Title: Lyrics Discussion Thread
Post by: Akeboshi on 07 Aug 2008, 21:14
So, I hadn't seen a lyrics discussion thread, and I wanted to bounce around some ideas on some lyrics.  Seeing as how I am currently ADDICTED to "White Winter Hymnal" by Fleet Foxes, let's start with them.  keep in mind these lyrics must be experienced with the music and the harmonies because it is incredibly gorgeous.  The lyrics are as follows:

I was following the pack
all swallowed in their coats
with scarves of red tied ’round their throats
to keep their little heads
from fallin’ in the snow
And I turned ’round and there you go
And, Michael, you would fall
and turn the white snow red as strawberries
in the summertime

I see a couple different images here.  The most vibrant is a pack of fleeing individuals being pursued.  You have the singer talking about the pack, and they are each wrapped up warmly to survive the winter environment around them.  "with scarves of red tied ’round their throats, to keep their little heads, from fallin’ in the snow"  To me the scarves are around their necks to keep them warm (obviously), but at the same time they are being used to as a symbol to tether the body and the head together.  They're used to forcibly make the image that these people must have the scarves to survive.  And then the last three lines, the singer turns around to see a friend named Michael, most likely having been shot, fall to his death in the snow.  The imagery of blood as strawberries is not one I've heard before, and it's very powerful to me.

How about you guys, any other images or thoughts on the song?

Hmm...

Well I pretty much agree with you there, but that might just be to the wondrous powers of suggestibility...

Although when I see the pack I don't imagine people, but rather either wolves or dogs, the second being more likely because of the scarves around their throats (collars).  I am somewhat confused as to the sudden shift in subject matter, I fail to see Michael's relevance in this matter.  Are these all the lyrics to the song or an excerpt?

The blood as red as strawberries reminds me of a poem I had to write an essay on as part of the admission to an Advanced Placement Literature class.  I don't recall the title or the author, but it talked about a group of farm hands abandoning their daily chores to go berrypicking and came back with their hands stained red, and I wrote my essay on how that represented them giving in to the Id side of their psyches, placing carnal desire above responsibility, and being decorated with the consequences.  Note: Carnal in this context refers to both violence and sexuality, as does the Id - if I recall Freud's words it's what makes you want to kill and rape everything in sight.

The scarves being crucial to survival makes me think of domesticated dogs in general...most of them would be unable to survive in the wild due to their conditioning against wanton aggression and towards obedience, so perhaps the collars/scarves represent the human hand in keeping them from "falling in the snow", aka dying in the wild?

The only thing I can think of that would involve a pack of dogs and Winter would be perhaps a hunt...could the singer be describing a hunting accident?  Or could the singer be one of the animals being hunted, and is referring to a friend/companion being shot and killed and comparing it to strawberries because that's within the frame of reference for an animal?

The music presumably sets a mood for the interpretation.  Without it, I read the scarves of red as cut throats, the scene as a massacre, and I couldn't decide between the singer being an observer, a (soon-to-be) victim, or a mass killer.

Hmm; I wonder where that came from...

The way I see it, it's about a wolf/snow dog in a pack, and they're all exhausted and the only thing keeping them from simply falling down in the snow are the leashes and the person holding it. Not sure who Michael is, but I suppose it represents another person (I'd assume in the band) and them being one of the wolves, one that has fallen and is probably bleeding all over the place, or it could symbolize his scarf.

For the most part however, it's horrible to suggest a part of a song, instead of the whole.

I've got another song I like, and a few interpretations, but I'm not sure what your exact ideas were for the thread and other people posting, so I'll keep it to myself for now.

Pierce the Veil - "Kissing in Cars"
superrr sweet song. <3

As we wake up in your room
Your face is the first thing I see
The first time I've seen love
And the last I'll ever need
You remind her that your future
Will be nothing without her
Never lose her, I'm afraid
Better think of something good to say
But it's all been done more than once
I'll keep on trying
Oh god don't let me be the only one who says

No, at the top of our lungs there's no
No, such thing as too young
Second chances won't leave you alone
Then there's faith in love

She was always the one
I'll repeat it again, the one
No such thing as too young
Red lights flashing on the car we're kissing in
Call me crazy, I've always tried to remind her
That the future's just a few heartbeats away from disaster
I'm afraid that I've thrown it all away

No, at the top of our lungs, there's no
No such thing as too young
Second chances won't leave you alone [x2]

No, we'll repeat it again, there's no
No such thing as too young
Second chances won't leave you alone
Cause there's faith in love

If you kiss me goodnight
I'll know everything is alright
Second chances won't leave us alone
Won't leave us alone
Cause there's faith in love

The Wheels on the Bus
Traditional

The wheels on the bus go round and round
Round and round, round and round
The wheels on the bus go round and round
All through the town.

