Title: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: tommydski on 06 Apr 2008, 04:01
The sun has finally made an appearance in the UK and I need some appropriately cheery tunes. The only problem is I don't have any music suitable for this weather! This is where you crazy kids come in. I am tasking anyone on this forum who wants to participate to make me a summer mixtape. The only restrictions are thus -

1) It must fit on one compact disc. Eighty minutes is the absolute ceiling and I recommend a bit less than that.
2) You must sequence and label all of the songs. The mix must be in MP3 format, condensed to an .rar file and uploaded to Mediafire for me to download.
3) No Pandering! You know what I like already but that isn't the point of this mix. I want to hear some tunes that I have never heard before. This is pretty easy because I never hear new music. I probably haven't heard most of the Indie/Pop albums released over the last ten years. I definitely haven't heard the hip hop or electronic albums either. Do not pick bands I already know and love!
4) No metal/industrial/goth/Mars Volta. I do not associate this music with summer! Try to keep it upbeat and fairly melodic.

The person who uploads the best mix will receive $100 worth of swag from American Apparel (http://americanapparel.net/) or Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/).

The winner will be announced during June - July. You have a long time to think about this! Take your time!

The sun has finally made an appearance in the UK

Hmm.  I woke up this morning (in Oxford) to find 5 inches of snow beneath the sun.

Likewise, here in Aberdeenshire it snowed all morning. Still, the sun is out now and has been all week.

Summer is on the way!

Did American Apparel give you the swag for free because you model for them?

How about $100?
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition

You'd just spend it on drugs.

The prize is non-negotiable! Get to work!

I'm torn between wanting to do the mix and not giving a shit about the prize.

If you win, give the voucher to a friend.

*facedesk* How do you do a summer mix without "Pacific Theme"?

I suggest people lose points for using songs with 'summer' in the title.

I'm only making it harder for myself!

Tommy lets be real here you should just give me the prize now because I am better at music than all these punk ass bustas and I mean like I am probabaly way better at fucking sick summetime music than they are.

Did you listen to that Lucky Soul record by the way?

No, I've never even heard of them. I am miserably behind the times.

You would probably stand a good chance of winning if you decide to make a mix.

Has American Apparel always been a softcore porn site?

Their advertising is really bad isn't it? I like their clothes though.

It's a shame I don't really wear american apparel.

I'd never really noticed their advertising before. I've been to the store in Toronto. My friend tried to get me to buy a t-shirt for my dog.

American Apparel is actually the creepiest company ever. There are hella reasons but I am way to drunk to explin them.

While it is true that Dov Charney is an odious man, there are aspects of his company that strike me as positive. Aside from the famed 'sweat-shop free' attitude, they pay their employees a decent wage and provide healthcare. They also support immigration reform, albeit for entirely selfish reasons. They are gradually using more environmentally-friendly materials such as organic cotton.

Their advertising is borderline seedy but my attitude to it is basically the same as it is towards Suicide Girls and the like. I don't particularly like the approach but I also don't feel comfortable with dictating what women (and indeed, men) choose to do in terms of employment. Maybe someone could walk the moral maze and show workings that suggest that sexual exploitation is better or worse than sweat-shops, I honestly haven't honed my sense of decency to the point whereby I can admit a preference.

Tommy, I want to make a mix, but I don't know if I have music you haven't heard. You are more musically rounded. Also .rar file? Huh?

just download winrar and it gives you a new button on the right click menu in windows. Hella simple.

I could attempt doing this, it might be a fun challenge, but could you consider a less shitty prize?
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: tommydski on 06 Apr 2008, 14:25
Okay, how about $100 on Amazon or American Apparel?

For reference, I will convert this currency amount for wherever the winner happens to live and round up to the nearest ten.

American Apparel is actually the creepiest company ever. There are hella reasons but I am way to drunk to explin them.

They may be creepy, but their t-shirts are comfy as hell.  I'm am wearing one right now.  It is my favorite t-shirt because it is so soft and fits me exactly the way I like my t-shirts to fit.
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: Chrasstor on 07 Apr 2008, 12:06
American Apparel has some pretty nice sweaters... Don't know if I'd wear much else from there, though.

Anyway, I'll participate if I have the time. I've been thinking of doing something like this for myself to be honest, 'cause I'm a spirngluvver. So two birds with one stone and what not.

