Title: Godspeed - Officially 86ed
Post by: Adnrew on 09 Feb 2008, 22:14
http://www.nme.com/news/godspeed-you-black-emperor/34219 (http://www.nme.com/news/godspeed-you-black-emperor/34219)

Quote
He continued: "We could talk to people after the shows, or we could make announcements from the stage, but so much what Godspeed was, was one-way communication, and I had an existential freakout about that, that those tactics aren't valid anymore.

"People didn't need a rock band pointing in the direction of (how the world was at that point). Maybe what they needed is some clumsy words, a presentation that was a little more human."

But Menuck hinted that personal issues between the members also played a part in the decision to split: "On a personal level I now find (Godspeed) to be inappropriate. There's a complicated back story. I reached a point whereby I was no longer willing to contribute to the steering of the ship; it was like, 'Okay now, someone else point the direction, I love you all, but I need to ride shotgun for a while'. I think that bands do have a short shelf life."

True. There was a tiny bit of hope, though.

I thought they were already dead and gone anyway.

Plus, I actually think A Silver Mount Zion is leagues better than most of the GYBE material.

I thought they had split years ago.

They had been on "hiatus" for a few years.

Pretty much everyone knew they were never ending that hiatus though. This is just a formality, I suppose.
Title: Re: Godspeed - Officially 86ed
Post by: MusicScribbles on 10 Feb 2008, 11:06
I have to say I don't know how I would compare Silver Mt. Zion to Godspeed, considering Silver Mt. Zion's new album not really being post-rock too much. This isn't that sad though. The band had a good run years ago, and still does. I don't think it matters now that they've officially split. It's been said already on here, that even though there was some hope, we all knew the chances of another album. (Or maybe feared, depending on how much you liked the band.)

Weren't Weezer on "hiatus" for a little bit?

Then again, they came back with Make Believe, so..uh...

Primus came back and made an EP... uh... Didn't Gang of Four get back together and rerecord an album not too long ago? I don't know if that was a hiatus.

I don't understand why anybody considers this especially bad news.  Aside from the first 10 minutes of Lift Yr. Skinny Fists... and "Moya", other bands have come along and done everything GY!BE did, and better.  And Silver Mt. Zion is just such a better band, especially considering their last two releases.

And anybody who knew anything about the members of the band knew that it was a miracle they ever put anything out at all when the "interpersonal issues" are taken into account.

i don't see why this is relevant, i mean, they haven't released any noteworthy material within the past six years, and Yanqui U.X.O. was trash... and the output of A Silver Mt. Zion is leagues above Godspeed's... if anything, this just means more ASMZ records to look forward to  :-D

I don't feel like anyone is taking this news badly, except for maybe the OP (If you aren't, I'm sorry I said that.). This thread is really just a reason to wonder why they took so long to let the world know they aren't a band called Godspeed You! Black Emperor anymore. It's interesting that they took so long to finally agree that the band was done with. Were they milking the fans' collective hopes and dreams? Maybe!

Milking them to what end? If you've said your band is on hiatus then there's not much reason for you to go the next step and say you've split up. You won't be getting offers of gigs you have to keep turning down or anything like that since you've let it be known you aren't active for the moment. The only benefit to yourself would be to no longer be pestered with questions about whether you were coming back or not, and that balanced against cutting yourself off from the possibility of maybe doing something again probably isn't much of a gain.

I think what I said was that they were being cruel and trying to keep their fans hoping for an end to hiatus. This statement was also not meant. It was supposed to be a joke, of sorts. Damn you, internets, for not letting me communicate the tone of my voice!

Title: Re: Godspeed - Officially 86ed
Post by: sean on 10 Feb 2008, 20:06
Okay so maybe it is a bit wrong, but I wouldn't say it's completely wrong. It gives absolutely no credit to the jazzy post-rock sound Tortoise created or the psychedelic sound that whatever band created, but they are still a pretty definitive band in my opinion. At least would it be reasonable to say they are the definitive crescendo based post-rock band? And that is a pretty big chunk of post-rock.

I was gonna be all snide and post a link to that TWDY thread, but then I saw that you had posted in it numerous times.
...
The thing is, you can't say "it's not completely wrong" about such a sweeping statement. They were influential, yes. But by no means could you defend the claim that they "defined the post-rock genre."

