Title: Halloween!! Costumes, parties, plans!!
Post by: Emaline on 21 Oct 2008, 17:34
Halloween is quite possibly my favorite time of the year. What do you kids have planed? Who isn't too old to dress up?

I am contemplating having a rock band 2 party. Costumes would be required. If I don't do that I may just go up to the parade, and get drunk, and dancing around. And handing out roses. I am going to be a doll. It's up in the air if I will go with my original plan to be a Coin Operated Girl, but I probably will. I am thinking of buying a bouquet of black roses, mainly because I wanted one black one for my hair, and it is cheaper to by a whole bouquet, and wouldn't it be fancy to hand out roses to strangers? Who wouldn't want a rose from a life sized doll?

So far my only problems with my costume are my make up, and my shirt. My shirt is a little... uh....low cut. As in, very very low cut. As in I am afraid of flashing people. My make up is just a pain because I can't find any powder, and grease paint looks too fake.

I am going as a pirate because I realized this year that I had never done it before. Plus I already had tall boots, cut off pants, a white ruffly blouse, and a vest. So I went to Savers and bought a hat, sword, hook, eye patch, and earring for cheap.

i'm contemplating either being a soldier or being Mario. It'll just involve a run to walmart and checking whats more easily available, a pair of fatigues or overalls.

Mario would be much cooler, especially with an egregious moustache

Halloween isn't really that big in Australia. However, we have a token American in our house, so there's been talk around my house about having a Spinal Tap themed party. I will be procuring some kind of wig and handle-bar moustache, I imagine! Or maybe I could go as Stonehenge... Hmm.

Also, Emaline, I suppose you're talking about white powder and maybe foundation as well? My advice would be to implant some kind of tracking device into a local Goth, then release them into the wild. They will undoubtedly lead you to a large cache of white powder and foundation.

yeah... i've been growing my mustache out for about a month and a half now and its really pissing me off. i can't eat without having to pick all sorts of stuff out of the corners of it at the end of the meal. So I don't think the stache is going to make it past this weekend.

I'm going as a zombie retail employee.  Cutting and burning bits of my old Michael's apron and throwing flour at my face.  Camping out in my friend's backyard, using my sleeping arrangement as a means to an end.

I'm going to the annual Halloween party at the local bar that I frequent. I'll be dressed as "the cat's pajamas": wearing pajamas, ears, a tail, and cat makeup. The new PJs I bought for the costume are so cute and warm and soft! I have to talk myself out of wearing them to bed every night because I want them to be fresh for my costume. After that, I'll probably live in them.

It's a bummer I won't be off work that day (many Nevadans are, as October 31st is also Nevada Day) or the next day, but I'm pretty excited!

P.S. I know that I won't actually be the cat's pajamas but, rather, a cat in pajamas, but I still think it's cute. My mom stole my costume idea when I told her. Bitch. At least we don't live in the same city.

As Violentdove mentioned Halloween isn't very big here and generally if kids show up at my door asking for sweets I give them a stern lecture about how we don't do that here and how asking strange people for candy is probably the dumbest thing you could do. I then proceed to force them to watch me eat a Mars Bar while I cackle madly.

This year my girlfriend is having a halloween/housewarming party at her place and I'm going as a shadow. A black gauze mask, black t-shirt, jeans and boots, black leather gloves and a black trenchcoat pretty much pull this whole thing together. I'm also not going to talk to anyone and I might follow some people around mimicking what they do.

STEAMPUNK!
Ok, yes, I hate how genres now all seem to have -punk or -core added onto the end of them but I really love this art style. I've got a tuxdeo jacket and shirt, a nice vest, and am getting a cravat. To up the punx I've got a pair of fingerless work gloves, some old school motorcycle goggles and I'm looking for a pair of engineer boots. A pocket watch is also on the "to buy" list.
Oh, and the party will consist of getting drunk with everyone on campus.

Edit: Hopefully I can get some pictures of my ensemble because I face a dilemma: with a black jacket and grey vest should I wear black or grey pants?
Title: Re: Halloween!! Costumes, parties, plans!!

Either could work but my gut says to match the vest and the trousers.

Steampunk- I hate the name, but love the aesthetic. A flintlock might be a nice addition, and consider some type of hat, maybe?

I'm thinking about going to a Halloween party as a luchador, I just need to get tights. Shouldn't be that hard. If I have time I'll get two pairs and make the crotch be like, golden or something ridiculous that. Yeah, something that's just ridiculous.

Now where do I find tights?

I was thinking of going as a washed up Joker.  I'd wear a wife beater, boxers, slippers, and the Joker makeup with my hair dyed.  Maybe even talk about the good old days with Batsy and how good Harley was for me.

I'll probably just wear my hoodie with a hockey mask again.

That reminds me, is anyone going to start a pumpkin thread or should we post them here?

I was planning on going to my local rock club but since it is closed and 'relocating' to another premises for the event, I might give it a miss. The usual DJ is away on a cruise or something and the guy who replaces her is just AWFUL. As it is it looks like I'm probably just going to a friend's party... might suggest dragging round my Xbox and Rock Band, that always ends well.

As for costume, I picked up a black and white jester / harlequin outfit and will be going with a black and white facepaint look. Did a trial run of it last Saturday and it looks pretty damn disturbing. Good times!