The wipers on the bus go "Swish, swish, swish,
Swish, swish, swish, swish, swish, swish"
The wipers on the bus go "Swish, swish, swish"
All through the town.

The door on the bus goes open and shut
Open and shut, open and shut
The door on the bus goes open and shut
All through the town.

The horn on the bus goes "Beep, beep, beep
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep"
The horn on the bus goes "Beep, beep, beep"
All through the town.

The gas on the bus goes "Glug, glug, glug
Glug, glug, glug, glug, glug, glug"
The gas on the bus goes "Glug, glug, glug"
All through the town.

The money on the bus goes "Clink, clink, clink,
Clink, clink, clink, clink, clink, clink"
The money on the bus goes "Clink, clink, clink"
All through the town.

The baby on the bus says, "Wah, wah, wah!
Wah, wah, wah, wah, wah, wah!"
The baby on the bus says, "Wah, wah, wah!"
All through the town.

The people on the bus say, "Shh, shh, shh,
Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh"
The people on the bus say, "Shh, shh, shh"
All through the town.

The mommy on the bus says, "I love you,
I love you, I love you"
The daddy on the bus says, "I love you, too"
All through the town.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!
Title: Re: Lyrics Discussion Thread
Post by: look out! Ninjas! on 28 Nov 2008, 22:16
It's definitely emo.

The wheels symbolises the pain in the artists soul, the bus symbolises the inner torment they experience every day.

The last verse symbolises the artists yearning to be loved by his parents, who never understood him and kept trying to turn him into one of endless clones with no personality or individual-ness.

When I step into place
Throw your hands in the sky
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
These girls can't have me
And it makes them fucking cry
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
On my way to court
In a suit and a tie
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
My brother's in the can
He won't be out 'til next July
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY

The people are shit
That's what I feel
I'll smash your fucking head in
That's how I'm real
Anything you need
That's what I deal
My stomach was empty
That's why it's steel

I don't trust nobody
That's why I don't blink
Whatever gets me drunk
That's what I drink
I fuck all day
That's why I stink
Bitches love the blanco
All covered in ink

The kids buy my shit
That's how I get cash
The bitches see the kids buy it
That's how I get ass
I grew up inside a strip bar
That's how I'm trash
Remy Martin in my glass
It's how I got class

Rappers got me angry
That's why they're pissed
They're all fucking garbage
That's why they're dissed
Their girls come to see me
Because they can't fuck
You'll never sell records
Because your rap sucks

I heard your shit comeback
Sayin' my name with that gun chat
Your mom's box smells like a muskrat
I'm gonna knock out you a love tap (?)
You wanna go against Chuggo, yo fuck that!
(You wanna go against Chuggo, yo fuck that!)

I'll put a sign on your back
That says "I can't rap"
And a bruise on your face
That says "I can't scrap"
The way bitches shot you down
Screams "I can't mack"
You're a filthy piece of shit
And you ain't got jack

You can catch me in the alleyway
Gettin' drunk and high
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
Smiling at every sexy bitch
That's walkin' by
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
Shots of whiskey
And bottles of Molson Dry
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
Fuckin' with me
You must really wanna die
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY

I put mayonnaise on everything
That's how I eat
Lakeshore Boulevard
That's how I'm street
Can't say no to pussy
That's how I'm weak
And I've been told
I'm only nice when I sleep

Loud with a slur
That's how I speak
In your lobby with a knife
That's how I creep
Drowned in the lake
And get found in the creek
Blue in the face
Cement surrounding your feet

You talk shit
And that was the beef
That's why I'm gonna roll up
And smash in your teeth
See that fire right there?
That was the heat
You deserve a good beating
That's my belief

See that kid stealing?
That was a thief
See those dudes behind him?
That's the police
See this dick right here?
That's my release
And when I get up
I'm coming back with a piece

You suckers know
Who's the baddest in town
I treat pussy like weed
'Coz I pass it around
I throw my hands toward your neck
And I wrap 'em around
And it'll be months before your body's
Actually found

You see this cash?
That's my seed profit
You see these rocks?
The feeds want 'em
You see these pounds?
You need chronic
I TREAT THE PAVEMENT LIKE TAMPAX
'COZ SOME BITCHES BLEED ON IT

Your album's fucking garbage
And you're living a lie
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
Your product is shit
Nobody wants to buy
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
That bitch sucks dick
But she's acting all shy
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
She brought me to her house
And I put it in her pie
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
I put it in her mouth
And I put it in her eye
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
She blew me in front of a lesbian
And another guy
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY
I called Jose for Yay
And we all got high
AHHHH C'MON FUCK A GUY

C'mon fuckin' guy, fucker!
Yo my friend you are my friend no more my friend

Wheels on the Bus is an awesome song!

