Title: AusCon-2009 is much more serious business / Rizzo thinks you're ok.
Post by: Rizzo on 03 Jul 2008, 01:54
There was talk of an Australia con thing in the Sydney meet up thread. So lets do it!

Who's keen?
Where? Sydney was suggested as this was reasonably central for everyone/everything. I mean, most of you are based in Sydney.
When's good? I'm thinking February, early or late is ideal for me but other people matter also! I'm going to Japan mid Feb so I can hopefully make a stop over before or after :D
What's happening? Given that there are only 15ish regular posters spread across Australia and New Zealand it hardly makes sense to try and do anything more complex than an extended hanging out session. However, throw your ideas in here, all suggestions are good.

So, would various posters from Aus and NZ be keen to meet up in Sydney, Februaryish 2009?

Sure, why not. Wait, isn't that peak humidity season in Sydney? Slogan: SydneyCon 2009: Sweat it up, baby!

I would think that seven months is plenty of time to have a bunch of commemorative t-shirts printed.

Due to a somewhat startling co-incidence I will be in Australia in February 2009.  I should probably be noted down as being "in" on this.

If we're going with that slogan, I think it has to be commemorative lycra leotards.

If they did move to Scandinavia, the Netherlands or Switzerland you'd still have to fly pretty far to attend.

Still not as bad as where it is. From the eastern US, Australia is something like a 22 hour flight. I'd love to see Australia some day, but twenty-two hours on a plane is just not something I could ever picture myself being willing to do.

Now, if they were to move the island somewhere between Europe and the US, that'd be pretty bitchin'.

Nah, it'd be a cold shithole like New Zealand then...
Once I've sorted out my fares to Japan I should be able to provide possible dates! :D
I'm also gonna be applying for UNSW and Sydney University so this might be a moving over to Australia party for me as well.

Jon, take a flight to Hong Kong.  Spend a couple days there taking in the local culture.  Then take a flight to Sydney.

One the way back stop in at Hawaii.  Spend a couple days relaxing in the sun before heading home.

I am pretty sure I will be able to do this. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to do this for under $350 + spending money. I think early February would be better, my uni semester starts on the 23rd (though I've done 8 weeks of all these units anyway, so I can probably arrange to be lax on that).

Can we please not call it sydneycon or ozcon, it's not a convention :P It's a meetup of regular internet folks. Southern hemisphere reprezent!

Who said anything about convention? This is an opportunity to be CONdescending to the Americans and their CONventions :D
Besides, a meetup doesn't seem official enough. Needs more bigness.

Synonyms of 'convention'

assembly, caucus, conference, congress, council, custom, gathering, meeting
convocation, crowd, gathering, group, meeting, muster, troop
colloquium, discussion, parley, seminar

Synonyms of 'party'
affair, celebration, festivity, fete, function, gala, occasion, soiree
carnival, celebration, colorful, feast, festal, festival, fete, fiesta, function, shindig

I personally like the sound of the "The Sydney Affair".

Actually, this is how I've planned to do it. The unfortunate thing is that, honestly speaking, I'll probably long since be out of contact with most of the cool Aussies on this forum before I ever undertake such an expensive venture. I can't imagine being able to afford a trip like that before I'm thirty (A good six years off and it'd probably be well later than that), but it is most definitely something I'd love to do. Not necessarily even Hong Kong, but if I were to make a trip to Australia in my life I'd probably want it on a summer long trip. Start off in western Europe, then down to Israel or something, then on to China or Japan and then to Australia before heading to the western US and then home.

If I got into teaching, as I've been considering again lately, it's something I'd love to do what with summers off and all.

I'm looking at 280ish (student flights, no other shopping around) Perth to Sydney return. Melbourne to Sydney should be pretty affordable, especially if you don't mind a little discomfort on the plane. Does anyone have any idea where they'd be staying or know of any backpackers type places they'd reccomend?

