Title: A recommendation thread about black metal!
Post by: sean on 22 Feb 2008, 21:07
I really like what I've heard from this genre. I just don't know much about it, so I expect all of you to inform me rather than go research about it myself.

I've listen to Wolves in the Throne Room and Ulver for most of my black metal. You may recommend from there.

GO GO GO!

Touche

But seriously, that topic is gross and infected and stuff. I avoid that topic like the plauge cooties. Thats why I made my own special no cooties allowed thread.

Dude, being infected by Dave Murray is quite possibly the coolest infection you could ever wish for.

DAVE MURRY IS NOT BLACK METAL!

YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG!

What about Bill Murray (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4Px_1h3J9A)?

keep listening to Ulver.

Ditch Wolves In The Throne Room. Listen to Woods Of Ypres instead. They do it better and have been doing it for WAY longer.

What type of black metal recommendations do you want? Ultra true/grim/necro/Burzum-esque minimal production stuff, trendy Wolves In The Throne room type stuff, or crazy fast stuff like Dark Funeral?

Hmm, I thought Woods of Ypres only had one album and one demo out. Besides not really sounding all that much like Wolves in the Trone Room.

I would reccomend their demo though, it is pretty good. Their LP is not so good, for every black metal riff on there you get two cheesy rock riffs.

The best reccomendation here would be Agalloch. They are comparable to the first Ulver LP. Their first 2 albums are very folk inspired but the last one has more to do with post rock.

If you want to branch out of the folk/black scene (and I am assuming you have little to no experience with the genre as a whole, otherwise I shoul not have to tell you about these bands), then I reccomend listening to Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Dissection - Storm of the Lights Bane. Burzum for long, slow and atmospheric songs, Dissection for some great tremolo picked melodies. That should give you an idea of where you want to head next.

Burzum, black/folk? Theres not that much folk in it. IMO, falkenbach, windir, alkonost, menhir and mithotyn are vital bands to check out in the black/folk subgenre.

The underground BM-scene ist full ignorant Nazi fucktards, but beside that, there are many excellent Bands:

Nagelfar (with e, from Germany, NOT Naglfar)
Negura Bunget
Deathspell Omega
Arcturus
Shining
Dark Throne
Emperor
Immortal
Summoning
Satyricon
Siebenbürgen

I think he was suggesting Burzum as something to break out of black/folk with.

Eisregen
Gris
Mortifera
Vehementer Nos

And if you are don't mind NSBM:

Fullmoon
Graveland
Nachtfalke
Bilskirnir

I am a bit of a drudkh fan.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=4DzTHCRmyKs

This actually has a badass yet totally appropriate guitar solo at about 2:45. Black metal needs more guitar solos, to be sure.

I think this just makes me happy because most black metal doesn't satisfy both my need for angry bellowing pagans AND really-technical-guitarness.

Only the self-titled Borknagar album is really BM. Similiarly with Arcturus, everything after Aspera Hiems Symfonia can't really be described as black metal.

My personal recommendations of some black metal albums you should hear:

Aborym - With No Human Intervention
Bathory -  The Return...
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Carpathian Forest - Defending the Throne of Evil
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Deathspell Omega - Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

What I'd recommend:

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Emperor/Enslaved split
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Drudkh - Forgotten Legends
Nocternity - Onyx
Havohej - Dethrone the Son of God
Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon

Rawer stuff like abruptum, lucifugum, mysticum, vlad tepes and mutiilation is cool. I used to like emperor, anorexia nervosa, and early behemoth a lot too (nowadays I just listen to the behemoth demos). You can't go wrong with darkthrone, burzum, gorgoroth, carpathian forest, and impaled northern moonforest- all the old classics are just great. Xasthur are apparently very good, but I haven't listened to him really, so I can't comment. Oh yeah, and woodtemple. And branikald. And anaal nathrakh. And dodheimsgard. Or maybe some black/thrash like Absu, and I don't know, Sarcofago, (Some) bathory, sodom....Just explore for yourself and see what you like.

ps. If anyone ever wants stuff like Nyogthaeblisz, Trörkrvisätänsrökrëh, Vrasagaerhtvuula, or Ovbjennütkliskjalotronjialgijikualoasidjifjoýitik, I have it all up on soulseek.

Oh yes, beherit. And Eljudner. And....

Man, I never got Dodheimsgard. It always just seemed like they were trying too hard, if you get what I mean?

