Title: Tobacco thread
Post by: Patrick on 26 Dec 2007, 18:51
We have a thread for us to be beer snobs, why not a thread where we can be tobacco snobs? I just got some pipe tobacco today! Local stuff from Mission Pipe in Dublin, CA today as a Christmas gift from my friend, and the thread idea came to mind.

I miss tobacco. (Camel No.9's and Djarum's, how I miss thee...)

Okay, I'm not a huge smoker (I've switched to legal by the way, 6 months now) but I now smoke cigarettes, in the form of Marlboro Lights. Not the cheapest things on the market, not the most expensive, but they taste better than damn Newports. I've also thought about taking up pipe smoking, but I would think if I were to buy a pipe I'd want to go ahead and get a nice one (otherwise what's the point? You can get tobbacco in so many other forms) and I just don't think I can justify the cost for it right now. I need to buy a larger aquarium for my ball python and that set up is gonna be like 150 bucks. (we're talking waterfall here)

I also smoke the occasional cigar and I smoke Hookah regularly with my friends. As hard as I can try it, I can't really discern the difference in tastes for a lot of cigars. It would be really helpful if I could get any pointers on those from more experienced smokers on both selection and how to smoke it for maximum enjoyment.

Hookah I've been sticking to the really basic stuff that all but the flavor is written in Punjabi. The woman whose store I buy the stuff from has recently told me that she's got some more expensive shisha that she keeps behind the counter called Starbuzz for another customer who orders it, but she says she'd sell some to me too if I was interested (I've been been buying all cigarettes and hookah equipment from her shop for like a year). This stuff is like 30 bucks a container, and from the smell its really strong and obviously better quality than the stuff I buy for like $7.50, but I'm not sure if its worth it. Anyone else who happens to smoke Hookah could possibly reccomend this?

I don't know Starbuzz but if you're smoking regularly then it's probably worth at least trying some better quality stuff, and if you've found a good tobacconist then going on their recommendation isn't a bad idea. Of course they could be trying to burn you in your inexperience and it's actually a load of overpriced guff but if I was you I'd take a shot at it.

As for cigars they just might not be to your taste. I enjoy smoking and used to kick about with a guy who really knew his cigars, he had a humidor with a grand's worth in it of some of the best. Despite his efforts to get me into them they just weren't for me, I too couldn't tell the difference between a cigar that cost £12 and one that went for £75 and I eventually convinced him to stop wasting them on my defiantly uncultured tastebuds.

If you really enjoy smoking Marlboro shites then steer clear of pipes. They can give you a nice smoke, sure, but they're fuckers to keep going even if you have the knack. Go for some nicer pre-rolled (like anything) or some tasty rolling tobacco instead, a cheaper and more convenient proposition.

Idunno, pipe tobacco can be really nice, as I learned last night. Had some of the Vintage Cherry to start off, and then my second bowl was the Old Briar, and between the two, the Old Briar flavour was a lot better. Maybe it was just because I wasn't used to pipe smoking and it was my first bowl ever, but the Vintage Cherry had a much more sour taste than the Old Briar. I'll give it another run when I get back home.

Post by: a pack of wolves on 27 Dec 2007, 09:42
Oh, I wasn't trying to say pipe tobacco can't be nice. But if you're only smoking something like Marlboro, and the nasty kind of Marlboro at that, then there's a huge variety of smokeables that are a lot easier to use to investigate before plunging into the world of pipes. Plus, it will give him time to grow a good handlebar moustache so when he does smoke one he can look like a true chap.
Title: Re: Tobacco thread
Post by: Boro_Bandito on 27 Dec 2007, 12:38
Hey, the Marlboro is just what I smoke during the day before I can get home to a nice relaxing couch and my hookah with a couple of friends to hang out. The only reason I mentioned that as a smoking habit was because it happens to be one way of getting your nicotine fix and so thus belongs in this thread, so I thought. Just think of it as the cheap beer of the tobacco world, nobody really likes the flavor, but it gets the job done until you can get to better stuff.

