Title: Anybody know anything about Caterpillars?
Post by: HellStorm on 12 Feb 2008, 07:26
I had no idea where to put this...
Anyways, Anybody know any species of caterpillars, specifically black hairy ones, with a yellow orange stripe right down its back, and orange striped across?
=D
Help please?

caterpillars are really cute!

i used to collect these kinds when i was little!  they were everywhere!

the neighbors kids would blow them up, though and then the street would be filled with caterpillar guts. it was terrible! :(

this thread should now be about cute/interesting bugs. like inchworms!

Inchworms!

I'd play with these when I was little. Especially if they were on the play ground, I'd get them off the concrete, let them crawl all over my hands, and then put them in a tree, because I didn't want people to squish it.

I know they aren't caterpillars, but praying mantises are awesome!

If we're doing cute bugs, I'm quite partial to ladybugs.

They're adorable.... usually... until there are thousands in your home and you need to vacuum them from the ceiling and walls.

This thread would be less offensive if we hadn't had an equally pointless caterpillar thread (http://"http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,17174.0.html") a few months ago.

MaiAda, I despise the caterpillars you posted:( They're invasive gypsy moth caterpillars (AKA those gross tent-weaving ones) and they destroy foliage like no other, doing permanent damage to trees.

I'm curious as to why the OP made the post- did you have a run-in with a particularly nasty spiny caterpillar? Scouts always used to get the spines in their hands at camp, you can use clear packing tape to help pull out the spines even if you can't see them, if that's what happened. The site Joe posted is good for identifying/finding whether it was poisonous.

I like the tiny black inchworms we used to find when out in trees! As with caterpillars they also have the most awesome way of moving ever.

I had a "wildlife factfile" one of the binders you got all the sheets sent out to you with, must have cost a bomb but as a kid I read them for literally hours a day, they taught me to read and the biggest 2 files I had were birds, and bugs so if I were at home in my attic I could tell you lots about caterpillars and the like, but rite now all I have in this little flat is the interbutts.

I stopped likeing ladybugs when I was climbing trees and there were 2 of them doing it like, rite next to where I was about to go. Srsly guise, get a room.

This post is kinda pointless then and I am sorry.

I need to learn some new words also.

It amuses me so hard how ladybugs are called "ladybirds" in England.

They're ladybirds in all the colonies!

Am I still a hippie if I spent my childhood gleefully stomping on them because of it?

I've never heard them called ladybirds by anyone!?

I'm not too fond of Caterpillars due to the massive clumps of Spitfires that live around my area. Those bastards hurt.

[EDIT - Turns out they're actually wasp larvae. ]

Maybe it's just because my early childhood was in South Africa then.

Also, Spluff's post has  reminded me how great Australian trees are.

Well, *technically* most spitfires are the larvae of wood wasps or sawflies, so they're related to wasps but aren't quite them and  they're sans sting.

I found it my little pet slinky (thats what I named it...ahem, not completely lame ¬¬') is in fact poisonous. But only if you lick it....
I love caterpillars and also, I call them ladybirds and lady bugs =]
Now ladyboys....they are a completely different story ;]