Next Sunday, though it is obviously not Halloween, there is a Zombie Walk (http://www.blackpoolzombiewalk.com) through my town which should be a lot of fun, I'm trying to get as many people as I know to go along. Thinking of just going as an 'average' zombie, though with some iPod earphones in... the wire leading through a blood-stained hole in my shirt, with some blood coming from my ears.

I'm surprisingly not excited about Halloween this year, though, which is odd. Usually I can't wait... this year I seem more excited about Xmas but I think that's because I've spent the last three weeks spending my entire wagepackets on other people's presents.

Zombie Walk

All this time I've spent wishing my little town was cool enough to have a large, organized zombie event of any kind and I'm not going. There's a Zombie Crawl this year, with all the major bars and clubs on the main drag participating. I don't think I have the energy or dedication to make myself up like a proper zombie. I always thought I would, but I never thought I'd have to prove it. Plus, it's on Halloween itself and I kinda have to go to the party. I guess that'll be my excuse this year.
Title: Re: Halloween!! Costumes, parties, plans!!
Post by: maxusy3k on 21 Oct 2008, 23:39
Yeah, I was amazed to see there was going to be one in Blackpool, so I feel I kind of owe it to the organisers to go, try and put Blackpool 'on the map' a bit more for events that don't revolve drunken stag / hen weekends and cheap lays. I wanted initially to go with all my friends as a zombie stag party but don't really have the time or money to organise that, get cheap and offensive t-shirts printed etc.

I'm glad it's not on Halloween, since as you said... parties to go to etc, I can't imagine it getting a big turnout if they did it then.

I've been invited to a Halloween party. Apparently it will be mandatory to wear a costume.

I ordered a new optimus prime voice changing helmet... Not so much for Halloween but more for the job interview I have soon, is a phone interview and voice changing mask and anyone who would not hire someone who sounds like Peter Cullen for a tech support call centre job is not worth working for.

Might just dress up as a dead person again as all my friends are boring and although I have been invited to a party it is far away and I will get hit on by girls I am not allowed to do because they are friends of my good female friend and she says not to. LAN centre is throwing an all nighter though...

I demand pics of everyone BTW.

I'm working on Halloween. Boo. (This situation totally didn't come about as a result of me agreeing to cover a friend's shift or anything.)

Luckily, we are not only allowed but actively encouraged to dress up. I have to check with my manager to see if there's a theme but I think I might go as a disco kitty. As in, a cat. With silver makeup and... dancing?

Guys, I just bought some silver lipstick off Ebay and now I can't pay for it because it won't accept my debit card. HOW ANNOYING. I'll have to find my cheque book tonight and delve into my savings. Huh.

My fiancee throws a big Halloween party every year with a murder mystery and gaming and pizza and good times. Costume required. I pushed for us to dress up as Zombie McCain and Zombie Palin but he can't wear a political costume to work and wouldn't do an assassination themed murder mystery. Boo. So now we're going as Jack the Ripper and Lizzie Borden which is less timely but I already have all the components for the costume except a plastic hatchet and more fake blood. I may actually wear this costume to work.

My last two costumes were Howard Hughes and a really, really dead person (gunshot plus fake knife in stomach plus slashed wrists plus green fake "poisoning" makeup... that was fun).

I don't really think that'd be worth the effort, honestly; I mean, Norton was obviously playing to a very specific stereotype in that movie, so many people are likely to see the stereotype and not the character. If you're comfortable with people thinking you're going as a plain ol' skinhead though, knock yourself out.

I am ALSO being Sarah Palin. I'm slinging a fake rifle though, hopefully, and I already have the glasses, hair, red power suit and a Minnesota accent. The best part of that is that I have an exam in a class where a girl once said "Sarah Palin is wonderful" and she was serious. Maybe I should say I'm Tina Fey as Sarah Palin instead.

There's a badass show too with a bunch of bands being other bands. One band is being the Cars, one is being Slayer, and the other is Queens of the Stone Age. All of them are local bands who I like, specially the first one. Yeah! I think I might accuse the second band of not being Christian.

I am kind of bummed though, the only Halloween ritual I've had since I moved to Fargo was to play only really good cover songs on my radio show, but I don't have that anymore :(

Also, Emaline, I suppose you're talking about white powder and maybe foundation as well? My advice would be to implant some kind of tracking device into a local Goth, then release them into the wild. They will undoubtedly lead you to a large cache of white powder and foundation.

I am, but I live in a small farming town. Goths are pretty rare here. I am sadly probably the closest thing to a goth you could find. A bit away in St. Louis, there are more goths, but I haven't met any that have been to friendly to me, and the ones that have aren't very goth. And they make fun of the other goths, and nobody wears any god damn white powder foundation. Ugh. I don't want to order it online.

Oh! The many personalities of Roddy,

As the other Aussies have already mentioned. Halloween is not a big deal here (something I lament every year).  But I guess I will go to Brisbane Friday afternoon, seeing as I will be there that weekend anyway.  if Brett only works until 9 like he thinks he might I guess we will hang out?  I'm sure there is something going on.  I probably won't dress up though.  Maybe I will go as 'rad'.  So I will just dress how I always do.

Roddy your Jack Frost costume is probably one of my favourite ever.

Guys I have all the parts to a potential excellent costume except body paint. Where do I get good paint that I can afford, that will cover my whole body, and will be opaque and true to the colour that comes out of the container? Barring that, how do I tint my own theater makeup? I have checked out Ben Nye but all of that stuff is like greasepaint, which is gross and not what I want. Also I tried liquid latex, but that is translucent and like white doesn't show up at all and blue looks green and orange looks kind of yellowy because of my skin underneath.