If I started taking up pipe smoking I really would see it as something to do when I have time to enjoy it, not while I'm driving to my job or to school, or in between classes. Much like how I smoke my precious precious hookah. Point taken on that by the way, I'll save up for a while and buy some of the Starbuzz, the ones she showed me really did smell amazing.

I tried a cigar once.  It made my mouth and throat feel like they were coated in rubbery ash.  It was a very cheap one that I bought at the grocery store more as a costume prop than something to actually enjoy.  Maybe a better one wouldn't be so disgusting to me, but as far as I can tell I just don't like 'em.  That's probably a good thing.  I have enough vices.

I don't smoke much tobacco, but these are my thoughts on the subject:

Cigars- Only worthwhile if you get good ones. I smoked a Romeo y Julieta Cuban for my 18th, tasty.
Hookah- Fuck you, I don't care that it's trendy, it's awesome.
Cigarettes- Ew. DIAF.
Pipe- Haven't tried, want to buy a nice pipe, because it smells good.

Rolling tobacco is my poison of choice. Cutter's Choice generally. Is anyone knowledgeable about the fancier rolling tobaccos? Are there fancy rolling tobaccos? Also, yes. There is no point smoking a cigar unless it is a fairly good one at the very least.

I've been a non-smoker for over 4 years now. Back when I was smoking, I was at 2 packs of Marlboro Lights a day.

There's an incredible tobbaco lounge called Marshall McGearty (http://www.smokerswelcome.com/MAR/dtclogin.jsp?brand=MAR) in Chicago. They have 4 or 5 different tobacco blends that they roll for you in the store while you wait (or you can buy pre-rolled packs). I've tried one version - very tasty. If you're a smoker and you're ever in Chicago, I definitely recommend visiting that place. If I still smoked, I'd be there all the time. They have a full bar as well. (I don't know how the whole No Smoking Anywhere Starting January 1st is going to affect the store, though.)

As for cigars, I enjoy the occassional cigar with friends. Cigar smoking, to me, is all about the social aspect. A buddy went to Mexico on his honeymoon and brought me back a Romeo y Julieta Cuban. I smoked it on my balcony one evening - it was a fine cigar, but not very enjoyable as I wasn't chatting with anyone, having a drink as well, etc. Whereas I had a cheap cigar with a bunch of friends on the beach, it was after the most perfect summer day spent doing beach activities (11-0 record at Bags that day!) with a tall Gin+Tonic in my hand, and it was the greatest cigar I've ever had. I'm no connoisseur, but there is a definite difference between a Swisher Sweet, a $4 cigar and a $14 cigar. I'm partial to the Macanudo brand, in the corona size (can't remember offhand the blend I like).

Can't say i'm much of a fan of tobacco unless there is a bit of a little green plant added into the mixture. Although even for that you can really tell the difference if your smoking hand rolling tobacco or fag tobacco. Its just a lot smoother and nicer. I can never see why people would roll with fag tobacco over rolling tobacco. I just think Cigars smell horrible, i've heard Hookah can be really good but have never tried it. And i'm not really a pipe fan.

I used to smoke pre-rolled cigarettes but to be honest, after I got poor and switched to hand rolled I realised that I much prefer rolling my own, not to mention that the tobacco lasts a lot longer than a pack of 20. I was smoking Golden Virginia, which is quite nice but now I'm really getting poor and instead I'm just buying whatever I can get my hands on. In the past few weeks this has included Amber Leaf and Cutter's Choice. The Amber Leaf was really meaty and had a horrible peanut butter aftertaste. Not to say that I don't like peanut butter but it's not exactly what I want out of a smoke. The Cutter's Choice is much nicer although I think I've been spoiled by the Golden Virginia.

Cigars can be good too, but I think me smoking a cigar is the most ridiculous picture in the world, so it's a rarity when I do smoke them, and I believe it would be the same for a pipe. Still, I'm not ruling it out.

