Title: Bacon $food
Post by: gmalivuk on 28 Jan 2008, 14:32
Comic 1055 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1055)'s specials made me think that bacon muffins would probably be worth attempting to make.  I have previously put bacon in a mole sauce and eaten it with rice (http://forums.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=10483).  (Note that that's the Spanish word mole, which bears no relationship to the animal known in English by a name spelled the same way.)

Well, last week, there was another Adventure in Mixing Bacon with Other Yummy Things.  This time, the chocolate chip cookies described here (http://forums.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php?p=455468#p455468).  The lovely PictureSarah (of the xkcd fora, on which I'm more active than here) made a batch for me, in return for some help I gave her when she was preparing for exams last semester.

First, the dough:
It didn't hold together very well, probably owing to all the chunks of stuff in it.  But it was really damn tasty on its own, as all decent cookie dough ought to be.

Then, the balls:
PictureSarah presenting one batch of pre-cookies, about to be put into the oven.  They were, in a way, genuine chocolate salty balls.

Later, the cookies:
Freshly out of the oven.  I of course had to have one immediately, as I always do with chocolate chip cookies, even though it was very burny on my hands and in my mouth.  It was also really, really delicious (though perhaps too heart-attacky to have as many as I would have normal chocolate chip cookies).

Finally, the enjoyment thereof:
I don't know about the latte special in the comic, but I can assure you that cookies are always vegetarian (though not necessarily vegan).  So don't let a little thing like "bacon is the cured belly of a swine carcass (http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Help/glossary-B/index.asp)" dissuade you from trying these cookies yourself.

Has anyone else put bacon in unusual dishes, or made other strange-sounding mixes of food items that might *seem*, at first, not to go together at all?

My god, that looks absolutely delicious! I love bacon with a passion. I could eat it with just about anything..so long as it's the greasy, chewy kind. Not the hard, crunchy kind.

I quite enjoy your XKCD food fora. I periodically spend time there, until I make an ass of myself and stop going.

I have recently bought like a pound of bacon (delicious stuff on sale at the farmer's market), and will experiment away with comparable creations soon.

Then again I have put pickles and jelly on the same sandwich, so I guess it's not all that odd.

I've managed that, but not in a big way. Chocolate works well in a chilli and so does garlic so the two in the same chilli was fine, but neither was the main flavour of the meal.

Post by: Slick on 28 Jan 2008, 17:17
You fry bacon, reserve the grease, then fry garlic in it to steal the garlic flavour then remove the garlic chunks. Then just replace each square of bakers chocolate with one tablespoon oil and three tablespoons cocoa powder in your favorite brownie recipe.
Instant gold!

Title: Re: Bacon $food

Does bacon taste the way it smells?

Infinitely better. Which is saying a lot, because bacon smells something wonderful.

I'm still advocating these things. I've got to try it for myself sometime. The best part is failing utterly when trying to cook something totally awesome. For example, I tried to make pumpkin pie from scratch--that is, from an actual pumpkin. It wound up tasting like squash-flavored oatmeal with crust. But it was fun to make it.
Title: Re: Bacon $food
Post by: Slick on 28 Jan 2008, 18:24
Sounds like your squash wasn't cooked through. The best way to do such is to bake/roast it, making sure it's fully done. Cut it in half, put it in the oven, and bake away. A fork/knife should be able to easily pass the whole way through it when it's done, and peeling it should be a trivial task (once it's cooled). Erring on the side of over-done isn't usually a problem, because it'll just caramelize a little more, but make sure not to use any clearly burnt parts of the pumpkin (if it's too close to the heat or the peel is burnt.
Then, you know, add some egg, sugar, spice, garlic, bacon bits, and cocoa powder.

Also, if you have too much pumpkin stuffing, mix together some flour and baking powder, then add that to the pumpkin until you get a nice cake batter consistency, then bake it at a cake temperature for a while, until tothpick-tested as done.

I have previously put bacon in a mole sauce and eaten it with rice (http://forums.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=10483).

Mole is quite possibly the most interesting and delicious thing I have ever tasted of the Mexican variety.
A genius must have invented this.
Seriously, who would have thought "Hey, maybe if stick some chile peppers and a bunch of other weird stuff into some delicious chocolate it'll create something that won't taste like absolute shit."

frankly, the idea of bacon cookies makes my stomach turn...
but that's just the bacon. It makes me nauseous. And to ruin such otherwise delicious-looking cookies like that. It's a travesty.

But vanilla pudding mix is really good in cookies. That, plus walnuts, lots of chocolate, and coconut equals pure deliciousness.

Seriously, who would have thought "Hey, maybe if stick some chile peppers and a bunch of other weird stuff into some delicious chocolate it'll create something that won't taste like absolute shit."
Actually, it was the radical idea of putting sugar (and, later, even milk) in chocolate that was a new thing.  It was originally only made as a drink or a sauce, usually with chile, sometimes also a bit of vanilla.

I think my favorite part of this thread is the bizarre extraneous dollar sign in the title. I like the concept of something costing food dollars.
That was actually meant in the computer programming sense (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollar_sign#Use_in_computer_programming), where it basically would stand in for whatever other kind of food.  To be perfectly honest, though, I only know that myself because of the higher proportion of computer nerds on the xkcd fora than on here, and also thought it was weird the first time I saw it.

Does bacon taste the way it smells? Because that sounds like it would be HORRID with chocolate...

For a very long and unfortunate period of my life I did not eat bacon, because it looked and smelled disgusting, so I imagined it couldn't possibly taste good.  Then I tried it for the first time, realized how RIDICULOUSLY DELICIOUS it is, and now it smells great to me because the smell = I GET TO EAT BACON.

Bacon + chocolate is something I've never had, but it sounds viable, I'll have to try to mimic those cookies some time.  Bacon + maple syrup is a pig/sugar combination that I already know works great (not that this one is as unusual), and I have multiple recipes based around the concept.  Since I don't have any bacon in the house right now, though (sad day), I'm going to go experiment with the chocolate + garlic combination instead.  I'll be back to post results soon.

Edit: HOLY MOTHER OF OM NOM NOM!  Slick, for this suggestion you are officially a God among men.

Garlic Chocolate Sauce:
In a small saucepan over low heat, melt together:
4 tablespoons of heavy cream
1 tablespoon of butter
1 one-ounce square of unsweetened Baker's chocolate
3 tablespoons of powdered sugar
2 cloves of garlic, pressed

Pour over vanilla ice cream, devour, and die happy.  This is all I had the energy/ingredients for at this time, I will be exploring other more complex chocolate + garlic combinations in the near future.

Every time we talk about biscuits, this raisin argument always comes up. Let's just say that some people like raisins, and some people don't, and people in one group think that the others are fools for liking/not liking raisins. We don't have to agree, let's just pretend to respect one another's positions.

Raisins are still manky.

Also...I'm definitely making those gummi bears and either putting them on an ice cream sundae or going to a movie matinee of something like the water horse, I can't decide which at the moment.

Things peanut butter goes with:
jelly/jam, preferably strawberry
nutella
marshmallows/fluff
chocolate
fruit, especially apples and bananas
celery and raisins (ants on a log!)
crackers and various bread types
ice cream and milkshakes
and, according to Misconception, pickles, but I severely doubt this combination