Post by: Boro_Bandito on 23 Oct 2008, 10:40
I agree with supersheep. Those as accessories make no sense without a costume, which should be a dirtied doctor's scrubs. And maybe a big jar with a doll inside of it. Honestly for Halloween I don't see how anyone's offended by anything anymore, not after they started making those stupid Saw movies where they've got people landing on a pile of used syringes and Hostel where a guy snips off the melted eyeball of a girl. I think nowadays the trick is to be both disgusting and politically incorrect.

I'm going to be Kitty Pryde! I'm a little surprised she is not more popular, actually. Probably going to be spending Halloween night between a co-op party and a coworkers party.
Title: Re: Halloween!! Costumes, parties, plans!!
Post by: 0bsessions on 23 Oct 2008, 13:20
Kitty Pryde is probably not a popular choice because she's not a character that really stands out. The only outfits she's ever had that really stand out are the ones she wore for like an issue at a time. Everything else is pretty generic and amount to yellow and blue spandex and a Star of David. She's never really had an iconic look that anyone would recognize her by. Storm stands out by being the only prominent black female superhero, Phoenix always stood out by her red hair and some of her iconic costumes, Psylocke had the purple hair to distinguish her. Shadowcat was always a relatively generic looking teenager in a generic looking X-Men costume.

How are you planning on selling it? This is of great interest to me.

And yes, Tommy, that makes you racist.

Last year my friends and I decided (and Brits surrounded by Americans) to go as Harry Potter characters, because it would be pretty recognisable... and we were!

My friend was Luna and she spent a good drunken half hour sitting on a street corner counting the number of girls crossing the street who looked like whores. Ah, that's the mark of a good holiday!

I'm not sure how to post an image, so I'll go try and find out how to do that and then you might get a photo.

Man if someone went as Ellen Page I would probably be in love.

Yeah, see, this is how I decided to do this. It occurred to me that my hair looks like hers at its current length, so I could pull off Juno. However I'd probably have to go as pregnant for it to really click for people, and one of my coworkers is currently very pregnant, so...I thought that'd be weird.

So then I just looked at Ellen Page's other roles.

Anyways, yes, Jon, you're right, so I did have to kind of pick and choose images to decide how I wanted to look. I've already bought the pieces so I guess I'll just share pictures after Halloween  :-D

So I got up at 3AM after a long sleep because the pattern in which I sleep is silly, start cutting up bottles for the arm bits to be optimus prime, red teeshirt, red and blue poster paints, cutting bottles with a letter opener craft knife thingy when it slips.

Is now 6.37 in the morning and I spent the last 2 hours in A&E :(

IT WON'T STOP BLEEDING

I took a sheet of skin off my finger, not even just a ut but I remove a significant amount of skin, I feel like an idiot, costume had better be worth it.

I kindof don't know what I want to be. It's probably going to be some kind of old-school punk rocker though because I've got my long curly blonde wig, a ridiculously abused budget-brand guitar (bonus points for spraypaint, stickers, and a missing middle pickup), torn jeans, and disgustingly worn-out black Chuck Taylors.

Alternately, I could just not dress up this year since it's way more effort than it's worth to actually dress up for Halloween when I live in Bumfuck.

I am going to Manda's party, and I have finally gotten shit together for the boy and I to be Peter and Lois from Family Guy. There are a few sewing alterations to be done, but I got complete costumes for both of us for like $27 at Goodwill. I'm going to dye my hair red too. Photos once it's all done.
Meanwhile, we are working at a haunted trail this month. But since we are not actors, but technicians who sit very still in the woods and push buttons, we just bundle up. I look absurd once I'm all dressed - XL flannel pajamas over my jeans, the other night I had two hats on, etc - but at least I'm warm.

Now I want to be a ninja to go with a friend who was going to be a pirate (yeah, I know I'm late), but she wants us to go as Betty and Veronica (um... way late?), since she's blonde and I'm a brunette.

...or we could just go with a few other friends as Greek gods and goddesses, which might be more appreciated if we go to the university president's house at the beginning of the night to trick or treat. (He and his wife live in the woods and give out cookies! It's adorable.)

I've got plans the day before and the day after, but not the day OF. This doesn't make sense to me, but whatever, now I can have TWO costumes. (Dobby the house elf and probably a Blood Elf Mage. The last one is for the party with my gamer friends, so it's really not that nerdy. Ok yes it is, shut up.)

I kind of wish we had a tradition in dressing up for Halloween here too. Some kids are doing it and there are a few parties somewhere I guess, but nobody I know are dressing up or going to parties so there's not really a reason for me to do it. It's a shame though, because I know it could've been fun! Oh well, studying for my finals is a good alternative I suppose...

So, I was originally going to have a rock band party on Halloween, because who wouldn't want to dress up as various things and play fake instruments, and get drunk, and rock out and all that good stuff on Halloween. However, my 360 died. No party for me. So I guess I will get drunk and go to the parade.

Rorschach
I was going to do that, but it would be too much money and effort for too little return. And where would I find purple pinstripe pants? maybe a gangster costume, but like I said, too expensive. I was going by the graphic novel look, which doesn't specify it as leather, though, I thought it was just a cloth trench coat. You could probably find one of those at a thrift store.

After she went to all the trouble of putting that outfit together however it was too cold for her to go out to the parade in that. It was such a disappointment, this year we probably aren't going to put much effort into our costumes.

