I personally like Cap'n Jazz's rendition of "Take On Me." I also second the Smashing Pumpkin's version of "Landslide." Also, I'm really digging that Xiu Xiu cover of "Under Pressure."

-
Springsteens Thunder Road by Tortoise and Bonnie Prince Billy.
-
I am unimpressed that nobody has mentioned me yet.
I'm wasted on you people, really.
-
Just discovered that Green Day's cover of John Lennon's _Working Class Hero_ is ten times better than the Lennon original. Bah.
I don't have four more, but I do like the Pet Shop Boys' cover of Willie Nelson's _Always On My Mind_, and *loathe* Quietdrive's version of Cyndi Lauper's _Time After Time_.
Disclaimer: I am old, and have no taste in music.
That is all.
-
1. tori amos - '97 bonnie and clyde (eminem)*
2. cat power - bathysphere (smog)**
3. tv on the radio - mr. grieves (the pixies)
4. first person shooter - take to the sky (tori amos)***
5. nina...jesus, what the fuck is her name? she was in veruca salt or rasputina or one of those bands. you know, with chicks and shi- oh, nina gordon - straight out of compton (nwa)
*- i do not enjoy this cover so much as it creeps me right the fuck out.
**- sorry, bill callahan, chan's version is better here. for what it's worth your version of "red apple falls" is still the best. i wonder if that's why they broke up.
***- as soon as i can find an mp3 of this, i will post it. it's hilarious.
-
Kiss Me Deadly - Reel Big Fish (originally done by Lita Ford)
Tom Sawyer- Deadsy (originally done by RUSH)

5 favorites:
Famous Blue Raincoat - The Handsome Family (Leonard Cohen)
Wig-Wam Bam - Gavin Friday (Sweet)
Sex (I'm A) - Lovage (Berlin)
Jackie - Scott Walker (Jacques Brel)

