I didn't realise there were actually people who opened their shit on Christmas Eve.

Or do you just open as soon as the clock strikes twelve?

You didn't have a DS yet?

Jesus, you have like 3 years of games to catch up on. Good luck.

2) Yes, I joined on Christmas. I'm a regular Jesus.

3) I have a DS phat that is currently a work of art in progress. This is for playing.

So far I have gotten a coat and the promise of a new Euphonium for college, and it's not even Christmas Day.

It's going pretty hot so far, pictures maybe later.

We celebrate and open stuff on Christmas Eve, as it is tradition here.

I got the following (click to enlarge):
(http://photo.tykjpelk.net/zenphoto/cache/jul/IMG_0136%201.JPG_595.jpg) (http://photo.tykjpelk.net/zenphoto/albums/jul/IMG_0136%201.JPG)
That light blue stuff on the left; Hilary Duff perfume and body lotion. Not wished for, still very sceptical towards the smell.
(http://photo.tykjpelk.net/zenphoto/cache/jul/IMG_0139%201.JPG_595.jpg) (http://photo.tykjpelk.net/zenphoto/albums/jul/IMG_0139%201.JPG)
The Converse shoes are too big, so I'm not sure I'll wear them - maybe, if they don't give me blisters and stuff (they were on sale, so I got them in the Christmas stocking, and can't be returned for another size). The hat is wonderful.

Some of the stuff that is kinda scrunched up includes pyjamas, a t-shirt in some kind of fabric that makes it awesome (I don't know the English word - it's the kind of stuff that keeps you warm and dry etc), seven pairs of socks, and wool socks. Also, 1000NOK, which is almost $180.

There's like, less than 10 that he 'needs' to play.

That depends on what you consider 'needs'. I think I have at least 20 DS games at this point, actually. I'm still pissed that I lost my copy of Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time though...
Title: Re: Official Holiday Haul?
Post by: Spinless on 24 Dec 2007, 19:17
'needs' is why you should send me half those DS games, you greedy hog! Jeeze, leave some for other people!

Nah, it's rather awesome! Victorinox kitchen knife - superb quality, and kinda expensive. Got the bread knife last year, and I'll probably wish for one of those little knives that are good for fruits and vegetables next year.

A proper chef's knife is the first knife for the kitchen you should ever own.  Everything else you can go without if need be, but not a chef's knife.

$220 in Amazon.com gift certificates that I will probably be converting into a Kitchen-Aid Artisan stand mixer and a cheap (but as far as I can tell from the reviews, functional) pasta roller.  A creme brulee torch, massive yay.  Lots of cookies, candy, and other sugary items.  And my dad is taking me skiing tomorrow.  That's what I know about so far, but I have more on the way (a couple people have already apologized to me for the fact that their gifts are/will be late).

My ex knit it for me, and gave it to me the last day of term (Last day ever at that school since I am transferring), because I introduced her to Firefly.

That, and my parents gave me a $50 Amazon certificate, plus whatever gets opened this morning.

right, so the rest of my stuff are:

-a poster that has "Shit Happens"  worded according to various institutions and beliefs i.e "Disneyism -Bad shit doesn't happen here," Buddhism, Atheism and so on ans so forth (jeez, never seen that one beforeat every mall I've ever been to) from my brother. He even framed it.

-a Power Strip with analog timer for day and night functions for my python's terrarium from my sis (extremely practical)

-a fleece sweater from my dad that's 2 times too big

-and a shirt/undershirt combo that is extremely soft and a little bit small(skin-tight) from my grandmother.

-So add that to my new iPod and Wacom Tablet (which both should be arriving within the next few days) interesting haul.

Heh, I bought my littler brother Blade Runner Ultimate Edition and that horror/comedy Blacksheep, he likes 'em.

