Title: Famous people
Post by: Dissy on 02 Jan 2008, 13:54
A copule people mentioned meeting, or seeing, several famous people.  So whynot have a thread about all the famous people you've met or know.

Ready?  GO!

What? Me first? Fine.

I use to live in Chicago, born there actually, and my dad use to play basketball with some members of the Chicago Bears.  My dad became fast friends with the late, great Walter "Sweetness" Payton and I met him several times.

Luc (Luke?) Longley was also in my mum's economics class in college.  He use to drive an old Honda Civic hatchback. In order to fit into the car, he had to remove the driverside seat.

I've seen Ah-nuld a few times, once when he was filming Twins, and several times down in Cabo San Lucas.

I've also met Sammy Hagar and his band down in CSL.  They were some awesome dudes.

as related in a previous post (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,18531.msg581481.html#msg581481), i saw edward norton in a markham grocery store last september but was too terrified to actually say anything to him and hid in the cereal aisle instead.

i also met the coheed guys when i was 16 and somehow thought they were really great but i think maybe that one counts for negative points now.

i met jason mewes when he hosted some kind of battle of the bands thing at my college.

i met vienna teng (does anybody even know who she is?) and skybox at concerts they gave at notre dame.

and i met jason mraz and talib kweli after a concert that notre dame has every year to deter students from going to the rally in the alley party the first weekend of school. i gave them directions to the rally, which was postponed until after the concert ended.

yaaaaay.

When I was in NYC for choir we went to the Early Show. David Krumholtz (Numbers, Serenity, etc) was on and I got his autograph and a picture with him. He was ridiculously nice to all of the people in to audience and was chatting with everyone.

Also on that trip we had a choir workshop with some Broadway performers. One was playing Raoul in Phantom of the opera at the time, the other was in Rent. They were both really nice and were cracking lots of jokes. I got a picture with them also.

As for musicians, I met all the members of The Spill Canvas after a concert of theirs and got all of their autographs on a poster, which is hanging above my computer. In a similar fashion I met the guys from Minus the Bear while heading to their show. I was going to get in line, they were going to Subway to get some food.

I talked to Ted Leo himself before they started their set, and also Ben Bridwell from Band of Horses on a differ occasion. This is why I get to the shows early so I can stand front and center.

And lastly, I shared a couch with Phil Elv(e)rum (The Microphones/Mt. Eerie) and had a nice chat with him throughout a concert before he went up on stage.

I used to work at the Uni bar, so I have served a whole bunch of Australian bands hot chips during their sound checks. I waitressed at Jennifer Hawkins' (in her Miss Universe year) brother's wedding and accidentally stuck my butt in her face while I was offering canapes to someone on the next table.
Also the bastard Bank Manager from the Greater Building Society ads used to be a regular when I worked at an Italian cafe, and every time he spoke to me I wanted to punch him.

I met Ricky from Kaiser Chiefs (and saw the other guys, but they were busy carrying stuff, Ricky was just roaming around) at an airport before a festival a couple of years ago. He had the softest hands I've ever felt on a man, and I guess he was a nice guy - dunno, didn't talk too much.

Other than that, just a few minor Norwegian celebrities, none you'd have heard of. A couple of Norwegian football players (John Arne Riise, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Thomas Myhre, Steffen Iversen ++) as well, but more like "Hey, could I get an autograph?" than actually meeting them.

I met Bob Saget in California two years ago, and I saw Johnny Depp at the Premiere of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. I didnt actually speak to him though.

Also,I dont know if this counts as "Meeting" but the lead singer of Boys like girls said he loved me [He mouthed "I lvoe you too" In the middle of playing the Great escape at Warped tour].My friend and I were making the "♥" symbol with our hands and pointing at him,and he apparently saw me and noticed. My friend pretty much went catatonic for a few seconds and then snapped out of it and we started screaming bloody murder, and the girls in front of us turned back and looked like they wanted to murder us. After they finished we snuck around back [You were only supposed to get in if you had a wrist band] and we yelled his name and he smiled and waved at us, but then security came so we bolted. It was a fun day.

I met Dicky Barret (The Might Mighty Bosstones) when I was 10. It seemed cool back in the day. And I saw Russel Crowe at the zoo. I would have gone and said hi but he was with his hot wife and inexplicably hideous child so I thought he might beat me to death with a household item (this was soon after the phone incident).

I have also been quite close to a couple of the major Democratic U.S. presidential candidates.  I worked for a non-profit that thought it would be worthwhile to wave signs and generally annoy them.

