Title: Sloan
Post by: Joseph on 22 Apr 2008, 12:19
So, there's been a fair load of discussion about the band Sloan around these boards lately.  They've released a large number of fantastic power-pop albums over the past decade in a half, showing remarkable consistency over the course of their career.  Since this discussion has been pretty sprawling, creating side discussions in a decent number of topics, I figured maybe the band deserved a thread of their own.

And what better time could there be for one, as Sloan's latest album, Parallel Play, is available for streaming here:

I actually went and procured the Sloan album One Chord to Another after reading all the talk of Sloan in various threads the past week or so.  I'm really enjoying it and I went and found Never Hear the End of It too.

Right.  I forgot to mention that all the discussion has been about how disliked they are.

I think their chances at American success were severely hindered by writing a song about Nirvana's bass player owing one of them $20.

Patrick Pentland looks like the sort of person I'd quite like to fight.

Something about him just takes me there.

This band is terrible!  So bad, in fact, I am going to have to stream that album when I get home tonight.

I hear Chris Murphy is a Billy Corgan-level douchebag to the rest of the band.

I mean listen to that part on the Party Album where he goes "Patrick, get in tune, please."

This one time I was listening to Sloan in an elevator, loud enough for a cute Canadian girl standing next to me to identify it.  She beat me to within an inch of my life with a hockey stick.  I haven't listened to them since.

Sloan has gotten me laid by so many Canadian art-school chicks.

The key is to say you like Andrew's songs the best.  Chicks are suckers for "People of the Sky".

Chicks are a sucker for Andrew.

Personally I want to be friends with Chris Murphy.

I sure don't. His band sucks.

'Underwhelmed' is a shitty song and he wears stupid glasses.

I want to be friends with him so I can tell him to break up the band. I figure the best way to do it is from the inside.

Later, I would cut his hair while he slept. It looks dumb.

I hate the first song on the album so much I'm going to keep listening to it. I guess I'm just a sucker for organs.

The new album is another failure in a long line of failures.

They should seriously consider capital punishment for this shit.

People should just listen to Weezer and Green Day instead.

Sloan.....I know them.....I think it's probably just because we're both Canadian.  I've probably heard there songs a bunch of times and honestly I can't remember any of them.  I know that I don't like them though, although I don't know why.....it's probably because whenever I switch on the radio in the morning I get to hear about how Sloan is just an amazing band.....by DJ's who think that Slipknot is really hardcore.

Another bit of chronic stupidity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9s0R1UbxUQ) from the catalogue of errors this awful band has inflicted on us all.

Man Tommy if you thought that song was bad you should get a load of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygejqgBm9l0) fucking trash

NotAFan, the band with the TV yellow LP and the faded yellow SG with Vibrola is Taylor and the Roughs, not Sloan. That CompStang bass is totally Sloan though.

I thought all you bastards would like to know that I was at a warehouse sale for a local independent book/CD shop yesterday and I saw some album called Never Hear the End of It by this band called Sloan on sale for $2.50 and I thought "That's one of those bands all those bastards on the forum are always banging on about" so I bought it.

I thought all you bastards would like to know that I bought an album just because of you.

Power-pop isn't really my favourite genre but it's pretty good I guess.

Sloan to release new album, The Double Cross, in May this year. (http://www.outside-music.com/news.php?id=149)

There's a link to the lead-off track Follow the Leader, a Chris tune. Struck me as a better-written version of "All I Am Is All You're Not". I shudder to think how bad Patrick's songs are gonna be on this one (although he gets a pass for Parallel Play, his on that one were actually pretty alright).

This year is officially my favorite music year.

My sister's bf has XM in his car and yesterday when we were driving to the city, that single they randomly put out in 2009 ("take it upon yourself") came on. I had never heard it before, but I was just like, "oh FUCK YEAH, SLOAN, THIS IS SO AWESOME! I hope they put out a new album this year." Then I find this out the next day. Such good vibes right now

I've kind of warmed to most of Patrick's recent songs aside from the execrable 'Listen To The Radio' and 'HFXNSHC' on Never Hear The End Of It and at least he had the excuse of going through a divorce etc. I've always liked Action Pact and his tracks on the last album were samey but decent.

Incidentally, he has a very wordy blog on a Canadian music website here (http://dischord.inmusic.ca/), though it is unfortunately named and the heading photo makes him look like a penis. It is informative and funny though. For example, on the latest Sloan recording sessions -

Quote
Over the years we've found that, since we all write and sing our own songs, it's more efficient and fun to have each songwriter be in control of their respective songs. We all play guitar, and our songs are generally guitar driven, so the foundation of any given song is a guitar track, usually played by the member whose song is being recorded. It gives the song a unique "Patrickness" or "Jayness" (these being members of the band) from the get-go: a Jay Ferguson song sounds like a Jay Ferguson song because he plays the guitar a certain way, just as I have my own aesthetic, and the other two have theirs' (their names aren't important). If I were to start laying down screaming leads all over a Jay song, 15 year old indie-rock girls all across the country would choke on their retainers. Similarly, if Jay added jangly 12 string guitar parts all over one of my tunes, 40 year old IT techs would spit-take their morning coffees all over their cubicles.

I guess it would be uncool of me to say that I think Sloan are pretty sweet.
Unless if all this conversation is ironic, then I hate them.
Man, I guess I'll never hear the end of it either.

I gave my best friend a worn copy of One Chord to Another sophomore year of high school. I think this act might done irreparable damage to our friendship that has slowly come undone in the years hence. Also, I'm dating his ex-girlfriend. I don't know why I felt the need to bring that up.

New record promo stuff on the website now (http://www.sloanmusic.com/).

It's called The Double Cross or XX, playing on that whole thing about it being the tenth record.

It's more of the same but that's not a bad thing when it comes to Sloan. There's a touch more in terms of dressing on each track and I think it hangs together better than the last one for the most part. Murph's songs are better on this one, Pat's are a bit worse. Seems like a lottery with those two now, though Andrew and Jay's songs are as good as ever.
