Title: New Year's Resolutions 2008 Edition
Post by: Boro_Bandito on 27 Dec 2007, 21:46
I'm thinking that resurrecting the old is fine for seeing how people did on last year's resolutions, but adding to it this year's would just be confusing, so here's a new thread instead!

This year I plan on:
-Getting better grades than four B's and one A, and getting my GPA up and over a 3.0 in College. Both semesters, hopefully it won't take both.
-Finally getting the gym membership and going to work out with my friend, not to lose weight but just to be more active.
-Learn the Rudiments of Boxing (from same friend)
-Learn how to snowboard from another friend.
-Get a job and stick with it for a while
-Save up enough to go to Toronto

+*Bonus Round*+ Ask a girl out, whether she turns me down or not, need to get over this fear.

All in all more than enough for me to work through, but I think doable, I'll say I succeeded if I get at least 3/6.

3. More parties like the one I am about to go to in three days. Fuck yeah.

i might lower my standards a bit and actually set resolutions that are both reasonable and feasible.

- i am going to learn how to cook without giving myself food poisoning
- i am going to maintain my good grades
- i am going to be an honest and trustworthy friend
- i am going to continue to not be morbidly obese

in addition, one of my biggest peeves as of late which shouldn't really bother me but does is that while there are a lot of things that i am good at (music, writing, painting, knitting, spatial tasks, being hilarious), i do not really excel at any of these. i'm just in the "pretty okay" zone. i think i might pick something and work really hard at it over the coming year so that come 2009, i can actually perhaps think of myself as remotely talented in that area and not just decent enough to get by. this might have to be my art because knitting as of late confuses the fuck out of me and while i really love learning guitar i would be lying to myself if i thought i was any good at it. so i guess really what i am going to do this year is do everything the exact same as i did in 2007 but with more drawing and painting. awesome.

-talk to cute library girl
-spend less money

-try and improve drawing
-practice my bass more (it looks so sad just sitting there)
-make new friends so I am not sitting alone when my friends go off to college

I RESOLVE:
- Not to fail out of college
- Not to be retarded
- To continue to give orgasms as well as I get them if not better

Yeah, that sounds about right.
Man, it's like you made these resolutions for me, and then I kept them without even knowing it.

Also, for this year:
-Make some good fucking photographs.
-Do not be heck of depressed so much.
-Lose a bit of weight maybe.
-Stop using 4chan Digg.
-And maybe don't say candlejack so much, it's stu-

Hrm. Mine are pretty simple, really...

- Not be late for work, and arrive early enough to park in the far away parking lot (thus saving $2 a day!)
- On that note, bring a lunch and thermos of coffee to work with me so I don't need to buy it every day.
- Open my mail the day it shows up in my mailbox... seriously, I've been known to leave bank statements unopened for years on end.
- Sell off about half of my action figure collection.
- No Facebook or LiveJournal after 12:30AM... this one will be tough to stick to.
- Actually ask girls out on dates... and try not to fall in love with girls who already have boyfriends.
- Update my comic on at least a weekly schedule.

...that's all I can think of right now.

edit - added: Cut out World of fucking Warcraft. It's ruining my life (But god DAMN do I want a level 70 warrior). I will resolve this by restraining my account so I can't afford the next expansion pack. Hopelessly addicted to it as I am, I am determined to stop playing, and hopefully start doing something I'll actually have a use for later on.

That was last year's resolution, stop playing WoW, the game that ruled my life for two years. Haven't so much as looked at the website the entire year.

Hmmm, well, i guess for me it would have to be:

- Finish my degree. It should be doable! 5,5 years for a thing that is doable in 4 years. It is enough
- Travel places and meet people (anyone want to do an interrail thinger?)
- Move to an apartment thinger of my own, im getting tired of the studenthouses.

And on the would-like-to-but-knowing-self-unlikely side,

- find cute girl who also likes me

-stop thinking obsessively about situations i cannot control
-be more social

i don't know why i even make these, i always forget about them.

- Save money for funding said trip, which will most likely be to America.
- Pay off my $2300 worth of iMac debt.
- Pay off some more of my car.
- Get through my first year of uni and have a lot of fun while doing it.

I like your style.