I have one couch. A maximum of two people can sleep on it but my place is small and since my brother will actually be in the country (presumably) I'd prefer only one person to crash here. First one to call it gets it, I guess.

For those looking for cheap accommodation that isn't someone's couch, I'd suggest perhaps a YHA. They are very reasonable share accommodation and if you can get a couple of you together you could share a room without too much hassle.

Well, I know it's early, but I'd like to propose this:

Everyone post their preferred dates for this. Sometime in February. Be generous, it probably won't be perfect for everyone. It would be good to get a general idea of when people are doing what.

After a few weeks - we'll give everyone who doesn't check daily some time, we can finalise a date. Obviously some preferance goes to those who are travelling interstate(and rizzo).

I'm free any time in Feb, but it sounds like 2nd/3rd week will be best.

Title: Re: AusCon-2009 is much more serious business / Rizzo thinks you're ok.
Post by: Rizzo on 10 Jul 2008, 20:01
I'd prefer either the beginning or end of Feb so 6-9th or 20-24th. As it stands my girlfriend and I will be going to Japan for two weeksish and we can stop over in Sydney either on the way there or the way back. If that doesn't work out though I can more than likely save some extra cash and come pretty much straight after I come back from Japan, I love flying so no biggie there :D
What about interstate peoples? What works for you guys?

I can do this pretty much whenever. Be aware, however, that in January and February I am prone to sudden severe restrictions on my timetable, depending on whether any of my favourite overseas bands are touring Australia in the summer and, if they are, what dates they announce. So, uh, basically plan a date and if I'd rather go see a band in Melbourne on that weekend then you'll just have to have fun without me.

I will probably be going back to uni on the 23rd of February. So before then would be swell. Anytime in the early 3/4s of the month are cool with me though.

We should have it on the 6th-9th so it can be all about my birthday and I can be the centre of attention hooray.

Seriously though as long as it is before uni goes back (I don't know dates for certain but it would be around the 20th of Feb) I am fine with whenever.

I mentioned that I have no idea what my life is going to be like in February so I say whenever other people say. I don't care, I'm coming, that's that.

Also it probably seems like a dick move but Harry's post made me think it'd be fun if this came during the summer touring season, and I could catch band(s) doing Easter States-only tours.

OKAY.

HOW IS THE WEEKEND OF THE 20TH OF FEBRUARY FOR EVERYONE.

If it is a problem for you Normz let me know, I am mostly basing the fact that I can't make it earlier than the 13th on the fact that it will probably clash with my exams for Summer Semester. And people pointed out  quite rightly that having it on the Valentines Day weekend might cause problems for those of us who are getting laid.

Any later and we are getting into Semester 1 territory, so I thought this date was optimal, but I want to get a consensus before I go booking flights, and I want to book as early as possible because it will be cheaper and I am poor.

P.S. I don't know what I'm doing for accomodation but I will probably figure it out.

20th of february is pretty ok for me. The week before would probably be better. It's the start of the first week of semester but that is cool; I've done this semester before.

So this means I need to ask myself if I trust qantas to throw a plane between perth and sydney on two days of my choosing?

Why don't we throw out the meetups for a 4-day period, say from Thursday 19th to Sunday 22th of Feb, depending on when out-of-towners will be arriving and leaving. Everybody go organise themselves and then post times for hang outs.
So exciting!

I will probably be arriving on Friday morning and flying out early on Monday morning so that I can have a full Sunday. Jodie and I have discussed catching the same flight so we are not trapped and alone in an unfamiliar city, but if anything is going on Thursday I might think about coming down earlier!

I suppose it is way too early to start planning actual events, but I was thinking we should have a picnic or something on the Sunday. Anyone else have any suggestions for shit we can do? I think we should definately organize a night to go out drinking, but I'd like to know what everyone else thinks of that. Maybe not everyone coming is a piss wreck! In any case Dovey and I will probably be doing some sort of drinking but we can probably do it at 1am when normal people have gone to bed.

