So Long, Castle Road is the debut EP from Polymaths, a band from where I live. It isn't officially released yet; however, when it is, it will be available across Canada. They're on Young Soul Records, which is a record label started by members of National Frost, another band around here. Young Soul has a distribution deal with Sonic Unyon.
It's pretty exciting, but that's not why I'm posting this. I'm not even posting this because I appear on the record, though I'm part of the gang vocals on the first and last tracks (the harmony at the end of the first track is me). I'm putting this up for you because I genuinely love what they've done. It's a remarkable half-hour of catchy, sonically dense pop music, painstakingly arranged and marvelously executed.
I mean it when I tell you to watch out for this band. They have a lot more in them yet.

I'm downloading it now, will report back captain
-
Christ dude, you weren't kidding when you said catchy.
-
I downloaded it. I'll give it a listen when I remember to add it to my library in Foobar.
-
Okay, first track is great. That's as far as i have gotten.
-
I am playing guitar for them on Boxing Day. It's pretty rad - I convinced them to do a Thin Lizzy-style twin-guitar melody at the end of "Strike" to close out the song.
-
I love the title of the last song.
-
Apparently one of the teams that participates in either the Lumberjack Games or the Highland Games out in Nova Scotia listens to that song and sings along as a team prior to every game.
-
These guys are pretty awesome, Johnny.
-
Catchy pop music is definitely right, I like it a lot.
-
I too enjoy this greatly. I've been playing it all day whilst driving my friends around the town, it suits the 41 C weather perfectly.
-
So I have listened to this probably three times now, and it has reminded me that it is possible to make pop music that does not sacrifice some semblance of originality.
Nicely done, Polymaths. Nicely done.
-
Interesting story: My sister enjoyed this album, even though she usually hates my music. She will now not stop asking me to give her "the Saskatchewan song", so named because that's the only lyric she can remember.
-
A concert held at the house of two Polymaths on Friday night resulted in donations of $657, which is about $57 more than they needed to press the record.
With any luck the street date is February. Get your cash ready, kids.
-
Is there any album art that goes with this?
-
Not until it is officially and legally released, I'm afraid. If it makes you feel better the art is supposedly pretty nice.
-
I listened to this and it was pretty neat. Then I listened to it a couple more times and was really tempted to try and find Richard Kingsmill's email address.
(he's a radio person here in australia, does the new music show on triple j, seems to like good things)
-
This sneaks up on you. It is sneaky, and delicious.
-
I was tentative when you said "catchy pop music", but this is pretty swell, Johnny.
-
I just wanted to show my respects, as I've been listening to The Polymaths for a few days now.
This band is a pretty awesome 'feel-good' indie-pop band. They don't bring a whole lot new to the table, but they're definitely awesome to just listen to and chill with. I like it!
Keep us posted!(punnotintended)

I've been trying to hold it, but I can't.
MY FLANNEL IS RED, MY HAIR IS UNRULY,
EVEN MY MOTHER CAN'T LOVE THIS FACE TRULY,
THE BRIGHT CITY LIGHTS, SO MUCH TO DISCOVER,
I'M GONNA REACH OUT AND FIND ME A LOVER,
I'M A JACK OF ALL TRADES, BUT MOSTLY OF LUMBER,
I TOPPLED THOSE TREES WITH GREAT CHOPS OF THUNDER,
DOWN TO THE STUMPS, WELL AIN'T THAT A PITY,
I'LL CLEARCUT YOUR HEART ON MY WAY TO THE CITY.
-
Sorry for the bump, but this is just excellent. Do they have any other material?
-
This is their first recorded output, and technically it's not even for sale yet. A strong response would make it easier for them to keep recording and probably even tour.
I'll let you guys know when it's for sale, I promise. In the meantime, feel free to let them know what you think (http://www.myspace.com/polymaths).
-
This is freakin' awesome. I don't buy music very often, but I will definitely buy this album when it comes out officially. :-)
-
I've been listening to this at least once every day since I downloaded it. It's exactly what I wanted, even though I didn't know it. :-)
The only criticism I have is that 'strike' is quite a powerful song, but the rest of them aren't as powerful. But they are still excellent.
-
Guys, this is quite silly. I see some of you on the last.fm page for Polymaths, and I actually recognize the names or avatars.
-
Dammit, I listened to them so much on my Ipod but when I tried to scrobble the 40 or so listens it gave me an error. Doh!
My last.fm username is bbqrocks, btw. I left a comment on the polymaths page...Anyone gonna put in a description?
-
thanks for this, it's really great. i'll be sure to purchase it when it gets a proper release.
-
Wow, I'm on my second listen and I really like them. Thanks for the upload! I'm adding them on myspace.
Johnny, you should have them check out last.fm - apparently they're doing a program now where artists can put up full songs earn royalties on them. Might be something they want to check out. http://blog.last.fm/2008/01/23/free-the-music

