Don't hijack this thread guys! It is about chromatophores!

Disney titles to begin:
"Al-had-him"
"Pok-a-her-ass"
"Blow White"
"Sin-derella" (I give this one a 99.9% chance of already existing)
"Sleeping with Beauty"
"Aristo-pussies"
"Beauty and the Beast" already sounds like something you could see in Tijuana.
Uh... I'm gonna stop there 'cause I feel kinda dirty.
-
hey, this thread.
-
Good one, Meg.
Also, don't use ones that already exist, Paco.
-
this is not a good thread. weak boarding, guys.
-
I give this one a 99.9% chance of already existing
Situations like this are why the internet exists!
-
Good one, Meg.
Also, don't use ones that already exist, Paco.
Oh, I thought that's what we were doing.
I wound up looking for AvSP for a bit, too >_<.

this thread is now about chromatophores.

Actually this thread seems like a really good place to put a helpful pneumonic device that I up with while studying for my bio test today! Sadly, I didn't get to use it on the actual test. I do seem to have made biology history, though.
It's very simple; when you need to remember the different methods for preservation of variation in the gene pool, just remember, "dick boob nipple penis."
Dick = diploidy
Boob = balanced polymorphism (specifically, heterozygote advantage aka hybrid vigor and frequency-dependent selection)
Nipple = neutral variation
Penis = pleiotropy
If you are ever in a bind, just think! Dick boob nipple penis!
-
I only remember what one of those 4 means. I do not miss studying for tests at all.
-
Man I am a biology major and I do not know what any of those are. What the fuck kind of biology are you taking, Ally?
-
Diploidy: Diploid nature of
two eukaryotes hides recessive alleles, keeping them in the gene pool; if the frequency is rare, there is asmall chance that heterozygotes will mate to produce a recessive homozygote.
Balanced polymorphism: Natural selection maintains stable frequencies of two or more phenotypes.
- Heterozygote advantage: Heterozygotes may have an advantage over homozygous individuals. Carriers of the sickle-cell disease, for example, have a greater resistance to malara.
- Frequency-dependent selection: Advantage of a morph declines when the morph becomes too frequent in the population. Allows for balance between frequencies of more than one morph.
Neutral variation: Some traits may not have affects on reproductive success (some argue that there is no such thing as neutral variation, just effects of genotype are less obvious in certain environments).
Pleiotropy: Genes have more than one phenotypic event. Even if some part of the expression is harmful, if another part if beneficial, the gene can be preserved in the population.
dick boob nipple penis
disclaimer: I do not actually know anything about science
-
Diploidy: Diploid nature of two eukaryoteschromosomes hides recessive alleles blah blah blah
Well young lady, you certainly are lucky that didn't come up on your test.
-
There actually just shouldn't be a "two." ANYWAYS LOOK AT THE DISCLAIMER

I know a little from this because I happen to be a reptile hobbyist who is interested in the breeding of cornsnakes and ball pythons, both of wich have many different genetic color morphs to to cross-breeding. Of course I barely understand it at all and really I just wanted to post some links to cool pictures of snakes:

and who did we say was prettier than who?

Dang it chromatophores, I had some really great ones on account of this one time work was really boring, and me and the other bar staff played "Porno Charades" only it had to be a film, and it had to be a parody porno. Extra points were given for clever made-up ones. And now, you've ruined it, chromatophores! I hope you're happy!
Ah, bugger it, I'll post some of my better efforts anyway.
Shaving Ryan's Privates
Pirates of the Flicking Bean
Rescuers Going Down
Black Cock Down
And 'Free Willy' needed no alteration. We just let it stand, as is.

"Edward Penis-hands"
There actually is such a film (way to be late to the draw) and I have seen it in it's entirety. It is awesome.
-
"Edward Penis-hands"
...i actually own that
-
i take it back, this is a good thread now. let's talk about biology more.
-
I wonder what it is like when Edward's hands are flaccid. I mean, they can't be hard all the time, can they?
-
Every once in a while we will stumble across a "real man", Patrick.
-
Lord of the G-String <------ absoultely terrible by anyones standards
-
Actually that's a movie too, and is fucking hilarious. I've never looked forward to the dialogue in a porn movie, except for when I saw this.

re: chromatophores- I was trying to find a video of those cephalopods that strobe colours over their body, but couldn't find one. :(
This guy is pretty cool though. Octupus with chromatophores (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAGxTsEmGek)

I like going to the Boston Aquarium and watching the cuttlefishes flash their colors in little waves. Also the octopus is pretty awesome, when you can see him.

I took Bio AP. I took the AP test for Biology, and passed it.
I know fuck-all about biology. To be fair, high school is long over for me, but still.

Ally, I hate to say it but that's my exact thought as soon as I saw that picture. I'm thinking I may be using my spare tank to house some chameleons now rather than buying a cornsnake, but they have to be of a tiny species.
-
what's a chromatophore? man, I'm glad I chose a bullshit major and don't have to learn science ever. Studying spanish is way easier.
-
Guess.
(what do all the animals have in common?)

Obviously chromatophore means freaking awesome, because cephalpods are freaking awesome.