Around $600 from various relatives &c.
Leaf Storm by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
The Collected Short Stories of William Faulkner
A book of Turner paintings/watercolors
An encyclopedia of film
A book on cult films
Le Circle Rouge on Criterion DVD
Candy

I guess since I didn't ask for anything, I can't question, but some of these things have me wondering how they arrived at them.
-Two T-shirts
-A blank T with some paint, I guess they saw that I made one tee with a stencil and decided I need a ton of paint?
-Camelbak Nalgene clone
-LED headlamp?
-Book, "I Hate Anne Coulter," should be funny.

Also, I kind of feel terrible for bad mouthing the iPhone to my parents, apparently they got my sister one.

My girlfriend gave me a really nice Ralph Lauren wallet,  a nice scarf, and several books. I gave her small diamond studs, several scarves, and an iTunes gift card.

My sisters gave me a baking stone and mixing bowls, and I gave one sister a silverware set, and the other a variety of loose teas. I gave my father Feist's The Reminder and Springsteen's Magic, and my mother a suet holder for the bird feeders. My parents gave me a set of cocktail forks and knives, a fancy corkscrew (Metrokane Rabbit), half a dozen bottles of wine, a new Airport, and a KitchenAid Stand Mixer.

It's been a nice Christmas.

I am thoroughly satisfied with my "haul" this year:

-80 GB Zune 2
-One of these types of hats:

-A bunch of shirts.  A few are too large for me, so I'm going to try to shrink them in the dryer, and one is this uber comfy collared shirt.
-An electric toothbrush type thing.

And I think that's it.

I live in germany, so I got most of my gifts on christmas eve.

let's see...

-two pairs of pants (lsand-colored corduroy and brown-ish Denim that kind of looks like raw leather)
-A sweater
-A nice Hoody
-three longsleeves (Some of my relatives seem to have discovered longsleeves just recently, I already got 2 for my birthday earlier this month. But I'm ot complaining, they're good to wear under sweaters when it's cold outside.)
-chocolate

But the best was this book:

it's by one of my most favourite wildlife-cameramen, Andreas Kieling.

Uh.. Let's see, it was a pretty small haul this year because my mom gave me 250 dollars for Christmas. However, I know it's not about getting but.. I'll list why I'm somewhat dubious about some of the gifts:

Three Pairs of Socks(this is basic, can't complain, can't like it? They're brown.)
A Necklace and earring set with fish bones on it(this is my favorite present, my sister made it for me)
A hat(this is pretty nice, I like hats)
3 boxes of chocolate(I think this is a present for them, everyone knows I don't like or eat a lot of chocolate.)
A bar of chocolate(see above)
A can of cashews(I don't eat nuts)
A necklace with a cursive A on it(it's not my style but it's uh.. fancy? I dunno conservative looking, it'll be good for fancy occasions)
A pair of earrings(I like them but I can't wear them, despite the fact I told the girl that gave them to me I can't wear anything with nickel, lead, etc in them. She got them for me anyway.)
A Lish bath ball(can't use it, gives me rash)
Four bottles of bath stuff(I can use it, but I prefer not to because if I use it then I have to shower off after my bath, but it'll be nice occasionally. Also gives me a rash if I don't wash it off properly)
Travel Shampoo(even though I can just pour my current shampoo into a smaller bottle. Nice gesture though)
A travel bathroom kit(With everything but a razor, the only thing I really wanted for that sorta stuff)
Some white asian tea(which I don't like white tea, which my mother knows)
A nice scarf(I like this, I like scarves)
Another necklace( I like this, but once again the metal thing, but it's not as bad as with earrings so I can wear it occasionally)

Gifts from friends:
A mug(It's nice weight)
Pair of stud earrings(Omfg I can wear them ohmy.gif)
A pack of playing cards(..I don't know what this one means)

I guess I was more bummed out that I didn't ask for barely anything, like.. four things, and didn't get any of them(IE A tea kettle, new PJs, Phantom hourglass for my DS, a new bra)

I wish I had gotten more video games.

but overall I had a good christmas more because people didn't forget me :3

I almost forgot my favorite pre-christmas gift My Jingle Spells CD from M'boy. I also just realized it seems like it's alot but it's all very inexpensive or hand made stuff.