The reason I know this is because I am audibly singing it on the track.

A month and a bit, kids.

That is an excellent cover!
-
I lost the EP when my old computer crashed. I really enjoyed it when I had so if I have the money I'll buy a copy when it's released.
-

In a ridiculous accent.
-
After seeing all those positive comments I'd love to listen to this EP aswell, however the link in the first post seems to be dead. Is there any way someone could upload it? I'd be very grateful! Thanks a lot in advance.
-
Yeah, the download link in the first post is dead. Could someone upload it again?
-
You could have a look at the myspace page linked above. linked (http://www.myspace.com/polymaths) again for emphasis.
Jonny this sounds brilliant. I'll definitly be looking out for this record when it comes to stores.
-
The EP is ready.
You'll be able to get it from Sonic Unyon (http://www.sonicunyonstore.com/) or iTunes within the month, and if you're too antsy to wait for that you can e-mail Craig at happinessisawarmgun_ [at] hotmail [dot] com.
-
So, literally months after that last post, I have received word about two things.
1) They will soon be getting reviews in, so far, Chart and Magnet.
2) The EP will finally - finally - be available from Sonic Unyon on October 28th.
-
I hadn't clicked the link until just now. What a pleasant surprise...
-
Aw. I definitely want this now.
-
anyone have a working actual download for this?
-
You can hear like 2/6ths of the album on myspace. You should definitely buy this if you like what you hear there because they need your cash to keep making sweet music.
-
You can get it digitally from Sonic Unyon (http://www.sonicunyonstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=1250_1260&products_id=2160&osCsid=ca9368cd1df0d6870d8a99e295b96dd7) or, if you'd like, directly through myself (if you want a physical copy - give me a week to iron out details on this as I'll have to figure out shipping costs).
Sorry there's no easy outlet to just get a CD, I don't know what the fuck.
-
p.s. when my EP comes out you will just be able to get it digitally from me for free and if you want a hard copy just ask me and we can Do Business
-
From the reviews given on this page, I already know I like it, and I haven't listened to it yet.
MySpace is being a butt by not loading properly, so my hunger for new good music groans on for now.
Oh, sweet it loaded.
This is frigging great...
Shit...
-
p.s. when my EP comes out you will just be able to get it digitally from me for free and if you want a hard copy just ask me and we can Do Business
When is this going to be?
-
And are you doing vinyl, like you were contemplating?
-
I am picking this up once I clear my credit card bill (only 250$ to go!)
-
yo i know we haven't done this topic in a while but if you bought the album in any form please send me a PM, there are some royalty issues goin on
-
What happened?
-
They haven't been contacted by the people who put their record on iTunes so if there's been sales they haven't seen a cent.
-
Well, shit, man. If they have a paypal or something, I'll give them whatever percentage of profits they were supposed to get.
-
If you've bought it already, you've done your part.
-

-
That song's pretty good, even for a "rough mix".
What direction are they going in, do you know? Are they trying to get signed, or is this more of a hobby than anything else?
EDIT: They're signed to Young Soul Records, so nevermind.
-
So I tried to find Duet to give it a listen today and couldn't find a copy. Does this music still exist anywhere? Their myspace seems defunct.
At least Strike (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyzaH5eiowA) is still around.
