Title: Music Reccomendations (I know, look through the music forum, whatever)
Post by: kraemandrummer on 18 Jul 2008, 12:55
:-D.Kay so I'm looking for some new music based on my current tastes. I KNOW! look through the forums to find stuff, but I have too much of a diverse taste to do so, so screw off.
Anyways, Jeph, if you could reply too, you seem to have most of the musc I like plus others, so it would be nice.
Here is a sample of the music I like, divided into 3 different categories.

Post Rock                                             Metal                                                      Other/Indie
Explosions in the Sky                           Blind Guardian                                               Arcade Fire
Mogwai                                             Eluveitie (I suggest this one)                           Moldy Peaches
Sigur Ros                                           Wintersun                                                    Of Montreal
Godspeed YOU! Black Emperor             Edguy                                                          The Strokes
A. Silver Mt. Zion                                Mastadon                                                     Sufjan Stevens
Between the Buried and Me                            Fiest
Rhapsody of Fire                                            Broken Social Scene
                                                       Nightwish                                                     Tegan and Sara
Savage Circus                                                Ted Leo and The Pharmacists
                                                       Symphony X                                                  Animal Collective
                                                       Rammstein                                                    TV on the Radio

Kay so, I am mainly looking for some Post Rock/ Post Metal please. I have ENOUGH POWER METAL, recommend more and I will not be happy. If it is going to be metal, please give me something new, e.g. I was surprised with Between the Buried and Me and Mastadon. Folk Metal like Eluveitie would be nice too. I would also enjoy indie/ punk that I wouldn't know of otherwise.

Sorry about me being lazy. Please, either ignore or reply with actual suggestions. Sarcasm would not help my already low self esteem :-(

Kyuss, definitely. One of the most underrated bands ever. Among the less known bands (than Kyuss) I recommend are: Clutch (ok, this one is probably more known than Kyuss), Nebula, Black Nasa and Fu manchu.

Before you do anything said in this post, listen to Kai and go spin Spiderland by Slint.

In terms of post-metal, check out Oceanic by Isis and Australasia and The Fire in our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw by Pelican. Those three should get you started with post-metal.

Now it looks like you have all the basics for post-rock. Going from there, I have a few bands that might be worth a look. Do Make Say Think have put out some wonderful jazz-based post-rock. You can start wherever you like, but & Yet & Yet and Winter Country Hymn... are personal favorites of mine. Mono craft some of, if not the best crescendo based/quiet-loud post-rock out there. Listen to their records in chronological order, they get better with every album. Laura is a wonderful Australian post-rock band who make beautiful music and loud music but usually with short and easier to manage songs. Try Radio Swan is Down for them. One of my favorite post-rock acts is The Pirate Ship Quintet, a newer band in the scene. They are rather standard fare, but they do post-rock so well. Their debut EP is certainly worth a look. Yndi Halda is a happy and playful band with devilishly long songs. Their debut LP is very good. Daturah are brilliant at the slow post-rock jam, and both their albums, Daturah and Reverie, are quite good. Last but not least at all is Envy. They arn't exactly post-rock since they started out as a hardcore band. However in recent years they have let post-rock seep into their sound and it is fucking incredible. Start with A Dead Sinking Story and move forward from there.

Sorry for making that so long, but all those bands are worth a look. That should take you a while to get through.

Tom Waits is the answer to all your problems.

Metal-wise, check out Harvey Milk. And get while the getting is good. Now that Pitchfork has reviewed their newest album you've got about a week to enjoy them before the backlash sets in.

I have too much of a diverse taste to do so, so screw off.

e.g. 'I haven't actually tried or at all looked at what this really rather eclectic forum is like.'

For post-rock, based on what you like here, I recommend Hope of the States, Mansun, Bonebox, The Cooper Temple Clause (if you don't mind a bit more of an electronic edge) and coupled with you liking metal, Porcupine Tree and The Mars Volta. For the metal side, I know hardly any of those bands, but I re-recommend Porcupine Tree. For 'other indie,' I recommend Barenaked Ladies last two albums (no, really), Eels, Fountains of Wayne, Weezer, Jacob's Stories (coupled with the post-rock thing), and Kaki King

Yes I have.
It's just because I like almost anything, I would spend hours looking for stuff in all the different genres I like. And I don't have the time. You name it, I probably would like it or get into it. (I'm just getting into "Noise" right now! My Cat is an Alien anyone?!)

