Over the past few days I've been rediscovering my love for fast hardcore. I never stopped liking this music and certain bands such as Charles Bronson and DS-13 have remained in rotation, I was even playing bass in a fast hardcore band not so long ago. But It's been a long time since I dug out records by bands like Das Oath, I Shot Cyrus, I Quit!, What Happens Next?, Voorhees, Urko, Long Live Nothing etc. It used to be such a staple of my musical diet as well, but since I have so much of it when looking for new music I would always be investigating something like emo, grime or dubstep instead of yet another band in this style. That endless search for new music to listen to led me to forget about some of the great records I already owned, which is a shame because these bands are loaded with passion and energy. It's raw, uncompromised, intelligent and everything that made me fall in love with DIY.
So the point of this thread is that I was wondering what music other people had this experience with. Bands or styles that slipped from your mind for a good long while only to come back with a vengeance. If so, why did they go away? What is it about them that pulled you back again, and is it different the second time around? Alternatively, do you never experience this and either something stays with you or it's gone for good?

The drawback of have a shitton of music is that eventually, provided you interests in music aren't totally static, you'll forget about some of it. For my part, it's been a really long time since I listened to Thunderbirds are Now! but I found one of their CDs rummaging through crap in my room the other day. I also kind of forgot about Ratatat for a while , but then their new albums were announced so I went back and listened to the s/t. Damn! So good.
I think it was just the expansion of my musical territory that left me without sufficient troops to defend these bands from the encroaching darkness on the edges of my memory. Is this a dumb metaphor? YES.

I've got a ton of stuff on my computer laying dormant since I deleted the sound-driver, and pretty much every track I've ever loved that isn't commited to solid copy has been forgotten and abandoned...

I forgot about the Libertines...but yesterday I was rocking Up the Bracket for the first time since high school. It's still pretty fun.
For awhile I had forgotten about Sleater-Kinney.

I totally forgot about ...And The Circus Leaves Town because of how awesome Welcome To Sky Valley is. I have recently remembered that Circus is almost as good as Sky Valley - and I haven't already played it to oblivion, as per Sky Valley.
Also, I tend to forgot about the popular bands in my quest for more music. The more I push onto new musical frontiers, the more I forget about where I came from - which is why I don't listen to bands like Pink Floyd or AC/DC as much as I probably should.

Oh man, I totally forgot about the Green Pajamas until now. They've been doing the psychedelic pop thing (think Olivia Tremor Control, Flaming Lips) since 1984 and are still at it and still amazing. Definitely check them out. They have like 20 albums. All Clues Lead to Meagan's Bed and In a Glass Darkly are two of the best.

I'd forgotten about Mission of Burma's Signals Calls and Marches till I started humming Fame and Fortune to myself on a whim.

I'm basically in a constant cycle where I don't listen to Metallica for 6 months, thrash them furiously for a month, then don't listen to them for 6 months and so on.

We have semi-frequent discussions about Tim Taylor's lyrics. Half the time it's impossible to work out what he was saying but you still want to sing along.
Really? I can tell what he was singing. At least, I think I can. I never thought of him as that incoherent, anyhow.

i used to listen to ...and the circus leaves town quite a bit, it's blues for the red sun that i've forgotten about.

Man, The Offspring used to be my favorite band in the world in my angst-ridden 13-15 year old days. Then I matured and stopped listening to them completely. Lately though I've been putting on some of their CDs while working out. I find the lyrics to be horrendously cheesy now, but the music is still infectious and energetic.

They're not the greatest band lyrically, but I think there's something pure and, not child-like, but teenage, about the lyrics to 'Want You Bad.'

I picked up a copy of Gish by Smashing Pumpkins a few weeks back...hadn't heard it in oh, 10 years?
Amazing. The album is still stellar and beautiful.

I just remembered I used to have this album by a pop-punk band from Richmond, Virginia called Race the Sun. They had a pretty short running, but they put out a fantastic record called The Rest of Our Lives Is Tonight and it holds a soft spot in my heart for pop punk to this day.
It is seriously awesome.

Amazing. The album is still stellar and beautiful.
Much like early Aerosmith redeems their more recent shit, the first two Smashing Pumpkins albums are reason enough for the band to have existed, even if they have degenerated in horribleness.

Castor and the Jazz June. I dug 'em out last night after a discussion with my gal. The Jazz June is still great, while Castor was scratched whilst moving and will no longer play. I need to find "Tracking Sounds Alone" again. Love Garber's voice.

I frequently forget about Audioslave. They started me on a long journey of music that has landed me somewhere completely unrelated to where I started but it's always cool to hear them in a bar or club occasionally. :)

I was really into Sloan between about 12-14ish, I stopped listening to them when I got into hardcore because...I don't really know. I guess because I figured any music that wasn't hardcore was inherently fake. A fast forward almost 10 years later and I'm checking out their videos on YouTube and oh my god was I an idiot.
Great great rock band, Navy Blues is a seriously terrific rock album and I can't believe I convinced myself otherwise.

Sloan is a band you just do not fuck with. Aside from two semi-weak albums their whole discography shows a nice range from shoegaze to AC/DC style riffage and damn, can those kids write the tunes.

after hetfield cut his hair and lost his metal powers and they bretrayed fans with saint anger i refuse to call them metallica, post haircut hetfield stuff is referred to by me and my metalhead friends as Metallico.
I've filled the hole left in my metal heart with Megadeth, the band started by the guy who was too metal for metallica to handle and was started for the express purpose of revenge after they told him to fuck off and tossed him on a bus.