Also, whiskey tobacco is my favourite so far. I bought some for my Mum for her birthday a few years ago and it had the most amazing aroma. She let me try some and it was good, so when I get some money I'm definitely going to the tobacco shop in my town and buying some for myself.

Now I can see switching to roll my own, that would be nice if I want a nicer smoke in my day to day routine without it being too time consuming if I pre-made some.

You should, because Marlboro cigarettes are nasty nasty things. Even though I've smoked tobacco and shisha, those things still make me cough and choke when I inhale them secondhand.

Post by: Gemmwah on 27 Dec 2007, 17:15
To be honest though, as long as it's not Marlboro Reds then they're not too bad. The Menthols are good and the Lights are too, although they still catch in my throat a little because when I smoke pre-rolled I'm used to menthols anyway. I can think of many more cigarettes that are far worse.
Title: Re: Tobacco thread
Post by: Boro_Bandito on 27 Dec 2007, 17:33
Blegh towards menthols, I can't smoke them anymore.

Of course, nothing I think I'll ever smoke will compare to the smooth and luxurious smoke from a hookah, it can't be beaten by anything I know of.

Plus I sound like Darth Vader if I try to talk before exhaling.

My roommate and I discovered it felt like we were trying to talk with mouths full of marshmallow fluff in our mouths if we did that.

I've heard good things about Bali Shag, but I've never smoked a handrolled cigarette. It sounds interesting, and I may just have to talk to my tobacconist about it.

I miss the hookah we had when I lived in Cleveland, but I am probably going to get one next weekend. The days will be glorious.

Right now, I mostly smoke Splash cloves, or the cherry flavored ones, or Blacks, when I can steal them off of a few people. However, I'm looking into buying some Coklat, because they sound pretty awesome.

I haven't had a cigar in a while, but I keep telling myself that I will actually treat myself next paycheck and buy one. This has yet to happen.

HA. I know you have to have warning labels on tobacco products now, but that one's funny.

I really want to try hand rolled cigarettes. There was a project my freshman year that involved making multiples and one guy passed out hand rolled cigarettes and they smelled wonderful, but that was back when I didn't smoke and so I gave it to someone who did. The few people I do hang around with who smoke only smoke cloves, hookah, the kind of cigarettes you can get at a grocery store, and/or pipes.
Title: Re: Tobacco thread
Post by: supersheep on 28 Dec 2007, 05:16
Man I would like to try cloves sometime, must see if there's somewhere that sells them. Also, I have a soft spot for Amber Leaf, because it was my first rolling tobacco, but not so much on the taste, to be honest.
BONUS POINT: I smoked my first joint before I smoked my first cigarette.
Title: Re: Tobacco thread

HA. I know you have to have warning labels on tobacco products now, but that one's funny.

It's on the front side of every pack of tobacco and box of cigarettes in the country, afaik. The reverse has something less dramatic but equally informative like 'Smoking while pregnant can harm your baby' or whatever.

Oh oh, mine's got my favourite. 'Smoking can cause a slow and painful death.' Nice.

I too smoked my first joint before my first cigarette. And my second, third... I smoked weed for a good year-18 months before downgrading.
Title: Re: Tobacco thread
Post by: ledhendrix on 28 Dec 2007, 06:06
I like it how if you something like " drinking this will kill you ", you probably wouldn't do it, but nobody cares that its on the front of tobacco packets. "oh smoking kills, would you look at that *sparks up*"

Smoked my first joint a couple of years ago. Still smoking weed and have only smoked a cigarette once, and it did nothing and was pointless.
Title: Re: Tobacco thread
Post by: amok on 28 Dec 2007, 06:16
Actually they could put 'drinking can cause you to die slowly and painfully over a number of years of a range of exciting heart and liver diseases' on every bottle and I'd probably go at it with roughly the same attitude. You get used to it.

People know what happens to your body when you drink and smoke, so I see it as an apathy due to redundancy. "I know, so I don't care" sort of thing.