My silver lipstick might arrive in time after all! I charmed the ebay seller into sending it before the cheque cashes (I rang the bank first to check that getting my card eaten by an ATM wouldn't affect the cheque, and they promised me it wouldn't).

So I can be a disco cat after all! The only problem is, I forgot to make any ears and a tail yesterday so I need to do that. I am the least crafty person ever, in all senses of the word but particularly in the sense involving glue.

Haha that is pretty good! If you got any hairspray around anywhere, you could try smoothing down some of the whispies (I know what that is like, so don't try too hard). I mean, your hair really looks cute like that, but hers always looks kind of shellacked and it would be just that much closer.

So, lacking body paint, I have few options left open for last-minute costumes. Someone make some recommendations for me off this list:

-pirate
-jeans, shirt, clogs, and a coat from the 70s
-greek sphinx
-purple-and-green faerie
-black-and-white faerie
-I could pin curl my hair and do a sort-of 40s reporter look
-a sari (I have two)
-a LotR elf which I have the costume bits for but I lost the ears, which is why it's on the bottom of the list. Also it is still at my mom's house
-some historical (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a300/calenlass/GEEKY%20THINGS/Reenactments/DSCF0013.jpg) shit (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a300/calenlass/GEEKY%20THINGS/DSCF00132.jpg)

It will be a weird kind of sphinx, though. Greek because that way I can use my hair and not have to make the egyptian head thingy, but also it will probably be black because I have black cat paws and a black cat tail (not a lion tail, unfortunately) and somewhere I have black leotards and tights from dance and, barring that, I have regular black things I could wear to keep me warm.

Mostly though it would be black because of these (http://www.cynthia-bangda.net/images/featherwings/BV4L-1.jpg).

To be perfectly honest, that seems more like Karma to me:

I don't think Shadowcat ever actually wore a New Mutants uniform (Their originals were yellow and black), she tended towards classic X-Men (Yellow and blue).

Though I wouldn't mind if I got mistaken for Karma either.

My nerd is showing:

Those images are a matter of shading, canonically speaking, her costume has typically been blue and yellow. She was, in fact, a member of the new Mutants, but that was a brief situation that lasted all of a couple issues, as I recall and I don't remember her ever being in a team uniform for it.

That all said, this is the most heinous of nit-picking on my end anyways. Provided you don't run into any severe nerds, you'll be fine. I figure the amount of people who know who the fuck Karma is are few and far between anyways.

In my area, Halloween stores usually pop up in malls and such this time of year, and they usually have face paint kits.  Craft stores often carry face paint as well.  Unfortunately, based on my face paint shopping and the quality of selection, you might have to buy a whole kit to get the black.

I was a zombie last year and it was pretty awesome, but I didn't really get to show it off because I was not of drinking age and all my friends went barhopping.  So I'm revisiting it, but better, because I am adding a cheerleader's uniform.  I'm sure it's been done, but it will be rad anyways, and people in my city are generally pretty boring so Zombie Cheerleader will seem relatively creative.  I will do cheers in a dead-eyed, zombie like fashion.

Be careful with cheep face paint, as it's generally poor quality and will end up cracking and flaking and you'll just end up looking stupid. I went as death to a party earlier in the year (which I still don't have photos to show off dammit and after the pain dried every time I moved my face even a bit to talk or eat the paint would crack and before long the complete face covering had turned into more of a phantom of the opera style mask and it didn't take long for that to flake off too. This probably wasn't helped by the fact that I put it on fairly quickly, by hand, with only a minimal second coat.

I suggest going to a local costume hire place as they probably sell body paint, and chances are its good stuff. Give yourself plenty of time to apply it and use a proper makeup sponge to put it on.

Did you maybe use too much?

I am pretty anal retentive about my face paint, and Halloween costumes, and tend to practice a lot before going out. My whole face neck and chest has to be white this Halloween. I've tried tons of different methods trying to make it look smooth, and I guess more realistic. I've found that putting a little glob of this on my face, and then taking a paint brush/blush brush, and pulling the paint away from that spot using only the edges of the brush work out really well. It gets a thin enough layer over my face so that it covers it nicely, and is still breathable. It hasn't cracked on me the few times I've worn it. And yes, I've worn it for hours of end. I also do a light(and I mean extremely light) dusting with some white eye shadow(the face paint is white as well) when I'm finished.

I can tell you how to do better white, if you want. White and naturals are simple because they are what everyone uses so they are easy to find all the components for. It is other colours that are the problems. Too bad for me that no one ever needs black or purple or blue foundations.

Edit: By better white, I mean something that will last all day no matter what you do. We did some seriously opaque white all-over jobs for dance productions that held up through four-hour performances with no touch-ups or fuck-ups. That kind of better.
Title: Re: Halloween!! Costumes, parties, plans!!
Post by: calenlass on 28 Oct 2008, 22:49
Fuck it I'll just post it anyway.

You need to get a stick of beeswax. I don't know where to get it here in the states, because Georgia doesn't have any useful non-chain stores, but I think if you can't get it in stick form places that cater to African hair types might have some (and salons might have the pure stuff). If you get the stick, break off a little chunk and roll it around in your hands until it is soft and warm, and then smear it evenly on your skin. It makes the actual pigment stay even and clean without cracking, and it comes off with makeup remover, so don't worry about it clogging your pores or whatever since you will probably only have it on for a few hours.