I figure if I make resolutions to drastically change anything I'll just fail and be sad about it so in 2008, I hereby resolve to flirt with bankruptcy by continuing to go to as many shows as possible, continue drinking, continue smoking, and take lots more drugs. Fingers crossed.

-Finish my tattoos on my back.
-Have a hell of a lot more sex.

1. Get good marks at uni so I can get into the Postgrad. course I need so that I can get into the Master's Program.

2. Lose some weight, or rather, lose the fattiness around my middle, because I also plan to build some muscle mass so I can be even more intimidating (to those who don't know that I am basically a soft teddy bear)

3. Continue in my quest to own more things.

Resolution ONE: talk less shit
-Method: keep my mouth shut when I am in a crap talking mood. Avoid talking crap to strangers.
-Motivation: Won't make a fool of myself, better person to be around.
-Success potential: I'm obviously not going to make a full 180 turn. But hopefully I'll eventually train myself to hold my tongue when I have nothing to say.

Resolution TWO: eat less crap.
-Method: Try to get meals in regularly, avoid places I can get bad junk food. Substitute foods.
-Motivation: Makes me feel icky, gives me zits.
-Sucess potential: Well I'm still going to eat crap, but I hope I can get more crappy foods out of my regular diet. That is, I will still eat junk, but maybe not splurge as much.

Well, if I have sex while playing World of Warcraft.. I could burn calories that way and be doing something other than drinking too much Mountain Dew while vegetating in front of the computer..

Or I could use sex as an exercise tool to be more active, lose the 20 pounds early on and then have loads more time to get my hunter levelled.  Having one level 70 just isn't enough. :P

(Edits to add: I have a level 70 undead warrior, Arms spec fully decked in Kara lewtz.  My hunter's pet of choice is the white gorilla. Yay thunderstomp!))

Post by: thehollow on 28 Dec 2007, 08:38
it's not even that tough to get a hunter to 70, just get a pig, spec BM, and you're pretty much already there. I remember when BC came out I had to purposely keep myself from leveling too fast so I could still run stuff with my guild, and even then I hit 70 in like a few days.

I've been clean from WoW for about 8 months now, so I guess for this year, one of my resolutions should be "don't have a relapse."

other resolutions:

finish my last semester of school and graduate on time in may
attempt to figure out what the hell I'm going to do after I graduate
get in better shape and exercise more
have some sex

I don't really do resolutions any more. I say I do but then i don't bother actually doing them, so instead I've got a list of things that I want to do, but I won't be too heartbroken if I don't, and a list of things that i have to do, just to remind me to do them. They're mental lists so I'll probably forget anyway, but there's one thing that I want to get done and that's to get my Shaman to 70, purely because I have nothing else going on at the moment and I want to take advantage of my days and days of doing nothing.

Ooh, and I want to record some more demos too. That's a great way to use my time.

I had a bunch of resolutions last year, I think because the year previous had been ubershitty, but this year was ballin', so I really haven't thought about things to change...

I guess getting a boyfriend would be a nice resolution, though I've been wanting that one for about 3 years now, go figure.
And finally learning how to knit/crochet would be nice too.
Get the RA job at school, and get into the Education program.
Actually SAVE some of my money from Ren Faire this summer.  (And not spend it on a $325 corset...)

Can getting a boyfriend really be a resolution?  It doesn't sound right.  Maybe going out to meet more people or something, but the way you put it sounds more like you want to go out and purchase one.

I guess I should try to floss more often.

right! i need to add that one to my list too. my teeth have always been shitty but lately i'm starting to drift into the "receding gums" zone. it's freaking me out!
also, i agree with pen - the whole get a girlfriend/boyfriend resolutions don't make a whole lot of sense to me. that's not to say finding someone in the new year and making them a part of your life should be something to avoid, but actively seeking them out in order to fill a void sort of defeats the purpose of a meaningful relationship. it's okay to be single! embrace it! there is nothing wrong with you! don't compromise yourself for a relationship simply for the sake of being in a relationship! that is actually kind of unhealthy to be honest! i think so anyway!

Well, its not something to list for resolutions, as its always a bit tricky/fickle/not something you own (well, i guess unless you are into the whole slave/dom scene), its more a case of stumbling across interesting enough people.

