Title: Vespavenger
Post by: kattyc on 04 Mar 2008, 02:29
I was just wondering, does anyone have any idea what the Vespavenger is a reference to?
I was sort of thinking FLCL, but then again it could be anything. I'm not big on anime.

PS. Sorry this is so outdated, I'm sure the topic has come up before but I don't have the will power to look through 28 pages of threads.

Enlightenment lies within (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=740) (It's a few comics past that, but that sets it up.)

That's not her first appearance though.

Maybe this is it. (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=720)

Definitely probably maybe the first time she's mentioned. (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=685)

I think so. That's how I read it.

I'm pretty sure the Vespavenger design is taken directly from Fooly Cooly, although as far as we know she isn't an alien. Perhaps she modelled herself on Haruhara Haruko.

Quite possible, though she doesn't wail on guys with a guitar.

Short of the Vespa, she's a lot more like Paranoia Agent's Lil' Slugger in practice.

Sorry if I'm resurrecting the wrong Vespavenger thread, but I thought this was worth mentioning.  Apparently, there's a defense technology firm that's actually building a variant of her Vespa.

Here's a URL for an article about it:

Whatever it's a reference to, someone remade the website in reality.

That page would be better if the links actually worked.

I think Jeph made the Vespavenger site just to prevent someone else taking that name.  According to Alexa, that site was created and peaked in traffic at the same time Jeph was using that arc.

I'm reminded of an obscure FCC regulation that stipulates if you mention a fictional web domain on television or radio, you are responsible for the content of that domain.  Perhaps this applies to the internet too.  So if someone purchased vespavenger.com before Jeph made the site and after he showed the Coffee of Doom crew checking it out, then whatever they put on it is Jeph's responsiblity.  So if they put child porn on it, Jeph would be responsible for child porn.

I thought it might have derived from the song Patriarch on a Vespa by Metric, but the lyrics don't really match up with the character haha.  Metric is indie though, so it's not totally out there.

I don't care if she's a reference to anything, she's just plain awesome and I love her in a totally non-ironic way... And not because I want to ride a Vespa and unleash my not-so-inner Bitch either! *shakes head* No, definitely not...

Nothing to worry about here, it's only a single shot weapon with no practical way to reload while still moving, and is limited to firing only on a fixed frontal arc.

well that's why these were parachute-dropped in teams with one carrying ammunition, according to DEAR FREIND WIKIPOEDIA. The French army fires, misses, the Russian tanks just keep on going and when it's all over they have to trade in their Vespas for second-rate Volvo knockoffs made in Sverdlovsk or something.

Speaking of the VespAvenger arc, what do you think Dora is implying in panel one of strip 747?

Anybody else notice the "Shitty bar videogame" in the background with the blue screen of death?

I've noticed the SBG, of course, (How could I not, since he talks about it in the title of 676?) but I've never noticed the BSOD.  Very, very nice.

I'm liking these forums. That's the fourth or fifth subtle background detail reference I missed in my own QC reading I've learnt about today.

It's kinda like the special features/commentary on a DVD, you pick up much more than you did even watching it a couple of times in the cinema.

My god... now I want to make a game called Shitty Bar Game. Any chance you'll lend the rights to the name Mr. Jacques?
