So I recently came upon a demo of the game Audiosurf, and found it to be great fun. I don't know if anybody else has played this, but it's up on Steam at the moment for $10. Basically, it's a rhythm game. You install it and you choose songs from your hard drive to play, and the game synthesizes a "racetrack" from that song, with colored blocks placed where the beat kicks in. It's like a cross between a rhythm game, Tetris (there are three columns you can fill with blocks, 3 of a kind eliminates blocks, filling the columns loses you points) and one of those collection races you'd see in Nights or a Mario game. If you put the right song in it's quite glorious.
The demo can be found on Steam. BE WARNED, however, that the demo contains only 5 plays. Not even 5 songs, but 5 plays, so choose your first songs wisely. Slow songs are not advised. There are 14 variations on the game in the full version, but only 4 are playable from the demo.
Check it out, it's a lot of fun.

I've been shamelessly promoting this everywhere. Last night I played it for 3 hours. You should definitely play Soulwax at some point or another, E-Talking was a really intense song. If you want to add me as a friend, it's the same as my username.
-
I haven't bought it yet :( Just had the demo. Soon though.
Battles was a lot of fun.
-
Well, look at it this way. I also bought Civ 4 and Garry's Mod. This game has been played longer than both. It's how I listen to the music in the sendspace thread. Makes the albums onewheel uploads that much better.

Hate to go off topic, but what is Garry's Mod? I mean, I gather you can do crazy stuff with it, but, what exactly is it? Or rather, what would you do with it?
-
I played the beta for awhile, lot's of fun. My favorite songs so far:
-Thunderhorse
-Through the fire and flames
-All of Daft Punk's Alive 2007

It's a program that utilizes the Source physics engine. It doesn't actually offer gameplay, but it allows you to manipulate things in the gameworld. You can create Rube Goldberg contraptions or pose characters from the Valve games and give them facial expressions, which makes it popular for webcomic purposes.
-
Ah okay, thank you!
-
I downloaded the demo and honestly I suck at it because I cant figure out the buttons, I am always in the LHS lane and have to madly mash the arrow keys and asd at the same time to try and move about.
Am I doing something wrong?
-
You're not using the mouse. It makes things way easier. You can also use a 360 controller. The old xbox controllers seem to cause a memory leak.
-
I've seen this game in action and I have less of an idea of how its actually played every time.
-
You try to collect as many of the colored blocks in groups of three as possible. White and black blocks are extra points once they reach the bottom of the stack, avoid all grey blocks. There are a couple powerups that help you group colors. That's basically it.
-
There is no Mac version of this game. I am so disappointed.
-
He said the next thing he's gonna work on is a console port. So you might not be entirely out of luck.
-
I tried to use the mouse, it made no difference at all.
intelli 3.0
-
That does sound odd...you're supposed to be able to use the arrow keys and wasd, but there may be some kind of odd driver conflict going on. There is a couple mice that don't work, a keyboard that has to have things plugged into it's USB ports for it to work. This is an indie game and thus couldn't be tested on every possible combination of hardware, I imagine there will be several more updates made to it. In the meantime, borrow a friend's 360 controller and see if that works.
-
Don't ask here for that kind of stuff. Check Audiosurf's website. It's being flooded with "My game is broke in such-and-such a manner" right now and if you're going to find help, that's the best place to look.
Anyway:
Favorite song so far has been Love Train by Wolfmother. It syncs up super nice with the game's engine. Era Vulgaris by Queens of the Stone Age has been the most interesting track so far, with lots of big dips in it.
-
intellimouse 3.0 plugged into ps2 via usb adaptor (low on USB ports, all 10 filled) and a razer tarantula keyboard.
Any help would be awesome, thanks.
-
I bought it without even trying the demo first..
Certain songs, if they're fast enough, will have loops in the full version. :)
-
We should all put our Audiosurf IDs on here so we can add each other and therefore compare scores on songs.
Mine is Sandmang.

Anything by Soulwax is good. Interestingly enough, the less noodly songs on Deloused in the Comatorium make very interesting dippy tracks. As for game modes I favor the Mono types, since it's relatively easy to get tripped up in the Pointman modes and it allows you to enjoy to pay some attention to the song as well as the gameplay. Trying hard to get that Ninja achievement.
Oh, also, Audiosurf is the first Steam game to use their XBL-esque achievement system.
-
Yeah, soulwax is awesome. Other good stuff is a lot of that psychedelic post rock that onewheel put in the mediafire thread. Titan, Leech, Moccassin, Akhmed, all kick ass. I've done quite a few corkscrews. And like I said earlier, my username is the same as the one I use here.