joke responses, but no seriously:
Venus in Furs - The Melvins (Velvet Underground), The World's Greatest - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (R. Kelly), I Would Die 4 U - Of Montreal (Prince and the Revolution), Fantasy - Final Fantasy (Mariah Carey)
2. (Somewhere over the) Rainbow - That1Guy (he covers it instrumentally though, playing the vocal melody on a saw.)
My favorite is the large Hawaiian version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL-uL2M3xvM&feature=related).
edit: quote is not modify
-
Sugarcoma - Crazy (Britney Spears)
Warren Suicide - Yer Blues (The Beatles)
Minor Threat - (I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone (The Monkees)
The Beatles - Twist And Shout (The Isley Brothers, I think?)
Refused - Voodoo People (The Prodigy)
-
Deadsy covering a Rush song.
I'm not ready for this.
None of us are ready for this.
-
1. Superstar, Sonic Youth (Originally by The Carpenters)
Yes! That is such a great cover.
1. The Jam - Heat Wave (Martha & the Vandellas)
2. Belle & Sebastian - Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son (written by Serge Gainsbourg and orignally performed by France Gall, I think)
3. Magnetic Fields - The Book of Love (Peter Gabriel)
4. Silkworm - Ooh La La (The Faces)
5. Constantines - Temporary Thing (Lou Reed. I think they only do it live but it's awesome)
-
Don't know if I can think of 5, but Siouxsie and the Banshees version of "The Passenger" is up there, as is the Dead Kennedys "Viva Los Vegas."
-
1. (I can't get no) Satisfaction - Björk & PJ Harvey
2. Bad Moon Rising - Rasputina
-
13th Floor Elevators - (It's all over now) Baby Blue {Bob Dylan}
Marissa Nadler - Famous Blue Raincoat {Leonard Cohen}
Ben Folds - Bitches ain't shit {Dr. Dre}
Curtis Mayfield - We've only just begun {The Carpenters}
Novembre - Cloudbusting {Kate Bush}
That Curtis song reminds me of Happy Gilmore (the scene with Chubs at the piano), so it wins extra happy points!
-
Sisters of Mercy - Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones)
Minor Threat - Stepping Stone (Monkees)
She Wants Revenge - Kidnap the Sandy Claws (Nightmare Before Christmas)
Rebreather - No False Suns (Lungfish)
Venetian Snares - Ongyilkos Vasarnap (originally by a Hungarian composer who's name escapes me, but famously redone by Billie Holiday)
-
I still pretty genuinely think Weird Al's cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody" is probably one of the best things he has ever done and one of the better covers I have ever heard.
Jose Gonzales' cover of the Knife's "Heartbeats" redefined that song for me.
I'm sure there's more I could name, but can't think of.
-
3. Magnetic Fields - The Book of Love (Peter Gabriel)
You know, that is the other way around.
Also, i'd never ever felt like a hipster until Juno came out! I mean, it's not like that cover was uber obscure or anything, but now every darned kid knows it!
-
Actually what makes me feel like a hipster is that I knew and loved the Moldy Peaches song that's repeated throughout and also ends the film.
-
3. Magnetic Fields - The Book of Love (Peter Gabriel)
You know, that is the other way around.
Also, i'd never ever felt like a hipster until Juno came out! I mean, it's not like that cover was uber obscure or anything, but now every darned kid knows it!
Oh, my bad. Is this song in Juno or something?
-
Shiner- Feel Like Making Love (Bad Company)
Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane (Lou Reed)
Obadiah Parker - Hey Ya (Outkast)
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
Nine Inch Nails - Dead Souls (Joy Division)
These were the only ones I could thnk of off the top of my head. There are certainly better ones.
-
Oh, I knew I forgot one. I know it's cliched but...
Ben Folds Five - Bitches Ain't Shit (Dr. Dre)
-
To clarify, The Book of Love is a song by The Magnetic Fields, which Peter Gabriel covered in a much inferior fashion. Superstar, originally by Delaney and Bonnie was later covered by The Carpenters who were later covered by Sonic Youth and their version appears in Juno in quite a prominent fashion.
ON topic: Take Ecstasy With Me also by The Magnetic Fields was later covered by !!! in a superior fashion.
-
I think Ben Fold's version of "Bitches Ain't Shit" should be on everyone's list but here is mine.
Galaxie 500 - Ceremony (originally by New Order)
Tim Kinsella - A Picture Postcard (originally by the Promise Ring)
Seaweed - Go Your Own Way (originally by Fleetwood Mac)
Braid - This Charming Man (originally by the Smiths)

Queens of the Stone Age - Never Say Never (Romeo Void)
-
JohnnyC- Chasing Cars (Snow Patrol)
Please refer to the "Lets See Who Can Do the Shittiest Cover" thread.
-
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley (Cohen)
Take On Me - Cap'n Jazz (a-Ha)
Bitches Ain't Shit - Ben Folds (Dre)
Under Pressure - Xiu Xiu (Queen and Bowie)
Mr. Grieves - TV On The Radio (The Pixies)
Ooh La La - Silkworm (The Faces)
Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen (Elvis)
Little Honda - Yo La Tengo (The Beach Boys)
Androgynous - Crash Test Dummies (The Replacements) [Just kidding!]
-
Scribbles, Crazy Little Thing was definitely originally Queen.
Also, I came into this thread expecting to say something like NO ONE HAS EVER COVERED ANYTHING WELL SHUT UP, but I've been reminded that I enjoy !!!'s cover of Take Ecstasy, Xiu Xiu's cover of Under Pressure, and Ben Fold's cover of Bitches Ain't Shit.
Also, anything Johnny C has ever done.
-
Man, GenericName I am so sorry. The truth is I have been crazy all of these years for that song, relying on the opinion of a third grade friend that the song in question was actually an Elvis cover. Wow, I feel quite silly.
-
Tom Waits did a pretty awesome version of "Somewhere" from West Side Story.
I am also fond of:
"Down in the Park" - Marilyn Manson [Gary Numan]
"Love Will Tear Us Apart (red)" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart (black)" - Swans [Joy Division]
"Wild Is the Wind" - David Bowie [Originally performed by Johnny Mathis, but Bowie basically covered Nina Simone's version]
"The Model" - Big Black [Kraftwerk]
...I think Boris should cover their namesake at some point, just for the hell of it.
-
Right now, it's definitely:
(6. Radiohead - The Headmaster Ritual)
5. Spiritualized - True Love Will Find You In The End (Daniel Johnston)
4. Jeff Buckley - The Boy With The Thorn In His Side (The Smiths)
3. The Dresden Dolls - War Pigs (Black Sabbath)
2. Cake - Strangers In The Night (Frank Sinatra)
1. Jenny Lewis ft./ Ben Gibbard, Conor Oberst, M. Ward - Handle With Care (The Traveling Wilburys)
-
Man, GenericName I am so sorry. The truth is I have been crazy all of these years for that song, relying on the opinion of a third grade friend that the song in question was actually an Elvis cover. Wow, I feel quite silly.
...this is either unnecessarily sarcastic, or a tad whingeing. I'm leaning towards the former. Although if it is, your comment on the fact that it's distinctly Elvis-y seems moot when they did that deliberately.
-
Galaxie 500 - Ceremony (originally by New Order)
This is the only one I was going to mention. I love it.
-
Love Will Tear Us Apart - The Swans (Originally Joy Division) I can't actually remember which version is the one I like, damnit
Severance - Bauhaus (originally Dead can Dance)
Station to Station - The Merry Thoughts (originally Bowie)
Diddy Wah Diddy - Lydia Lunch (I've actually no idea who originally did this one)
Third Uncle - Bauhaus (originally Brian Eno)
-
"Diddy Wah Diddy" was Bo Diddley.
Also done awesomely by Captain Beefheart.
-
"All Along the Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan)