P.S. Who wants to come clubbing with Dovey and I because we want to show the internet how we cut up on the dance floor.

If you do have floor space and some kind of thin mattress, and don't mind a third person from the internet cramming into your apartment, I am down, since apparently you guys live close to the airport, and it will be convenient if I am flying down with Jodie, but if you are worried about overcrowding issues I can sort out something else.

PS Hannah you haven't commented on my video yet

No, Chicagocon is still going to happen. But the Australians can't afford to fly over here to join us so they just do their own thing down under.

Also Brett, we have a small house (I do not know why people keep saying apartment) so there is floorspace for all! Should you want it. We will have a sofa bed and a futon but I think Dovey and Jodie bagsied those? I also think there might be a Dski somewhere in there but we will see how that turns out.

Indeed, I have no intention of laying claim to this event. I just publicised it.

Looks like it's gonna cost me a minimum of $500 to get there. Can't confirm yet but I'd imagine depending on work that I can do that.
Getting back from Japan the day before may make this somewhat brutal. Jetlagged etc etc.

Hey guys, I'm down with pretty much any date, on account of the whole living in Sydney thing. This will be good!

I'm up for drinking and/or clubbing!

Also picnics.

Also maybe going out to dinner one night?  There's plenty of cheap awesome food around the place if price is an issue with people. Also less cheap more awesome food as well.

When i was hanging out in Airlie Beach, i did notice that it is a regular stop for the Greyhound bus? Also, for a joblike thing, he could ask around at Sailing Whitsundays (http://www.sailing-whitsundays.com/) to see if they need any deckhands?

Yeah that's the kind of thing he wants to do.. he just has to get there first. And yes, I've discovered that Australia is WAY bigger than I thought it was, I think because the major cities they put on maps are much further apart than I'm used to seeing. But ok, just thought I'd ask since y'all are at least a little closer to Cairns than I am. Apparently he's talking about renting a van with some German chicks to drive down in, which sounds way sketchy to me, but he claims it's perfectly normal..

I have many questions about this.
So, the hotels in Austrailialand might not be as cheap as like Boston or Chicagoland. I may not be able to get a hotel room. Could I crash with someone there if I can make it?

Also, and this is important: at what age can you start drinking in Austrailialand, I want to be able to get into the clubs and stuff but I'll just be a wee 19 year old.
Title: Re: AusCon-2009 is much more serious business / Rizzo thinks you're ok.

I would also just like to go to Austrailia sometime. I've never even been out of the United States. I plan to visit mexico at the bottom of my list of countries to go to. Mostly because I live in Arizona, and its like a 6 hour drive there and I've never went. I think there'd be some awesome irony to it all if I didn't go to the place closest first.

Austrailians! I wanna hang out with you because every Aussie I've ever known is really cool (I've known one, but she was so freaking cool!)

Hotels in Sydney vary in price depending on the area and the quality, as with everywhere. Plus there are hostels around, as mentioned earlier in the thread, which are generally pretty cheap and at least contain a bed of some sort. The drinking age here is 18.

Tommy really is right, though. The only reason we have a semblance of a date for this thing is because Brett bought plane tickets and set the date. Seeing as most of the Aussies here live in Sydney and the meetup is there, they're pretty disorganised as to what is going on, so I doubt anyone could give you a soid answer on questions about details. And any details one person gives you probably will be contradicted by someone else. Plus, in general we're pretty lazy, so things will get organised quickly closer towards the date. I know most people don't know what they're doing next week, let alone in February.

Haha! I have short hair. So take that, I guess.

Also, I don't actually drink. I was more curious because I can't really go out to bars or clubs with friends here in the US because a lot of them don't let you in unless you're drinking age. I didn't want that to be a problem if I were to travel o'erseas to see you people who actually enjoy drinking. I just don't want to be left alone in Australia, I hear everything there is poisonous and there are spiders that are as big as I am.

