Title: This is a joke. This is a MOTHERFUCKING JOKE.
Post by: Tehz on 25 Jun 2008, 20:01
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disaster_movie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disaster_movie)

That's right, from the people behind such cinematic masterpieces as Epic Movie, Date Movie and Meet the Spartans comes...DISASTER MOVIE.

How the fuck are the even allowed to still make these?

They're really cheap to make and debut during months in which nothing of note is premiering, such that even just that small percentage of people with bad sense who think "well, there's nothing else out" will turn the waste a film a modest profit.

Oh what the fuck.  I mean, it's gonna be out in two months, and half the movies it's parodying came out in the last 60 days (Iron Man, Sex and the City, Incredible Hulk) and/or still aren't out yet (Hancock).  Seriously, even though this was to be expected, this is still a fuckin' travesty.  As far as I can tell, there's a comet, and that's as far as the 'disaster' goes.  In all seriousness, I would much rather watch Manos, The Hands of Fate than this tripe.  Did you see the FX they used to squash Iron Man?  It's like they're not even trying.  You would think that they intentionally weren't, yet those two (Seltzer and Freidberg) are quick to mention that they both wrote on Scary Movie at the beginning of every promo reel.  And a fucking cow?  I've never had the urge to kill someone for crimes against decency and common sense more than I do right now.

Man, I am ten kinds of furious and need to take a break from the internet for now.

I don't blame ya, bro. Bullshit on this level gets me fired up.

I think I wanna sneak into this when it comes out just to ruin the experience for everyone else who's there to seriously watch it. Who's with me? We can start a national campaign, get hundreds and hundreds to join in.

That's all well and good but what I'd really like to see is "Cult Classic Movie"

In "Cult Classic Movie," Friedberg and Seltzer make another dumb genre picture in the same no jokes, just pop culture references style, but use only films that legitimate cinema geeks are reeeeeeeeally attached to. E.G. films by Robert Altman, Andrei Tarkovsky, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Andrzej Zulawski, Michael Haneke, (the unpopular films of) Kubrick and the whole French new wave.

That is what it will take for Friedberg and Seltzer to accomplish their goal (that goal being nothing less than total destruction of film as an art form) and I for one support them.

People under the age of 15 (probably younger) see it and think it's edgy because it uses adult humor and situations in a poorly designed way.  Thats just my opinion I guess, but when I was a kid I loved really dumb, stupid movies with lots of cussing because it felt like I was getting away with something.

When I was 15 I watched angsty crap like Donnie Darko.  I still would've thought that this sucked.

To me this is not like a train wreck, this is equivalent to 9/11.  I don't want to watch, I want to get the fuck out of the way.

1: Epic Movie
2: Date Movie
3: Friends with Money
4: Alvin and the Chipmunks
5: Kickin' it Old Skool

That's rather bizarre. Four of those movies are absolutely terrible (actually, three, I've never heard of Kickin' it Old Skool, but how good could a film with that title be?) - and then there's Friends With Money, which is actually pretty good, but also pretty damn low-profile. Is there a particular reason it's so popular where you are, Anyways? Has it only recently come out or something? It seems such an odd film to turn up on a list like that!

Tarkovsky's STALKER?

Oddly enough, that's what I just rented.

Seriously, though, I just can't understand how enough people find these movies funny enough to keep it profitable.  All I can hope is that since the jokes are recycled so much, everyone will eventually get bored of it and the series will be relegated to straight-to-DVD release.  I will even go so far as to say that these are worse than the majority of straight-to-DVD titles.

Dude, I'm pretty sure that these new "parody" films are on a different level of shit to stuff like Friends. I mean, Friends had a monkey in it! A monkey who went on to play a role in that Lost in Space film and then got his own spin-off.

They make money because they're cheep to make by Hollywood standards. The technical budget tends to be small and there aren't any huge stars that you need to pay. I think they also do inexplicably well in international markets. Here, they tend to peak quickly, fall just as quickly, and go out of the theaters quietly after a week or two. In other countries, they stick around for a long time and become number 1 DVD rentals (as Anyways has shown us with that top 5 list). I don't know why, but I guess since they only parody really big pop-culture references for the most part, and since the other joke-like-things are based on slapstick, they probably translate pretty well.