I am not going to succumb to my escalating problem with alcohol abuse, I will get promoted in my job, and pass all my uni subjects. Notice how I don't say I'm going to "resolve" to do anything, because thats just silly.

Also this;

1. More sex.
2. More liquor.
3. More parties like the one I am about to go to in three days. Fuck yeah.

Is something I feel I can get behind and I will attempt to integrate this without contradiction into my primary goals.

My resolutions this year are not especially groundbreaking. I want to actually keep my grades up. And paint more. and write more. Like Tania said, these are the sort of things that I am "just okay" at. They're both incredibly entertaining for me, I just... don't really keep a practice of either. My biggest desire for the new year is to actually get the noise project back together (the first member moved to North Carolina and the other dropped out of High School and went off somewhere so we don't ever see each other) and play a couple of shows. And pick a name, maybe. That is usually pretty helpful.

I wouldn't call these resolutions so much as just shit I really need/want to do.
-Take some fucking risks because I have been way too safe and practical in my decisions so far.  Transferring to art school or studying abroad are high on the list.
-Generally be more dedicated to art.
-Have more adventures.  These will probably involve more risks.
-Run a half marathon in late April without hurting myself.
-Keep in shape to run a full marathon sometime this fall, again without hurting myself.
-Avoid spiraling into alcoholism following my 21st birthday.  Mostly because it would be expensive.
-NO MOAR DRAMAZ.  I hate the dramaz.

From the other thread (with some additions), good idea, making a new one!

Resolutions for this year:

  • Actually try my hardest in school
  • Complete IQP
  • Begin MQP in A term
  • Learn at least 2 programming languages
  • Finally get around to getting drivers' license
  • Take all of my PE requirement
  • Create a free software-oriented section of my site
  • Keep my life organized, from tasks to schedule to money
  • Finish my paragon of all paranoid data backup schemes.  Sit in Dr. Evil Chair. Cackle.
  • Try to do interesting things instead of posting on forums all day.
  • Exercise regularly throughout the year
  • Eat better
  • Read books about leadership and people management
  • Read more books in general
  • Stick this list somewhere in my work area as a reminder
  • Enjoy life!

I don't really do new year's resolutions as such, but these are things I have resolved to do in the coming year. So I suppose I do do new year's resolutions. Huh.

- Get the silly fast band going again, play more gigs, incite more ridiculous mosh
- Find a house to live in where I can throw parties and have gigs
- Make some more serious music (either alone or with others) instead of just the daft fast stuff
- More gigs, more tours, more records
- Stick uni out and do alright
- Take more exercise
- Increased levels of smooching
- Watch more anime
- Quit smoking again
- More adventures, but with less nearly going splat whilst on them

The smell of stale smoke on your clothes is a vile one. I know this might not seem like a big deal, but just remind yourself when you want to smoke that it will make you have an unattractive odour. Surprisingly off-putting I always find.

this is probably the most common warning label on nearly every pack of cigarettes i buy. health canada has about six they like to shuffle around. a lot of them are really gruesome (http://www.cdc.gov/PCD/issues/2007/apr/images/06_0024.jpg)!
specifically, the one they use for impotence is this warning + image:

Likely:

- Practice bass and become half decent
- Join a band (drumming or bassing) and play at least one gig (this was last year's broken resolution)
- Succesfully flirt with someone
- Moar tattoos

Slightly less likely:

- Be in a good, healthy relationship for more than 3 months
- Save money for something big
- Move out of home

Pie in the Sky

- Move to Brisbane

Likely:

Played in 2 bands, flirted a fair bit, got two tattoos, booked in for another.

I guess I could actually throw a regular-type resolution in here. It's starting to really bug me that all the pictures I ever take that are not on the timer function (and many that are) suck. New Years Goals 2008

1.)  Become financially stable by eradicating all current debt and being choosy about new purchases, keeping a receipt log and monthly expense report, and only eat out on weekends.
2.)  Start a Roth IRA with Mutual investments, preferably while the market is down so I can buy low.
3.)  Eat healthier, and make Michael eat healthier.
4.)  Get and utilize health insurance.
5.)  GRADUATE
6.)  Research job opportunities for people with Neuroscience/Cognitive Science degrees that make at least $75K to start.
7.)  Effectively use the semester off and enjoy not being a student for the first time since I was four.
8.)  Make ABSOLUTELY no babies and maybe get married.
9.)  Take animals to vet when they look sick, instead of using Magic Mommy Dust to cure them.

