I have only just started playing pokemon recently, starting with diamond on my DS. I once spent 2 hours playing it on the bus and was simultaneously happy and depressed. It is a strange experience!
I may or may not be naming my pokemon after people on the forums.

But yeah, Level 0 Missiingno turns into Kanghaskhan when it hits level 1

Basically, it's a linear game and all of the Pokemon aren't going to be awesome against everything and some of the early obtainable Pokemon are going to be weaker.

Dude, Theme Park! At least the one i used to play, which was technically called MacTheme Park, was full of epic win. I could make the millions in that game, and then move to Greenland, where my park would completely and utterly fail. My favorite part about it was that if you got too far into the red you'd commit suicide in a cutscene.