A few years ago I had a conversation about playing bass with Richard Davis.  Kudos if you know who Richard Davis is.

At warped tour 2003 I was running to get to the mosh pit when I slammed into this guy with huge green mohawk and thought nothing of it untill a few sets later when I saw Rancid on stage. Turns out the guy i ran into was Tim.

I live near Vancouver and was at a battle of the bands for a local radio station at the the Roxy, one of the judges was Chad Krouger( Nickleback) who happened to be absolutly shitfaced. I was up at the bar and about to order my drink when chad was apparently getting people to back out so they could kick some guy out. As he is walk ing by a turn around to see wft is going on and he was right behind me and ended up with both my tits in his hands. At the time I was 5'3" with a 6g septum ring, and the look that I gave him was enough for him to jump back and yell OMG I am so sorry, and then run away. I scared a "rockstar".

I saw Khofi Annan when i was in London a couple years ago, around the time of G8 in 2007.  Then I met Ralph Nader in at Powershift in November.  Bowling for Soup was at my school last semester, i didn't go to the show, but they made a huge scene in the cafeteria belittling the staff.  Finally (I think) the guy from Killswitch Engage used toteach guitar at the local music shop, and he was a guest judge at the talent show at my old high school.

Oh yeah, if Derrick Jackson or Bill Mckibben count (they are big-time journalists) they came to my school too and i had to do Q&A forums with them for class.

Oh and Ben Kweller gave my g/f a hug and me a high 5 at a concert at Pearl Street last spring.

I ended up at a beach party in Hawaii at the same time as Kelly Slater and Gabrielle Reece (the volleyball player). Also, this was the same time Lost was first filming, and I could have sworn I saw Domonic Monaghan, but I can't confirm that.

When I was in Hong Kong, some of my friends met Jackie Chan, but I wasn't there for that, so it probably doesn't count, huh?

Oh, heavens... I used to go to Disneyland a lot, and there were always "famous" people there.

I saw Nicholas Cage and his daughter getting on California Screamin. I met John Ritter about a week before his death at California Adventure, the entire cast of "Just Shoot Me." I was at my friend's dad's restaurant and sat in the booth over from Mel Gibson... at a drama festival, there was some kid from the cast of All That, whom I beat in a cold reading event... *shrugs* I live in Orange County. I forget who all I've seen. I worked in a high-end entertainment store (think those stores that build super rich people those home theatres), and several very big names came in, but I'm literally not allowed to talk about it. Oh, and our beaches always have those surfer kids with way too much money. I know a couple Moto X "stars" (Kyle Loza goes to my church... he's the guy who won best trick at those extreme olympics thingies... I forget what it's called. Meh).

I actually "know" one big "Hollywood" person (he's family), but I feel like a dirty little whore when I name drop like that. Suffice it to say he's on TV every night, and he came to my wedding.

My Dad went to High school with Patrick Swayze, apparently they were decent friends, were in the same drama class one year, and my Dad crashed at his house after a party. I've seen the yearbook. So I believe.

I've shook hands with Paul Simon and Bill Clinton on separate occasions, and said some brief words with them. Paul Simon I saw in Central Park when we first went up there a couple years ago. And I high-fived Wierd Al at the concert I went to for him after the show.

I saw Harrison Ford once, but didn't get very close.

And I was really close friends' with the son of the local Weatherman Ron Roberts back in Lubbock, and ate dinner at their house several different times. But that one isn't as cool as the others.

Edit:
Its Carlos Diaz isn't it? I bet she's talking about Carlos Diaz guys.

On-topic, Canadian readers will appreciate this one. I met Star! TV personality and minor sub-celebrity Sean Gehon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Gehon) at a friend's going-away party prior to Sean's time on MuchMusic. I beat the absolute hell out of him in Scene It! and he was not pleased.

I went to junior high school with Brenden Yurie, lead singer of Panic! at the Disco.  Kid is a major douchebag and makes shitty music, but I knew him.  I also know a lot of people who were friends with Brandon Flowers of The Killers.  Something about being Mormon I guess, you tend to "know" every other famous Mormon person.

I've met and shook hands with Gladys Knight.  My dad's played golf with a number of famous sports celebrities from Las Vegas (Greg and Mike Maddux, and Andre Agassi).

I also have met and shook hands with Nevada Senator John Ensign, attended a church Sunday session in Nevada Senator Harry Reid's ward in Washington D.C., and passed by Hilary Clinton in a tour of the Senate building on a vacation with the folks to the nation's capital a couple years back.

