Title: Wordle!
Post by: est on 29 Oct 2008, 23:10
Wordle (http://www.wordle.net) creates tag clouds out of things you throw at it.  Here is an example using the text from Jabberwocky:

Thought some people might like mucking about with it & posting the results.

Can't say I don't like the result.

Pretty much the same experiment, but with a different page.

Oh man!  My Antebellum American Novel professor is really into Wordle, and has made them for the (http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/275905/the_scarlet_letter) books (http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/228802/Wieland_(Charles_Brockden_Brown)) we've (http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/257737/Arthur_Gordon_Pym) been (http://wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/230092/Charlotte_Temple_by_Susanna_Rowson) reading (http://wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/230181/Last_of_the_Mohicans_by_J_F_Cooper) this quarter.  It's fun.

I made them after the US debates (here's the VP one (http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/230397/First_Vice_Presidential_Debate)), which is pretty interesting.

I put in the To be or not to be (http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/278353/To_be_or_not_to_be) monologue from Hamlet in there, and it appears that it cuts out all of the small insubstantial words, which ironically means that the words "To" "Be" "Or" and "Not" were all cut. Also I think I may have made a few spelling mistakes but I was doing it from memory with nothing to refer to.

Hawthorne, Cooper, and Poe are canonical, definitely, and that's part of the interest in an M.A. English course.  Why have they continued to be read, in every high school English classroom in America for going on 200 years?  And why are they read rather than authors such as Susanna Rowson?  Charlotte Temple was the most popular novel in America at its time, but no one's heard of it today.

Consider that Shakespeare is commonly read in high school classrooms, but a university campus would be remiss not to have a Shakespeare scholar holed up in an office somewhere in the English department--just because books are read in high school doesn't mean they're not worthy of critical literary study.

(Also you probably didn't read 400 pages per week in your high school English class.)

You can change that, there are the little menus at the top of the appelet that gives you the option to change the layout and colour, font and whether to take out common words. Some of these would look better if people played with the colour schemes and the fonts; it's kind of half the fun for me, to make it look more like what the text means (if that makes sense).

I haven't even taken an english class in college yet. The first time I read the titles/authors my first thought was 'oh, high school student' then I digested the entire post. I was simply commenting. English majors creep me out though, so I'm hoping to opt out of english. All I was doing was commenting, though I guess thanks to my insomnia it came out wrong. And for that, I say, sorry. (I really have to get this insomnia under control...I come off bitchier than usual...hm..)

I kind of did one based on Where Will You Go When Your Skin Cannot Contain You? by William Gay, from the Best Short Stories of 2007 collection (I think it's the best thing I've read in a loooong time...) But seeing as how I don't have my book, I just kind of ripped some stuff from a teaser-posting on the BSSC website and a few things from memory... Not that great, but OK.

Well, I kind of cheated. Since there are 187 pages of archived posts for Tommy's old account, it would take ages to compile an accurate cross-section. Not to mention, you would have to edit out all the words that the forum inserts if you used ctrl + a (i.e. quote, reply, notify) or they would likely stand out the most. So instead I only used a handful of wordy posts that Tommy has made, the majority of these being about music or liquor.

I'd be happy to see someone develop on that though.

That is interesting--I guess I just sort of assumed it was there, in the more recent debates!

This is why we don't assume.

Interestingly, though, using Wordle display functionality to make everything horizontal could make that word--"President"--a lot more obvious: something like this (http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/280439/Regan_Mondale_Debate) (I used a higher number of maximum words in that one, too, so that it'd match up better with the Obama-McCain one you posted).

Ah, yes. I've been playing with the word-count function too. I just kind of liked how the one I posted looked. Plus, I really like the "Half-And Half" or "mostly" look more then the "everything" horizontal/vertical look, so I don't click on it very often... I shall play with it more today, I think.

Part of that is a false positive though. Note that "Mr." was also very large in 84. Regan was the incumbent, so protocol dictates that he would have been referred to as "Mr. President." In our current election, neither of the candidates are previous presidents, so neither of them are addressed as Mr. President.
