By "Skateboarding", do you mean the practice of standing on a skateboard and skating with one foot, then letting the skateboard glide for some time?

Or do you have some other, more... darker purpose, in mind?

Don't be offended. When you've been on the parts of the internet that I have, you learn to ask these questions before offering an opinion.

I have tried skateboarding once. Thanks to my brother being in my landing spot I still have teeth.

I used to go inline skating as a kid though, but that's not cool anymore I guess. Oh, and we had those silly little skatebikes with 1 normal wheel, 2 skateboard wheels and no steer. I had very very flexible bones as a kid, despite being terribly clumsy I've never broken anything.

I used to skate in high school, mostly because all of my friends did. I was never any good though, so I ended up being de-facto videographer. We never made any decent films.

I still have two boards sitting in my closet. I think one's got a Birdhouse deck, and the other is Chocolate.

Don't blame the Wire, man. You're giving it a bad name.

Also, there's no such thing as watching it "too much". Now if you'll excuse me, I have to wait for my season 5 discs to arrive so I can watch the whole thing, seasons 1-5, back-to-back.

I bought a very cheap board 2 years ago, tried to skate for a while, then broke it. Now I can't afford to buy a new one.

PS: All the "skaters" I know are really nice, well-behaved people.

I don't skate, but I have a friend who got sponsored by a local rideshop.  They just had a premiere, and at least two of the kids on that team should be in skate. 2 or something.

Anyways, I have few friends who skateboard, and they seem to have enough fun (but not enough to inspire me to pick it up).

I have a skateboard, but I just use it to get around on.

I'd try and actually, y'know, be good at it, but I can just do that on EA Skate or Tony Hawk's.

I longboard and its amazing, the exhilaration of zooming down the streets while effectively standing still (when not pushing) is something I just cant describe.  Unfortunately its something I didnt take with me when I moved from the Prairies to Montreal, though it should be getting sent to me within a couple of weeks so Ill be able to catch the tail end of summer.  Now while I own a skateboard Im certifiably shitty at it.  I never skated when I was younger and only got into it when I was about 21, the following year I got an actual longboard and have been going hard on that (this is year 3 with my longboard I believe).

My deck is a Sector 9 bamboo torpedo shaped board with clear griptape, Randal 180s trucks, 70mm wheels and whatever bearings I own that werent destroyed.

I have loved skateboarding and its culture for a very long time. I can't do too much but it's still one of my favorite things to do! I also got a new deck a few weeks ago and I painted a Triforce on the nose and it is so good.

Longboarding is hell of fun, too.

I used to skate quite a lot, but then I stopped, and now I'm thinking of taking out the dusty board again.

I did some skating over the summer with some friends, and it was really kind of awkward at first. I knew what I had to do, but I just couldn't get the board to do it.

If I have enough space in my luggage I might bring the board to Uni with me, who knows what will happen.

I used to skate a lot when I was younger, and I'd kind of like to get back into it now because I have several friends that do it, but I don't want to buy a new board.
Title: Re: Skateboarding?
Post by: Wasteroo on 16 Aug 2008, 17:43
I tried skateboarding when I was like 11 or something. My dad bought me an effectively useless board from Fred Meyer that was so poorly designed that it was impossible to ollie on it. My inability to do the simplest trick on it was discouraging, so I relegated it to the back of my closet, where it remains today.

I sure hope you weren't expecting anything inspirational.

I kindof want to get a longboard, but Tirana traffic is very thick and Tirana sidewalks are very crowded. I would be the only person in the whole country with a longboard, though, and that's got merit by itself.

i actually know the guys that invented mountain-boarding. if you see any mountain-boarding (or "dirt-boarding" depending) on tv, chances are you will see a guy named Leon who i used to go to school with.

he was also in a Disney movie called...i don't know...Johnny Tsunami or something stupid like that.

I also made a skit on the general subject of skateboarding when I was in college.

Title: Re: Skateboarding?
Post by: Junodog on 19 Aug 2008, 17:34
I got a skateboard when I was in middle school or something, but I failed at it because I am afraid of almost everything. I dunno where it is now. Probably in a storage unit.

I prefer snowboarding, mostly because my feet stay on the board that gives me some illusion of control that allows me to go on blacks and shit. But if I ever find someplace that's perfect for learning how to skateboard (including a lack of people so that I don't embarrass myself) then I'll give skateboarding another shot. So I guess I should find my skateboard and take it with me.