And I never really considered BNL or Fountains of wayne, or weezer indie, got em all.

Um, I have Mono actually, as I said, its a sample of my tastes. And I have porcupine tree. Sick Band! I cannot believe I forgot to mention Isis, I have their discography (OOPS!)

Tom Waits is the answer to all your problems.
I got him. amazing! and it's not really a problem per say, I just am interested in new stuff.

And if you don't know any of the bands I've listed, please check them out yourself. Blind Guardian blew my mind, Eluveitie's pretty good too.

Anyways thanks for the replies!!!!

'Indie' is an extremely vague - and utterly ridiculous - term as it is. I listed bands which I thought would fit in with the other bands on your indie list.

Besides, still plenty of stuff in my post for you to check out.

Let's see here, for post-rock, some solid groups (other than the ones you mentioned) are 65daysofstatic, Do Make Say Think, Ef, El Ten Eleven, Grails, Maserati, and Te'

And I'm not too much into metal, but that Baroness album last year was pretty stellar.

My Cat is an Alien anyone?!

I liked the premise but they were pretty weak live, I never bothered with the records after that. Lambsbread and Birds of Delay are more fun.

You should listen to Old Man Gloom for post metal. Get yourself Seminar II and III and then wonder why anyone ever bothers with Isis (including Aaron Turner).

In terms of post metal etc. don't listen to whatever the fuck these people have suggested. You need the following, stat:

...And Oceans
Agalloch
Arcturus
Augury
Blut Aus Nord
Borknagar
Carnival in Coal
Lykathea Aflame
Sculptured
Ulver
Vintersorg

Get back to me when you've finished those. Here's a few youtube clips to start you off:

Agalloch - Not Unlike the Waves (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYMaIzFq1Iw)
Arcturus - Alone (Live with ICS Vortex) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1QW5ZDhLM8)
Borknagar - The Genuine Pulse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7E9aEB7w30)

Also, you don't listen to enough power metal because you didn't mention Ayreon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtAhlPcdh9c) or Star One (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3q7lwl5nSQ)

Oh, I just remembered. The Pax Cecilia is seriously boss. They put out some of the finest post-metal/metal/whatever the fuck you wanna call it out there. So beautiful and deadly. And, they give their muzak out for free. Check them out asap.

I can't believe Khar was the first to say Agalloch. The youtube clip from them is a butchered version, they cut out about half the song, none of the lyrics, just most of the instrumental parts. Some of their stuff also borders on folk metal.

Sculptured is not what I would call accessible, I think The spear of the lily is aureoled is more accessible than Embodiment, but I haven't heard apollo ends, so I am not sure if that is more or less accessible. Then again, I haven't listened to most of your metal list, but what I do know of isn't avant-garde and odd like Sculptured.

Not an expert on folk metal, but off the top of my head, try Skyclad, Ensiferum, Empyrium, Amorphis. And no, that reverse alphabetical order wasn't intentional. Maybe Wintersun?

Burzum, Ulver, Wolves In The Throne Room, Drudkh, How Like A Winter, Iron Maiden, Laura, Opeth, Agalloch, Kyuss, Electric Wizard

(PS- Post-metal is not a genre. It's sludge.)

"DINOSAUR JR." My personal favourite band, J Mascis' riffs are monolithic.

Post-rock: This Will Destroy You, assuming you haven't already listened to Jeph when he raved about their self-titled a little while ago.

Other: I damn well hope you are listening to Jets to Brazil if you say you like Ted Leo.

I really disagree with you there. Maybe we are thinking of different definitions of post-metal. I think of post-metal as post-rock, but metal. We agreed on that? Sludge is not post-metal, Isis is both, Baroness is both, Crowbar is just sludge, Melvins are just sludge, Agalloch is just post-metal (actually, they are a lot more than that, but they aren't sludge, which is what we are paying to right now).

You can't just be an asshole and make demands of people then say "oh sorry, I have low self-esteem" and expect everyone to jump through hoops for you.

If you like "basically anything" then go download shit at random from the mediafire thread or check out the twelve billion other recommendation threads, because everyone just recommends their favourite artists over and over again in every fucking one of these threads anyway.