Also, I know there's some stuff that I listen to that you don't... But, there will most definitely be a few songs you've heard, so whatever.
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: GenericName on 07 Apr 2008, 12:09
Well, I've begun the process of creating a mix. I have 19 preliminary songs and am now listening to each one, to weed out the weaker ones. I will then add 5 more and repeat the process. By June, you will have the perfect summer mix.
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: Thrillho on 07 Apr 2008, 12:28
1. Does the prize money include postage?

2. Do we get immediately disqualified if there's something on it you've heard before, or does it just mark us down?
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: tommydski on 07 Apr 2008, 12:42
1. I would pay any postage on top of whatever you choose as a prize.

2. It would only be marked down for persistent offences.
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition

Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: tommydski on 07 Apr 2008, 16:39
That is fine.

For reference, I am judging the mix as a whole. I will not be taking into account anything like post counts, date joined, personal relationships etc. You will be judged by your mixing alone!

Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition

It really sucks that a lot of the best songs I would want to put on a Summer Mix are M4A's from the Itunes store.

Oh wells, I can figure something good out.

Burn it to an actual CD and then import it again.
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: tommydski on 14 Apr 2008, 12:57
I guess m4a is also applicable then.

Obviously, I can play either but I didn't want to penalise other people who might want to listen to these mixes but don't have iTunes.
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: Kyros on 14 Apr 2008, 13:05
Burn it to an actual CD and then import it again.

This might also work.  If not I can always try and scour the internet for MP3's of the songs or something.

Worse comes to worse at least M4A's are applicable now!
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: GenericName on 14 Apr 2008, 16:12
Actually theyd be protected so no one besides you would be able to play them.

You have to do what Gemmwah said.
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: Lines on 15 Apr 2008, 08:08
Yeah, I've burned my buys from iTunes onto CDs and no one's had a problem copying them that way. It's only a problem (I think) when you do it electronically. So yeah, what Gemm said.

But I'm glad you're including m4a's now, because actually, most of my m4a's are from CDs I imported to my computer, as I don't really like buying from the iTunes store. (I want a physical copy with album art, not just sound.)
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: Caspian on 15 Apr 2008, 08:55
I'll give this a shot. I predict that my list will consist almost entirely of drone and shoegaze, but GOOD TIMES WILL BE HAD. I could use a summer mix for myself, actually, even if we've just finished it here.
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: De_El on 16 Apr 2008, 15:26
I want to think there would have to be more than just two mixes submitted for Tommy to warn us of their dazzling sheen. So were they PM'd? What the heck doods, sharing is caring.
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: tommydski on 16 Apr 2008, 15:50
Actually, the people who chose to PM them have a fair point in not wanting to be seen publicly sharing copyrighted material.

No shame in PMing but it would be nice to have them in this thread if you want to live dangerously!
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: De_El on 16 Apr 2008, 16:30
But...but kindergarten! But I suppose I can respect that. I live dangerously because I'm so used to it I forget there could potentially be repercussions.

This may seem like a stupid question for me to ask, considering the ridiculous amount of music I listen to, but what do you mean by 'sequenced'?  That the tracks are faded in and out of each other in one giant song file?
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: tommydski on 19 Apr 2008, 14:56
I mean that it must be very clear which order the songs are supposed to go in. You need to make sure you have changed the details of each track so their track number is the order it is in the mix, not the album it is on. Sequencing is key to a good mix. The winning mix will be well sequenced, I guarantee it.

I know this is going to come off like I'm just talking to hear myself talk, but seriously.  Are people really having a problem with this?

It's like holding a writing contest and then having to remind people that they need to use paragraphs and that they should organize their thoughts in a relatively coherent manner.
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition

Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition

No, he's right, that's why I felt stupid about asking it is because it was one of those things that just looked so obvious but I couldn't put a finger on what you meant.  Anyways, can I use a song that I want to use that has a different time than what it is?  It's says it's 28 minutes even though it's only 4 and a half.  If not, do you know of any programs that let me change that?  The rest of the album is like it, too.

I just can't resist a chance to make a mix CD, let alone one that can win me shit, so I signed up after lurking for a while. Here's my mix:

A few of the choices are pretty obvious but just fit too well not to include them. Only 1 track has the word summer in its title, but it really is one of the most summery songs on earth, and i balanced it out with a track by Snowman :P

Is it alright if I enter two?  I'm thinking about making another that's slightly more psychedelic than what I've got now, more stoner/post-rock stuff.    Not that my other one isn't summery, I just think the second one would be more to my tastes and may introduce you to some of the newer stoner music that's come out in the past few years.

