Title: Grind, anyone?!
Post by: Lummer on 01 Jul 2008, 11:43
So, I'm sat here listening to Nasum's fantastic "Helvete" album. Anyone else here into this kind of stuff?

Not much.  I do like:
!T.O.O.H.!
Amok
Pavor
Genghis Tron

and a couple I can't remember the name of.  I'm just real picky about my grind bands, really.

I learned last night that Phobia are touring, and they're coming to Kansas.

I proceeded to flail in the grass (we were in a park) bellowing, "griiiiind your fucking head innnnn"

it was boss.

I clicked on this thread thinking it would be about Alice In Chains. I am disappointed.

Carry on.

Does anyone listen to Dystopia? They're not really full on grind, more of a sludgy/grindy combo kind of thing, but they are definitely excellent. They are supposed to put out a new album--eventually.

I like some of the crustier grind: Pig Destroyer, Phobia, and most power violence, which is close enough to not matter.

It's downright catchy and addictive. Really.

No, grindcore is the sound of wild boars mercilessly cannibalising one another. You're thinking of black metal.

I, personally, can go in for a bit of boar cannibalisation and pterodactyl fucking.

pterodactyls fucking.

I have their self-titiled. It's not really all that great.

Well yeah, they kinda went awry on the self titled. You want to try some of the early demos, such as 'pterafornication', and 'the span of Quetzalcoatlus'. They kinda sold out and went a bit soft on 'archaeopteryx', and then pretty much went to shit with aforementioned self-titled. They have promised a return to previous great music with the next release, 'the span of Quetzalcoatlus 2: Quetzalcopulation', but I'm not keeping my hopes up. But anyways, if you want a good slice of sludge/grind with some prehistoric drumming interludes, check them out.

Amok

I'm named after a fuckin' grind band now? the shame.

I like laughing at the track lists but the music is so dire.

It always shocks me how far threads like these get before anyone mentions Discordance Axis.

I listen to The Inalienable Dreamless, on average, once a day.

Probably.

I like Cloacal Kiss and Job For A Cowboy. Maybe some Locust if I am in the mood for something just shitty.

Re: Cloacal Kiss, get yourself The Sawtooth Grin's Cuddlemonster EP.

Same insanely squealing vocalist, but less of that deathcore-ish vibe and more emphasis on... quality.

I was pretty sure that I had mentioned Discordance Axis in my initial post. But apparently not!

The Inalienable Dreamless is actually the best grind album ever released though.

I am deeply ashamed as well!! :S

Anyone heard Jon Chang's latest project, Gridlink? That little asian man sounds PISSED!

I'm worried about checking out gridlink. I started listening to DA with inalienable dreamless, and was kinda disappointed by all the grind I listened to after that. original sound version has a lot of great stuff though. I'm just wondering if gridlink will live up to my expectations.

other bands though-I love ANb, PCP torpedo is an amazing...6 minutes. it sounds ridiculous, but It's definitely worth hearing. The last two tracks in particular, after blasting through the first songs, the last ones slow it down and sound heavy as fuck. It's kind of strange that I like their slow tracks more than their usual speedy stuff. Unwelcome remarks is another insane song- (on the split with Apt. 213) two heavily distorted basses, insane deep vocals.
Title: Re: Grind, anyone?!
Post by: Lummer on 08 Jul 2008, 12:07
By all means check it out. I for one really dig it, and my friend who's a HUGE DA fan calls it "Album of The Year" already.

Post by: Inanimated on 09 Jul 2008, 21:35
just being weird here, but does chang still let loose the occasional growl? the previews I heard seem to be mostly his shriek. which I love as well, but I just enjoyed the way he did both in DA. but I'll definitely check it out, sounds good so far.

I was right about to fall in love with Genghis Tron's "Laser Bitch", before I heard the screaming... Is that something with all Grind? Because it's new to me.

Man, you should have linked to the Staying Alive one.

I have never heard Grind with clean vocals and I hope I never will, I think.

I wouldn't be surprised if we find clean vocals, soon. All the extreme genres of metal for some reason have decided to incorporate clean vocals recently - and if it hits grind, it will be hilarious.

Nasum is, hands down, one of the greatest grind-bands ever. But I am a HUGE whore for other grind acts as well. These include:

Pig Destroyer
Agoraphobic Nosebleed
Cephalic Carnage
Birdflesh
FuckTheFacts
Sergeant Slaughter
Hewhocorrupts
Discordance Axis
Napalm Death
Regurgitate

and wait for it:
Internal Explosion of Anal Garland

Goddamnit Pinkpiche, these overlappings of our musical tastes are starting to get downright creepy. In a good way!

I meant to ask in a previous post, but is it just the brevity of the songs that you find unappealing? To me it seems the songs are short as a result of the musical approach, rather than being an integral part of it. Though, I admit, most grind songs that cross the 2 minute line are pretty terrible.

I just find it interesting, having read some of your reccommendations before, that someone with a taste in music that does not exactly shy from the extreme would write off this genre.

if anyone is interested, I have a really hilarious album called Dynamite Through a Lazerbeam - Queen as Heard Through the Meat Grinder. it's all grindcore bands doing queen covers. it's really awesomely bad. especially bohemian rhapsody. gets me every time.

If I'm not mistaken our native Denmark is well on it's way to having church weddings for same-sex couples. We've had publically registered partnerships for ages now.

Japanische Kampfhörspiele are one of my favourite grind bands, Nasum also

The Excrementory Grindfuckers do not really play grind, but they are funny

Huge amounts of yes. However, this thread is disgustingly lacking in mentions of Narcosis. The album Mechagodzilla released for free online not too long ago is pretty great as well in that ridiculous John Zorn and Beefheart-liking grind way. There's a link to download it from their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/mechagodzillagrind