-
Oh, also, Audiosurf is the first Steam game to use their XBL-esque achievement system.
You mean first non-Valve game. TF2, Portal, and HL:Ep. 2 all have achievements.
/nitpicky
Anyway: You guys need to play some Michal Jackson songs. THILLER!
-
Let's have a little friendly competition.
I have compiled 3 songs, u-Ziq - Glink, I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - Lights, and LCD Soundsystem - Too Much Love.
HURR HURR:
http://www.mediafire.com/?myderzm4rgh
If you want to participate, post your login and intention. I'll add you and can monitor the scores from here. Next Sunday, March 2nd, we'll look at the scores and see who the winners are. For this one we'll do Pro Mono only, which seems to be the most popular game by far. As a reward, I guess the winners get to choose a song for the group to play. Hopefully this works.
Anybody in?
-
I'll throw down, sure. Hell, I'll do them in the next five minutes. For the third time, username is the same as it is here.
When I tried to do yours, it took out the spaces...oh well.
Edit: Nevermind...I just hadn't played a song that you did yet. I was worried it was looking for the wrong name.
-
Hell, why not. I'm in.
-
So apparently on the last two songs (didn't check the first) I have double your score, Kid. Might wanna start practicing.
-
Yeah, that first song hasn't been coming up on the scoreboards at all, if it doesn't work by tonight I'll have to up a substitute.
I was within 9,000 points of you on "Too Much Love" last night. Had I managed to get the clean finish I'd have a good 12-15 on you.
-
I need a better rig, or at least one that's more compatible with audiosurf. I have fun, but i simply cannot get stealth. not because I'm not coordinated enough, but because i get fucked in the asshole about halfway through every song by the game. It starts to get real choppy for about 5 seconds and then to catch up to where the song is supposed to be at once the lag spike happens, the track ZOOMS at mach over 9000. It's literally impossible to dodge all the greys that appear, especially because halfway through every song is usually when it picks up in terms of notes on the board.
*sigh*
Still, I'm not too far behind on that Lights song.
addendum:
I lied. I got stealth on that Glink song. The only reason I could do it, though, was because every time I got that weird speed up hitch, I'd make my ship jump. I could probably hit every note on that song without hitting a gray one if I didn't get that stupid glitch.
-
Pro mono? I pity the fool who don't play Ninja Mono!
Kid van Pervert- The Soulwax remix of Robot Rock may be the weirdest song to play ever.
Also, username for whoever wants to add it: Morca007
I can be found on the charts for Ninja Mono Elite, suckas.
-
Apparently I'm not terribly good at this, so elite difficulties are probably something I'll have to pass on in the future.
I get that glitch on my laptop, but not on my desktop. Make sure you've got all the relevant bells and whistles turned down for best performance.
-
Yeah, already have.
There's nothing I can do about it, apparently, unless they optimize the game better with successive patches.
I'm likely to reinstall Windows here shortly, though, because I've been having issues with viruses and I can't seem to clear them no matter what I do.
-
I can do Ninja Mono just fine (already have, just not on the competition songs so as to play by the rules). As far as bad performance, I'd just try to make sure you shut off any unnecessary programs while you're running it, which you probably already tried.
-
Yeah, I've done that as well. I'd do the ctrl+alt+dlt thing, but the problem is that it just shows programs running, not processes like it's supposed to. I can't go in and shut down all the little middly crapola. I have no idea how to get Windows Task Manager to work like it used to.
-
There's not a 'processes tab'? That's...odd. Them viruses might be taking over.
-
It's been that way for like a year, though. I think I somehow changed a setting and don't know how to change it back.
-
A friend showed me this last weekend, it's kind of become my new audio player.
Everyone needs to play Lions and Tigers by Asobi Seksu. By far the most fun I've had in the game, when the early heavy part comes in it's beautiful.
For anyone interested, my username is yesdoctor!
-
It's been that way for like a year, though. I think I somehow changed a setting and don't know how to change it back.
Yeah, my brother dicked around on my computer one day and changed mine to that as well, might've downloaded a virus or something. It only shows the little window with running programs, and no menus or tabs of any kind?
-
So, apparently I'm the only person that owns Audiosurf that's done Heard It Through The Grapevine as performed by Creedance Clearwater Revival.
I know it's a long song (11:04 minutes), but damn it if it isn't classic as all hell. I DEMAND YOU PLAY IT. It's about 7 minutes of glorious Foggerty solo. The track is pretty much downhill as soon as the solo starts and doesn't let up until the very end.
-
I know there's already a contest, but I am throwing down the gauntlet on Surfer Rosa. I challenge you to best my score on a song from Surfer Rosa & Come on Pilgrim, using Ninja Mono. I choose to use Ironman, but it is not required.