Edit: *facepalm* the difference between "can" and "can't" is fairly important.
Title: Re: Godspeed - Officially 86ed
Post by: sean on 10 Feb 2008, 20:24
Well, okay, fair enough. I suppose I have no right to make such a sweeping statement either, since I am hardly an expert on any form of music. I have always thought of them as the defining post-rock band in my opinion though. There's just something about Godspeed that seems to sum up what post-rock is whenever I listen to it.

Perhaps Jackie was onto something with this subjective reality theory he brought up in environment/argument about god thread.

That is just because you are using the narrow definition of post-rock, which in fact is "bands that sound like GY!BE or Mogwai".

Listen to Flying Saucer Attack sometime.

I think we've finished ragging on those who haven't listened as far back as some others have. I could say that Slint started the movement. I could say that Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis, Disco Inferno, or Cul de Sac influenced the genre (Cul de Sac are pretty great.) but there would be no point. Hell, I could say that The Velvet Underground started post-rock (Apparently they influenced EVERYTHING. What the hell, music journalists?) but...sorry, I'm done. I made my point (hopefully).
Also, where is this stuff? We should get to uploading all of these 'post-rock influences' for the mediafire thread instead of just making claims on their credibility.
Zero, can I have some Flying Saucer Attack? Please?

I think we've finished ragging on those who haven't listened as far back as some others have.

It has nothing to do with timeline; there is still post-rock being made that does not sound like GY!BE.

I just do not approve of having an entire genre name reserved for bands that sound like them.

That would be like saying "The Mars Volta and Coheed and Cambria pretty much define modern prog rock".

I'm pretty well indifferent to this. They made good music, and like all good things they came to an end. At least they didn't try to stretch it while it obviously wasn't working.

Do people think that when a band breaks up it's more dissappointing that they won't release any new material or that they won't have another chance to see them live?

I did a journal on this on last.fm that I think sums up my thoughts quite well:

Quote

GYBE FINALLY BREAK UP YAY
10 Feb 2008, 07:04

Good to see that this band will not release any more records. It was looking quite unlikely, but at least now we can all be secure in that knowledge. Pretentious, boring rubbish I say- If only they'd split up before they had formed. Or something.

Also: I've been listening to Metallica's Load recently. I think it has a bit of filler but a lot of songs are really quite good. Outlaw Torn and Bleeding Me in particular are quite epic- I think Metallica sure could've showed 'em how to write epic songs.

Load > All of GYBE's output.

THAT IS ALL.

Here's hoping ASMZ follow suit and split up.

Infact, I'm doing this right now. I dislike a lot of music, but I don't troll their fan base and post inflammatory comments. I don't think that's a good way to endear yourself to people. Must be a slow day in music, P4K. What's the point of rehashing the story and dismissing the claims with absolutely no proof save a quote that says "We've been apart for years now, yeah. We're not officially broken up but we will be eventually. Quit bugging me about it"

Also while it's fairly expected, this makes me sad.

My way of saying "I hope I never hear about a band/person/inanimate object again" is basically by calling for their death in an automobile accident. It's not meant to be taken seriously, but people tend to take it the wrong way - I had another similiar, but much longer/angrier argument with someone about this on my school facebook group where I wished everyone there the same fate. Sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek-ness does not typically go well over the internet, unfortunately.

Also: If you don't troll fan bases and post inflammatory comments then you're missing out, it's a great deal of fun. Sure, this may annoy people, but then a thread about a band I like will come up and everyone will get along again- and if someone wants to troll that thread, then that's fine by me. Or at least, I like to think that I'd still get lulz from it anyway.

Whether you genuinely mean it or not, there are some things that it is never okay to say. Think carefully about this. People have feelings, and shaking them up for kicks is a very asshole thing to do.
For the record, telling all your classmates you wanted them to die is a VERY asshole thing to do. Don't be the asshole, the bad guy.
I understand what you said about 'trolling' for the sake of discussion, but you definitely went about that the wrong way. The idea of playing devil's advocate is not to offend other people by rudely stating an opinion that's fighting the tide.
Look carefully at this thread. People are taking what you are saying out of context and it's making you seem like a much bigger asshole than you are. Playing the asshole and pulling it off is VERY difficult.  Most people who try just end up selling themselves short.