White theatrical foundation makeup is next. If I recall correctly from my Swan Lake days, you can get this for really pretty cheap at Sally's Beauty Supply or even CVS pharmacy (or Boots maybe, for the UK, but not sure). This is good, because you have to shatter it. This is easily done by closing the compact and dropping it on the floor or banging it against the countertop. Open the compact carefully and dump the shattered pieces into a bowl and add water until you get to a texture just thinner than a paste. Stir this up reall well and make sure all the chunks of foundation powder are dissolved. Apply using a makeup sponge, or preferably a big poofy makeup brush (the cheap kinds with synthetic bristles are actually a little better for this because the bristles are a little stiffer). Depending on what ingredients your particular brand uses, you can use talcum powder or corn starch (I think you can, anyway) for adjusting the colour and consistency and opacity. However, I have no experience with this so you will have to play with it yourself.

Of course, you can skip all of those difficult steps with the mixing and jump right in with a wet makeup sponge on the dry (intact) compressed powder in the compact, but trust me when I say that the mixing gives you a better result and (depending on how much surface area you are covering) is arguably faster. DO NOT try to substitute eyeshadow for this part, because the little shimmers of Red #40 or whatever it is will fuck it up. I actually don't know the chemistry behind this, but it doesn't work. One standard-size compact (about palm-sized, I guess?) should actually enough to cover pretty much your whole body this way, if you want; we did this for Swan Lake costumes on arms, backs, chests, faces, and necks, and usually a compact could finish three to four people.

Anyway, you need a dry and rather porous sponge on hand to blot off the extra makeup. By this I mean that you should have slopped it on and your skin should look, feel, and be very wet with makeup when you put it on, but not to the point of dripping. I know it feels like you are wasting a lot when you blot it dry, but you really aren't. I found some yellow craft sponges once that worked really well, but I have never been able to find them again so I don't know what kind they were or anything.

Last step is finishing powder. It really doesn't matter what kind you use, but it needs to be loose. If you already have something in mind (say eyeshadow) to use and it's compressed, you can try shattering this too and it should work. Otherwise, I recommend a really cool thing I happened to stumble upon in Sally Beauty Supply one day [looking for a new Super-Comb for my ridiculous hair] that was a translucent rice powder finisher, and it goes on great over any colour at all.

This shit will stay all day. It will last far beyond the sweat and heat of bodies in one of the longest and most intensive ballet productions ever with no need for touch-ups or reapplications, so it should work for whatever you want, although I don't know if it will hold up in rain. The wax keeps the makeup from smudging, smearing, sweating off, running, or anything and it looks pristine. Plus, as long as you don't leave it on long enough to clog your pores, beeswax has got some enzyme shit in it that is good for your skin, so you might even benefit from it longer term, which is always cool.

Man, fuck Sally's. I went in there earlier this month looking for white foundation, and the snotty girl there said they didn't have any. Besides just delivering bad news, she was a snotty bitch. She couldn't be assed to help me look at all, barely even looked at me, and answered her cell phone while I was asking her a question. Complete bitch.

But yeah, they didn't have any. I just bought a bunch of hair dye instead, as I tend to do.

The beeswax I know I could get at the "health food store" up the street. It's not so much a health food store as a hippie general store, so yeah.

But since I am broke, I will probably stick with what I've got. Like I said, it's been working out really well. I've already worn it for hours on end, and have had no problem. No cracking or fading.

But yeah. I will keep your instructions for next time. Because I am pretty certain there will be a next time.
Title: Re: Halloween!! Costumes, parties, plans!!
Post by: calenlass on 28 Oct 2008, 23:24
Cool. Also yeah, I think only a few of the Sally's carry cosmetics, which is weird, but the place I found the rice powder was in one that had no other cosmetics and it was right near the cash register. It is a small red package, if you're looking for it.

Oh hey also make sure the beeswax you get is pure. I used some once that I got at a hair salon that had an emulsifier in it because it was supposed to be for african hair styling and I thought it would be ok and I broke out horribly. You couldn't tell under the makeup, of couse, but after I got it off it was bad.

Eris was right:  The altoids are for fake rufies.  I might just use tic-tacs instead.  Less nasty.

i understand the costume and i understand what the mints are for. clothes are one thing, but to suggest that frat boys are all rapists is a pretty big statement. And i think making that statement says more about you than the group you are portraying.

That all said, a costume is a costume. For anyone to be offended by what someone chooses to wear on Halloween is silly.  If you want it to be more authentic I would suggest wearing a t-shirt with greek letters. if you can't find one, many stores sell this one http://www.cafepress.com/ipheltathi

On a different note, I realize this isn't the sort of message boards where you'll find many greek system members, so if you guys have any questions about the merits of being in a frat, or what my experiences were like, i'll gladly share.

Nobo, I'm not out to get all frat boys.  Just the ones who are dicks.  It's just a costume, anyway, man.  Mostly the reason I'm going with it is because it's the antithesis of what I am.  I have a few friends who aren't dicks in frats, and onewheel is probably my favoritest forumite on here, and he's in a frat.

Emaline's right, though, I should say I'm going as a bro, not a fratboy.  Where I live, they're also called fratboys, since Towson University is full of them.  And most of my friends' only experiences with fratboys were with bros.  Hence me saying I'm going as a fratboy.

That all said, a costume is a costume. For anyone to be offended by what someone chooses to wear on Halloween is silly.