Top scores so far:
Gigantic- (http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/5001/giganticzo0.th.jpg) (http://img180.imageshack.us/my.php?image=giganticzo0.jpg) Caribou- (http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/3170/caribouyg6.th.jpg) (http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?image=caribouyg6.jpg) Tony's Theme- (http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/999/tonysthemejg0.th.jpg) (http://img256.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tonysthemejg0.jpg)
-
Could you maybe possibly put those three in a zip and put it on mediafire and give us the link in code tags? I would challenge you right now, except I don't have those songs. Same reason I haven't answered any other challenges besides the one Kid put up.
-
I can do Ninja Mono just fine (already have, just not on the competition songs so as to play by the rules).
Just FYI, it shows each section for difficulty and your name can be up there for each one. If you did do the competition songs on Ninja Mono, it wouldn't make a helluva lot of difference in the outcome because your Pro Mono score wouldn't change.
I usually play on Ninja Mono myself. I'd like to play on Eraser or Pointman, etc, but the problem is that I purchased the game thinking I was getting a rhythm game (you know, similar to like Amplitude or something) and not so much a puzzle game. I think someone else has already stated in this thread you get to pay more attention to the song while you're doing Mono.
The new patch has helped smooth things out a bit although I still get zoom mode as it's now known between me and my roommate. If I hit the escape button to pause the song right away, my computer catches up and I'm alright. If I take too long, though, it still tried to catch up to where I should be at in the song even while paused so if there's a lot of gray things in the way, I'll snag them all. I have discovered, however, the song most recently cached in my memory plays fine. If I just let a song go and then play it again, I get no hitches.
ANYWAY: I'm thinking of a 3 song challenge to make up right now for us all, but I want to play through more of what I've got to deliver the maximum amount of goodness.
-

Yeah, I know what you mean. As soon as I played the three he put up I went looking for some.
-
Since all the links in the
Sendspace Mediafire thread are dead, I'm uploading the album now.
Surfer Rosa and Come on Pilgrim:
http://www.mediafire.com/?mhuxbyv4z90
-
On 5 hours of sleep, I got kinda close on Gigantic, really close on Tony's Theme, and about halfway with Caribou.
-
Somebody else is going to have to put up the final scores. My Audiosurf computer has been in limbo for the past 4 days.
-
For Audiosurf Challenge 1:
u-Ziq - Glink
--Dimmukane = 113,966
--Sandmang = 97,947
--the_pop_stalinist = 70,670
I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - Lights
--Dimmukane = 67,900
--the_pop_stalinist = 49,216
--Sandmang = 48,532
LCD Soundsystem - Too Much Love
--Dimmukane = 135,504
--Sandmang = 124,774
--the_pop_stalinist = 113,051
Clearly Dimmukane is the victor. I only barely beat Kid van Pervert simply because he didn't do too well on that Glink song.
This was fun. I'm going to make one for us to do for this next week once I get a chance. (I sort of have to reinstall windows soon, however, so this might take awhile. I've got to backup the 15 gigs or so of music I've got on my machine.)
-
I've got two I definitely want to do, and I'm looking for a third. Not because I'm good at them, but I think they're more fun to do.
http://www.mediafire.com/?2kz9wxgzub1
Okay, here's challenge 2:
Justice - Phantom Pt II (Soulwax Remix) ---- because I haven't stopped listening to it all week
uneXpect - Silence 011010701 ---- there's a lot of stop/start in the first half, and then a really short pause and all downhill in the second half
Grandaddy - The Crystal Lake ---- it's just an awesome song and the track and beat seem to fit moreso than other songs
-
Just placed second globally for Crystal Lake (login name is "Scope!"). I've never heard of Grandaddy before, but that's an amazing track.
-
Have you seen 28 Days Later? They have the song from the supermarket scene. And they also do the song that goes "I wanna walk up the side of the mountain, I wanna walk down the other side of the mountain, I wanna swim with the fishes, and lie in the grass, I wanna do do doo, do do do doo" If you want, I can put a couple albums in the mediafire thread.
And it seems you didn't read the rules...the ship of the contest is Mono Pro. A) because it's more fun, and b) well I don't know, that's what I've been sticking too, along with everyone else in this thread in regards to the competition. You're not disqualified, you'll just have to tell us your highest score using that ship, and we have to trust that you're not lying.
Unless of course you're just trying the song out.
-
THEY do that supermarket song? I love that song. But don't bother with mediafire, I'm kind of an audiophile and all of my music is in Apple Lossless.