I mean, I know they're cheap, I'm just amazed it keeps making a domestic profit.

Does anybody know if a petition would do anything?  Or do those two have to agree to a certain number of signatures first?  They're rapidly approaching Boll's level of atrocity, which is why I ask.

Edit: Yeah, I was reading up on STALKER a little bit (plot synopsis, no spoilers), and I'm pretty excited about it.  I also rented Solaris, haven't seen that yet either.

Batman-style vigilante justice is needed.  It's too late to stop this one, but we need to get rid of the writers before they make another awful, pop culture driven piece of drivel after this one.  Get rid of Uwe Boll while you're at it.  Maybe then, maybe, film will be at least decent again.

$25,000,000 is not cheap. That could feed and clothe and provide shelter for many people! Instead entertainment is provided for people that could otherwise make their own amusement by drinking piss-weak beer and throwing up on themselves.

Dudes, it's not just that they're cheap to make; they get a ridiculous amount of funding.  Watch how much product placement there is in Meet the Spartans or Superhero Movie or whatever, it's downright sickening.  My biggest problem with the whole "Movie" franchise is that usually the beginning intro (which has almost nothing to do with the movie itself) is so much funnier than the actual movie.  Scary Movie II (I believe) began with an Exorcist parody with James Woods that was hilarious (except for a predictable toilet joke)  I've always known these movies to be bad, I probably laughed twice in the first Scary Movie and I haven't really been able to watch through any of the others.
Title: Re: This is a joke. This is a MOTHERFUCKING JOKE.
Post by: Boro_Bandito on 27 Jun 2008, 15:00
Scary Movie II was the only remotely funny movie that they have made, and its because of exactly that, the prologue sting.

Friends was a pretty good show(for a first few years) when you put it on comparison among American sitcoms. No, it's not MASH or All in the Family, but it's also not According to Jim or Yes, Dear. Quite the same reason I watch The Big Bang Theory. I feel like supporting the island of not-terrible in the sea of shit.

I actually liked Scary Movie back when it was all new and stuff. Then I saw Scary Movie 2 and thought "Meh, not as good as the first one". Then I watched the third one because it had Leslie Nielsen in it. Even he couldn´t save that movie.
The fourth one belongs to the same group of "hilarious" movies as all of the Police Academy -movies.

Now, I haven´t seen any of these other "Movies", but I think I´m gonna make a wise decision by listening to pretty much everyone and not seeing them.

A vast majority of the western world has got absolutely ZERO goddamn sense as far as artistic value goes, as far as we (people who do not like these movies) are concerned.

That's why movies like this get green lit.  They test these movies out on focus groups and people love them.  Until the general American population realizes just how bad mainstream media is that's the way it's going to be.

I am hoping that there is going to be a slow cultural shift within the next decade or so.  The younger generation is starting to show some promise (not much but it's there).

Until then just hold you nose because the vast bulk of movies are going to utter crap.

Oh, to be sure.

I mean, yes, when I was 13 I listened to Def Leppard and Guns N Roses and thought they were the best thing rock had to offer.  Then I bought Nothing's Shocking on a whim and wondered "Wow, why was I not listening to music like this sooner?"

But, I still acknowledge that Def Leppard and Guns N Roses had some awesome tunes.  I just came to realize that there are things that are more awesome.

So, I guess that's why I never feel comfortable telling someone that what they like is shit, if they really enjoy it.

Ok Im getting so sick of these movies I cant form words. Before every major film had a porn film with a cheest spin on its title. Now ever major film has a god damn parody film. Parodies can be really funny, these films just arn't. It is really bad when a comedy film cant display any funny moments in its trailer.

