pretty damn good.

There's this other band from here getting some notoriety called Waiting for a Miracle, but they're one of those new "emocore" bands or whatever.

Post by: Patrick on 31 Jan 2008, 20:33
Don't even get me started on how shitty the scene is here. You have a choice between Balkan pop (fucking shoot me now), all the Metallica that I've ever hated, or shitty top-40.

Back home in my hometown in the Bay Area it's all adolescent boys crying over losing the girlfriend whose name they can't even remember because they've had so many since. Either that or you've got a choice of metalcore or screamo.

Hey, thanks.  I don't really like the vocals on that song, either.  I really wanted to try playing it with a capo, so it's higher, but my capo is in my gig bag.  Which is at Vermont Music Repair.

That's really similar to what Mike and I use when recording stuff for Fetcher, that other music project I linked up a couple of times already.  Except the one we use is a Boss-1200 CD or something very similar.

Also, PECOAE, your stuff is rad.  Your voice reminds me of Dan Bejar.  Especially on "Summer Hammock Morning."

Johnny, that song is awesome.  I wish there were bands like you guys around here.  It would definitely be a breath of fresh air from all the suck.

I guess since this thread got resurrected, I might as well mention that I have new, better recording up on my own Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/thesuitorsmusic), if anyone would care to give me a listen.

But we have no shows booked for the near future and all my instruments are gone now.

This is bad.

Have you heard Entombed, Dark Tranquillity, Soilwork, and Grave? Yep, so have we. A lot.

And no, we don't take ourselves seriously, whatsoever.

For those who click the link, let me extend my sincerest apology right now.

Thanks! It was one of the ones I added. It must be awesome to play with other people who are actually capable of handling unusual time signatures like 7/4. Is it? I imagine it is, but I have never experienced it myself.

Also Johnny I know you like it better that way! I just like "The Starfighters" better because I don't want people to think I'm going it alone!

...

Fuck I should've just called it STARFIGHTER after all.

*bump*

I wrote a new song for my ambient band.  I think it sounds really lovely where I don't muck up the guitar bits.  It was like, one in the morning, and I was pretty much composing and recording it on the spot.  It's really cool, though.  I used my guitar like a set of bongos, after tying a bandana on the strings to dampen them.

It's "Together for One Night."

It's a tiny bit awesome, yeah. The drummer in my band is insanely good. I wrote a song that was in four-bar phrases that as far as timing went three of five and then one of seven, and he just absorbed it and did it without any trouble. It was frightening because he didn't even know what I was talking about when I explained it - he just played it.

9:00 Black & Blue Revue (http://www.myspace.com/blackandbluerevue)- They call themselves "punkgrass," and it's appropriate.  Good music, good people.
10:30 Pscycho Square Dance (http://www.myspace.com/psychosquaredance)- Self described as a mishmash of whitetrash homegrown.
11:45 Thankful Birds (http://www.myspace.com/thankfulbirds) - If you haven't checked us out yet, please do.  Jazzy, rocky, bluesy, indie stuff.

Heh, personal bands? Sounds fun.

I used to be a member of a punk band called "Kitty Ninja versus The Space Pirates" which was a comedy style band, focusing on the adventures of our mascot kitty.

I also played vocalist for a garage death metal band called "Sekhmet" but we only formed it to get revenge on some kids who wouldn't stop playing lamb of god (Specifically 4 hours at a time playing "Laid to Rest" constantly...) at my old youth club.

Currently I invested in some music creation software on my PC, I got it back in late January and I've been doodling about since. If anyone wishes I could email you a few of my tracks. I focus mainly on horror ambience, just something in the background to kind of, mildly freak you out, its aimed to be on while your playing horror games or such.

The link to one of my songs is in my signature, feedbacks always nice I like to think I can take criticism well.

Edit: Also if you like my work and wouldn't mind your own personal piece, get in touch I don't mind creating music for peoples own tastes.

If any of you kids are up for potential airplay, I run a weekly show on CUR1350 (Cambridge & Anglia Ruskin University radio + recently named # 1 student radio station in the UK ... which probably means little when compared to a lot of US college stations but oh well) called CUR1350 Breakthrough that is aimed at showcasing upcoming bands that are either unsigned or signed to small labels.

Drop me a line at chiara [at] cur1350 [dot] co [dot] uk with a myspace link or link to music files and "QC forum" somewhere in the subject line and I'll let you know if you make the cut.