I hung out with Bo Diddley for like half an hour, and I met one of the Drifters in Sea-Tac Int'l Airport. I've met John Penney, who is only truly famous in air racing circles, and Brian Shul, an SR-71 pilot and famed author. I've hung out with Steve Hinton, who has flown just about every airplane stunt you've ever seen in the movies. I talked to Dave Lerner back when he was still playing bass with Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. I met John Mayall and got his autograph, he was a fucking asshole.

Also, you know that guy who did the cover art for The Sims, The Sims 2, and just about all the expansion packs? Yeah I jam with him whenever I'm back in my hometown and I'm best friends with both of his sons. The only guy I've ever paid for guitar lessons? He's played several gigs with his band at the Whiskey A Go-Go. I've jammed with a man who has opened for B.B. King, Santana, Ray Charles, and many others.

tl;dr lots

But yeah, he's pretty damn awesome. More football players/people should be like him.

Hell, I'm a celebrity. WHOOO HOO, everyone line up for my autograph!

I've always wondered what the attraction in asking people for their autograph is. I'm fairly certain it's not worth anything... is it just to prove that you met them?

Post by: Jimmy the Squid on 03 Jan 2008, 16:56
It's worth stuff when they die.

I think it's more a sentimental thing, a tangible piece of evidence that you met someone who, on the basis of how many people have heard of them, is better than you. I kinda understand why celebrities get mad at being asked for autographs but it doesn't mean they are bad people, maybe they were just having a bad day, you know?

I guess that makes sense.

I would think that celebrities don't like signing things sometimes because they might think that you're just going to turn around and sell it on eBay. That would kinda tick me off.

Oh, yeah, it's a pretty cool place. They have dildos and fake tits in their marketing and sales room.

Oh, right, and you wanna start hating me even more? I'm on the intros to 5 of their DVDs, including the 21st anniversary of The Toxic Avenger- I played Toxie, though they redubbed the voice and I was in the costume. I'm also in Class of Nuke'Em High 2, the French release of Evil Clutch, Pot Zombies, and Tromadance Volume 3... or 2... I forget. Ataria Starling, the adult film actress I keep mentioning, is on the cover of it, that's all I remember.

Good times...

I met the former governor of Colorado a few summers ago; he came into the retail store at Coors Field where I was working.  Unfortunately he had secret service guys with him so I just had to smile and shake his hand instead of telling him what I really thought of him.

But my ex-boyfriend went to NYU with Gregory Peck's grandson, and my mom met John Elway a long time ago.  Clearly they are more exciting than I.

The guys from OAR went to high school somewhere near Jeph, and I only live like, twenty minutes from there.  Sadly I haven't met them.

Really depends on what your definition of celebrity is.
Most of the people I know/grew up with/have met are 'celebrities' in the extreme sporting world only. Examples:
-Met the Presidents and/or CEOs of: Adidas, Wipika, Gaastra, Salomon
-Grew up around Corey Roesler, Inventor of Kitesurfing
-Met Robby Naish a few times
-Snowboarded with Mike Jacoby (http://expn.go.com/athletes/bios/JACOBY_MIKE.html)
-Vacationed with both the Gaastra and Wipika Kite teams
Blah blah every pro windsurfer/Kiteboarder ever

"Real celebrities"
-Saw Matthew Perry going into our hotel in Florida

One time I got an email from Rstevens.

I haven't met that many famous people.  I mean, I've met a bunch of webcomic dudes and ladies, but regardless of your opinion of the height of their celebrity it isn't really a mean feat.  You turn up to a con, you say hi.

I met British Sea Power while very drunk.

Preston from the Ordinary Boys, Jo Neary, that bird who plays Maid Marian in the new Robin Hood, they are all regulars at my pub.

I taught English for two weeks to a kid who was in the Ring (1, 2, and 3) and Drillbit Taylor and Texas Chainsaw Massacre and a couple of other things.  He's a pretty cool kid!

I went to middle school with a kid who was in Cheaper by the Dozen, Dragonfly, and Phantom of the Megaplex.  He was not a pretty cool kid.  He was kind of an arrogant asshole.

A friend of mine went to driving school with Haley Joel Osment, who was apparently really sad-looking and sat in the back of the classroom with his bodyguards surrounding him and talked to no one.

Results?  Two-thirds of child stars are unhappy or assholes and the other third are really cool.  Also I don't know enough child stars for these results to be statistically significant.