Arggh, you beat my Silence score.
EDIT: Fucking new page. Oh, and I rebeat you.
-
Using Mono Pro? It's only possible to get maybe a few hundred more points than me on the Soulwax song using Mono Pro. Maybe a few thousand with the uneXpect one.
Well, in any case, the album widely considered their best is Sophtware Slump.
The 'supermarket song (A.M. 180) is on Under the Western Freeway.
I'm fairly positive they're in the iTunes store, and are big enough to be in most record shops.
-
I recently reformatted my harddrive so I'm going to have to go track down all my songs again. Most of them I burnt to CDs or still have the original CDs somewhere, but it's still going to take a lot of time.
Basically, I'm going to save doing my own challenge for later.
Also I vote we do Ninja Mono instead of Mono Pro, just because Ninja mono is more difficult and can potentially unlock awards.
Addendum:
Dimmu, you're gonna have to replay The Crystal Lake because I demolished your score. I got 71,327 as opposed to your 50,951. Did play the song since you uploaded it? Or was your score from before they fixed mono scoring? Either way, I hit every note (which actually cost me 25% bonus because the last 3 notes don't sync up) and got stealth.
Additional PS:PS: I beat your Soulwax score, too. 114,252 to 113,106. I don't know who's in the lead because I forgot to jot down the scores for the other song, but you were ahead on that one by like 10k points because I didn't get clean finish.
That soulwax song was hot. I'm going to have to look into them.
-
If you wanna do Ninja Mono, that's fine with me, Kid was the one who suggested Mono Pro. And that score was before they "fixed" it. I'm not expecting to be the winner everytime, I figured the rules were, you win, you pick 3. If I won everytime, what would be the fun in that?
-
I suppose I'm just surprised because of the severe ass-kicking we all recieved last round. It's not calling you out so much as it is feeling accomplished, haha.
I should mention, since reinstalling windows, the game runs perfect. I think part of the reason I'm doing so much better is because I don't have to stress about predicting when the damn snags were going to occur.
How would you guys feel about a classic rock playlist for next time? I think I want to do Baba O'Reily by The Who for certain and figured I'd run with a theme.
-
this game is awesome. I picked it up about a week ago, and I can't stop playing it.
I don't think there is a game with more fun/dollar value out there right now (except for portal)
-
This game is amazing. I love it.
-
Finally, FINALLY officially beat the Mono Pro score for Silence. My old score using Vegas is higher so it doesn't appear on the scoreboards, but I grabbed a screenshot (http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/8462/stealthwinnerfs9.jpg) proving it. Mind you, this is using the new scoring system, so I'm still not better than you.
-
That one was with the new system it was the Soulwax song that was from the old system. Sweet.
-
So, Pitchfork put together an album of songs that they think go with this game pretty well and put it up for free download here. (http://asthmatickitty.com/music.php?releaseID=95)
About to run through it, will post opinions soon.
Well. Not having listened to a single one of those songs in my life, this was fuckin' awesome. The album (which is a bunch of tracks from different artists) sounds cohesive besides the fact that it was mixed for Audiosurf. Maybe I should actually read Pitchfork.
Also, the tetravox from the Mediafire thread is pretty sick. May upload here later.
-
Apparently the 3/21 update allows people to make texture mods to change the tunnels and fireworks and stuff. Information's at the www.audio-surf.com forums, someone's already made a Mod Manager in Python. Just throwing this out there.
-
I LOVE Audiosurf!
My tag is "A Little Bit Awesome"
my main problem with the game is that when I use S & D as well as arrow keys there's occasionally horrible little lag wherein I crash into the cars infront...and lose my stealth bonus..noooo!
-
Resurrection to point out an awesome thing.
This dude (http://chardish.nfshost.com/bodysurf/index.html) set up his Wii to play Audiosurf using the WiiFit balance board.
This is the greatest idea in the history of video games.
-
Holy Hell. Just did the Isis + Aereogramme "Low Tide" on premium graphics. Never in my life have i wanted so badly to be stoned.
Also, thank you for rezzing this and reminding me how long it had been since i played
-
Ew threadsurrection.
But anyway I was thinking this would be a good forum to ask what songs are totally good for playing with this game?
-
There's some good stuff up in the mediaf!re thread. The dancier or... riffier, the better. Planet Mu stuff, PNAU, Soulwax, Queens of the Stone Age, WE, Jay Reatard etc. etc.
-
I've been plaing this for a while but didn't notice a thread.
I am currently trying and failing to get decent with 21st Century Schizoid Man by King Crimson. I am failing so hard.
-
Heh, I downloaded this off TPB
I probably should buy it tho, GREAT game
