Title: Monty, The Monster Of Montauk
Post by: Johnny C on 03 Aug 2008, 13:53: I'm going to hide a picture of this behind this link (http://images.nymag.com/images/2/daily/intel/08/07/30_deadcritter_lg.jpg) because it might not be for the squeamish.

Anyways I guess a dead creature of some kind washed up in Long Island recently and people don't know what it is! Maybe it's viral marketing (http://www.cryptidsarereal.com/) but I guess everyone is denying that which is uh kind of not how viral marketing works? Here's a CNN report (http://gawker.com/5031772/montauk-monster-scare-gets-all-the-way-to-the-c+n+n), a New York Magazine (http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2008/07/the_monster_of_montauk.html) article, and the Gawker post that started it all (http://gawker.com/5030531/dead-monster-washes-ashore-in-montauk).

Personally I am a bit skeptical!

Also, the hair that is left behind its head is to long for a pug methinks.

Dog, yes. (The 2nd pic makes it much easier to identify the skull/canineinity)

We need someone to place a shoe/ruler next to the critter, its way to tricky to guess scales on this!

Also, linds, whats sad about a dead animal? Death is as much part of life as birth! Be happy the critter got a buttload of attention in this time of dreadfull news!

The pics of its skull look like a match with an xray of a water rat's skull. The body just looks like it's bloated and half-eaten/decomposed.

No that would be exactly how viral marketing works. You wouldn't want people to realize too soon that it's a marketing ploy because then they'd lose interest; as long as it's a mystery people will keep talking about it, but once it's not a mystery they'll stop caring. Remember the Simpsons episode about the fake angel and the mall?

It just does. *shrug* Besides, calling the thing a "monster" makes it sadder, because it's just some poor dead animal, not some ferocious hell beast come to eat your face.

The face makes me think boxer, with compensation for bloating and such. Again, a poor size reference.

I find it very odd that people are so astounded. Dead animals look weird. Dead animals in water look even weirder. Kids these days don't go trudging around near rivers or in the woods much, do they?

No, not really, because the chances of getting stabbed or raped or stabbed and raped are probably much higher than ten years ago.