That's a lot more than I thought previously...

I'm already finished with mine actually:

Yep. All failed epically. Though I guess there's still time for #4 and the first half of #6....

Okay yeah I have just entirely given up on my verses thing. I am, however, in the process of writing an actual song, lyrics and all, all by myself, so we'll see how this turns out. Unfortunately, when I record it, if you listen real careful, it's just a blatant ripoff of "Star Guitar" by Shinichi Osawa put to the vocal melody of "Hearts of Oak" by Ted Leo.

Last year's "record an album" resolution (I hope not to make a habit of doing that) is about 1/3 of the way done. The song I just mentioned is going to be part of it, and I'm scouring iTunes with some friggin' steel wool to find stuff I can rip off without it being too noticeable.

Inspired by Lunchbox's 365 photograph things and my resolution to figure out my camera and learn how to get shots that are not so hell ass-blurry, I am doing a couple of random shots every day. Most are never going to be posted, but so far I think it might be helping a little! I am still only using the timer setting, though, and I do not know how to get across the room (where it should be in focus) in time for the camera to actually focus before the 10-second timer goes off, so most of the ones that have worked are closer shots and shots not of me.

i think i'm going to need to revise my resolutions a bit and add something about trying to find a job or volunteer position that actually has something even remotely to do with the sort of work i want to do after i graduate. nearly every masters program i want to apply for after school requires millions of years of relevant work experience and those jobs subsequently require millions of years of volunteer experience. i have nothing on my resume whatsoever except a couple of years of picking up boxes and putting them down somewhere else, hosting a shitty radio show once a week that doesn't pay me anything and pissing off other graduates by calling them and asking for money. i am graduating in just over a year and it is freaking me out. waaaaahhh.

I'm failing hard on all of my resolutions already.

It shouldn't be so hard to do things that you want to do.

6.)  Research job opportunities for people with Neuroscience/Cognitive Science degrees that make at least $75K to start.
I hope the degree you are referring to is a Phd.

I know! You should see the size of my Pictures folder. You would not believe how many I do not even bother to upload to my gigantic photobuckets.

Considering your resolutions were both incredibly low difficulty/standard, no.

Get Shane laid and continue being as awesome as I already am? Now THAT is hard work.

Joe's just mad 'cause his resolution to stop snorting cocaine from Kate Moss's asscrack didn't pan out like he'd hoped. Hey at least you're down to 1kg a day now!

Now here's a quandary. While I wouldn't want to actually do that, I would be pretty jazzed about the opportunity presenting itself.

You could just pretend you were snorting the cocaine.

Talk about an awkward situation:
"What the... There's still cocaine in my ass?! You fucker, you were just pretending!"

I know this is just pure speculation, having neither snorted cocaine nor done so from anybody's asscrack (or had it snorted from my own, for that matter), but I am pretty sure you'd be able to tell the difference between somebody actually doing it and somebody faking it.

It would be absolutely amazing if somebody on here had experience on the subject.

There's someone who has snorted cocaine from Kate Moss' asscrack on here? Wow. Similarly, wow if someone has done so from some other random person's bottombits.

Hmm well I'm going to the gym 2-3 times a week so I'm pretty happy about that. I did break the whole not staying up late resolution... and the procrastinating one... as I pulled an all-nighter to finish my chem lab. I also drank coffee... but I had a good twenty-three days before I gave in, I consider it an accomplishment.

I have seen a trend in people revisiting their resolutions.  I have done the same and it is a bit depressing.

-Have had a couple of adventures.  Hope to have more when it is not motherfucking cold.
-Actually taking a studio art class this semester.  This is a step in the right direction.
-The running's not going so well.  It's too cold and I'm too busy.  Have adjusted my goal to hit the campus gym 3 times a week after work, and start the running business again once I have daylight hours free.
-Not 21 yet.  Only drunk once a week or so thus far.
-Drama still won't leave me alone.  Thinking about changing phone number.