As a former fratboy i'm going to have to say thats a pretty weak costume. but then again, if you're resorting to stereotypes for halloween costumes I guess I shouldn't expect much of you.

That all said, a costume is a costume. For anyone to be offended by what someone chooses to wear on Halloween is silly.

i understand the costume and i understand what the mints are for. clothes are one thing, but to suggest that frat boys are all rapists is a pretty big statement. And i think making that statement says more about you than the group you are portraying.

That all said, a costume is a costume. For anyone to be offended by what someone chooses to wear on Halloween is silly.

I guess there is a full moon or something tonight, since everybody wants to be all argumentative.

Anyway, pretty much all my friends have cancelled on me. My options now are to go to the parade alone, or go to downtown St. Louis, by myself, where I will know no one, and go to a bunch of different clubs. However, I can't go to downtown St. Louis in the daytime, wearing modest clothing, without creepy people hitting. I am not sure I care to find out what will happen if I am down there, with umm vaguely not modest at all clothing, at night.

I guess I could just wear my rain pants and my Carhartt jacket and say I'm an Alaskan fisherman. That way, I don't even have to shave. Or bathe. You get bonus candy for accuracy, right?

Yes, I do plan on trick-or-treating up on the compound despite being 6 weeks away from my 20th birthday. I'm still living with my mom as a dependant, give me a break. Break me off a piece of that Kit-Kat bar.

How did you get it so dark underneath your hood? Or is that just that lighting?

It's kind of a thick black gauze headband that, when put over my face, doubles as an awesome mask. If Lunchbox had used a flash it would probably be a little less opaque but in anything less than really bright light it is just jet black cloth that I can see through really well. Enough to be able to recognize faces and read large print books without squinting. I'm thinking of using it for my black metal band's live shows as I don't have long hair to thrash around.

My original idea was to be a shadow but, having got the final costume together and experimented a bit with how it well it moves and how easy it is to see and speak and breathe in I'm retconning it to being a nightmare. Way more fun than being a zombie something. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm going to a party that I know will have lots of really drunk, stupid people I would carry a little paring knife around because it is incredible how very threatening the costume looks if you imagine the Nightmare (that's what I'm calling it) holding a tiny silver knife. I'd post another picture to demonstrate but you know, photo rules and everything.

I am wearing my costume at this very second as I am prepping to go out for dinner in it. It came together SOOO much better than I thought it would :DDDD

Essentially, I'm my alter ego crimefighting super hero Nova-Girl. Like.. boots, spandex body suit with sequined stars all over it, matching head band, arm bracers craaazzy matching make-up. The whole colour theme is black and gold. The only thing I wish I had better was better boots, but I can pick up some later as I plan on wearing this for regular fun.

It's so ridiculous. And so awesome for the whole costume to be together. I'll post pictures of it probably tomorrrrroooow.

Also, Lunch, Where did you get the lycra? I love it.

A friend of mine named Bo is dressing up like V (from V for Vendetta). He has written this monologue and memorized it for tomorrow evening.

"Behold:  A breathing bastion of bravado and budo, better-bedecked for bloodshed than for bombastic bonanza.  But a bendy blueprint bodes best, so your belligerent banneret brandishes this, a blistering bon mot barrage to bewilder the blind and bowl over the bashful, blasting boredom to Blazes!  Between bafflement and bewitchment, you:  The blushing body, brains blown and breath bated by the banter, brazenness and brass of the babbling bastard before you!  Burdened?  Bored?  Bear with me as I bring this boisterous bombardment of bluster to its bounding bitter end.  For your burnout and besetment, blame me – the brain-stormcloud whose brilliance birthed this brutally bothersome ballad of brightest beauty:  The battling bard Bo."

He is an interesting fellow.

I know this won't change a damn thing since Halloween's tonight, but I like the movie one better.

Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition! The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.  Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me "V".

By the end of the night, I'd made A$1.10, meaning the costume more than paid for itself!

As it happens, I've been invited to another Halloween party tomorrow night. Because it'd be naff to wear the same costume twice, I'll be dressed up as something completely different. It will be a more conceptual (read: cheap) costume - stay tuned!

Not a lot of mainstream female characters in the batman universe so she just went as a nun.

What about Harley Quinn? And hey, that woman as the Penguin apparently went above and beyond to keep the theme. All I can think of is the episode of Venture Bros where they attended a costume party as Chewbacca, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker and The Batman (Or Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and The Batman).

So here is the text of the flyer for the ... thing I'm attending tonight.

Samhain Celebration
Join us for an evening of MAGIC and DIVINE PLAY

Come as God, Goddess, Ancestor, or ally.  Come embodied as the specific energy you would like to carry into the coming year - as we enter the time of death, and ultimately rebirth.  Bring an offering to share - one for the death altar - one for an altar to the living.  Bring: drums, food, instruments, flowers, your most divine mysterious self, and love.  Ritual at 11:11 PM to midnight.

For the ritual: bring something to burn as a symbol of your death, and a candle.

No alcohol please.

----

Basically I'm really excited but kinda wary.  I don't have any costume-y clothes so I think I'll go with face paint.  Not sure exactly what I'll look like.  Maybe there will be pictures later.

I have finally finished our Family Guy costumes! Tonight we shall wear them. Unfortunately, the rest of my Halloween-ing has kinda failed so far (it's only 9pm though).