-
Mm. I can only think of two covers I like at the moment
Charlie- Sophie Koh (Split Enz)
You Just Like Me 'Cause Im Good In Bed- Missy Higgins (Skyhooks)
-
"Diddy Wah Diddy" was Bo Diddley.
Also done awesomely by Captain Beefheart.
Ahh thanks, I've been wondering about that for a while.
I've heard the Captain Beefheart one, that's also incredibly awesome.
-
This might sound lame, but Smash Mouth's cover of Why Can't We Be Friends (War) is one of my favorite covers of all time. Frijid Pink's psychedelic version of House of the Rising Sun is a really cool take on a folk classic. Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer's cover of Riding Dirty is awesome, though I've yet to track down a live recording, you can find videos of them doing it live on Youtube. The Toasters version of Secret Agent Man (Johnny Rivers) has a really cool vibe to it, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' cover of Detroit Rock City (Kiss) I like about a thousand times more than the original. Other honorable mentions are Blue Cheer doing Summertime Blues (Eddie Cochran), Metallica's cover of Turn the Page (Bob Seger) and pretty much anything by Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine.
-
Bring the Pain- Mindless Self Indulgence (Method Man)
-
i know i might be biased. but this is, IMO, a really good cover.

Enon-White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane)
Whoa what.
Also, I've never really thought much of that "Just Like Heaven" cover. It's different enough to be its own thing, but inevitably I stop part way through the song and play the original.
-
1: Joan Baez - "Let It Be" (originally by The Beatles, durrr)
2: Anberlin - "Love Song" (originally by The Cure)
3: Shinedown - "Simple Man" (originally by Lynard Skynard; usually I hate both of these bands, but dudefromShinedown's wail is so delicious.)
4: Nirvana - "The Man Who Sold The World" (originally by David Bowie)
5: Placebo - "Running Up That Hill" (originally by Kate Bush. Oh, God, this song is... hlblhlblhlblhlblhblhb. His voice is a little irritating, but the beat is so pulsing and haunting.)

