Title: Zune problem/question
Post by: Akeboshi on 28 Oct 2008, 08:50
This is somewhat music related, so I figured I would drop this here.

Recently my Zune software has gone pissy on me, as it no longer lets me create playlists.  I used to be able to make them under the Zune software, but now every time I try to create one I get the error "The name 'my playlist name' is invalid."  Basically I can't create a playlist because all playlist names are invalid.  The weird thing is, I haven't done anything new/different to the software or the Zune.  There may have been some firmware autoupdate, but normally when it does that it lets me know.  I have seen no such warning or update.

I am completely baffled as to WTF is wrong.  Microsoft's help boards have been immensely unhelpful, and several google queries of this similar problem have yielded no solutions at all.  Has anyone experienced this or have a solution?

Thanks in advance,
Akeboshi

I haven't had this problem mainly because I don't make playlists, but the firmware update caused my Zune to start freezing when it never had before.  I just tried making some playlists and had no problems, though.  So it might be the firmware.  Try removing and reinstalling the software?

I have this problem, too. Hopefully, they'll get an update to fix it soon.

It beats the only other alternative with the same amount of storage.

How is the Zune an improvement over the iPod?  Legitimately curious!

Well, somebody had to be an unhelpful dick and say it.  Way to help out!

Edit: Dark Flame, I don't know much about pros and cons, because I don't have one, but I think you can use third-party hard drives for it, giving it more space.  Also comes with more comfortable earphones.

Simply put: I like it more than my old iPod. Plus it has wireless features, even though I don't use them, the people that do probably like them.

ipods arent much better, I mean I'm pretty happy with my Touch, but iTunes on Windows is a real bag of dicks. I hate it. I'm not exactly happy with it on Mac either. When I can I avoid it, I do, but I can't on the touch without jumping through numerous flaming hoops. Microsoft does suck a big one though

I think it's significantly easier to use, the screen is larger and more accommodating (also prettier), and the software is pretty alright.  A little annoying, but I haven't used iTunes much to really compare.  I've mostly used iTunes just to play music on some Macs I've used in the past, but I didn't like it at all.

They don't come out with a new one every year or so.

I swear, the only reason they come out with new ones is to make a new Ipod commercial.

I'm going to go out and say that my Creative Zen Vision M is much better than any ipod. the only reason people don't buy them too much is because there aren't 8 million 'accessories'.

That and they're out of production. Honestly, I wanted a 60 gig Zen Vision W, but since it and the M are both out of production, I went with the next best thing.

The next best thing is actually the new Zen flash players (or, in the last few months, the Zen X-Fi), but only if you can afford the drop to 32GB (expandable to 64GB with a hueg SD card).

Well, 1) I don't have the money for the new ones, 2) I don't know where to buy them in anything larger than 4 gigs and 3) my music collection is too big to fit on even the 32 gig and I like to have my entire collection on me.

Also I wanted 160 GB of storage.  Only the iPod is giving me that at the moment.

Creative Zens are readily available in powers of 2GB from 2 to 32 at online retailers like Amazon.

Archos produces some real nice high-capacity devices, which aren't quite as sleek and compact as the high-capacity iPod Classic but are even fuller-featured touch- and WiFi-capable multimedia devices than the iPod Touch. Good if you take functionality over portability, otherwise probably not worth the money.

Thanks to those who actually shot me some advice.  I guess I'm just gonna have to wait for a patch because I see no fix anytime soon.

Also, I really didn't intend for this to turn into a "who's media player is better than who's" debate.

If it's worth anything, the 30gig zune I have was given to me for free, so that's why I'm using it.  I refuse to buy another apple product after what their costumer service did with my ipod.

Also, I really didn't intend for this to turn into a "who's media player is better than who's" debate.

That is basically what you get when you start a thread at all related to the general subject of media players. It is difficult to really discuss them without having someone mention the pros/cons of a particular player and someone else comparing that player to another one they prefer/dislike. So now you know better.

And there's always an asshole somebody who hates something based on who made it rather than the merits it has.  Seriously, I hate it when people do that, even if they're just joking.

Edit: Sorry if I'm sounding like an asshole myself, I just get irate about it.  I don't really know why.  Well, I do...there's this asshole (hurr hurr) at work who could be identified as a b-tard without actually having met him.  He is vehemently against everything except for Blizzard and Team Fortress 2.  And probably anime/hentai, he made the mistake of trying to make friends with the company steam account, we looked his username up and found he had memberships to websites of dubious/fetishist origin.  But he can't go one day without complaining about something, and is just plain condescending when anyone says something positive about the many things he hates.  He's basically a gigantic fucking hypocritical sycophant and everybody there hates him.  The man is 26, and his childish behaviour drives me to lash out at you guys for stupid reasons.  Sorry.

You guys can resume your talk on fixing a Zune.

You looked up his username on the web to dig up dirt on him? No wonder he doesn't like you guys

No, he likes us just fine.  But he's really obnoxious and acts like he owns the place, so we looked it up.
