I've never really been a big fan of pop culture parodies, but I have to say that casting Amy Poehler as the kid was a pretty funny decision.

I saw the movie, then saw the skit, then saw the movie again recently. It was much funnier when I was watching the movie the second time around and picturing the skit in my head.

It was funnier when it was more reminiscent of Monty Python's Flying Circus.
(The "NOOOOOOO! MY CHILD! NOOOOO!" part reminded me of a D.P. Gumby sketch from MPFC.)

The actual scene was a lot funnier than this sketch. The dude does a good Daniel Plainview, though.
To be fair, it's really not that hard of a voice to pull off, at least for somebody who can do voices.
It was pretty okay until All-Purpose Ethnic Fred Armisen came in with his pointless and pretty terrible Javier Bardem impression.

I laughed. A lot, and also silently, but I laughed. You see I am sitting in a computer lab right now, so hysterical laughter wouldn't go over too well.

Am I the only person who found that painfully unfunny? I've seen SNL four or five times and I can honestly say that I've never found anything they've done funny at all. And honestly...making fun of the language used in Juno has never been funny...ever.

Of the stuff that I've seen which has been in the past 5 years. I haven't seen any of the early stuff when most people tell me they were still amazing.

That's fair.
They have done some exceptional stuff and some really crappy stuff. Considering they've been doing it for so long, that kind of makes sense. If all you've seen is the last several years, I guess I can understand that. I haven't really seen it in about five years or so, so I can't really say how the stuff you've seen compares.

SNL has been good the last couple of years. The new blood has talent.

The new kids definitely do have some chops, and are bringing new energy and ideas to the show. Except Kenan Thompson. The only really funny bit he does is "Deep House Dish". THAT is funny. But Bill Hader has a good range of impressions, Andy Samberg is funny and very creative, and Kristen Wiig rounds out well; she's pretty versatile in terms of fitting in a number of different types of sketches. Will Forte is a really strong addition to the cast as well - you can't look at a Tim Calhoun bit and tell me that's not funny. I just wish they'd get Maya Rudolph back, she was really great.
The 'Digital Shorts' are usually pretty inventive and outside the box for SNL, which is nice to see. They're also where Andy Samberg gets to shine - see classics like "Lazy Sunday" and "Dick in a Box".
I'm not saying it's all roses - it's still tough to watch an entire 90 minutes all the way through sometimes, and it is still pretty hit-and-miss, but I think they're doing fine and are on their way up.
With the Milkshake sketch... I think Will Forte makes it for me. I seriously had that theme song in my head for two straight days, it's hilarious. Plus, the old man bit works really well in this sketch!. And of course, Hader's impression (especially his voice!) was dead-on, and he was awesome!

I have to agree, though, I think Will Forte is one of my favorite new people. His impression of Tim Calhoun was hilarious (here (http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/play.shtml?mea=229102)) and so was his dancing when Peyton Manning hosted. Kristen Wiig is my other favorite new person because her characters always make me laugh.

If you haven't seen There Will Be Blood, you wouldn't. It's towards the end of the movie.

Maybe random in that calculated, fake-spontaneous way that the word is for some reason now exclusively used to mean, but otherwise no the humor in that sketch is pretty straight.
I maintain that it was alright for SNL (premise actually had a lot of potential, and a great Daniel Day-Lewis impression), but that they should have done something more than "here are three things he said in the movie." Good god it's not like constructing actual jokes is difficult when you're dealing with a 3 hour film that is essentially a cheat sheet of character traits & relationships.
Also if there is anything worse than Juno dialogue it is parody Juno dialogue.

I mean there's always kind of a surprise reaction to seeing a wacky crossover, but "popular film character interacts with other popular film character" is not reaching very far into absurdity

Kristen Wiig is my favourite person on SNL ever. Example (http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/play.shtml?mea=237294&dst=nbc|widget|NBC%20Video&__source=nbc|widget|NBC%20Video) from a couple weeks ago. The Christopher Walken episode was pretty awesome all the way through.
Maya is taking time off because she is having a baby. I dunno if she will be back or not, though. I know Amy is leaving after this season :(

I too found this dreadful and unfunny. The guy doing Plainview was OK but not as spot-on as the comments led me to believe. Why was Chigur blatantly Hispanic? Why, oh why, do people insist on always doing the most abysmally unfunny riffs on pop culture?