The Courthouse is probably one of the last remaining awesome pubs in Newtown.  Everything else is being rebuilt into bullshit trendy pub/clubs, or is the Town Hall or the Sando (ie: awful and kind of depressing).  People could probably sit in the front courtyard having a drink and still see the fancily-dressed bocce players/picnickers in certain parts of the park.

man whenever i stay up all night for whatever reason and then check the forums at whatever time in the morning cos there's nothing else to do, everyone's posting and i go "oh look, more people who aren't asleep!" and then i remember that this is really just when all you wacky australians come out cos it is actually regular awake hours for you over there or something.

that has nothing to do with the meetup, i apologize. time zones are still utterly confounding for me sometimes.

Actually, for most of Australia it's, like, 11:30 at night now.

Which, granted, is regular awake hours as far as the internet's concerned.

Hey Harry/Inlander and any other forumites coming to Sydney who dig jazz kinda stuff. Make sure you check out this record store, Birdland (http://www.birdland.com.au/), while you're in town. It's a pretty great jazz store that's been around since the early 90's, specialising in a whole bunch of stuff other places don't have.

Yeah, for some reason I've never managed to get there whenever I've been in Sydney in the past. I did order the Complete American Decca Recordings of Count Basie from them over the 'phone back in the day, though.

Any other Sydney-ites have any suggestions on clubs?

My experience is generally limited to either live music venues, or dubstep/drum and bass/stupid experimental clubs.

Well, as far as dubstep/grime stuff goes there is VOID (http://www.voidsound.com/), which is usually pretty good. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, though. There are many drum and bass nights, but no regular nights at the moment, so I'd have to check closer to the date.

There will definitely be some kind of rockin' local bands on at the Hopetoun, Spectrum, and World Bar, and it'll be cheapish... the Annandale also, but that might be more expensive depending on who's playing.

This (http://www.dualplover.com/consolador.html) is a night dedicated to stupid and experimental music which I have occasionally played and DJed at. It's on Wednesday nights, though.

But yeah I'm not really sure about clubs with non-syncopated dance music, though I will totally go to one if someone wants to.

Yeah, guys, I am pretty much with norms on this one. I mean, I've been to uhm... some place near Heather's house for shopping (wasn't Newton), I've spent a lot of time in the city staying at fancy apartments and have not been to any cool places where no one cares what you were or whether you play drunken bocce and have amazing picnics in the park. I need to be educated on the trendy places in Sydney.

Ally I feel your pain (being poor, working in the service industry catering to rich dickbags), except you can't do what I did because there aren't really coffee places that cater exclusively to dirt poor people like there are bars.

PS I am technically not allowed in nightclubs at all although this will probably change by February.

with clubbing I normally go to Chinese Laundry, because it is pretty easy to get in, without being told to go put on a proper shirt/dress. The music isn't too bad either, but I am pretty easily entertained music-wise. However I am not the most avid club-goer, so I  guess peopel actually living in Sydney at the moment may be able to come up with more suggestions.

Chinese Laundry is kind of just our "eh, we are sure we'll get in here" thing.  If we are going to have a good mix of guys and gals at this gathering then we may want to try some place a little bit nicer/different/whatever, depending on what kind of music people like.  Ali, I thought that the Basement is like, a place where you sit down and watch jazz.  While that might be fun it is not really "clubbing" as such.

The Oxford Art Factory is a slightly more upmarket club but is still pretty trashy.  I think that with the limited timeframe it'll be less a case of "where to go" than "what kind of music do we want to listen to?  ok, now who plays that kind of music and where are they playing, let's go see them."  If we don't really care then we could really do worse than a drunken binge through Oxford Street.
Title: Re: AusCon-2009 is much more serious business / Rizzo thinks you're ok.
Post by: fatty on 10 Nov 2008, 05:23
No it is not a club, and you will probably be standing to watch the jazz. Seated tickets are for people who have dinner there.