For now, though, I'll just stick with learning how to use my new heelys. That is a challenge in itself.

I also had a mountain board, mine had no brake.

Strapping yourself to a wooden board then rolling down a hill seemed like a good idea at the time but one of the trucks broke and I tumbled.

So I took the trucks off and used it as a makeshift snowboardthatcouldnotturn until I got a snowboard :)

I think Rizzo skates but he doesn't post much anymore.

These statements are both accurate-ish. I don't skate much since I got concussed... I still snowboard all the time though.
I can still ollie but that's about as far as I got. Ramp skating is super fun times though, I should learn to drop in properly!

I used to skateboard quite a lot.
Then I went to the Holy Land (i.e. Canada) and discovered longboarding.
It is now my favorite pastime for when there is no snow or I am not in it.
Thus, i skate- or longboard pretty much year-round.

I've got a Chiquita skateboard which I have never used because the graphics on it are too good to spoil, a no-name skateboard with shot trucks which I only use when it's raining, a Sector 9 swallow tail longboard with kryptonite wheels and a Flexdex fiberglass board with 70 mm flashbacks. Which is my favorite.

People that bash an entire culture or movement based on the incoherence of some of its language have _way_ better targets than skateboarding. I think it should stop.

For the first time in years I skated every night for the last week in a retail park car park. I can jump over 2 stacked 6packs of coke, or a 40oz bottle (emptied in my tummy before jumping) but still suck at anything more than jumping shit. Makes me happy though.

I remember being suckier than I am.

Only problem is people come in at 11pm and park there cars and just sit there.

When I was at school in Vancouver, I joined a group of longboarders who bombed a 6-level parkade when it was wet outside and a 3-mile hill going all the way from the campus to the beach at night. I got most of my road rash there, I learned how to longboard mostly drunk and / or high and it was absolutely brilliant.

On Saturday nights when it was raining, the parkade was packed with between 40 and 100 longboarders racing down the spirals, playing longboard hockey in the basement floor, playing music and having a raunchy good time. So good a time in fact that when campus security showed up, they usually cruised through the parkade once, then left and radioed for police support to disperse the crowd of no-gooders.
I miss that parkade.

Interesting fact:

I used to stereotype skateboarders into the kind of people i would not hang out with. Not so much because they were dumb, just because skateboarders were like teenage bikers or punks. The kind of kids who spent their weekends practicing in Martin Place.
When I found out some of my 20 something uni friends skateboarded, I realised they were normal people who were also actually smart. Now I find skateboarding kind of cool. Especially when the guys on them are hot.

Yeah my hometown Regina SK is i the the prairies with nary a hill to be found so we would crash the Cornwall or Sasktel parkades since they were the only things you could get bombing speed on.  The odd time we would go around parking lots or streets getting dragged behind a buddies car but that usually sounded better than it looked.  Then theres always the Sheet-Sail on a windy day.

now my wrist hurts and that was like 2 days ago. stupid fucking autumn sun.

in other news, my friend Tj and I are going to try to rent a house with a barn or shop this winter (if we can find a cheap one) so that we can build a ramp to skate when it's snowing and raining and shitting outside. i'm excited. i love miniramps.

Just got my longboard shipped to me today finally (its been since end of May since Ive had it).  And skated down to the boardshop and got some randal red bushings since the day I got my randals I cut up the original bushings and had to use regular skate ones (le suck).  But going from a prairie town to a hilly town is kinda scary, having to stop in the middle of traffic while going downhill will take some getting used to, and I fucking HATE heel breaking, it ruins shoes in like 2 days.

I used to skate almost every day back in highschool until most of my friends either progressed to handrails (which I wasn't down with doing) or just stopped skating in general.  I still skate occasionally now and stick to the knee-high rule for the sake of my joints: Don't skate anything much higher than my knees.  Except for mini ramps, of course.  The local shop just put one in so hopefully that'll be a good time.

Now I've really gotten into in snowboarding went up.  It has the same amazing relaxing qualities and is a ton of fun.  Also, it's a little less intimidating hucking yourself off a huge jump or down a rail knowing your not gonna land on concrete.  Needless to say, I cannot wait for the white stuff to start falling.

Still, nothing beats cruising around downtown on an autumn night with some good tunes in your headphones.