On the topic of warning labels, I was always tickled by how over here it's always SMOKING KILLS while when I was in Germany, the labels read Smoking Can Kill (in German obviously, smartasses). I had this funny mental image of 999 out of 1000 packs being perfectly ok for you, but then you get the unlucky pack and drop dead. Hey pal, we warned you, those things can kill.

My roommate stole my mini-hookah when he moved out, but we used to go through a nice variety of flavoured shisha from the head shop across the alley way (yes i lived in one of those awesome neighbourhoods.) I used to smoke a pack and a half to two packs a day, but after moving back home for a few months i've cut down to half a pack a day, which is somewhere i haven't been down to in probably 2-3 years. i generally smoke canadian classics, because they're a happy medium of strongish and cheapish and readily available. if i venture into american brands, of the ones I can even find here, I usually pick up camel lights, or dunhill reserves, though ultimately theyre just way too expensive and harsh to smoke as constantly as i am accustomed to smoking.

I tried a cigar once.  It made my mouth and throat feel like they were coated in rubbery ash.

Trick: swish with water and spit, and try not to swallow at all when you're smoking. If you feel the urge to swallow, do a water swish instead. Helps get that shit out of your mouth and possibly cuts down on cancer risk (I am by no means a credible source of information on this, though, so take that medical theory with a grain of salt).

Actually I think the most recent high-profile study on marijuana use suggested that smoking weed might even mitigate the cancer risk of tobacco, and at the very least doesn't make it any worse, so the I-smoked-weed-first/like-it-more people here are probably the best off.  It might just be some weird manipulation of the statistics that led to that conclusion, but who knows?

I think they ended up figuring that since there are known carcinogens in weed smoke, but even regular heavy smokers (22,000+ lifetime joints, which is an absolute fuckton of smoking if you think about it) show no increased risk for lung cancer overall, there must be something about weed that mitigates cancer risk.  If I remember correctly the hypothesis was that the THC was killing the older or malfunctioning lung cells before they could become cancerous.

Come to think of it, Google showed me a link ... http://www.canorml.org/healthfacts/tashkinlungcancer.html has the full scoop.  So yeah ... not all smoking gives you cancer.

I must admit to being a pretty consistent stoner, though, and the fact is that I have a little bit of a smoker's cough.  You're not inhaling rainbows or anything.

I was listening to NPR and they had a show about smoking.  They talked to a woman who chained herself to her radiator for a week so that she could quit.  Her husband knew the combination on the lock, but wasn't allowed to tell her.  She could move around the house freely, but she couldn't go far enough to buy smokes.  She wrote a book about it, apparently.

Tried cigarettes.  They don't feel right.

I've been smoking pipe tobacco for years now, and for some reason, Virginia Tarra just makes expensive dinners taste better.

That, and if I ever get that prolonged burning sensation on my tongue or cheeks, sipping and spitting Cola or water usually makes it feel better.

I tried cigarettes this summer. None too tasty, I don't know why anybody ever thought it'd be a good idea to inhale the smoke.

My good friend's got a buttload of Peterson cigars that are, as far as I know, currently out of production. They really never were anything but budget cigars anyway, but jeez, what impressive budget cigars. Not rolled too tight to have a difficult draw, but you can still keep them lit plenty well. Flavor ain't so bad, either. Nice and earthy (not that I've ever tasted dirt, meningitis = DO NOT WANT, but you know what I mean).

Ha. Well, if you enjoy your first cigarette, there's something wrong with you.

Strangely enough I've never felt the need to smoke something. It's always like, Hmm, maybe I'll smoke a large amount of whatever today. I know I'm not addicted because I go for days at a time when I don't really smoke anything, and if I get headaches or pains or feel sick or whatever itsthe signs are for withdrawal then I guess I must be passing it of as something else or its just not that strong on me. Or maybe I'm not prone to addiction as much as some other people, who knows.

That chaining to the radiator story sounds a helluvalot like Black Snake Moan to me.

I think she did it before that movie.  Maybe her book was the inspiration.  Replace mostly well adjusted woman with sex-crazed drug addict, and swap husband for Samuel L. Jackson, and bam, instant movie script.