Its amazing what you can do with the power of Genetics. My personal favorites are ones like the Luecisistic and the Piebald, which the first having no working chromatophores at all and the second them only working in patches, making the coolest effect ever.
-
I don't understand one goddamn word in that graphic that Yelley posted, but fluorescent colors on animals are AWESOME
Also I am pretty sure they made yeast cells live for like 10x their normal life span. That seems pretty excellent, genetic manipulation is badass
-
EDIT: Haha, I didn't even see that there was a second page, I thought I was clarifying something that people already knew. KAY COOL
-
Correctamundo!
A word I've never used before, and hopefully never will again.
-
It was good enough for Samuel L Jackson.
Also, mixing that bluish-red tiny frog and a chameleon would be sick.
Edit: Bad habit. Habits die hard. Die Hard was pretty good.
-
now what have we been taught about quoting the person above us Paco? And also, I guess conceivably if you put enough fo those frog things in the background a chameleon would be able to copy some of the colors to an extent...
Edit: Damn right it was a good movie.

I just like how the coolest-looking stuff in nature is colored that way to say "IF YOU EAT ME YOU WILL DIE, I AM NOT KIDDING MOTHERFUCKER."
-
Or I'm thinking it went the way of, "ha, since I'm poison to those fuckers there's no reason to blend in, so I'm going to flaunt my shit suckas!"
-
(http://www.astrographics.com/GalleryPrints/Display/GP2028.jpg)
-
I came to this thread hoping to learn something.
I infact learnt many things. The first was what a Chromatophore is, and what it isn't. It's definately not some form of tomato. Secondly, that these animals are pretty awesome. And finally, I am still very scared of cephalopods.

-
Or I'm thinking it went the way of, "ha, since I'm poison to those fuckers there's no reason to blend in, so I'm going to flaunt my shit suckas!"
That said, I am going to paint myself in fluorescent colours just to get laid. FLAWLESS PLAN AMIRITE?
I bet it works for the Blue Man Group.
-
Well... either your bright colours will entice females to your superior genetic material, or they'll steer clear 'cause you look poisonous.
Could go either way, really.
Some kind of complex, mate-enticing dance might tip the balance.

Actually that's a movie too, and is fucking hilarious. I've never looked forward to the dialogue in a porn movie, except for when I saw this.
I saw it on Cinemax once, or at least the first part of it. I think that the studio that made it may have been in charge of the Planet of the Apes porno as well. Didn't catch it's title. (Also, scrambled porn is epic. THIS IS A FACT.)

Species: M. horridus
lol, horridus.
-
I always thought "(t)horny devil" was a pretty amusing name, personally. Poor thorny devils. They're not horrible at all! Well, unless you're an ant . . .
. . . Sternus vulgaris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Starling), on the other hand, now there's a well-named species.
-
Before I clicked the link I thought you had just found my mother on the internet.
-
i will be friends with every one of these animals
-
Oh, you mean horny toads/horned lizards? (yes, that's what we called them) The little endangered species that can shoot blood out of its eyeballs and eats ants? Back where I grew up you weren't allowed to touch them, not because they were dangerous but because they were threatened. Growing up I remember being able to find them anywhere as a little kid but their being less and less as I grew older. Kinda sad, loved watching them eat those gigantic red ants (not fire ants, some other species). We bought a Rocky Mountain Horned lizard from the pet store once (a non-endangered species, captive-bred), but it died because the guys at the pet store had no idea what they were talking about when they said to feed him crickets, there's a type of acid that they get from ants that's necessary for their diet. Blah.
Anyway, back on topic slightly I still say that those chameleons are the coolest things ever, and I think it would be a worthy investment to buy one. Which I now intend to do some day alongside the Green Tree Python that I'm going to buy. Seriously the one named Slash has the most awesome color combo I've ever seen.
Edit: Nevermind
"The thorny devil is only distantly related to the morphologically similar North American horned lizards of the genus Phrynosoma, and is more an example of convergent evolution."
-
those gigantic red ants (not fire ants, some other species)
You mean cow ants? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cow_Ant)
-
not at all, these were really ants, big red and shiny.
-
I fuckin' love chameleons.
That one episode of the Crocodile Hunter where he's in Malaysia and just getting CONTSTANTLY MAULED BY ANGRY CHAMELEONS is probably my favorite of all time.

-
That is pretty gross, like a huge pus-filled blister.
-
Isn't it filled with honey?
I think they steal it from bees...
-
those are honey-pot ants, they make their own, and members of the colony act as living storage units for food for the others, usually by hanging from the ceilings of their tunnels. The other ants can then come up and take honey from their butts at their leasure.
-
Isn't it filled with honey?
Is that supposed to make it less gross?
-
They sound like the best ants in the world. Why can't we have people that hang from the ceiling and create honey for us? Oh cruel world
-
Yeah, and then we suck it out their anus.
Sounds awesome.
-
I secretly starred in 2girls1cup
-
Damn it Patrick, you weren't supposed to tell anyone about that.
-
Aww man, you see? That's why you should never hold it if you've gotta answer the call to nature. It's like, first you have a Big Gulp, then you find that there's construction in the toilet, then your butt swells up as an emergency bladder, and next thing you know, people are sucking honey outta your ass.
-
Holy shit, I'm watching a Good Eats episode right now talking about chromatophores on squids. Alton Brown refers to using them for attracting a mate as "squid bling."
-
God I want to have sex with Alton Brown. Difficulty: I am a straight dude, so 8/10

Oh, what's new in the world of colorful creatures? A new page? Golly gee, I can't wait to see more cute animals!
