Title: Always properly tag your music
Post by: Mnementh on 17 Nov 2007, 00:11
I know it probably doesn't need mention here, but seriously, always tag your music properly.

I'm so angry over this that I am going to go buy the album on compact disc and report this torrent.  I wasted 300+ megabytes and 24 hours downloading this only to find that some dude managed to turn this recording of La Traviata (http://www.amazon.com/Verdi-Traviata-Sutherland-Pavarotti-Manuguerra/dp/samples/B0000041Y9/ref=dp_tracks_all_1#disc_1) (click for original track listing) into this:

My favourite poor tags are always the ones that forget disc number, album, capital letters or some combination of the three.

There are some seriously dumb taggers out there. It's not like it's tough.
Title: Re: Always properly tag your music
Post by: IronOxide on 17 Nov 2007, 00:19
It is indeed not hard, as 99.5% of albums will be ripped with correct tracks when you rip the CD using any kind of not shitty program.

Even most of the shitty ones do it now.
Title: Re: Always properly tag your music

That's what pisses me off so much.  It takes effort to screw up tags that much, especially to turn a two disc set into a three disc compilation.  Further, if one is tagging it manually, could you at least be consistent about how you name tracks and the like?

Seriously.  I shouldn't be as mad as I am, but it set off my OCD.

No, you totally should.

Since OiNK is now basically just down I should go in and completely re-organize my iTunes folder. Some of them are tagged so poorly it's embarrassing for me personally.
Title: Re: Always properly tag your music

I hate it so much, my OCD says "no can't be like that, must be like it would be if you bought it". I tag my music really, really well and i'm proud of that. I make sure enough fields are filled accurately and I'm pedantic about the genre.

Title: nah, it's cool.

Now, when I bring this up in the sendspace thread, I'm the bad guy, now it has it's own thread!

Is it necessary to input the disc number when there's only one disc? How do you define the genre? Are Crap/Not Crap acceptable genres?
I downloaded No Pocky For Kitty and forgot about it a while, I was tagging my music and I noticed that the guy I'd downloaded it from had tagged the genre as 'NOT CRAP!'. This is hilarious to me!

Usually when I download something with the wrong tags, I'll just erase it and find somewhere else to get it. Unless I really really want it, then I burn it to disc and rip it with the correct info. Auto-Tagging software never works well for me. I always have album art added, I have various softwares that automatically do this for me when I add to my library, it works half the time. Bootlegs are often a hassle, as finding a suitable image of the band can be a nightmare.

Make sure your other media is properly tagged! Every TV show I have ever downloaded has been tagged as a movie with no information other than the name of the show. The same applies to movies and music videos.
But I get my music videos from Youtube so...
Anyway, TV shows are horrible to tag because I can't tag multiple TV shows are the same time.

ieatbrainz is supposed to be a good piece of software for tagging. Doesn't really work for me, but maybe you'll have better luck?

Tags are very important. If you think they're not, you're an asshole. A goddamn ASSHOLE. I apologise to the rest of you, but you, sir, are A FUCKING ASSHOLE!

Can we get a guide in here for proper tagging etiquette, what's appropriate, what isn't? What to do if for whatever reason, tagging isn't working?

I should probably get on that too.  Poor tagging irritates the shit out of me.  Not only is it harder to find what you're looking for, but it burns a lot time trying to organize.  I could be doing better things with that time.  Like stealing more music from the internet.

Does anyone remember back in the old days, with things like Kazaa, where you'd have tracks tagged with completely the wrong artist? I vividly remember a kid once who told me what a big Cradle of Filth fan he was, saying that one of his favourite songs was their cover of 'Fear of the Dark'.

You know, the one by Graveworm.

Or when a track would be tagged with multiple artists cause one of them has to be correct, right?

Fur Elise has been on the top-played Mozart tracks on last.fm since forever.

People on the internet are stupid.

If you get a poorly-tagged album you know you can pretty much fix it in 10 seconds flat with an app like Tag & Rename, right? Means I can download scene releases without having to spend ages fixing 'em manually or having my computer full of those utterly retarded filenames.

Being a generally OCD bastard about things of this nature, I always tag everything the same way. I have around 87 gigs on my itunes and for each song it's: song title, artists, album title, track #/out of #, disc #/out of # for anything with more than one disc. I never include album artist, grouping, composer, or genre. I don't really ever do year either, although I kinda want to go through and add the year for all of them. I just don't have the drive as it would take hours.
Title: Re: Always properly tag your music

I can edit all my tags in my music player, Amarok. Although once I spent ages fixing all the screwed up tags on Misery Is A Butterfly and then it reverted back to the old tags for some reason. It had most of the songs under the wrong title and Equus twice! AAAAAAAAHHRG.

I think I'm going to tidy up my music collection again over the winter holidays. All 1 week 4 days worth of listening of it.

I always have the year in the album folder (so they all line up nicely in chronological order when I browse through 'em) so yeah, never paid much attention to the year field in the tags.

Code: [Select]
-V 2 --vbr-new --add-id3v2 --pad-id3v2 --ta "%a" --tt "%t" --tg "%m" --tl "%g" --ty "%y" --tn "%n" %s %d

that is probebly the best way to tag your albums. On a related note, i remember that in the old days itunes had a tagging system that was a bit different from most other apps, this is probably why some of my albums are perfectly tagged in foobar, but when i switch them to itunes shit goes crazy (mostly track numbers)

I just thought I'd try and make sense of what this guy did that fucked the tagging's up enough to actually annoy someone for more than the 5 minutes it takes to fix them (I mean, seriously...). To me it looks like he had downloaded chunks of the record from three different people, maybe due to connections failing on P2P networks, and these three people had their version tagged consistently but different from one another.

Because I have done that. Granted, I standardised them later, but some people actually don't care.