As is the case year in and year out, my parents tell me that this year's going to be tight for them and they can't afford much for my siblings and I.

I was smart enough to go nuts on them anyway, which was smart as they spent way more than they should've:

Boston Red Sox World Series Collector's Edition DVD (8 Disc set including the full broadcasts of the last seven games of the playoffs)
Home Movies Season Four
Futurama - Bender's Big Score
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Special Edition DVD

MLB Power Pros for Wii (Supposedly the best baseball sim on the system)
Final Fantasy XII - Revenant Wings for Nintendo DS

A full set of those Star Wars stamps they released over the summer (Which are surprisingly awesome)
A couple of towels (Shane, Rachel and Huda can all vouch for my incredible need for some)
A set of gold emblazoned baseball cards of the entire 2007 Red Sox 25-man playoff roster
A Futurama calender
A Dr. Zoidberg figure (Who now proudly stands atop my monitor)

Also, Rachel got me a Red Sox shot glass and will not be getting pajama pants from me. Good guess, though.

Does he know he is about to get mauled by a bear?

I got a bunch of stuff. Slippers, whisky, chocolates, money, shower gel, shaving foam, and a large sum of money which I will be using to pay for a trip to Toronto for the 20th of June next year. See you there QCites. Oh I will also be spending some of the money on booze and the evil dead trilogy box-set. Boom Boom.

Is it me, or did you actually just get an overnight bag rather than Christmas gifts?
I think it may just be you, but if not at least it's an awesome overnight bag. The electric toothbrush is niiice, as are a lot of the other gifts. Way better than last year.

4-6 sweaters

.... 5 sweaters?

Two of them can be turned inside out to make two different sweaters, hence 4-6.
4, 6 if you include the inversions.

Christmas is almsot over here!  I ate alot and took a nap.

I totally read this at first as "I ate a lot and took a crap."  That made me chuckle.

I got clothes and some cologne.  I'm too old and poor to get toys anymore; when you're raising your 17 year old sister and have a 3 year old as a parent you take a backseat.  The best part was Nathan seeing the tree and saying "Santa was here!  Santa was here!"  This is the first year he's really known what's going on.  It was better than any gift ever.

I don't really care about Christmas gifts. I like to make and give things to people but as for receiving I just see it as an opportunity to get stuff that I have been meaning to buy because I never go out and buy anything ever. The season is nice though because my siblings come home and we make food and play video games. My brother and I beat Mario today!

- Metroid Prime 3 Corruption
- Phantom Hourglass
- Moneys
- Two shirts, one of which has neat octopuses on it
- A new hoodie that is a pretty light green type color and also I spent fifteen minutes trying to figure out what the pattern was. I think it is a bunch of skulls which I am not actually too fond of, but they still look cool and I think there are a few dinosaur skulls on it which makes up for it.
- My sister and I also made cinnamon rolls!

Perhaps pictures later. If I get around to it they might just be of the rolls because got-damn those were fucking delicious

My gran and aunt gave me cash and a few little things.

I'm going to buy a beginner guitar with the cash.

Next year I am giving my mother a list of the things I want with links to the websites where you can get them. Either that or asking for cash, which I know people don't really like to give but at least then I'd be able to buy the things I want rather than be bought everything that I do not need.

sometimes they do!
i am incredibly hard to shop for because i am sort of a minimalist. as a weird person i also tend to only like weird things. if someone insists on getting me a gift, i'll usually give them a run down of some basic things i am in need of because as a broke-ass student the thought of somebody spending money on me, as thoughtful as the gift may have been, on something i frankly have no use for is immensely distressful. in all honesty i usually prefer to break tradition altogether and ask for money. no i do not actually care about the thought and i won't be offended that you don't know anything about me and didn't know what sort of gift i would want. i don't care. at this stage in my life helping me buy food and pay my bills is the best gift anyone can ever possibly give me.

