Title: IRON WEEK
Post by: Allybee on 07 Nov 2008, 16:17
is next week! (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,18031.0.html)

does anyone want to do it again? I really need to! I have been really flaky about everything lately.

Quote from:
What is IRON WEEK?

The IRON in IRON WEEK refers to willpower, not hard-assedness.  IRON WEEK has a few basic principles:

IRON WEEK means no complaining.
IRON WEEK means speaking your mind (diplomatically).
IRON WEEK means looking for solutions when faced with problems.
IRON WEEK means if you say you will do something you do it on-time.

I guess this might sound pretty easy for some people here, but for others it will be like sacking up every minute of every day for a whole week.

Practical examples of the principles:

WORK:
IRON WEEK means arriving to work on-time.
IRON WEEK means you do your job as best you can.
IRON WEEK means that if you have a problem with anything at work you think about if you can change it.  If you can change it you do so.  If you can suggest a change you do so diplomatically outlining the reasons why you think it's a good change.  If you don't think you can change it you either deal with it or start looking for a new job.

FRIENDS:
IRON WEEK means no bitching about your friends.  If you have a problem with them you tell them diplomatically and see if you can sort shit out.
IRON WEEK means if you tell a friend you'll do something/be somewhere then you do it.  No piking!

(ETC)

What IRON WEEK is not:

IRON WEEK is not an excuse to tell people not involved to stop complaining/sack up.  You're doing it, not them.
IRON WEEK is not an excuse to be an opinionated asshole.
IRON WEEK is not an excuse to start fights with people.  Diplomacy is far harder than yelling at/punching someone.

No.

And to prove it, I will say right here and now that the very concept upsets me.

Actually nah, I'll do it.

Saying you're in for IRON WEEK does not mean you are in. It is just some words in all-caps. I do not want to deride people but what will you do for IRON WEEK? Figure out what you need to do for IRON WEEK, and do it. Make it yours, make yourself want it, or it's not going to do anything for you. Rather, IRON WEEK never does anything for you, you do it all for yourself.

IRON WEEK is going to all my classes, doing all my work
IRON WEEK means taking pride in my job, my school, my life, and everything I do
IRON WEEK is for being fair to people who want, expect, or deserve anything of me
IRON WEEK means fixing my body when it is broken and listening to it when it complains
IRON WEEK is accomplishing things that I want that I can reach for
IRON WEEK means depending on myself to do things

I will do these things for IRON WEEK. What is your IRON WEEK?
Title: Re: IRON WEEK
Post by: Barmymoo on 07 Nov 2008, 17:12
I will try to do this.

IRON WEEK is going to bed by at least eleven each night.
IRON WEEK is thinking twice before I speak to avoid upsetting friends.
IRON WEEK is using my time effectively.
IRON WEEK is stopping lying to my teacher about why I haven't handed in that one essay, and actually doing the essay.
IRON WEEK is concentrating fully at work and giving customers my full attention.

and if we are starting on the 10th (I am confused by what you mean by next week)
IRON WEEK is wearing a white poppy on Rememberance Day and calmly explaining its significance to anyone who asks or challenges me about it.
Title: Re: IRON WEEK
Post by: ampersandwitch on 07 Nov 2008, 17:26
IRON WEEK means baking that cake for my friend.
IRON WEEK means driving all the way down to DC because I said I would.
IRON WEEK means going to every single one of my classes and taking serious notes for all of them and do all the reading rather than just skim.
IRON WEEK means eating vegan.
IRON WEEK means sleep by 12, no exceptions.
IRON WEEK means I will not say a single foul thing about my roommate.  At all.

IRON WEEK means turning 19.

Walp, it's looking up!
Title: Re: IRON WEEK
Post by: Tom on 07 Nov 2008, 17:44
IRON WEEK means doing all my homework
IRON WEEK means getting the vast majority of my assessments done before the night before
IRON WEEK means starting a fitness regime
IRON WEEK means aiming to be ranked 1st in my classes and doing it
IRON WEEK means doing at least 2 1/2 hours of study without long breaks each evening.
IRON WEEK mean reading and writing instead of being on the internet
IRON WEEK means being more assertive and independent
IRON WEEK means getting sharper and more informed
IRON WEEK means living every week like it's IRON WEEK

Darn, I was kind of hoping for another "You as your Avatar" week

Yeah, we missed that this year. Supposed to be the last week in September if it was going to be a yearly event.