I'm crazy pedantic about tags too, so on that note, here's a question: what do you to keep iTunes from reverting back to the original bad tags that the files had when you downloaded them?

I've capitalized all the song names on that Battles album more times than I can count...and I'd rather not add more to that total.

It auto-fills from memory. Erase the bad tag and press ok. Then edit the file(s) again and the bad tag will no longer be in iTunes' memory and it will let you input whatever the fuck you want.

I am basically as obsessive about my tags as everyone else in this thread. All my music is tagged completely and correctly except for genres, because they are not an exact science and I cannot convince myself to spent the 10+ hours it would take to fix 'em all.

Not as crazy as me!

It was bucketing and I was all like "duh, i'm gonna change the genre of every beck song i have" so i opened up wikipedia and 5 hours later I'd classified every song of his that I have.

2 hours later i opened iTunes and the genres had switched back.

Why bother properly tagging the genres? I don't get it. Do you ever sit down and think "oh, today I shall listen to some Dream-pop Shoegaze/Post-hardcore. I wonder what artists that will involve?"? I just hide the "Genre" column in my media library so that I don't have to be irritated with the inconsistencies therein.

The same with last.fm tags. The amount of retards you see squabbling over an incorrectly placed "post-" prefix in a bands "most tagged" (or whatever) section is stunning. Why not just STOP TAGGING GENRES.

Yes, actually. I'm in the mood for certain types of music on certain days and a poorly organized Genres column means I have to scroll to each band and/or make an on-the-go playlist. Pain in the ass.

Also, Wikipedia is a shitty place to look for genres. They're often inaccurate, and most of the time all it says is "alternative" or "rock."

Genres are the only thing I don't tag. I don't really see the point.

My genre field tends to just get random words based on mood. There's a good few albums scattered around my pc of the 'butts' genre.

Then again I never organise my files by genre in a player, so this hasn't come back to haunt me yet.

About 6 months back, my flat mate and I basically swapped our entire mp3 collections, copying our own stuff onto the other's iPod. Since then I've been happily listening to 69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields, which was in his collection.

It was only last week that I discovered that somehow in ripping the CDs, he managed to get the track order completely wrong, and never fixed it, meaning that I've been listening to a different album to the rest of the world (kind of). I'm thinking I'll just download it somewhere, rather than try to sort through all 69 songs.

With the old versions of Windows Media Player, this would happen sometimes if you started ripping the CD from a track in the middle of the CD. The track you started on would be #1, and then all the other tracks would get numbered in the wrong place. I think they've fixed it now, but I use winamp.

winamp actually has an automatic tagger that does it fairly well (haven't had any problems yet). It uses the Gracenote database and its standards.

Incidentally, that's how I got into death metal and stuff.  I was looking for Metallica songs, I think Orion was what I was looking for, and this song pops up titled 'Burning Angel' from their album 'Wages of Sin'.  I listened to it a few times and thought to myself "man, this must be OLD Metallica", and "this shit is RAW".  After a few weeks I decided to try to find the rest of the album.  I found only four other songs from it, Ravenous, Web of Lies, Enemy Within, and Shadows and Dust.  And THEN I found out it was a chick singing the words.

As for retagging all my music, fuck that.  I'll do it on a need-to/feel-like-it basis, because I've got too much.  I think most of it is in something of a consistent format anyways.

I actually enjoy re-tagging things, because of my OCD symptoms. It's fun to organise shit, man.

My music is in a folder marked music.

Each artist has their own folder. In the folder is a folder for each complete album (or if I have most of an album sans its cack tracks, which is only about two records and that was only for space reasons before I got the new hard drive, so I should update it) organised in release date order. There are also any extraneous tracks which don't even warrant a b-sides/rarities or miscellaneous live tracks folder. Then each song is named as track number (STARTING WITH A ZERO IF IT IS SINGLE DIGIT), album artist, album, year, song artist, song, and if necessary, additional featured artists.

DK, you just went up like twelve points in my book. I'm nearly as anal as you about tagging my music (I always go Artist - Album - Disc - Track - Song, as I find tagging things with track number first leads to massive confusion when organizing by filename) and I cannot stand iTunes, iPods or anything else Apple. I own a Creative Zen Vision:M mp3 player and love it. 30 gigs, the thing is a workhorse - it's lasted me for 3.5 years of at least 7 hours per workday of constant use. I've dropped the thing a million times and still haven't had any problems with it, although the top section is separated a bit from the bottom section.

There's a 'Composer' tag for a reason, you know.  The Artist tag should be the performer.

Most last.fm people disagree but those people are less fun to be around than I am so they are wrong.  Their approach is to tag the composer in the "Artist" field and the artist in "some other field".  I mean that's theoretically ok (ignoring the fact that there is a perfectly good ID3 tag called 'Composer') because you still retain all the information, but the biggest issue is the fact that I do not want to have to retag 3000 tracks just because last.fm doesn't work the  way it should.

So yeah, put the composer's name in the Composer tag, and the artist's name in the Artist tag.  Pretty self-evident really.

Taggin FLAC and SHN files is where it gets tricky.
For FLAC since the format doesn't hold on to the tags itself (I think...) you have to have the MD5 file to tell your media player what the song is, but sometimes they load properly and you're stuck with a music library with a bunch of Album: Unknown.  Artist: Unknown.  Title: Track01, Track02, etc.

I don't even KNOW what the deal with SHN is.

People have made slightly more ridiculous posts on this forum before now and meant them.

Hell, even if they hadn't, it wouldn't surprise me if someone had an opinion that ridiculous.

I was thinking this thread was just a bunch of guys wasting time whining, until you reminded me what a pain tagging 69 Love Songs was.

It soured me so much that I don't even listen to it, just Get Lost

So yeah, tag well.
