I've lived in the midwest all my life, and I can safely say that last night was the weirdest shit I've ever seen. For the record, I live about two blocks from Lake Michigan in the Lakeview neighborhood. We see thunderstorms and whatnot, but last night was the first time I've actually been scared of inclement weather. I spent 45 minutes hiding in my bathtub with the door locked. I opened one of the windows in my apartment to equalize the pressure and everything near it was soaked. I got lucky that nothing was fried. The sound was just unreal. It was like a siren from God (and yes, I know there were actual sirens, but this was the sound of the wind going between the buildings).
On the upside, I did meet a cute girl in my building who lives down the hall. So, bonus points for me.