We were scheduled to work late tonight, but I know there are a bunch of kids who live in our apartments and across the street. I still wanted to be able to do some of the trick-or-treat thing, so I got a bag of candy and a pumpkin-shaped bag to put it in. Robert hung it up on the door when he left the house at 4:45 this afternoon, with a little note on it that said "We have to work late tonight, but we wish you a Happy Halloween!" But we turned out to have extra people at work so I got to leave, and by the time I got home - at 6:20 p.m.! - some asshole had taken all the candy. I went out and got more, but now nobody's come by. It's all very disappointing.

I just got home.. lots of people thought my costume was awesome, which was pretty cool! I should have pics later. There was a bit where I was like "It is a harlequin outfit" and somebody was like "Harley Quinn?" which led to more conversation (mainly about how I was not a girl) but that was about as eventful as that.

In terms of actual funtiems, it was kind of a washout because, predictably, I did what other people wanted me to do and not what I wanted to do, so it ended up kind of sucking, and I didn't spend nearly as much time as I wanted to with the person I wanted to.

Still, not a bad night, and gives me enough room to say "Yes I at least did something on Halloween this year"!

Ended up going to a party, watching other people rave for an hour while catching up with friends that I hadn't seen in two years, then playing who's line is it anyway? and party quirks for several hours. There wasn't even any alcohol, but I've had the most fun I've had this semester. At one point I was playing an ex-Nazi school teacher looking after kids in detention and at another my hat was trying to eat me. Plus a pretty girl that I like kissed me, true it was just in a friendly way but goddamn its a start, I'm allowed to dream.

P.S. Also totally didn't realize that dressing up in a hot dog costume would automatically make everyone in the room shout out "Ask me about my WEINERRRR."

Only two people I met knew who I was. However, those two made it completely worth it.

Two friends did this, and I just thought the picture was so awesome it had to be shared.

My costume was FAIL.

As was work's dressing up! When I got there (wearing all black with silver lipstick and a big silver star pinned to my chest because I was being a starry night [I said it was fail]) no one else was dressed up! I borrowed a large orange and black hat from the merchandise section to make it obvious that I was dressed up for Halloween rather than just forgetful and not in uniform, and felt rather silly.

However, a few other people came in costumes a bit later on and lots of customers did. I wish I was allowed to take a camera with me because we had some awesome people in! And I can't have felt as silly as the girl who was shelf stacking in hot pants and a pink feather boa. Man she must have been cold.

I love everyone's costume! Why was my first Halloween costume so terrible? I just did not have time to make cat ears.

Awesome Rosie the Riveter costume (though technically if you want to be pedantic Rosie the Riveter was modeled after one female factory worker during the war whereas the We Can Do It! painting was modeled after another), Tania.

Liz's Friend,

There was a pirate at the party I went to too, only where you are a Good Pirate(I doubt you could ever look anything like evil), she looked just like she could be in Pirates. You know, the porno. Apparently I wasn't the first person to notice it.

Also I got to take credit for someone else's costume. This awesome beardy guy rented Life Aquatic and I was all "man, my friend is going as a a member of Team Zissou; he found a hat with the Zissou patch on it thrifting, best find ever" so I see him at the bar as Bill Murray's character. I took off my monster just enough to go "HEY! HIGH FIVE!" or something and he conceded credit to me

The halloween party was really fucking terrible. Barely anyone dressed up (which I took to mean that heaps of people came dressed as my victims) and most people who turned up were absolute arseholes and so I ended up sitting in my girlfriend's room reading Order of the Phoenix, which I actually had a really good time doing so I guess the night wasn't a total waste?

Absolutely no one in any of the three places we went knew what I was. One person thought I was the Easter Bunny and then thought I got mad because I was actually just a regular bunny. He was drunk. I guess the ears stuck up a bit high and I could have gone with a black cat and not been mistaken for a rabbit, but my pj's were super comfy.

My boyfriend went as a 4 year old who had dressed himself up as a superhero, complete with underwear outside the pants and some goggles and stuff. It was pretty brilliant.

Later that night we were walking down the street, saw a party going on, knocked on the door of the party, and ended up performing our covers of Smack That and Bump N' Grind for about 20 drunk 30-somethings.

Our Drama Club held a haunted alleyway for this thing called Halloween on Main. If I do say so myself, it was pretty epic for a zero dollar budget haunted house. We brought in almost a thousand dollars. We had everything from homeless people to floating glow-in-the-dark masks to Death himself walking around.
But yeah, it was fun.
I didn't really dress up or anything.
I missed a halloween party but from what I heard, it sucked.

We didn't get off work (haunted trail) and down to Manda's until like 1:30, by which time we were exhausted and not many people were left - but many of them we hadn't seen in a few years, so it was kinda worth it. Also, seeing my little sisters all drunkified. And our Peter and Lois costumes were a success! Mainly because Robert can do the laugh.

My roommate wore the same exact hotdog costume.  I think he's had it for years and it's starting to smell like an actual hotdog. :|

Natty Light is by no means my beer of choice, but at the time and place, options were limited and it got the job done.  I'd like to think the real Bill Nye would enjoy a tall glass of IPA or possibly some red wine.  Bonus points if it's manufactured and bottled in an eco-friendly manner.

There are actually no pictures of me in my costume, due to that I didn't go to parties or anything really in one costume, and then my secondary costume, I was a ninja, and you can't take pictures of hoodie ninjas. Because they're hiding in trees.

Lunchy I would have sworn you were taller than I am. Sheesh.