Post by: turtlspinr on 23 Feb 2008, 23:23
Dodheimsgard are excellent, specifically "Satanic Art" if you're looking for traditional BM stuff.

Dawn are excellent, but not exactly traditional black metal. Check out "Slaughtersun" for sure.

Taake are excellent, true black metal.

Arcanar are Welsh, I believe, and though I know next to nothing about them, their "Pylnyi Vladyka" record is very, very good.

Craft's "Fuck The Universe" record is very, very good.

Mörk Gryning, specifically on the "Maelstrom Chaos" record are excellent. Were, I guess that should be. I think they've broken up for good.

Depresy and Ninnghizhidda are both older bands that had a lot of symphonic black metal touches, but had really low death metal type vocals.

gotta throw Dawnbringer in there as well. Touches of black metal, as well as touches of Motorhead and Iron Maiden. "In Sickness and In Dreams" is phenomenal, but all their records have been good. Sound quality is always iffy.

1349 are great, seriously intense, at times pushing my limits of what music really is, but they are excellent in small doses.

can't ever ignore Carpathian Forest and their tongue in cheek black metal.

On a side note, Xasthur is really overrated.  The only Xasthur you'd need is his split with Leviathan.  That will cover Leviathan as well, though he's more tolerable and consistent than Xasthur.  Lurker of Chalice--another of Wrest's projects--is far better.  Also, be sure to look into Summoning.

I was expecting someone to catch me out when I said 'impaled northern moonforest', by the way. Don't check them out.

Arcturus is pretty closely related to Ulver, since Garm sang for thier first three albums.  The second and third albums (La Masquerade Infernale and The Sham Mirrors) are grand if you don't mind leaving traditional black metal in favor of prog/black metal/opera and trip-hop/prog/black metal/pop.  Their first (Ad Aspera Hiems Symphonia, I think) is pretty good, mostly because of Garm's voice and the unusually thin sounding production, as well as some nice riffs.

I really liked Weakling, who put out one album, Dead as Dreams, in 2000 and then disbanded.  It can be found via file-sharing and I think it's back in print.  Ludicrously low (as in Darkthrone/Madrigal of Night) production values and songs that average over 14 minutes apiece.
An unofficial myspace can be found here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=81206922 (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=81206922)

Yeah, I just caught that.  I dunno, their songs titles are amusing, and I seem to remember them having a song title generator online.  Of course this is completely independent of the fact that they are very much a novelty and nothing more (this is, after all, Anal Cunt's joke band, as probably everyone who's reading this knows).  Ah, Seth Putnam, my son my son.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seth_Putnam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seth_Putnam)  Dude, guys going to be 40!?  Off topic, sorry folks, move along.

I like how you're implying that Anal Cunt isn't a joke band.

Checking out some lucifugum and it is actually great. Good production, too.

That would be part of the joke.  And also my first thought upon hearing Impaled Northern Moonforest described thus.

Impaled northern moonforest? Well, they have their own, uh, distinctive sound. They also have interesting lyrics/song names...And you can't get much tr00er than an acoustic guitar, right?  :-)

THE MOST FROSTBITTEN BAND EVER.

They are as grim and frostbitten as the gay bars of which they sing.

Guys I like what I hear here:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=YKV9W7tLSR0&feature=related (http://youtube.com/watch?v=YKV9W7tLSR0&feature=related)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=-KN1sw7kBeA (http://youtube.com/watch?v=-KN1sw7kBeA)
Twilight is a super group composed of some of American true cvlt black metal's luminaries, including Malefic (Xasthur), Wrest (Leviathan) and others.

Also this myspace has all but the final track of Weakling's only album on it:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=155128694 (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=155128694)

And somewhere there was a page that had MP3's of some of the best of the San Francisco metal scene.  Leviathan, Hammers of Misfortune (not black metal but their first album has a shitload of tremelo picking, as well as some of the best metal album art ever) and Weakling.  But I can't find it.

I like Woods of Ypres, but damn their lyrics are silly. Maybe it's just that ALL BM lyrics are ridiculous and WoY's happen to be decipherable, but yeah. Silly.

Also I second everyone's Deathspell Omega recommendations. I feel like they're the closest thing to classical music the genre's birthed thus far- really complex arrangements, impressive compositional and technical skills, and oppressive as fuck. I am thinking specificially of Si Monumentum here.

Am I the only one who found Deathspell Omega to be boring? Whatever, I suppose.