Its kind of sad, really.  Think about it for a minute.  We all come to a particular forum, where we can be around other people who are similar to ourselves in terms of intelligence / artistic integrity and the like.  I would say this forum, among the entirety of the internets has one of the most intelligent user bases.  That being said, we are not the "target market" for these movies.  Oh, I'm sure there is quite a few of you who will secretly watch this, or any of the other movies, but all in all, these movies are not made for us.  They are made for the MUCH larger population (you know, the same population that voted for Bush).  It isn't surprising to me that this and its predecessors do well, or that "safe" bubblegum pop (despite the outfits) does well.  It's easy to understand.  There are no hidden messages, no deeper meanings, nothing to confuse the simpler minded.  Everything is bluntly in your face.  I mean, Americans are getting stupider by the year (if average IQ testing is to be believed), so do you really expect things with artistic merit to make it in this day and age?  The only "art" field that doesn't have a part of it devoted to making simple things for simple people is the "fine" arts (Photography, Painting, etc), although I'm sure that could be argued as well.

Is this a fakepost because dude, elitism much?

Also lol @ the notion that QC forumites are, by and large, intelligent.  Have you READ the Comic Discussion forums?

Whoring out pop culture references as an icebreaker and source of entertainment is hardly something this forum is immune to either. We've got plenty of stuff like list threads floating around attesting to the fact that even warmed over caricatures of things we're already familiar can still pass as a subject of interest in every day conversation. I agree that these movies aren't exactly high art, but if someone feels like wandering into a theater, plunking down a few bucks and getting a chuckle out of a cheap non-sequitar or sight gag in their spare time, I won't hold it against them.

Yeah, but as long as idiots keep buying the tickets and they continue to make more money than they cost to make, we'll continue to be assailed with this crap.  I figure all I can really do is make sure I never spend a nickel on anything related to the mindless drek coming off of the Hollywood assembly line...

Firstly to the people who dissed Carmen Electra... Yeah, ok. She sucks and I'm not going to defend her, but did you see her in Scary Movie 4? She was hot! Then again I always did have a thing for the whole Renaissance Wench thing.

Secondly, what's people's take on the movie "Wing Commander"? It was a terrible movie but it was also great and deserves far more respect than it actually got. And also more hatred than it actually got...

You're an elitist.  Stop it.

How are you being "assailed" with these movies?  Until this thread, I had never heard of it.  I've never had someone run up to me in the street and smack me with a copy of Scary Movie.  Everything you're complaining about can be avoided.

Thinking about this film makes me nauseous.

I agreed to go to the movies with my boyfriend (now ex) and my best friend. They dragged me to see Meet The Spartans. I was so angry that they'd do that to me that I was near tears...but once I was in the theatre, I found myself laughing. Because I could not believe that I was actually there. Or maybe because I couldn't understand how they got the budget to even make half the movie.

Someone, for the love of God, shoot the guy with the checkbook.

Is this a fakepost because dude, elitism much?

Also lol @ the notion that QC forumites are, by and large, intelligent.  Have you READ the Comic Discussion forums?

To reiterate myself (because you didn't bother reading it the first time):

In comparison to the rest of the internet, the population here skews towards more intelligence.

All I did is simply suppose a correlation that, if you believe the (American) national average IQ is about 90-92, then it makes sense why things such as this movie (and its predecessors), bland pop music, et cetera, are all popular.

Not really elitist thinking, as I never went parading around saying that I was better, nor did I even say that my assumption was correct.  Its a theory, nothing more.

And finally, no, I don't read the comic forum.  I have specifically avoided it.  Comic book discussions tend to attract an user base that I would rather not be forced into murdering.

Side note:  I find it rather ironic that the posts that you have made in this thread come across as an elitist with your holier-than-thou retorts.  "I'm too good to tell people their tastes are shitty."  That's how it comes across.  Just sayin'

well no, the people who gravitate towards regulated internet communication are usually fairly intelligent anywhere. If you define the "rest of the internet" as youtube commenters and myspace then yeah, we're fucking brilliant people, but the QC forums are not comparatively more intelligent than other forums I have seen. Anywhere you go you're going to get both ends of the bell curve, we are no different.

So it is your contention that being smart makes you like "better" art than people with a lower IQ?

That is seriously the most ridiculous thing I've heard in months.  I know plenty of people with IQs of 140+ who listen to music I consider horrible in one way or another, including bland mainstream hip-hop.  A friend of mine is an extremely intelligent writer for the New York Times and he frequently praises Top 40 music.

