But I'm sorry if I offended anyone who likes rap music. Just because it's catchy does not make it a good song. The best songs I know of aren't that catchy. And have you ever seen the music video for Touch My Body? Or maybe it's spelled differently...I couldn't care less. It made me want to go kill myself. But, back to hip-hop and rap, and touching on other genres being shitty, I sort of get what you mean. Maybe I haven't collected enough experience in the world of hip-hop, but if you would point me in the direction of hood hip-hop artists that would be nice. Also, I can't seem to find ska that I dislike so that could be coloring my perception of other genres.

It's possible to quantify figures of speech, and it generally follows that the more figures of speech the writer put more thought and/or emotion into writing that song. So no, if I meant musically "best", then yes, it would be pretty the most subjective term available, but I mean lyrically. If a lyricist is completely bland and just says his/her ideas plainly (an example would be some, but not all, country music), then it's easier to understand seeing as there is no thought involved, and is, at least how I understand it to be, more "catchy". I don't see many people saying that J.K. Rowling is a better writer than, say, Kurt Vonnegut, or George Saunders.

I'm just using this to gauge what we're talking about right now, because I can't think of a better way. Instrumental songs are a whole other deal I'm not going to go into right now; it's not that I don't like them, because I do, but it's not something I think I'm musically advanced enough to debate. Post-rock? For me the appeal is how it sounds, not trying to figure out the lyrics. If that's even possible, due to the incomplexity. By the way, listen to the song "I'm a Wheel" by Wilco and tell me what it's about.

Man this thread has gone from comparing bad bands, to debating rap, to trying to figure out what good music is. stupid n0t r0b, i mean there are hardly any rappers who play their own instruments. It's become commonplace and expected for people to do that, and always has been, but now so much popular music (read: those girl pop stars along the lines of Hannah Montana and Hilary Duff) and rap is written by others, let alone performed. THAT was what I meant by that. It seems silly, I know, to like a band more for doing something every other band I like does, but I admire them for being some of the first to take a step in what I consider the right direction.

You are perhaps aware that there are many genres where the artists don't play instruments. Noise, ambient, electronica, trip-hop, audio collage (Negativland, EBN, etc.)...

It can be argued that post rock is intricate in it's simplicity. Or at least, that it is easy to understand why one would feel intimidated by it. However simple theory-wise, post rock often lacks the particular fundamentals of traditional Western music that people are used to discussing. Those being lyrics, hooks, and typical song structure.
The absence of these makes post rock appear more difficult to judge.

Sorry, that was entirely my fault. I was reading much too quickly. Also, I was more obscure than I meant to be. Saying that, for instance, Daft Punk, doesn't play their own instruments, is a given. We are talking about different things, I think. I mean that atrists have other people do what is actually possible with instruments, versus those who do it themselves.
I meant that to decipher any meaning from instrumental music you need to have a pretty good understanding of music theory, which I do not. If you're just repeating three chords over and over again with no lyrics, I guess you can't get very much meaning out of it. Unless it's on some completely higher plane, which, like I said, I don't have any understanding of.

Except that Beastie Boys aren't a band. They're a rap group. They were a band originally and in many ways are now, but they always have been a hip-hop group at heart and it's not that common for hip-hop artists to write the music for their songs. It's more often than not samples or chords stolen from someone else or whatever. So his point is valid.

Absolute rubbish. When we first heard this on the radio we thought this was just a stupid bootleg thing - it's even got a stupid bootleg title ('Bruised Water', is it 2001 again or something?) - but no. It is actually being released. People are listening to this and thinking "yes these two songs definitely work very well together".
We know this might be 'big in the clubs' or whatever but surely this is actual, proper shit? "Oh I know we'll make a video based on that Splash film from the 80s." Brilliant. Here's a tip to the label: if you're going to choose a Tom Hanks film to 'homage' in the video, Saving Private Ryan might provide a better visual accompaniment to the sound of carnage and despair as dance music is blown limb from limb.
Probably quite good on drugs we suppose.

I dunno, I actually rather like her. I will admit that 70% of the reason why is 'cause she's a fox, and another 20% is 'cause I don't understand what she's saying. But 10% is I actually think the music is catchy.

I honestly don't see why none of you like Millionaires. They're operating in the same general area as Le Tigre or Chicks On Speed; the only tonal difference between them and brat-punk bands like, uh, Bratmobile is that they're lampooning the California/club aesthetic.
It's not just me, either, I posted a link to Millionaires on a local indie-fucks message board and pretty much everyone I know on there agree'd they're awesomely ridiculous and ridiculously awesome.

What I meant by the Le Tigre comparison is that their attitude is pretty similar, just in a different style/scene. It's still "I'm a girl, no I won't fuck you, I kick ass motherfucker" music.

Well I lost respect for Tremont when Penny booked Vanilla Ice's poo-rap-metal comeback. But some friends actually opened for him and said he was a really cool dude. The problem I have with rappers is that their music is based on the cookie-cutter format of pimping, whores, guns (whatever that gets into as well), or just plain arrogance. Maybe I have not been subjected to rap about better things. I hear Atmosphere is actually pretty good, but I haven't gotten around to listening to them yet. But I'm sorry if I offended anyone who likes rap music. Just because it's catchy does not make it a good song. The best songs I know of aren't that catchy. And have you ever seen the music video for Touch My Body? Or maybe it's spelled differently...I couldn't care less. It made me want to go kill myself. But, back to hip-hop and rap, and touching on other genres being shitty, I sort of get what you mean. Maybe I haven't collected enough experience in the world of hip-hop, but if you would point me in the direction of hood hip-hop artists that would be nice. Also, I can't seem to find ska that I dislike so that could be coloring my perception of other genres.

Fred Durst does not write excellent pop tunes. He writes clangy ugly angry shit noise. ABBA write pop tunes. There is no literally comparing the two outside of the fact that they use similar basic elements of music such as rhythms and notes. Not similar rhythms and notes, mind you. They just both use rhythm and notes.
And Brokencyde don't write excellent pop tunes, or intelligent lyrics, or have decent production, or have alright hooks, or have interesting sound textures. They are a mix of bland and awful. If I had the choice between hearing every piece of music for the rest of my life as if it was performed by ABBA and a painful, prolonged death, I would gladly take ABBA. If the choice involved hearing every piece of music for the rest of my life as if it was performed by Brokencyde instead, I would gladly rip off my own arm and beat myself to death with it to save you the trouble. Brokencyde are dire, vacuous shit, and literally infinitely more awful than ABBA were, are or will ever be.