I am the same way.  Luckily, my relatives have figured out that they don't need to buy me "gifty" things because it's Holidaymas.  I will be genuinely happy about a package of socks.

This year I asked for stuff to help me train for the half marathon I want to run in about 4 months, including an 8 gb Sandisk Sansa.  I'm finally on the mp3 player bandwagon!  It's a lot of fun to run with tunes!  It's a lot of fun to do EVERYTHING with tunes.   I plan to be that annoying person who's constantly wearing headphones for at least a month or two.  Or forever.

Running related things I got:
-Armband to hold Sansa and headphones that don't block out atmospheric sounds.  You know, for safety and shit.
-Climalite top and pants.
-Fleecy hat that is an eyesore shade of yellow.  Again, for safety and shit.
-Short shorts!

I did also get non-running related things.  Mostly things that help me not die because I live in Wisconsin.
-Long underwear.
-Gloves.
-Balaclava.
-Freaking sweet collapsible snow shovel.
-Vegan with a Vengeance (awesome cookbook).

I'm happy with this year.  I'm fond of practical things, so I'm really excited about that snow shovel and balaclava.  Never again will I kick and paw through a snowdrift to get to my car!  Never again will my nostrils freeze as I ride my bike to campus!  I might be exaggerating.  I will probably do lots more frantic digging and freezing.  And cursing.

I'm also really happy with what I gave other people.  It sounds corny, but I really do enjoy finding perfect gifts for people, and I think I did a good job this year.  I tried to be extra thoughtful to make up for being so very cheap.

Sometime you have to wait for presents. My parents ordered 2 books for me and so did my aunts and uncles (collectively) from A&R but the total of four books is yet to arrive. At least Ubik arrived.
Other than that I got some cheap, yet rather pleasant, t-shirts from K-mart as well as a pair of olive coloured shorts that came with an impossible belt.
I also joined the mp3 bandwagon and recieved $50 worth of borders vouchers.
My sister gave me The Importance of Being Earnest and Other Plays.

Darkblue: Headphones that doesn't block out external noise loses their entire point. You wear them so you can ignore people who shout at you in a socially acceptable way.

I agree completely, and that's why I have regular headphones that sound decent and sufficiently drown out noises.  I used them a lot when I lived in the dorms so I could pretend not to notice that my roommate was home and therefore not have to make awkward obligatory small talk that would distract me from whatever I was doing on my computer.

I like those headphones, and I'd rather not sweat all over them when I run.  So I asked for some cheapass $8 sportclips that I not only don't care about filthying with my perspiration, they're too crappy to drown out things like passing cars.  I kinda like to hear if a semi is careening towards me so that I can brace myself for the gust of wind, or leap frantically out of the way.

Fixed, antitheist means against any theism, anti-religion. Which Narnia is not.

However, I agree with Misconception. While I am definitely atheist, I still managed to enjoy Chronicles of Narnia as a great children's series, I just ignored its religious undertones just like I ignore the Bible. On a daily basis. She just returned from a trip to southeast Asia so I'm expecting something from there.

from friends:
-chopin's nocturnes. i already have a copy, but now i can have a copy to use at home and one at school!
-a peach-colored rose. when i say peach colored i mean it really made people remark, "wow, that looks like a peach or a nectarine." it was orange with red at the outer rims. i know florists probably accomplish this trick by adding dyes to the water but whatever, i thought it was pretty neat.
-temporary henna tattoos.
-earrings. each one is a plastic baby on top of a metal painted earth globe, the kind that has a political map on it. one baby is black and the other is white. fun fact: both have blue eyes for some reason!

from family:
-$50. i ended up regifting this a few days later though.
-earrings. relatively generic silver hoopy things. my aunt who gave them to me is a sweetie though!
-plain white tee. not sure if this counts as a christmas gift, but my mom paid for it on christmas eve.

isn't present-wrapping funny? i think it is funny. i mean, that is cool if you can get all into the details and the ribbons and stuff, cause i was like that for a few years too, but i am just lazier now. i just think it is interesting that we manipulate our emotions in such a conscious way, that we enjoy the suspense of not knowing, of hiding and uncovering, the process of revealing. rituals are funny!