I annoyed the shit out of Dan from Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs. That tends to happen a lot when you are incredibly drunk, and they are not. At least I got a free shirt though!

Somewhere, the 2002 Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hughes has a picture of us. We talked to her at the Minneapolis airport and she whipped out the camera.

And I met Little Richard once at a hotel. He was terrifying. Calvin Johnson is also terrifying; when he looks at you he has the creepiest stare.

I have met a whole hell of a lot of bass players, which is kind of odd because I only kind of dabble in bass, but I play guitar.
Also odd I think is that of what is about to be a very long list, I don't really know any of these folks.  As in... we're not buddies.  Nobody's given me their cell number, you know? But I've met every one of them.

Bass Players
Doug Wimbish  (http://www.dougwimbish.com/) twice, about 15 years apart.  Once in D.C., once in New York
 Dave Ellefson  (http://www.davidellefson.com/)
 JD DeServio (http://www.johnjddeservio.com/www/index.htm)
 Tony Levin  (http://www.tonylevin.com/)
 Leland Sklar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leland_Sklar)
Rode in an elevator with  Stu Hamm  (http://www.stuarthamm.net/)
 Chuck Rainey  (http://www.chuckrainey.com/)

Other Musicians
I Drove  Tim Alexander  (http://www.timalexander.org/) around D.C. in a lowrider I used to own and eventually dropped him off at his hotel
I've been in the dressing room of the old 930 club with  Sick of it All (http://www.sickofitall.com/index2.php)
Also at the old 930 I talked briefly with  Nivek Ogre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nivek_Ogre)
I've met all the guys in Fugazi, Skeeter from Scream, met the Bad Brains, the Cro-Mags, and lots of other even lesser known bands.
I worked briefly in the early 90s at a club in D.C called  The Bayou (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bayou).  Met a ton of the acts.  Hell, the first night I worked there White Zombie was playing.  Approximately eleven and a half billion shitty college metal bands came through while I was there, as well as Sophie B. Hawkins, Lynch Mob, LSD, and Jackal.

Actors
I spent about five minutes talking with  Stacy Keach  (http://www.stacykeach.com/index.htm) when I was about 17, and when I was ten or eleven I stood in line at the local video store to get  James Doohan  (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001150/) to autograph a comic book.

Favorite 'famous' guy
About a year before he died, I got to meet  MSG Roy Benavidez  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Benavidez).  He was the great uncle of a guy that worked for me at the time and was just soooooo cool.

*whew*  I think that covers it.

Never been a big Everclear fan myself, actually, but my girlfriend at the time was a huge fan, which is really probably the most damning thing about the whole scenario. We were in highschool at the time, so he was basically a gigantic douchebag to a 16 year old girl. I mean, yeah, teenagers are obnoxious at times, but it's not like she was squealing and babbling incoherently or anything. I mean, maybe it's really hard being a celebrity, (after all, I wouldn't know), but I still think you can do better than ogling a fan for 15 seconds and then being really dismissive.

(actually, he looks like a guy around here who hangs out with my housemates. He's a pretty cool guy, so tambourine-guy is nice in my book!)

Actually I was pretty impressed with Jimmy Buffet's version of it.

For the longest time I actually thought he did the original, because it was all I ever heard growing up. It holds a special place in my heart.

I was pretty disappointed when I saw him on the Tiki Time tour. It was... yeah it was shit. Pure shit until the second part. N*Sync's concert 4 years earlier impressed me more and was consistently rad.

Damn your Everclear slandering, I want to talk about how I have talked to, played music with, and had a few drinks with Gary Ablett on several occasions.

I met Josie Long tonight! (Lovely comedian from England.) I went to her show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and then went up to thank her afterwards, and because I was at her show Kindness and Exuberance last year I got a little zine she put together of some of her favourite responses that she got when she asked audience members at that show to write down their favourite small thing.

Then when I got to the tram stop and started reading it, it turned out that the thing that I wrote down was on the first inside page! So I went back to the venue and found her again (like a stalker!) and introduced myself, and we had a nice little chat for a couple of minutes about interconnectedness and astronomy and spirituality sans God. Then I went back to the tram stop.

She's great!

You joke but I use trams from the 1920s on a regular basis. (http://hampage.hu/trams/milano/e_index.html)

Oh and also (to try and link transportation in with the topic of famous people) my dad served the previous pope (rip) on an airplane once. There is a photo of them shaking hands on our mantlepiece, mostly because it always gets everyone laughing.