And I've known plenty of people with low IQs who listened to "good" music.

Wow this has been blown a little out of proportion no?

I have friends who are INCREDIBLY smart at what they do.  I have friends who are studying biochemistry, biophysics, biogenetics.....hardcore science stuff. A lot of them are in the top 5% of their class.  Some of them like incredibly dumb movies.  I know girls who are at the top of their class who act like The Plastics from Mean Girls.  A persons taste in art, movies, music has absolutely no correlation whatsoever to their intelligence.  If you want to say that people who like movies like Disaster Movie or Scary Movie are idiots and retards go ahead...make that generalization.  It will not make it true.

Guys...if we all ignore Disaster Movie...it'll go away.

And you do it again zerodrone!  Congrats on still responding with an overtly elitist mentality.

Let me see if I can make this any more clear.

IN MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE the less intelligent people I know tend to listen to "less intelligent" music, watch "less intelligent" movies, appreciate "less intelligent" art.  This is not a 100% given.  This is not a broad sweeping fact, AS I PREVIOUSLY stated.  There is no rule for everything.  There is no 100% accurate statement.  There is always exceptions.  A good exception in my own life:  I have met LOTS of stupid Opeth fans.  I also have a smart friend who listens to top 40.

I'll make this seperate, hopefully your eye is drawn to this, since you seem to ignore most of my posts so well:

MY STATEMENTS WERE NOT UNIVERSAL FACT, THEY WERE A GENERALIZATION BASED ON PEOPLE I HAVE KNOWN/MET, THERE ARE MANY EXCEPTIONS, WE HAVE ALL MET THEM.

In conclusion:  Get off your high horse.

Thank you.

These movies exist because they make money.

I'm okay with this, because other movies that should exist don't make money. Not enough to justify making them in the name of profit.

So the two reconcile each other. Good movies are made because studios have the money from profitable bad movies.

well, to be fair, the guy writing superhero movie is the guy who wrote Scary movie 3 and 4, and none of the other _______ Movie(s).  To me, it looks a BIT (not much) better than the others, although still much more plain slapstick than anything else.  I'd personally like to see Mel Brooks make a "Superhero Movie" because I think it could be a far better parody of the numerous superhero movies out currently.  I shameless admit I attempted to watch the 300 ripoff, shit, I don't even remember the name of it, but got really annoyed about ten minutes in because none of the "actors" were "acting" and turned it off and deleted the file.

To be fair, and offer a counterpoint to my tastes, I haven't really enjoyed any "modern" american comedy.  Pretty much every "comedy" made in the past 5 or so years has been incredibly tedious for me to even sit through the whole thing.  Notable exceptions being Dodgeball and 40 year old virgin (which, despite being a comedy, I thought was a really good piece of social commentary as well).

Well, I think a lot of the actual funny has moved to television. It's a lot easier to build up character-based humor in a long-running format than a 2 hour movie, so movies are sometimes forced to fall back on dumb gags.

Consider Achewood. This far into the comic's run, half the Roast Beef jokes are tough to really appreciate if you aren't already aware of his many fears and insecurities. It takes a very deft screenplay and artful direction to achieve the same effect in a shorter format. It's often a make or break issue that seperates the good movies from the forgettable ones.

Well, no, actually, plenty of people have not caused harm while consciously aware they were causing harm.

In childhood, people usually don't know what the consequences of their actions are.

To intentionally cause someone harm is the only sin in the world.

You may not be doing it conciously, but things like the ridiculing comments you made on Ben792x's posts in this thread (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,20241.msg664724.html#msg664724) - even sigquoting him for a while! -  certainly does make you feel like shit when it's directed at you. Surely you realize that this can be hurtful?

But it was not my intention to cause harm.  It was my intention to throw around some good-natured ribbing.  If he takes my comments and cries over them, it's only 50% my fault at best, because interpretation of actions is half the equation.