If a Christian can enjoy and absolutely love His Dark Materials, an atheist can enjoy Narnia. It's, you know, fiction, so read it as such. Of course, Pullman absolutely hates Lewis and says so often; he thinks The Chronicles of Narnia are sexist.

Question! But only because I'm positive that my family doesn't read this board.

This year for Hanukkah, I got a card in the mail, informing me that my aunt, her husband, and her daughter made a donation in my name to a charity as a gift. My brother received the same gift. This charity was not a charity that I'd ever heard of, or one that I felt any particular inclination towards, although I'm sure that it is a good charity that does good work. There has been trouble in my family, especially between this aunt and her daughter and me and my mom. We gave her daughter (my cousin) a gift this year.

Is this bad etiquette? I feel like it is (as you can probably tell). I don't really care, but it seems rude that they didn't at least choose a charity that I care about.

I'm alright with it, Ally. A few years back, my uncle did the same thing, donating money to a charity in my name (I can't remember the name of it, but they provide wheelchairs to disabled children in poor countries). I thought it was a really nice gesture.

It wasn't a charity I would've given to on my own (those being the Jimmy Fund/Red Sox Foundation and Save The Music), but a good move either way.

honestly ally, i'd be miffed if my family did something like that for me. only because my entire family is religious and i am not, so knowing them they'd choose a very religious charity that i wouldn't donate to on my own.

this isn't to say that religious charities are bad... i'd just prefer to know that my money isn't going towards something that i don't believe in and have a slight bit of contempt for, you know?

basically, donating to a charity in someone's name as a gift is fine if you know it's a charity that that person knows of and supports. otherwise... kind of lame, should have done more research.

I don't know if it was a dick move.  If there was trouble in your family with them to begin with, I guess they can't be expected to try that hard.  I'm just wondering why you bother exchanging gifts anyway.

Yes. It is bad etiquette. Here's why - donations to charities are tax deductible. It's pretty common for people to do things in December that are write-off able (though that may not have been their goal). It would have been completely okay if you had mentioned a charity that you cared about and they made a donation to that charity. I've even heard of people having several different charities and having giftees choose the charity they wanted their gift to go to.

Also, sometimes people will lie and say they donated to a charity for you, even though they really didn't. Not saying that's what they did, but... *shrugs* Or they'll donate twenty bucks and tell everyone that they donated twenty bucks in their name. Not to mention the fact that you're supposed to give gifts that the receiver would want/appreciate, not what you want.

I personally would have just preferred a card with a hand-written note.

Giving donations for charities as gifts isn't really something I've thought about, but it has become increasingly popular here to give away goats, chickens, grandmas and stuff, meaning you "buy" one of those things (there are a bunch of other options), and then the person gets a card saying that a goat/chicken/grandma/latrine/whatever has been donated as their gift or something (some charities give away the actual thing you buy, others use it as a "symbol" for giving money or whatever). It seems to me like there are way more people giving these things away than actually saying they want them. It's sorta like "I couldn't think of anything to give you because you already have everything, so here's a goat." I wouldn't mind buying something like this to someone I knew wanted it or knew was into that kind of stuff, but otherwise, I'd be skeptical. Because I know I'd think it was kinda blah, even though it's probably "wrong" of me to feel that way - but I know I'm not the only one.

Christmas happens once a year, I'm a student living off of a student loan, there are things I want and need that I cannot afford, and getting nice things, even though not everyone buys stuff I need, once a year is nice (well, twice including my birthday, but I don't get a lot of gifts then). I'm already planning on donating to certain charities whenever I get a steady income, and I sometimes donate to charities now (although minimal amounts), and I kinda like deciding who to donate to and not.

I guess I feel like it was a bad move, yes.