As for IRON WEEK, I'm going to start mine early, and by early I mean now, cos I see little point in spending half my IRON WEEK in the time I will be winding down from exams.

IRON WEEK means studying near constantly between now and Wednesday.
IRON WEEK means no gabbly before my exams are finished.
IRON WEEK means helping my friends organize our post exam party.
IRON WEEK means cleaning my room.
IRON WEEK means working on that gift I promised to my friend.
IRON WEEK (plus one day) means helping my brother with his job.

I'm in, and IRON WEEK to me means doing this:

IRON WEEK is committing myself to my exams, both studying intensely for them and doing my absolute best during them.
IRON WEEK is getting up early even though I don't have to (usually I get up at 12 when I have no early plans, which is every day except wednesday. Early to me means 9ish.)
IRON WEEK is not purchasing anything I don't need, and really think through it if I decide to buy anything. Spontaneous shopping is a no-no.
IRON WEEK is doing my best at work, which means doing more than is expected from me (cleaning shelves and closets, tidying up the back room, etc.)
IRON WEEK is eating healthy, no sweets allowed whatsoever.
IRON WEEK is keeping my word in everything, not backing out no matter what. If I say I'll do something, I'll do it.
IRON WEEK is not postponing things. I'm the master of postponing, but if I so much as think "Naah, I can do it later" I'll kick my own butt.
IRON WEEK is drawing/painting whenever I have the time to do it.

(I chose not to put anything about my friends or being "nice and polite" in there, because I'm good at those things anyway. I feel IRON WEEK should be about stuff I usually have trouble with. If not, there's no point doing it at all, right?)

Being a human sucks.

IRON WEEK, I am in.

IRON WEEK is telling a lady friend of mine that I really like her and would like to be more than just friends.
IRON WEEK is getting to work on time and not being so fucking late all the time considering I live not a 10 minute walk from here to there.
IRON WEEK is doing my fullest at work (Putting stock away and completely filling displays).
IRON WEEK is asking my manager if I can have a week off work before December.
IRON WEEK is making myself exercise more than I have in the past month.
IRON WEEK is going to bed at a reasonable time. 11pm when I work late mornings and 9pm when I have early mornings.
IRON WEEK is buying a fuckton of books online that I've been meaning to buy for ages.
IRON WEEK is finishing one of the books that are sitting on my nightstand.

These are basically little things that I need to get done and carry on with in the long term. IRON WEEK is a good enough excuse for me to start on them.

I will probably do them in that order too.
Title: Re: IRON WEEK
Post by: StaedlerMars on 08 Nov 2008, 02:46
So here it is:

IRON WEEK is going to the gym at least three times this week.
IRON WEEK is when I write something in my planner, I will get it done by the time that I wrote that I would get it done.
IRON WEEK is writing stuff in my planner/organizing.
IRON WEEK is attending all my lectures and tutorials, and actually paying attention.
IRON WEEK is being in bed by 12.
IRON WEEK is spending less money on food, and the money that I do spend shall be on healthy food.
IRON WEEK is not complaining about my flatmates (even though they haven't done the dishes in like three weeks; we have a dishwasher for christ's sake!)(that was the last time)
IRON WEEK is finishing all three of the major assignments that are due on friday/thursday.
IRON WEEK is IRON MONTH of NOVEMBER.which means it's all of that + not shaving!

Guys, remember that setting over-the-top expectations of yourselves, and then failing to meet them fully can lead to disappointment; whereas setting more realistic goals, given your starting point, makes it easier to succeed and so get psyched up for the next challenge.

Just saying...