Also I went to spectrum the other night and I reckon it is a pretty nice place for live shows. Yay.

Dovey where do you go dancing in Perth? I know of like, the Court, but that is pretty much it.

I don't really. None of my friends like doof doof music and I don't exactly want to go to raves myself. Also I guess I spend most of my free time (which isn't much) with my girl and she definitely does not like dance (no matter how hard I try).

That being said, I like Shape. It is half a block away from my work as well. Although it is also about 50 blocks away from anything else at all so it makes it hard to factor it into a night out unless you are specifically going to Shape and you know you will be there the whole time. I haven't been to the Library but I hear good things and music-wise the deen is often OK but it is also filled with fucking douchebags. I would go to Connections or the Court if I could actually convince someone to come with me and that they won't get cracked onto.

(for the non-Perth types: Connections and the Court are the two main gay bars here)

I feel as if my reply will decide whether or not Tommydski is coming to AusCon.

In my experience, 'going out dancing' means throwing yourself into a crowd of sweaty drunken people flailing to Top40 remixes and knowing all the words.
Dancing in your undies on top of the bed, or with a bunch of people you know to music you aren't ashamed of, is a whole heap better. I guess AusCon will be the latter (and hopefully the former), so it doesn't really matter anyway.

Liz I am twenty two in about a week and a half. I expect presents (naked pictures will do just fine)

As Lunchoid said I have been going out and dancing for- not quite five years- but for quite a while now, and I am a little burned out and I kind of just enjoy watching movies with my girlfriend at home at the moment? I work such dumb hours and get no sleep that by the time I get to the weekend I can not move let alone stay out til 4am throwing shapes.

Also as she said there are usually a lot of people at these things and sometimes I am not crazy about people some times.

I'm sure I will get the bug and want to go out and rave again soon (I am being abandoned by The Girl tonight and the Bang Gang Deejays (http://www.banggang.com.au/) are having a party so maybe tonight?).

ANYWAY SO HEY LET'S TALK ABOUT OZCON OR SOME SHIT AM I RIGHT

Actually this will be tricky for me because it's my mum's birthday around that time, and "Sorry mum, I could afford time off work and the price of an aeroplane ticket but I decided to go hang out with some people off the internet instead of come home and visit you" probably won't cut it. However I may be able to fit both in, but I won't know until the new year.

Option B: You fuckers all come to visit me in Melbourne. Melbourne is better.

Okay, so.

This weekend I was in Sydney with my family for about 36 hours, because every fortnight my brother gets to go up to Sydney and have his son (my nephew) for the weekend. (It's Complicated.) Anyway, today my mum hatched a plan entirely independent of my input which is to go up to Sydney for her birthday on another of my brother's access visits, which happens to be on the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of February.

So. If that plan is gone through with (and I don't see at this stage why it wouldn't be) it would be no thing at all for me to hang around for a few days more in Sydney. No kind of a thing at all.

I work from 7-3 on weekdays so if anyone is going to be around to pick people up and hang around with them and things it would be neat. I will get a couple of keys cut and you can share them amongst yourselves maybe?

Actually I'm not. When it came down to it it was Soundwave tickets or going to Boston and I obviously chose the latter. By the time I had the extra money it was NIN who I've seen twice already and Cradle of Filth whom I haven't seen yet and whom I might be supporting (as in being the support act) anyway.

oh shit this thing!... I still have every intention of coming it's just I have not booked flights or fixed a place to stay or anything (with the exception of buying some dashing stuff for the overdressed picnic)

So if there are any couches, small areas of floor or nearby dumpsters that have yet to be claimed for the time in question where I could crash that would be well beyond awesome. Failing that if there is anyone who is planning on staying in a hotel/hostel and would like a disorganized, disheveled room mate then am I the guy for you.

I only ask this because if I do end up in a hotel/hostel alone you guys would probably never see me due to my sense of both direction or time having been removed at birth.