That's Lorne Michaels for you. Aside from maybe those first few years (out on DVD and interesting, if not always hilarious, to watch) SNL has coasted on catchphrases and recurring characters. Today's "airport ladies" (I last watched SNL a few years ago, they may very well have axed that sketch) are indistinguishable from the Making Copies Guy or the Church Lady. Which is why I and many others prefer more esoteric comedy shows like Monty Python and Mr. Show. I mean, it's telling that Mr. Show's weakest sketch was the only recurring one (Ronnie Dobbs).
SNL is at its best when it has a talented host who attacks what the writers give him/her. Alec Baldwin and Christopher Walken are the best examples. Recently the Rock has been a great host. John McCain was surprisingly self-deprecating, if not exactly born for comedy. I hear good things about Payton Manning, which is odd considering athlete hosts tend to be stiffer than most.
As far as Maya Rudolph goes, I always got the impression that she has two comic modes - "loud" and "singing".

I didn't see the origin, so I saw that clip and didn't find it that funny.
Then I saw the original (from The OC) and laughed my head off. Man, I am glad I haven't ever tried to watch that show up until now.

Probably because the character Anton Chigur is, in fact, Mexican. Just a guess.

Adding to that, I'm not even sure if his nationality is discussed in the book at all, it might be, i'll have to give it another read.

I really didn't think anything in the movie the fact led me to believe that he was mexican, other than that the story takes place near the border, and he's kinda foreign-looking. Anton Chigurh isn't a very Mexican name. And Javier Bardem is Spanish anyways.

I agree that the show is on an upswing. Kristen Wiig is absolutely hilarious, and Hader, Samberg, Forte, and Sudeikis are all really solid. Amy Poehler is also great, even if the format of the show disallows her talents to be played to their full potential.
The show's quality has fluctuated up and down over the years. Anyone who thinks the show has had this sudden decline since the early 00's should really watch some episodes from the early to mid 80's. Eesh.

Well, the nationality of the actor means absolutely nothing. It's like saying Dr. House isn't American just because Hugh Laurie is British.
But *shrug* if he's not Mexican, then he's not Mexican. There's no hard evidence that he's not, but I guess nothing definite that says he is either. Either way, still a fairly interesting character.

Javier Bardem wasn't in There Will Be Blood...was he? I thought that was No Country For Old Men.

Yes, that was No Country for Old Men. But they used the character at the end of the SNL skit, so maybe that's why he was brought up? But I don't see what the big deal about the nationality of the character is. He had an obscure accent, didn't have a hispanic name, and it was never addressed in the first place in the film. (Haven't read the book yet.)

I read the book before I saw the movie, and after finishing it, I was under the impression that Chigurh looked like Powers Boothe (of all people).

The point is that Fred Armisen's Anton Chigurh impression was more Chevy Chase than Darryl Hammond.

That was awful. That was one of those sketches that was painfully awkward to watch because it was so bad. My stomach got all knotted and achy. I mean, it was bad enough in the beginning when I basically knew what was coming, but the actual execution was terrible and awkward and kinda tripped over itself. And then Anton Chigurh showed up, and I exited the window after hearing the first few words coming from Armisen's mouth. SNL needs to die. It is no longer funny or original.
Also, for the record, The Coen Brothers wanted Anton Chigurh to look and sound like he came from outer space, not from Puerto Rico. The nationlessness of Chigurh was created intentionally to eradicate prejudices and make the reader look closely at Chigurh's individual actions and judge from there.

He was actually pretty darn funny. There's a skit, where he and Will Forte dance to the theme of the 1960s Casino Royale spoof, written by Burt Bacharach, that left me in tears.