It's real easy.  I'm talking about doing something that you intend to have a negative effect on someone's life.  Message board banter should not fall into that category, for crying out loud.
Title: Re: This is a joke. This is a MOTHERFUCKING JOKE.
Post by: Vendetagainst on 13 Aug 2008, 13:18
But what has a "negative effect on someone's life" is completely ambiguous, how can you possibly know how something will affect another, and what defines a "negative effect", and on top of that where is the line between acceptable impact and unacceptable? It's all subjective and every interpretation is equally arbitrary.

OK, then it's real simple.  If you know, for a reasonably certain fact, within your own analysis of the situation, that you will be hurting someone by taking an action, and you do it anyway, you're a bad person.

I'll admit it. I chuckled slightly at the trailer. Not enough to want to go see the movie, but enough to make me shake my head and wonder at Bill O'Riley.

As for parody movies, I think you hit it on the head Roxie. Looking back at 'great' parody movies (Spaceballs, Men In Tights, etc) and more contemporary movies (Dodgeball, Scary Movie 1, etc), the one thread they all have in common is that they assumed you were savvy enough/smart enough/aware enough to get at least the majority of jokes, and didn't make the small ones that needed to be explained a major part of the movie (For example, the Dues Ex Machinima on the winnings at the end of Dodgeball.) However, these 'bad' parodies (The recent Scary Movies, Meet the Spartans, etc) is that they bludgeon you to death with the comedy. They assume you'll never get anything deeper than a Brit or Sanjaya joke, and the one or two deep jokes they put in the movies they over explain to the point that it's not funny. They're not subtle at all.

I didn't mean for it to come across as saying that Spaceballs was subtle, and I apologize if it came out that way, but you have to admit: Not once did Lord Helmet fart into his suit, or make a joke about Tom Cruise getting married, or anything of the like. It may of been subtle like a slap to the face, but at least it wasn't screaming "LOOK AT ME! I'M FUNNY! HEY! LOOK AT ME! I'M FUNNY! DON'T BELIEVE ME? HERE! PIT OF DEATH! ARE YOU LAUGHING YET? Young Frankenstein is probably in my top 10 favorite movies list, but that doesn't change the fact that Mel Brooks is as guilty as anyone when it comes to taking the everything but the kitchen sink approach to comedy. The same could be said of Airplane!; just because the movies are considered gold standards in the parody genre doesn't change the fact that they succeeded thanks to sheer panache and a relentless drive to try anything for a laugh. It's the assembly line nature of these modern parody movies that hurts them; they're sometimes shat out half-baked and boring, but that doesn't really mean that the more successful members of the genre are much classier or more discerning by design. It's really just a matter of execution.

I just watched Young Frankenstein for the first time a couple months ago. I was in staggering disbelief at the content of the humor in that movie, and was literally tripping out, until my mom told me that no, it was not made in the 40's (back when they made black and white movies in that type of quality *talking film, not substance*) but in the 70's. Everything made a lot more sense, but it was still more hilarious when I thought it was from the 40's.

I have to say that I don't get the big deal about Spaceballs either.  I absolutely love Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and several of his others, and I don't DISlike Spaceballs, but it was really only particularly funny when I was like 12.  I get bored watching it now.

Speaking of parodies, hey, remember Zorro, the Gay Blade?  Man, that was fucking hilarious.

Never seen Zorro the Gay Blade; I've heard plenty of good and bad things about it though. I'll have to give it a rent one of these days.

Leinad: you're likely not alone in your initial moment of confusion. There was a lot of love and care put into nailing the look of '30s era horror classic-- a lot of the props used are actually from the James Whale's Frankenstein movies of the 1930s (the ones with Boris Karloff) and they cheerfully ripped off the cliched fadeouts and scene transitions at every opportunity. The effect is pretty remarkable, particularly the long shots of castle and countryside.

I've always felt that the parodies were used as an excuse to make pop-culture jokes, and that the parody didn't matter at all in the film.

Another element is that if you stripped them of the jokes they would be perfect (if somewhat dull) examples of the kind of movie they were parodying. These new scatter shots don't really have a plot, so you take away the jokes and there's nothing left. Part of what makes parody funny is that it very carefully and very perfectly uses all of the tricks and customs of the movie(s) it parodies.