Friday morning I woke myself up sneezing. Sneezing? I have woken myself up coughing before, but never sneezing. So I went to the bathroom to blow my nose and as I passed the mirror I noticed that my eyes were red and looked a little swollen, like I had been crying or something. My phone rang then, and that is when I found out I had no voice, either.

So being chilled and a little clammy and achy all day, on top of coughing and sneezing and headaches, meant that the best I could do was find my cat ears and sit around in my pajamas. I am still sick, except without the headache now. So much for my sphinx costume. I am planning on using the idea for the Mardi Gras masque a friend is planning, instead. Unless, y'know, I get sick for that too.

I am seriously bummed. I would be pissed, but I don't have the energy. This is the second year in a row that I have done nothing for Halloween, on top of anything fun like No Pants Day, mardi gras 08, Talk Like A Pirate Day, etc being flops because my friends are stupid and lame. Last year, of course, I had work until like 11pm, and this year I was sick, but seriously this is not fair and totally not cool. Fuck biology. And jobs. And stupid friends.

i'm not sure how i feel about insulting girls and calling them sluts anytime they get a bit too naked but yeah, that's a pretty unfortunate costume.

...what is she supposed to be?  A clueless fangirl?  I know the joker isn't usually depicted by having images of his face all over his body, taped nipples, goggles, a wedgie, and the words 'why so serious.'

That's why it's bad.

At first I thought it was some sort of skin colored leotard, but that seems less and less likely with every viewing.  My favorite has to be the Joker Jason Todd one.

Oh yeah, sent her back to just links.

that first picture is pretty excellent though. THAT'S the Joker i know and love (not to speak ill of Ledger's Joker which i thought was absolutely fantastic).

Yeah, throwing that and the Poison Ivy would probably be really keen of you considering how many of us check this site from work. The last one is most definitely NSFW for most people.

Ever since katie adopted her avatar I've not considered this site SFW.

Is Katie Calenlass? And is there a thread with all of the modes by which the regulars are known? I have a hard time keeping up.

Why would there be a thread saying what our names are? It would be a pretty boring list thread, really. The closest would be the photothread when people say names when making compliments. Most people know the names of regulars because they have either been around for ages or are in gabbly, where everyone tries to use real names rather than handles. Or both, I guess.

Otherwise just do what everyone else does and try and work it out themselves? PM the person and ask if they meant a particular poster? Don't really care that much? Start a thread about it? Up to you.

This is a bit outdated now, but such a thing exists (http://www.quiki.net/wiki/Real_Names).

(As an addendum, Calenlass' 'Real Name' is not a name I have ever associated with her. Funny that.)

It's not safe to say it, if you ever speak his name out loud, he will know, and will track you down, walking across the floor of the atlantic if necessary.

I know his name! (He sent me two METAL mixes in the Very First Mixtape Exchange On This Forum Ever) But like he said I don't speak it out loud or type it either.

(Edit: I just looked; that was May 12th, 2005. For some reason, I thought it was way earlier than that)

there have been threads about it too, but they're also pretty old and i don't have the patience to go looking for them.

it isn't really all that silly i think. you hang out on the same forum for a long time and calling people by their username starts to feel pretty weird. there are a lot of regulars to keep up with, i do not see the harm in having a list people can check in case they forget.

I live with Lunchbox and I don't ever use her real name. Most people on Gabbly do not use my real name. Infact, I mostly use people's usernames because that is how I know you.

i guess it is specific to each person. i like to be called tania cos i don't know any other tanias and i much prefer being called that than ephemere. mainly my point is that i think asking someone what their name is/what they like to be referred as or having a list making a similar point is not really too big a deal. since there's a whole bunch that exist anyway, the only effort inolved is just the occasional redirection.

Man it'd be pretty great if there were a one-post, stickied thread where people could just message a mod/admin and have their username + meat name added.

So, my costume was super lame. I just dressed up as the Designated Driver (and stayed in character all night of course), complete with a D.A.R.E. shirt and a "Just Say No" sticker. It wasn't a great costume, but whatevs.

This was my favorite at the party I went to, two of my best friends:

...Why was there so much discussion over weird goth Joker girl?

Poison Ivy is HAWT.

Also, Patrick's idea is actually kind of good, although it would be creepy, since non-regulars, new people would start calling us by our real names and I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with that. Anyhow, the quicky thing is definitely dated. There are plenty of regular people here who aren't on that list (me included!)

Oh, I understand what you mean, Red, but when people are referred to as much by their real name as by their forum name, it can get confusing. I'm not suggesting people have to have their names out in the open at all, but I remember having a hard time figuring out who the hell Patrick was when he was still KimJongSick.

When it comes to real names, I knew about the Quiki, but for some dumb ass reason I felt like it'd be rather gauche to create my own quiki profile or otherwise put up info there. I should probably get checked out for social anxiety disorder or something, because that's pretty damned timid. My name shouldn't be an issue now anyway though. Alex, Stitch, Whip, Stitchy, whatever, call me what you want, because I've likely already been called it on one forum or another.

A) I really like that Poison Ivy costume, and if I am not mistaken that is the Mariott lower lobby (i.e. she was at Dragon*Con). I can't believe I missed it. I would steal her costume idea, except that she already did it at the only place I would probably ever do it, unless I decided to do it for mardi gras.

B) Richard that is ingenious. Like seriously that is probably the most creative costume idea I have seen in years.