IRON WEEK is showing up to work on time every day this week.
IRON WEEK is making it to Kung Fu every single day there is a class I can learn in or lead this week.
IRON WEEK is actually getting all of those Orcs for Dan built
IRON WEEK is starting to paint those Orcs so I can get them done.
IRON WEEK is being prepared to graduate in December.

THERE ARE MANY WEEKS LIKE IT, BUT THIS WEEK IS MINE. WITHOUT MY IRON WEEK, I AM NOTHING, WITHOUT ME, MY IRON WEEK IS NOTHING.
Title: Re: IRON WEEK
Post by: öde on 08 Nov 2008, 08:43
IRON WEEK is doing everything I need to do to find a job, and getting employed.
IRON WEEK is not only getting employed, but starting to do what I want to do, e.g. learn to drawn, learn to paint, learn to play guitar, learn to rock out with Reason, etc
IRON WEEK is getting around to fulfilling my commitments - helping Darryl out with his 24 hour album blog, making the Thrillow.

I won't be able to do everything in the week but I will sack my life up so I can do them soon.
Title: Re: IRON WEEK
Post by: Ladybug on 08 Nov 2008, 08:45
IRON WEEK is waking up before 8AM every day, and getting at least 8 hours of sleep.
IRON WEEK is working out Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
IRON WEEK is drinking no more than 0,5L of Pepsi Max every day. Seriously.
IRON WEEK is getting up and doing something, anything, instead of sitting around, feeling sorry for myself when I am bored.
IRON WEEK is feeling good about my choice of career path, and studying every day, because I really am quite lucky to get a practically free and good education in a field that interests me.
IRON WEEK is doing every task that would take less than 10 minutes now instead of postponing it and having it in the back of my mind, stressing me out.
IRON WEEK is going to the very few classes I have, because even a horrible lecture is worse than no lecture, but 2 hours of IRC and random shit online.
IRON WEEK is just a start, potential real change will take time. But it is a good start, and even nothing but a good start is better than nothing at all.

Oh man I need this right now. Thanks for bringing it up Ally (also this is comfirming that you are the Allybee I thought you might be, hooray).

IRON WEEK is not spending my nights drinking alone till three playing WAR to keep my mind off how much of a waste the last six months of my life have been.
IRON WEEK is not doing things half assed both at home and at work.
IRON WEEK is getting a god-damn haircut already? Honestly this one will be hard.
IRON WEEK is eating at least two decent meals a day and cooking dinner instead of just grabbing something from the freezer (c'mon, lasange is easy and will feed me for days).
IRON WEEK is asking for those days off that I would like and not just leaving it until it's too late.
IRON WEEK is at least talking to a friend I haven't seen in too long and really should.
IRON WEEK is not spending too much money this week so that come payday on tuesday I'll be able to afford tickets to Sydney and back in february.
IRON WEEK is probably not going to be figuring out what I need to do to solve all my problems but goddamn I'd love for that to happen.

This is exactly what I need.

Iron week for me?

--Work my ass off, reading all the books I need to do my research for classes and papers (not just looking in the index and taking key passages to learn enough to BS my way to an A). More importantly, not put my paper off until the last moment; that is, working on it every day during the week.

--End my recently acquired slothful ways. Get back to working out. Run, lift weights, stretch, do push-ups and sit-ups.

--Stop putting off my desire to begin meditating in depth again with excuses about how busy I am. Find a calm place where I can be alone, and get back to meditating.

--Spend as much time as possible with my girlfriend, but also firmly tell her that I need time to myself to do all of the aforementioned things.

--Not complain about these tasks!

Oh hey it actually is IRON WEEK, awesome.

I guess seeing as IRON WEEK means Han's gone up to visit her folks and TCOB in Newcastle my IRON WEEK is gonna be all about finishing off the workstation upgrades I started two weeks ago and TCOB down here in Sydney.  So yeah, IRON WEEK means working back almost every evening this week to get every machine up to date with the latest versions of our antivirus software, zip software & Acrobat and putting into place tweaks to Firefox & Thunderbird so that they update from an internal server rather than Mozilla's servers.

