So, there's been a fair load of discussion about the band Sloan around these boards lately. They've released a large number of fantastic power-pop albums over the past decade in a half, showing remarkable consistency over the course of their career. Since this discussion has been pretty sprawling, creating side discussions in a decent number of topics, I figured maybe the band deserved a thread of their own.
And what better time could there be for one, as Sloan's latest album, Parallel Play, is available for streaming here:

I actually went and procured the Sloan album One Chord to Another after reading all the talk of Sloan in various threads the past week or so. I'm really enjoying it and I went and found Never Hear the End of It too.
-
I don't like them.
-
Atrocious band. I'd never see them live in a million years.
-
"Sloan is nobody's favorite band." - Pitchfork magazine
*checks my last.fm page*
Oh shi...
-
Right. I forgot to mention that all the discussion has been about how disliked they are.
-
I think their chances at American success were severely hindered by writing a song about Nirvana's bass player owing one of them $20.
-
Patrick Pentland looks like the sort of person I'd quite like to fight.
Something about him just takes me there.
-
This band is terrible! So bad, in fact, I am going to have to stream that album when I get home tonight.
-
I hear Chris Murphy is a Billy Corgan-level douchebag to the rest of the band.
I mean listen to that part on the Party Album where he goes "Patrick, get in tune, please."
-
This one time I was listening to Sloan in an elevator, loud enough for a cute Canadian girl standing next to me to identify it. She beat me to within an inch of my life with a hockey stick. I haven't listened to them since.
-
Sloan has gotten me laid by so many Canadian art-school chicks.
The key is to say you like Andrew's songs the best. Chicks are suckers for "People of the Sky".
-
Chicks are a sucker for Andrew.
Personally I want to be friends with Chris Murphy.
-
I sure don't. His band sucks.
'Underwhelmed' is a shitty song and he wears stupid glasses.
-
I want to be friends with him so I can tell him to break up the band. I figure the best way to do it is from the inside.
Later, I would cut his hair while he slept. It looks dumb.
-
Way to be 17 years too late.
-
I hate the first song on the album so much I'm going to keep listening to it. I guess I'm just a sucker for organs.
-
The new album is another failure in a long line of failures.
They should seriously consider capital punishment for this shit.
People should just listen to Weezer and Green Day instead.
-
Come on guys, Sloan aren't that bad. That Buddy Holly song of theirs is pretty catchy.
-
i liked the one about the island in the sun. had a nice feel to it.
-
Does that mean you hate it :?
-
Sloan.....I know them.....I think it's probably just because we're both Canadian. I've probably heard there songs a bunch of times and honestly I can't remember any of them. I know that I don't like them though, although I don't know why.....it's probably because whenever I switch on the radio in the morning I get to hear about how Sloan is just an amazing band.....by DJ's who think that Slipknot is really hardcore.
-
Look at these pictures of these stupid people and their lame instruments and them playing them lamely. (http://picasaweb.google.com/chris.casuga/SloanWTaylorLockeAndTheRoughsHIJKSlimSSanFranciscoCA2192010#)
-
Sloan may be lame, but that mustang bass ain't. Neither are their SGs nor their LP juniors.
-
Man Tommy if you thought that song was bad you should get a load of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygejqgBm9l0) fucking trash
NotAFan, the band with the TV yellow LP and the faded yellow SG with Vibrola is Taylor and the Roughs, not Sloan. That CompStang bass is totally Sloan though.
-
Also Chris where the FUCK are the photos of that black Rickenbacker
-
I'm definitely not not talking about my most played album (according to last.fm) on freshair.org.uk which is definitely not Action Pact at all in about half an hour.

I thought all you bastards would like to know that I was at a warehouse sale for a local independent book/CD shop yesterday and I saw some album called Never Hear the End of It by this band called Sloan on sale for $2.50 and I thought "That's one of those bands all those bastards on the forum are always banging on about" so I bought it.
I thought all you bastards would like to know that I bought an album just because of you.
Power-pop isn't really my favourite genre but it's pretty good I guess.

You dicks are making me remember that shitty band again, and now I'll want to play their crap because of all the awful memories. It's like bad movie night except Sloan is the Star Wars' Christmas Special and ohgodthealcoholdoesntmakeitanybetter.

Sloan to release new album, The Double Cross, in May this year. (http://www.outside-music.com/news.php?id=149)
There's a link to the lead-off track Follow the Leader, a Chris tune. Struck me as a better-written version of "All I Am Is All You're Not". I shudder to think how bad Patrick's songs are gonna be on this one (although he gets a pass for Parallel Play, his on that one were actually pretty alright).
-
This year is officially my favorite music year.
My sister's bf has XM in his car and yesterday when we were driving to the city, that single they randomly put out in 2009 ("take it upon yourself") came on. I had never heard it before, but I was just like, "oh FUCK YEAH, SLOAN, THIS IS SO AWESOME! I hope they put out a new album this year." Then I find this out the next day. Such good vibes right now

Damn that thing looks tiny in the hands of that enormous moose. I actually thought it was a guitar before I realised it was one of those "shortscale" thingemejigs. Turrible.
-
I shudder to think how bad Patrick's songs are gonna be
WHOA MAN. WHOA.
-
I guess it would be uncool of me to say that I think Sloan are pretty sweet.
Unless if all this conversation is ironic, then I hate them.
Man, I guess I'll never hear the end of it either.
-
I gave my best friend a worn copy of One Chord to Another sophomore year of high school. I think this act might done irreparable damage to our friendship that has slowly come undone in the years hence. Also, I'm dating his ex-girlfriend. I don't know why I felt the need to bring that up.
-
I liked "Unkind" for the same reason I jammed on "Witch's Wand" from the last album--it sounds like ABBA.
-
I fucking love ABBA.
-
SLOOOOOO AAAAAANNN.
I love this year
