Title: March Madness
Post by: BobJoeJim on 16 Mar 2008, 16:51
We haven't had a sports thread in a while, and I think the NCAA Tourney is a good excuse for one.  My team, Oregon, got a totally undeserved 9 seed when I was worried they might be on the wrong side of the bubble so I'm pretty pumped.  Is your team in?  (This discussion will get better on Thursday, obviously).

I'm pretty content with Wisconsin's 3-seed.  All the 2-seeds seem like they have a better track record except maybe duke, and they beat us soundly earlier this year.

Boise State is in for the first time since '94. I'm only interested because their performance last night in the conference championship was highly entertaining. 14th seed.

UK at #11 :-o  WTF!  I bleed blue but even I know that ain't right.  We should be a #13 at most.  Oh well we'll lose the second game and be done with it.

UNLV got an 8th seed in the Midwest conference.  I'm pumped.  Our win over BYU in the Mountain West conference was amazing.  Seriously, our season this year could not have been any more awesome.  Everyone counted us out at the beginning because we lack size and 5 of our 6 best shooters from last year left.  Two of our starters are walk-ons.

However, those two walk-ons happen to lead the Mountain West in two categories.

I'm not too worried about Kent State in the first round, but we'll have to face Kansas in the second.  I don't see us winning that match-up, even at my most optimistic.

We should have a Facebook bracket pool up for QC.  What do you guys say?

Post by: BobJoeJim on 16 Mar 2008, 20:13
I'm up for a bracket pool, sounds great!  I wouldn't write Kent off though, Narr, I think that's gonna be an excellent first round game that I'm very much looking forward to watching as an impartial observer.  I have it at the top of my list of games that I think "should be close".  And Boise's triple OT conference championship game to get in was awesome, gotta pull for them in the first round after that :)
Title: Re: March Madness

It's not that I'm writing Kent off so much as I'm confident that UNLV can win that match-up.  I've got faith in my team.

I was the only one at my entire college our in Virginia last year (which isn't saying much as there's only 750 kids there) that had UNLV progressing past the first round, let alone making it to the sweet 16.  I would probably do the same this year, but I just don't see Kansas losing to any of the other teams in the Midwest.

But hey, half the fun is watching your bracket fall apart because anything can happen, you know?  The NCAA tournament is probably the single most dramatic sporting event finale in any sport out there, I think, except for like the World Cup and the Olympics.

I'm not necessarily a fan, but I've lived in Vegas all my life, so seeing UNLV get into the tournament is always an interesting story to follow.
I don't particularly care for basketball, though. I'm much more of a NCAAF fan.
Ohio State, son!

I wish I had a bookie this year. one of the 13 seeds almost always upsets a 4 seed, and the odds on it are usually good enough to make laying a bet on all 4 13s a good idea.especially if your local team is a 4 seed.

Other than the 1st round, I don't much pay attention to the sport.

Rock Chalk, bitches.

But, really. They're going to win.

The Sooners got an underserved 6 seed. I was actually hoping for a seven, and we were also placed in the same freaking bracket as NC, Tennessee and Louisville. Crap. Plus, St. Joe's is probably the toughest 11 seed in the tourney. If our guards don't play well, we'll be extremely lucky to even make it to the second round.

Final Four predictions, anyone?

Kansas
North Carolina
Texas
UCLA

EDIT: Also really excited to see the Kansas State - USC matchup. The two best freshmen in the country head to head? Heck yes.

I never had an opinion about sports before, but Duke is so utterly reviled at UMD that so long as they don't win, I'll be thrilled.

My Final Four:
North Carolina
Stanford
Georgetown
UCLA

No Pac Ten bias here... I promise.

I'm in.  Whoooooooo!  Go Team!

My Final Four kinda differs from bracket to bracket, but I'll usually have North Carolina and Kansas in there.  Memphis, Texas, and Pitt in the South are possibilities.  And UCLA, Duke, and Xavier in the West.

No Pac Ten bias here... I promise.

As long as I'm never accused of Big XII bias, I'm okay with letting this one go.

Edit: Also, joined the group. Sounds like fun.
Title: Re: March Madness
Post by: DonInKansas on 19 Mar 2008, 03:11
Big XII bias would be worthless during March Madness, seeing as how no Big 12 team has won a national title in the conference's existence.

That changes this year, of course...20 year anniversary!

So,  UNLV is 29th in the nation and Kent St. is 30th.

I believe that'll be the closest game of the first round.  I CAN'T WAIT FOR THURSDAY OMFG

Are we using the associaton rules for transverse switching, or the league?

I'll play it safe and play Limehouse, remembering that in years where easter falls in March, Zone 2 is worth triple.

Blackwall to Shadwell, negating the Docklands Light Railway penalty with the triple points.
Title: Re: March Madness
Post by: Narr on 20 Mar 2008, 14:02
So far, so good.  3-0.  I doubt that lasts through today, but it's a better start than last year by a percent you can't calculate because you can't divide by 0.

GO REBELS!  I figured it would be a closer match up than it was, but we completely blew Kent St. out in the first half.  If UNLV can keep up the suffocating defense we've had going for us throughout the MWC tourny and this game against Kent St., we've got a legit shot to beating Kansas.  My bracket be damned, I want UNLV to go as far as possible.

Holy fuck that Belmont game was insane.  Is it possible for a #15 seed to choke?  Because I think they might have just done so...  Still, what a finish, my heart is still pounding.  It's about time we get a good game today.

Title: Re: March Madness
Post by: BobJoeJim on 22 Mar 2008, 04:34
LOL @ Tampa.  13, 12, 13, 12 all win?  Two OT games?  Seriously?  I love March.  Too bad Oregon played such a horrendous second half, that put a damper on the day for me, but overall it was still a pretty fun day of basketball.

My bracket is way weird though.  I only got 21/32 right in round one, but I have 15 of my Sweet 16 alive still.  They could all still get there (except Drake), they'll just have to do it by facing (mostly) different teams than I expected them to in the second round, lol.

Ok, that's it. I walk up the stairs, get a bus to St. Pancras, and then bugger off* to Paris.

That's one of the few upsets I called that actually happened.  :D

I'm happy.  That means my bracket might not actually lose (as horribly as I thought)

And my bracket has officially gone to Hell.  I lost three more Sweet Sixteen teams in yesterday's action.  UCLA, Stanford, and WSU all won, though, go Pac Ten!!!

Also, Duke/Belmont "highlights"... with puppets!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xMIzMiikQo

Well, my bracket is 100% done now.  I can't gain any more points.

Who would have guessed the first time in college basketball history all #1 seeds make it to the final four would result in two blowouts?
Title: Re: March Madness
Post by: RobbieOC on 05 Apr 2008, 23:16
Guys, Tyler Hansbrough gets every call from the refs. The only reason NC got back into that game, was because the refs let them.

Though, they made some pretty terrible calls both ways. Kansas should have won by 40.
Title: Re: March Madness
Post by: Narr on 06 Apr 2008, 14:13
I'll disagree with that.  Kansas was just not looking good in the first part of the second half.  They seemed confused and tired.  If you looked at the body language of everyone on the court, it was pretty apparent.

I'm excited for the finals.  It should be a good game.