Blame the drugs if you want, but nothing says summer to me more than lighting up on the back porch on a starry night and listening to some music quietly while talking to friends for a few hours.

Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: Dimmukane on 25 Apr 2008, 12:30
Yeah, it's not that I was pushing the time limit, it's that I thought a lot of the stoner stuff wouldn't gel as much with the other one.

'Us' is used as 'me' in the lexicon of certain regional dialects of English.

To my knowledge, the North of England and parts of Australia at least.

For reference, I will convert this currency amount for wherever the winner happens to live and round up to the nearest ten.

"Summer", to me, hints at playing, loving and losing, and just plain lazing about.

"And now for something completely different".  This is a poor fit for the rules, and for the usual taste of this community; the newest track is this year, one was recorded in 1904, and the oldest was written in the 13th century.  So what the hell - enjoy it or hate it, as you will.

Ok, I finally got around to picking songs and stuff.  I was at what was essentially an epic barbecue/friend's 21st birthday earlier this summer, and I tried to pick songs that kind of fit the occasion.  The first one is during the cookout/copious drinking, the second is after most of the people left and we were sitting on a chair swing with a joint, and the third is the next day, when everyone was recovering.

Just a heads-up, the last track in the second one did not have a song title.  Ever.  The band just named it the number it was on the LP.

"Summer", to me, hints at playing, loving and losing, and just plain lazing about.

This is the kind of sentiment I had in mind once I had a large selection of potential tracks and was looking to find some common factor by which to narrow it down. What I wound up with was my attempt at creating a conceptual album! It is based loosely on my experience of switching cities in the middle of one summer, and composed entirely of tracks that aren't mine! Isn't that crazy?

imagist42's The Hot Months: A Summer Mix

The Hot Months is (roughly) the tale of a wistful young man who has spent his life trying to find a life. He has reached a point in his life where, after trying everything he can from college to BASE jumping to discover some purpose beyond hanging out and having fun, he has settled into his quaint, old, and most importantly hot hometown for one last summer. After an initial bout of boredom, he discovers a nightlife hidden in the summer heat that he never knew--and along with it, an old flame. He and she do the whole courtship "thing" for a bit, but he ultimately finds that she wants a life vastly different from this comfortable, familiar one he has developed. She leaves, and the resulting fallout nearly destroys him and everything he has built up around him, until she returns for one last visit to help him come to terms with the fact that their fling wasn't exactly a stable relationship to begin with. In the process he realizes that he cannot stick around in the same old place forever, and as their last act together they head out of town in opposite directions, leaving nothing but shadows behind.

Holy crap is it a pretty awful concept and so many times during almost every song the lyrics don't fit at all but it sure was fun to put together.
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: imagist42 on 28 Jul 2008, 07:52
Sorry for the double post, but for anyone who's already downloaded my mix, I had to put up an updated version because the track numbering was a little wonky in iTunes (some tracks having "disc n of n" info in the tags put some tracks in a separate order before the real first track), and the album artwork didn't seem to import properly because WMP and iTunes don't like to play nice on that front. Should all be fixed, but just to be clear, "Army" should be the first track, and you should be looking at the above picture of a tree in a dead field (although that's not exactly a vital point to the mix).

Here's the new link (updated in the above post too):

Ten years ago the musically-minded members of this forum (who have mainly moved on) made "mixtape" compilations of their idea of summer music which they shared; hence this thread.

I was reminded of this because I just stumbled on a directory in which I seem to have preserved 22 of them!  Only three of the compilers are still active on the forum - me, and two others whom I won't identify because they have changed their user names (and one of those recently became mostly dormant).

My mix was naturally atypical in including largely classical music and recordings from as long ago as 1904!  Here it is (https://cassland.org/sounds/PaulSummerMix.zip).
Title: Re: Summer Mix Competition
Post by: Thrillho on 29 May 2018, 02:54
I'm guessing the one other active one is me?

edit: I did actually submit one! And apparently one edited into one long megamix, which I was doing a lot of at the time. I would really appreciate hearing my own mix, actually.

This post is a bit of a spectre, isn't it, hodgy? Reading Tommy's posts at all is incredibly strange for reasons not worth going into here, but just reading the overall tone of the forum at the time (holy fuck that 'schizos' post) and knowing this thread is actually immensely laid back by comparison to the general tone, especially for the music forum?

It would also seem nobody ever won this contest.
