This literally made me cry tears of joy, it caught me completely off guard. Four and a half minutes of pure, perfect win.
This can be the thread for happy things that make you cry, or the thread about travel, or the thread about dancing with strangers, or whatever ... I don't care what the thread turns into, people just need to see this.
-
I thought this was a thread about me for a minute. :-(
-
Edited for clarification.
-
The best one was "Demilitarized Zone, Korea" with special mention to the one in India. Pretty cool.
-
Oh my god, this was fantastic. I love these videos and this one was no exception. Frickin' awesome.
-
Today was looking to be a shitty day. But this makes up for it entirely.
Also good to see the Olympic Fountains downtown are still working. I haven't gone to play in them yet this summer at all.
-
It's really interesting to me, these videos. I think they're cute, and that's the consensus around here, it seems, but all the other internet places I've been seem to think this guy is a total douchebag. An antipathy towards tourists, maybe?
-
The weightlessness bit was pretty cool.
As for him being a douchebag, I don't see how that would work. He just goes places and dances.
-
He just goes places and dances.
yeah, but he goes to ALL the places you wish you could go. and dances.

That bastard!
-
Maybe people are reacting to the fact that he dances like an idiot? I think the stupid dance works well for this purpose though (it's easily recognizable, and just about anyone can do it,) and figure he's maybe doing it that way on purpose.

Agreed!
-
Wow. This is one of the single best things ever.
Also of note, has anyone seen the 2006 version?
Indiana Jones fans should recognize one of the locations he's dancing in.
-
I found that the point is not how he dances, or where he dances, or why he's there, but that everyone's dancing with him. I figured it was just going to be a "look at me, I've seen lots of cool places with pretty scenery!" video, but when crowds of people started joining in I just got the biggest chills ever and I'd basically broken up by the halfway point of the video.
The back-to-back Israel and West Bank shots were probably my favorite, although the Papua New Guinea one was pretty awesome.
-
The New Guinea one was totally awesome.
-
That was a great video. The fact that he got a gum company to pay for all of that is amazing. I'd dance like an idiot on the internet just to get to go to Iceland, not to mention everywhere else he got to see.
-
onewheel, that's how I felt too. When it was just him alone, I was chuckling a bit, but thinking that it was just going to be him making a fool of himself. But when crowds of other people joined in, I don't know, it felt affirming of..something in some way.
That's ludicrously vague and poorly written, but I'm not even sure of what exactly I felt, so it's hard to describe it.
-
-Demilitarized Zone, Korea
That did it for me.
Neat video.
-
It really was a really touching video.
-
Ah, AWESOME!
Also, the bit where they took him up into one of them weightlessness flights. Man. Its just epic awesome!
*Always gets a good feeling whenever he sees the Matt videos :D*

Wonderful! Even the French danced with him.
-
I think these videos are awesome. But I somehow feel the whole thing is a bit ridiculous. Maybe because what he is doing is so not amazing. Anyone can dance in exotic places and the thing is, he doesn't do it with any sort of 'thing' in mind. It's not a statement and it's not even really an investigation/experiment.
He's just a guy who danced, and went to some company and asked for funding to dance some more. So basically a company pays him to go around dancing for 'funsies'. I don't blame them, it's a great idea. The numa numa guy was amazing, but where was that really going? "Numa Numa 2 - Now with more fatties!".
He's doing something that can be explorative and go places, he's friendly looking and has universal appeal, it's also not that complicated! It really isn't more than just "a dude who dances on the internet". And while I'm okay with that, I mean comeon, I could do that. Maybe I should ask someone to send me places?
-
He's been doing it for a while now, though. I'm pretty sure this is his first time getting sponsored to do it. All the other times I think it was mostly out of his pocket. And now he's getting the people who watched his videos to participate. You're right, it's not all that amazing, but he's the only person who actually went through with it, which maybe says something about us.
-
Actually, not exactly (http://www.wherethehellismatt.com/about.shtml).
The response to the first video brought Matt to the attention of the nice people at Stride gum. They asked Matt if he'd be interested in taking another trip around the world to make a new video. Matt asked if they'd be paying for it. They said yes. Matt thought this sounded like another very good idea.
I'm pretty sure this is a reference to the afore-mentioned video of him before 2005 on his own travels, and long before his first 'dancing trip'.
-
Whatever.
Stop raining on our parade!

:-D

The first time i watched the video it actually made me feel these chills inhappy way, Its like, wtf whatever, i'm a happy guy and all what I DO is go places, and film myself dancing. But after heading to his website and reading about this, it doesn't feel as good anymore. Is it actually possible for somebody to just have fun doing good around the world? Or must there always be some form of commercial venture?
-
I would like to be his camera person. That is all there is to say.
-
This was great. The Demilitarized zone was great.
Also, I totally geeked out at the DC one cause me and my friend play at that fountain all the time.

I swear, people need to stop harassing me all the time. I mean, shit, I'll do it, but it won't be as impressive as Matt's. Just because I don't pay for flights doesn't mean I can just hop up and fly wherever at the drop of a hat. Geez.
-
wtf katie
-
the way i see it, if you ignore the gum sponsor part, it's a video that shows how dancing - even a really stupid dance - is recognized almost anywhere in the world, no matter how radically different the culture is from ours, as something really fun and wonderful that brings people together. come on that is beautiful.
-
On the one hand, this is one of those things that you look at and go, "Wow, I could have thought of that."
On the other hand, he did think of that, and he went out and did it, and what he did was expose the world for the culturally and geographically diverse marvel that it is in an unbelievably concise way. I'm trying to think of something else that could accomplish this but nothing is coming to me offhand.
It's a great idea that became a great video. Salut, this guy!
-

Don't belittle yourself by believing anything you could have thought of to be unimpressive!
-
wtf katie
sarcasm

This and the boom-de-yadda ad for the Discovery Channel have been making me very happy for the past two days. It's when everyone joins in that it gets happifying. It made me sorta cry. Also, I think that one of the Dublin dancers was in my class.
-
Hold on, this guy is the guy who came up with Destroy All Humans? Wow, don't that beat all. And the other game he was talking about sounded a whole lot like Super Monkey Ball. (referring to his lecture)
-
Are you posting in the right thread?
-
I've been busy, damnit!
-
Now that you're here.
DANCE!!!
-
Matt.
Matt, Matt, Matt.
I was in Chicago for a whole day and you were "too busy" to come hang out. I ended up spending it napping on Joe's couch.
This is not acceptable.
-
In all fairness, it was a weekday. People with jobs don't get the summer off like you crazy kids. The only reason I could even hang out with you for breakfast is because Tuesdays and Thursdays I work from home.
-
It's okay, I really did need the naps.
-
"This video is unavailable"
-
It's working for me.
-
Not only do I have a full-time job, I am working towards my MBA in the evening. I have class on Monday and Tuesday evenings. I leave my condo at 8.30am and do not return until 10.00pm (on average). All I want to do upon my return is have a few stiff drinks and go to bed.
I am sorry that I was unable to hang out with you, Liz. Next time, though!
-
Next summer we are meeting up in Chicago.
You will not be able to escape.
-
The guy who slips and falls in one of the first group shots is definately an example of what I would do.
-
That was awesome. I'm such a loser, I keep looking for people I know. Haha.