Genre-wise I'm free to play pretty much whatever. Only restriction is no swearing if at all possible (it's 9-11 PM so some things I can get away with, but essentially I'd rather be safe than sorry because ofcom trouble is very much undesired). As an added incentive I also have magical playlist powers as head of music, so if I REALLY like you you might even get playlisted - this does, however, include a criteria of audience-friendliness.

We're the Spring Street Slangaz. It started as a drunken joke sometime after Christmas, but people like it so we keep making more. When you listen to it take it with a grain of salt. We don't take it seriously and you shouldn't either. We only do it for fun and I hope ya’ll get a good laugh from it.

My solo acoustic stuff. I think there's like, one original song on there, a bunch of covers, plus a Christmas one I've not taken down yet?

Since I already have a thread up making everyone aware of my band, I'll post a video.

http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=31689345

We're Bad Actor, from Orlando Florida. =)

Is the source audio of that video that bad?  I've managed to figure out how to get a $500 digicam to produce pretty high-quality YouTube vids, if you would like some help PM me.

Check the link in my sig for some examples, doubt you'll dig the band but you can at least see that even amateurs can make quality videos :D

I'd love to say whether I dug it or not, but the audio is just horrid, I can't tell what I'm listening to!

Secret Number 1:  VirtualDub (or VirtualDub-MPEG) - the best freeware video conversion / splitting software I've found.

What you want to do is compress your video but leave the audio RAW / WAV.  Most cameras are going to record in raw MPEG-2, so use VirtualDub-MPEG as VDub itself doesn't like MPEG-2 streams.

Once you load the video into VirtualDub-MPEG, you go to the Video menu, select compression, and select XVid as your video codec.  Don't touch the audio.  Set your start and stop points in the video, and then "Save as AVI..." from the file menu (you might want to first locate or move the "Output" folder so you know where to find the split clips.)

If the file is still too big, then delete the new .avi and go back to the compression options, there is a slider (under "advanced..." I think) for Quality / File Size.  Slide it towards the smaller file size end a bit, try it again, keep adjusting that slider till you have the file size you want.  It will look worse the farther to the right you go.

This allows you to compress the video while leaving the audio alone.

This all assumes your video camera captured the audio well to begin with, if the source video sounds like crap, there is nothing any program will do to improve it (that I know of.)

(Going to post this as its own thread as well.)

Why are you guys not math rock? I am upset by this. (But seriously, I'm digging your stuff.)

Matt sine cosine and tangent are trig stuff. For finding angles in triangles and such. Is that what you want to know?

My friend Israel started a project called Seatree (http://myspace.com/ezrasocean). The name is a play on both the middle names of his two sons. Izzy and I are thinking of doing a split LP with a few collaborative tracks, and I was just wondering if anybody would check his stuff out. Right now it's two songs, one that is semi-acoustic and is about his newborn second son, and another that is a heavier instrumental jam with an asston of guitar layering. It's his first time actually putting any of his work on the inter-nets and I am definitely pleased to hear what he's been up to for the last year.

I've been in a couple of bands though none of them have every really come to anything but one or two gigs. Though me and the drummer from my old band are planning on getting together at some point during the summer and recording an EP.
Anyway, here's one www.myspace.com/preposterone . The 3rd song on there I actually wrote and recorded last night. The other two were just spontaneous jams. We do have actual songs, just not recorded.
The other is www.myspace.com/themetalbandtheband , we were sort of, a completely not serious metal covers band. I think there's a video or two on there as well. :)

I was looking for a thread about this! Yay for the search function being alive!

My friend and I started a kind of side project...even though neither of us have any other projects. We plan on making all of our music totally free and downloadable. If we make EPs, they'll be put up on torrent sites, but we do hope to make them buyable if people so desire (they'll be made by us directly, no middle man). We're thinking of making some shirts too, if we find that people really like what we're doing.

We try to define ourselves as being a mix of Hellogoodbye, PlayRadioPlay!, and Ratatat.

Definitely will do - we'd love to take the band interstate sometime, but we should probably get our EP sorted first.

Incidentally, we have a new song (http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Artists/View.aspx?artistID=20891) up at the triplej unearthed site now. To anyone that helped get us on the charts (and stay there for a second week), thanks again!

Oh, I might as well throw this out there too - one thing we get asked a lot (as I'm sure most bands do) is what we sound like, and we don't really know (I mean, we know our influences but that doesn't really mean that's what we sound like). If anyone has some time to kill and feels like doing us a favor, have a listen to a few of our songs (http://www.myspace.com/fritzwicky) and let us know what you hear in there. (it could be frowned upon asking for replies in this thread, so maybe PM could be better?)
