Title: Windy City
Post by: tommydski on 04 Aug 2008, 18:23
There's a Tornado warning.

Quote
The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Tornado Warning for Northwestern Cook County in northeast Illinois, northwestern DuPage County in northeast Illinois and central Kane County in northeast Illinois until 8:00 p.m.

AT 724 PM...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RADAR INDICATED STRONG
ROTATION IN A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM NEAR ELBURN...MOVING EAST AT 53 MPH.
THE TORNADO WILL BE NEAR WAYNE...DUPAGE AIRPORT...AND WEST CHICAGO BY 735 PM...BARTLETT...AND 6 MILES SOUTH OF STREAMWOOD BY 740 PM...

TAKE COVER NOW! IF NO BASEMENT IS AVAILABLE...MOVE TO AN INTERIOR

ROOM ON THE LOWEST FLOOR. MOBILE HOMES AND VEHICLES SHOULD BE ABANDONED FOR MORE SUBSTANTIAL SHELTER. AVOID WINDOWS!

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect overnight tonight across the entire area including the city of Chicago.  Fox News Chicago Chief Meteorologist Amy Freeze says these storms could produce winds up to 70 mph, quarter size hail, and have the potential to create very heavy rainfall with localized flooding.

A slow moving front is producing high heat index-- making it feel like the triple digits just to the south of Chicago.  The high heat and humidity with an unstable airmass are likely to lead to severe thunderstorms. The areas most likely to see strong storms are North of I-80 before 8 pm.  Then the strong storms spread in their area of coverage across the entire area.

Good luck! Hope everyone is safe and secure.

Holy fuck is it ever raining here, that siren is one of the strangest noises I've ever heard too.

And as far as Canada goes. No.

I'm about an hour north of Chicago. We've had a more or less unbroken chain of thunderstorms moving through here in the last 24 hours, but we've needed it. We haven't had rain in quite awhile. The tornadoes have stayed south of here though...

Oh, silly America and your hilariously destructive weather. I bet you wish you were Canada now!

Go live in Nunavut this winter, then mock America about its weather.

yes, I have a firm belief that--when given the choice between living in a place with a myriad of environmental variations and living in a perpetually frozen winter hellhole--the wise thing to do is generally to choose the variety.

What the fuck is the matter with you people, it was thirty degrees Celsius here today.

Do you live on Ellesmere Island?

These days I can vouch for Canada. It is pretty nice there! I would rather be there than anywhere a tornado could reach.

Hey Chicago-ites, I don't care if your Internet is down. Find a way. Post here so we know you are okay, please.

Tornadoes are fun! You hunker down in your basement with family and (sometimes) friends, and they rarely materialize. This part of the midwest--northern Illinois, all of Wisconsin and Minnesota--is on the edge of that "tornado alley" that runs down the middle of the country. We get them up here, but they hardly ever cause much damage. It's not like the ones you see in places like Kansas, Missouri, Iowa. So they're not really a problem.

And I was kidding. Canada's really nice. Actually, I love Alaska, at least during the summer. 80 degrees or so and 23 hours or sunlight. Perfect.

Since the weather warnings appear to have been somewhat exaggerated, why not celebrate your survival by going to watch the Winnemac Electrons (http://www.electronsbaseball.com/) in their crucial second round play-off. They will be playing tonight at Maywood Park (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=1st+and+oak+maywood+illinois&jsv=107&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=26.43758,58.710937&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr).

Go Electrons!

Yay! Global warming!

Post by: ledhendrix on 05 Aug 2008, 04:27
Whoa, hold on there. I just read an article all about tornadoes in the New Scientist that said with Global Warming there should actually be less storm systems that produce tornadoes. With that said they then went on to mention that the trend over the past couple of years has been for there to be more weaker tornadoes and slightly less of the stronger ones.

The thing about trends is that they can always be bucked.

The midwest has always had tornadoes, hence Tornado Alley.

Finally some rain has moved a little southeast from Chicago. I talked to my friend who lives an hour south of there last night and she didn't say anything about tornadoes, so I'm guessing they're okay.

Man this storm was entertaining! You Americans really know how to go all out when it comes to crazy weather. It was pretty much lightning continually and all, and lots of loud noises. Apparently the sirens do not regularly go off this close to the city.

And then today it was 25 or so degrees. That is pretty much more variation than comes in a year back home in the space of twelve hours.

My internet has been working for all of five minutes now, hello! I am ok but the basement was severely flooded and several things were ruined, including most of the food in the fridge.

What the hell man we get Tornado warnings every damn day.

Quoted for truth.  I was at work at an adjoining county Sheriff's Office when the Greensburg tornado (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greensburg,_Kansas) hit.  I still get chills driving through there.  Hope all is well.

That was an intense electrical storm, but my power didn't go out once and none of the tornadoes actually touched down.

At least we don't get hurricanes/typhoons in Chicago.