That would be Son House. I think.
-

-
CAKE - both War Pigs and I Will Survive
Ted Leo - Since U Been Gone
U2 - Helter Skelter
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Leave Them All Behind
-
OneTwo's cover of Have a Cigar is mental. As is Sunday Munich's "Wish You Were Here"
-
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Leave Them All Behind
Aw, I can't find this anywhere
-
Also, you all suck for not mentioning Sugababes - I bet you look good on the dancefloor (Arctic babes mix)
Best. Cover. Ever.
srsly
-
Name a song done by Manfred Mann's Earth Band.
There you go. Thread over.
Of course, Tom Jones' cover of Ring of Fire should count.
Also, Project Chaos (http://s3k.ocremix.org/).
Oh, and some guy did a recitation of Like a Rolling Stone. It might have been Willie Rushton but I'm not sure as I never did get to see to whom it was credited.
-
Peter Sellers acting (in speech) the words of a number of Beatles songs on "The Songs of Sellers" - there is nothing funnier!
Siouxsie - Helter Skelter
Paul
-
Dude, Tom Jones’ best cover is when he did Portishead.
Top five, aphabetical by artist:
Babyland – “Burning Up” (Madonna)
Cibo Matto – “The Candy Man” (Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory)
Coil – “Tainted Love” (Gloria Jones)

Revolting Cocks – “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” (Rod Stewart)
¨Soft Cell – “Tainted Love” (Gloria Jones)
Super Furry Animals ¨– “Calimero” (tv theme song)
For a while, I seriously thought it was impossible to screw up a cover of “Tainted Love.” Then Marilyn Manson covered it.
*edit* Shit, I forgot that Slits cover is fucking awesome.
-
I don't usually approve of John Mayer, but I cannot deny the greatness of his version of Kid A. Maybe I just like it because I never really thought about Kid A as being played on accoustic guitar. :/
-
No order to these:
No Quarter - Tool (Led Zep original)
When the Levee Breaks - A Perfect Circle (cover of the Led Zep version, first written by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie)
Imagine - A Perfect Circle (John Lennon original)

Also there was a good shout for "Enjoy the Silence - Lacuna Coil (Depeche Mode original)" better than the original imo.
-
I like really weird covers.
Ohio - Devo(Originally by Neil Young)
I still think their version of Satisfaction is the best cover evarrr.
-
This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bLloLR8GZo
-
Malasangre's cover of "Venus in Furs" is amazing. So dirty and downtuned and heavy!

I really want to hear that US Maple cover of Lay Lady Lay now.
-
Modern Love-The Last Town Chorus (david bowie)
-
Luna's cover of Sweet Child O Mine is pretty brilliant
-
In no particular order
Fear Factory - Cars (Gary Numan)
Destruction - Whiplash (Metallica) - ok, this one technically isnt a "new take" as its a thrash band covering a thrash band, but Destruction actually SPED THE SONG UP.
Tiamat - Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones)
Type O Negative - Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young)
Stahlhammer - Der Mann Mit Dem Koks (Falco)
-
Rammstein - Stripped (Depeche Mode)
Arcade Fire - Distortions (Clinic)

Rodrigo y Gabriela - Free Bird (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
-
Luna's cover of Sweet Child O Mine
I MUST GET MY HANDS ON THIS NOW
-
I'll never understand why they didn't put it on Lunafied, but it was on Days of Our Nights and an otherwise quite awful compilation called.... "Sleepytime Songs" or some shit. You can probably find it online.
http://hypem.com/track/497294 (http://hypem.com/track/497294)
There it is.
-
Ew
No offense, but that sounds as bad as the Sheryl Crow version.
-
None taken. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea.
-
Iron & Wine - Such Great Heights (The Postal Service)
This. So beautiful.
-
whatever happened to the thread where we made covers of songs that could have been so much more awesome than they were?
-
Manic Street Preachers - Take The Skinheads Bowling (Camper Van Beethoven)
Mansun - Shot By Both Sides (Magazine)
I knew there were more of us on here - good call!
Also, whoever mentioned the Amanda Palmer cover of Death Cab's I Will Follow You Into The Dark...
That song pretty much broke me. Her voice does special, special things...
-
Joshua Radin's excellent cover of Only You by Yazoo.
Michael Bublé's cover of Queen's Crazy Little Thing Called Love (I cannot emphasise enough just how awesome this is).
HIM's cover of Chris Issack's Wicked Game
Coldplay's live cover (i think at glastonbury) or Kylie's Can't Get You Out OF my Head. Pure brilliance, on a stick.
The Pogues and The DUbliners version of the traditional The Irish Rover