I can sit to one side and pretend I don't know you guys or I can try to borrow some or maybe, just maybe I will be so hungover and freaked out at the fact that I have been drinking in a strange city with strange people and will come down with a hectic case of agoraphobia, and I will be curled up in a ball humming to myself. Jodie you have permission to go through all my clothes for something because the only shirt you will find with buttons is a loud fat party guy shirt I bought from an op shop for a beach party we had at work. The one nice shirt I bought for a wedding disappeared somewhere in the last move and is nowhere to be found. You have seen what I wear. Do you remember when we went to that play? Those were the fancy clothes I wear to legitimate cultural events

(Hey Sydney-ites. Just letting you know there will be a free gig on in Sydney Park this Sunday at 3 pm, near the smoke-stacks. Sorry for the gig spam, but I don't have all of your numbers, and this seemed as good a place as any to put it. Anyways, it's the second outing of a completely solar-powered PA system a few friends of mine have been tinkering with, and it should be a lovely afternoon out, weather permitting. Bring a picnic/dog/friends!)

Well, Lunchy reckons she will be moved out by then but as far as I know you are still cool to crash at mine Dovey.

Jodie and Hat are still staying as well, as is Rizzo and his lady friend but I believe they are arriving the day you leave? Lunchy will need to be more specific about when she's moving for me to know just how many couches we will have.

If Lunchables has moved out by then (which is looking unlikely) then I will be staying with her, because we are actually joined at the hip when we are in the same city.  Brett is a big boy and can stay where he likes (but he did say he would probably just come with me).

Basically I am staying wherever Lunchy is! <3

I shall figure out whether the boy will come with me, and if so, where we will stay.

EDIT: I could probably make an additional day trip on the Monday or Tuesday or whenever day Rizzo is going to be there. I work Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

This meet-up is this weekend. Possibly starting with dinner tomorrow night I think, according to Lunchy's all-knowing whiteboard.

Harry I wouldn't mind seeing the wildlife thingy... I've been meaning to see it for a while, and keep putting it off.

It's actually sunny in Sydney today for a change. And the weather report seems to indicate that we might actually be able to do fancy bocce without fancy umbrellas.

I'm getting in on Friday morning, I'm having brunch with an old friend and then I can come catch up with you folks wherever you are on Friday afternoon probably.  I'll be away with my family all Saturday but I think I'll be back in Sydney on Sunday afternoon and/or evening, then I'll be around all Monday.  So, I dunno, I've got Ali's number and Jimmy's number from the last time I was in Sydney so I'll give one or both of them a call or something when I'm around and I can come meet up with you all!

I will be there on Sunday with Heather and the boy (at least I think he is coming). I'm staying at Heather's (most of you know where that is) and it will be easy for us to get to where we have to go.

So... bring warm clothing?

Guys I am pretty excited, but not too excited. I think I will be more excited, and probably drunnnk by the time I land in Sydney.

Oh by the way so I don't let anybody down, I am totally not as dashing as I appear on the Internet.

Don't worry Dovey. Lunchy is actually a forty year old dude, and Est is actually some kind of sentient computer program.

They're still pretty awesome to hang out with though.

So guys, because there are people in Sydney who I've known for years and years and so who might reasonably say I should prioritise hanging out with them over hanging out with other people, after I land tomorrow morning I'm going to go to Newtown to have brunch with someone not From The Internet.

But you guys are all planning on hanging out somewhere in Newtown too, right? I could totally come hang out with you after brunch.

I'm meeting my friend at the junction of Enmore Road and King Street. Don't know exactly when, though - some time around 10is or 11ish, probably.

Why are there no pictures up yet? I am logged in at this dodgy internet place to see what is happening and dang. Nothing. Today it is soggy and also Saturday. There are no plans aside from Jodie and I are meeting Phil in about fifteen minutes. It is five minutes past noon.