I've been an assisstant teacher at an elementary school and I taught two groups of children (3rd and 4th grade) English as a second language. I would always start the lesson by singing at least one sing, which both I and the children enjoyed and apparently singing songs is a good way to learn a new languag. Anyhoo, Wheles on the Bus would rock the house!!!

Although apparently a lot of nursery rhymes (not wheels on a bus) have a "real" meaning behind them, like Ring a Ring o'Roses is supposed to be about the bubonic plague, i seem to remember.

That is only up to the second chorus. I didn't even bother with the other verse because that would be a bad use of bandwidth.

But yeah, I typed it up. Can't find an actual page with the lyrics anywhere. I have no life.

Scott Rockwood writes some freaking amazing lyrics:

Cycle of Creation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTiMyO7I1Sk)

Boy and his gun, sorceress and her wand huddled under the stoop
of a bridge for the freight train above
Rain falls down on the carcasses around of buildings that have turned to dust
Boy drums on his plate and sings her a song of worlds moved on, pieces of puzzles to solve
she puts her wand in the ash and persuades a small fire
they danced all night out in the rain showers.
They sang songs of worlds they dreamed, danced through the puddles;
the stories and puddles grew,
flames took on shapes as the pools seeped in, the steam of their union took journey on the wind.
Clouds carrying fables to inspire new lands, to build new empires and watch them wash back into sand.
Remnants sing songs of worlds they've dreamed, unaware their dreams become Adam and Eve.

Must Be Nice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnMmBlbY72c) - seems to be a song about greedy, corporate, uncaring bastards.  Not republicans, as commonly believed ;)

Must be nice, you look satisfied, the whole world cries for you. Must be nice.
Must be nice, to be the early bird, get the worm. Must be nice.
What you don't know, what you don't face comes creeping up behind you.
Must be nice to not care, not care at all about your world. Must be nice.
Must be great to drive so fast and never be late. Must be great.
Must be a rush, leave 'em in the dust, run 'em off the road. Must be a rush.
What you don't know, what you don't face comes creeping up behind you.
Must be nice to not care, not care at all about your world. Must be nice.
Must be fun bankin' in the sun, time is money. Must be fun.
Must be a hoot stashin' all the loot; greedy man shoots. Must be a hoot.
What you don't know, what you don't face comes creeping up behind you.
Must be nice to not care, not care at all about your world. Must be nice.

Johnny Walker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcLfZTebls4)
Don't have the complete lyrics to this, yet, but this is a wonderfully dark yet fun little romp about alcohol...  "Old Johnny Walker had a whore for an angel, she was out drinking when the devil came to town.  There's blood on the porch to ward off the evil don't you know that the devil is a back door man."

Consequence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0J1gyEcbQUA)
Probably one of their "edgiest" songs, the lyrics again not published yet...  the chorus is about all I know for sure, "Consequence...  in itself a defense...   what's done is done smoke has cleared from my gun, you never deny you were willing, to pay the devil his due."  The guitar work is...  phenomenal.

And, no video of this one, but "Lucky Day" / AKA "Son of a Gun"...  I believe... the intro is fantastic:  "Somewhere between what the hell, and holy shit, and I won't ever hear the end of it...  you had to do it and now it's done, you...  son of a gun, yeah, I know it hurts.   But the name you got called is the name you deserve."

To the OP:

Quote
I was following the pack
all swallowed in their coats
with scarves of red tied ’round their throats
to keep their little heads
from fallin’ in the snow
And I turned ’round and there you go
And, Michael, you would fall
and turn the white snow red as strawberries
in the summertime

I interpret songs logically, not visually, so no "imagery" per se...  I think about someone trying to break away from the herd, said herd being the "normal people" who choose to be normal to be safe.  The protagonist is trying to set themselves apart, then they look to follow someone else - someone "different" - and that someone else ends up being a bad choice, or causing them to go down a bad path.

That's my take on it.