Okay, I'm glad that I'm not being a spoiled brat. I haven't talked to my brother about it. pen, we still give gifts because we like to pretend that nothing is wrong.

On the upside, I did spend my Christmas serving lunch to people who had nowhere to go, which was cool. An old guy told me that he hoped that I would get married and stay married for a long, long time.

I think it's a deliberately pissy way of saying "you don't need/deserve a gift".

In this situation, yes.

However, I like the Humane Society and that's what my aunt and uncle did for my brother and I this year. They sent us a card because they probably didn't want us to think we don't exist or that we don't matter. Whether or not it's a tax write-off is irrelevant - the point is, the Humane Society has more money and my aunt and uncle made sure it happened on our behalf. They didn't ask, and if they had I probably would have said something like Oxfam, but since we have cats and they were adopted from the Humane Society I understand their reasoning.

In Ally's case, it was because that side of the family are fond of dick moves. In my case, I couldn't be happier with it.

The Legend of Drizzt Box Set I-III ([/nerd])

Which one is that?  Is that the one that's about his roots, where he escapes from the Underdark?  I thought it was a good series.

It's Homeland, Exile, and Sojourn.  All the Drizzt books (with the exception of the brand new ones) got new covers and they've all been put into this new series called "Legend of Drizzt."  It's everything from Homeland to Sea of Swords.

I done good!
I got a 26-inch widescreen flat-panel HD tv. Mom, my grandma and I paid for it together.
Guitar Hero 3 for the Wii
a nice blanket
a nice robe and matching slippers
cocoa mug with hot apple cider and hot cocoa packets
a silver dollar thing, I get one every year
nice towels
$20 gift certificate
Dethklok-The Dethalbum tshirt
a $5 gift certificate to Hot Topic ("Get it??? HUH GET IT? Maybe you should sleep on it and get a notary!" It's a joke about Metalocalypse)
a pretty giant sparkly ring, but not quite as pretty and/or sparkly as kizzie's
a big ol' record bag. The front of it is the cover of a vinyl record-an early Bob Dylan
Shower gel and lotion
kick-ass handmade mittens
aaaaaand Chuck Klosterman IV. Barnes and Noble were sold out, and B. Dalton only had one left. He's a fantastic writer; it still blows my mind when he writes about Wyndmere, which is veryvery close to my hometown, and he mentions names that I recognize from Lidgerwood. (All of these towns have way less than 1000 people, and that is why my mind is so blown)

This year I accrued the following items:

- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (paperback adult edition) by JK Rowling (duh but I'm going to be very thorough)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (hardcover adult edition) by JK Rowling
- The God Delusion (paperback) by Richard Dawkins
- Tango & Cash (DVD)
- The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Film Trilogy Boxed Set (DVD)
- a 2008 Futurama wall calander
- a pair of thongs
- $50 which I spent on a second hand copy of The Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion - Game of the Year Edition for my Xbox 360.

Perhaps more important are the gifts that I gave to other people:

- a "Pistols for Pandas" t-shirt from Homestarrunner.com
- a pink, "blinged out" infra red mouse (it is enrusted with fake jewels)
- a Nike synthetic leather golf glove
- the House Boxed Set - Seasons 1-3 (DVD)
- a wonderful Christmas lunch of roast lamb and roast vegetables with an entree of smoked salmon stuffed with sour cream, garlic and spring onions.

Appearently so. I haven't checked it out yet, so I'm not really sure what it's about, but I'm guessing they're funding grandparents somewhere in Africa so that they can take care of (their grand?)children whose parents have died of AIDS or other diseases. There has been some odd citations in the newspapers due to this thing, about selling grandmothers and stuff.

Yeah, he's in something like 13 or 14 books.  Only the early ones were about the Crystal Shard though.  I'm pretty sure they destroyed it in Streams of Silver, or one of the ones in that series.  I haven't read those in a long time.  The rest of them are about kicking the crap out of more drow and orcs and whatnot.  Fun times.