Sigh, hate to be the barer of yet more bad news, but as if Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans wasn't enough, now National Lampoon are doing a  Gladiator/300 parody called -National Lampoon’s The Legend Of Awesomest Maximus.

Seriously how many of these things does the world need?

Take one from Inlanders avatar and go watch "Top Secret".  It will cure you of what ails you.  Or just remind you of how much "Parody" has gone downhill in the ensuing years

National Lampoon is nowhere near as bad as anything these "_____ Movie" folks.  Van Wilder was kinda good.  It wasn't doubleplusgood or anything, but it was vaguely decent which is more than most people can say for "Meet the Spartans"

I'm not even sure why they even bothered making a trailer.
Maddox already made one that describes this movie perfectly - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVHWJ9jPYw8

Most new comedies lately seem to be worthless. The last truly funny movie I remember watching was Blazing Saddles.

And here's (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810011696/trailer) another car crash masquerading as "satire"

I will pay money to see that one. Why?  C'Mon, Grammar, Trace Adkins, James Woods, Bavi!  BAVI!, and Hopper.  Also, I've been unable to stand Michael Moore, aside from Canadian Bacon, and its about time someone took a comedic jab at the fat bastard.

My god, you just seem to get more and more obnoxious every time I come here...

Where American comedy movies seem to be failing horribly over the past few years, cartoons and series seem to be making up for.
Frisky Dingo, Metalocalypse, Venture Bros, Arrested Development, Drawn Together and so on have all been great. Which obviously draws the conclusion that extended development is needed.
But that doesn't explain the good comedies that have been coming out from elsewhere, Hot Fuzz springs immediately to mind. Perfect cop movie parody.
Seems to me that all these ____ Movie are dumbing it down far too much. There's no need to treat the audience like they're idiots. Of course the movies play to the lowest common denominator but there's no need to assume that the lowest is a bunch of handicapped children... Hell, that's probably giving too much credit to ___Movie, even intellectually handicapped people are smarter than that.

Ohhhh elitest! I feel no fucking shame, elitism is brilliant.

Quote
On its debut in United States theatres, Disaster Movie grossed $2 million on its opening day, $5.8 million over the three-day weekend and $6.9 million over the four-day weekend (including Labor Day).[8] It ranked #7 for both the three- and four-day weekends. The film's takings for the weekend fell far short of the $17 million predicted by the Dallas Morning News.[9]

Just as an aside: The #2 movie at the box office last weekend was Babylon A.D. which got as a composite score from Rotten Tomatoes a stunning 4%. But yesterday...it went up to 5%.  At this rate, in 280 days or so it might be a movie worth seeing!

Yeah, the director of that publicly slammed his own movie.  I wasn't expecting great things.  Apparently it's a pretty mediocre film until the the last third, in which nothing makes any sense anymore.

I read the Onion AV club review; they feel bad for the production designers, who apparently did a very good job in the service of a very dire movie.

Depressing how often that happens these days.

Hey you!  Yeah, you, new guy.  Don't bring stuff back from the dead.  We were ready to forget about this.  Now it's in our heads again.

Just playin'.  But seriously, if it's more than a couple months old and you don't have anything important to say about it, just let it go.

In any case, Dance Flick is not attached to those two buttmunchers, it's mostly the Wayans this time and looks like it actually has gags that can be laughed at instead of cringed at.  That won't save it from being terrible, though.

Am I the only one that thought "Not Another Teen Movie" was absolutely fucking hilarious, and a perfect guilty pleasure? Unlike the "--- Movies" of late, it actually parodied classic movies that were all more or less part of the same genre. (Not just whatever was coming out)  In my opinion it worked really well.

I know this post doesnt really fit in with this thread, but its fairly close. I didnt want to make a fresh thread, i just wanted clarify that unlike the shit you've all been talking about Not Another Teen Movie is an awesome flick plagued by a similar style title as the others.

Or am i just a guy talking out of his ass with bad taste in movies?

That wasn't written by the fuckwads behind all the other ones.  It ain't cinematic perfection, but it was actually a borderline decent parody.  All of its' jokes were pretty centered around teen movies, there wasn't any dumb pop culture yearbook crap, and no blatant product promotion.