IRON WEEK also means getting my home Gentoo system up and running so I can start using it as a centralised, backed-up file server.

I can do this!

I mentioned it in the blog post. I have a severe sinus infection which is causing me preventing me from breathing correctly in my sleep and thus, I am permanently at risk of sleep apnea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea)

i don't remember you saying that in the blog thread, strangely enough. maybe i am just choosing not to remember because sleep apnea is one of those things that freaks me the hell out and i don't want to think about it or read any more about it than i already have.  :| anyway, i am not the most supportive person on the internets but if i knew you in real life i would be able to say something more reassuring and give you a hug if need be. for now i'm just going to have to tell you to be a man.

Is it too late to call an IRON WEEK? I think I need one.

IRON WEEK is doing all my work and going to all my classes.
IRON WEEK is eating and sleeping properly.
IRON WEEK is no pot. Sorry, pot.
IRON WEEK is calling my parents and letting them know I'm still alive.
IRON WEEK is actually getting work done in the weekend that follows.
Title: Re: IRON WEEK
Post by: Darkbluerabbit on 09 Nov 2008, 17:21
Tommy, my mom had surgery on her sinuses and her face looks exactly the same.  No scars or anything.

I should probably do this, since I spent all of last week using the election and a road race as excuses to not do anything.

IRON WEEK will be:
Going to every class.
Doing every math assignment.
Spending at least 6 hours in the print studio.
Registering for a 5k even though I am still sore from most recent race.
Clean my apartment so the city inspectors are not appalled on Tuesday.
Doing the dishes at least twice.

Basically, Iron week will be doing things I should be doing anyway.

Man, I've been lazy this entire semester, I should hop on the ball ans actually try for a week so my grades at the end of the semester don't look like the outcome of a slasher movie.

Iron week will be...

Not skipping a single class this week, including macroeconomics.
finishing up them pesky storyboards,
doing that stupid annotated bibliography and my second paper for history of film. On time.
doing my macroeconomics homework tonight.
Learn something new at my internship this week.

Okay, maybe not quite IRON, but I'll settle for aluminum.

My IRON WEEK has hit a snag straight out of the gate.  Seems I have acute gastroenteritis, so I am at home today instead of at work doing all the things I want to do in there.

However!  IRON WEEK is a state of mind, so I have applied it to the situation at hand.  Usually I am an idiot and kind of just lay about in bed instead of going to a doctor.  IRON WEEK means looking after yourself properly, so I took myself up to the doctor, got some advice and some tablets.  Also, while I cannot do the work I wanted to do at the office today I can use the time I have at home to build the linux file server I want to get set up instead.

Hell yeah Ben. o/ Being productive while home sick is the ultimate self-determination.

I'm calling an IRON WEEK since it's still Friday night here.

This IRON WEEK I will:

- not skip a single class
- break off a relationship which I don't really want to be in but have lacked the emotional strength to end until now
- finally look for a job for more than five minutes
- kick my own ass training in my martial arts classes (this isn't really hard as I enjoy this but still)

Hey can I do IRON WEEK? Interestingly enough it coincides with Hell Week for my school play, so I will be at school until 10:30 every day and not whining about it at all. Which is what it means for me, because traditionally whining about Hell Week is how all of us pretend to excuse ourselves from doing our homework. So IRON WEEK means I will find time to do all of my schoolwork, and not whine about barely even going home every night.

oh hey, IRON WEEK. I didn't know this, but I have been participating in this anyway! For me...

IRON WEEK means getting up early and unpacking my things rather than procrastinating
IRON WEEK means organising my room so it is tidy.
IRON WEEK means staying at home rather than at Mum's place because I am worried about hurting her feelings.
IRON WEEK means making appointments for various things that need appointments made.
IRON WEEK means spending time with my family and not getting annoyed at them all (failed a little with this one already)
IRON WEEK means driving through Sydney and not complaining about it the whole time. (probably will fail this one)
IRON WEEK means maybe working out why I have had a headache for two days rather than just hoping it's dehydration.

I was kind of hoping IRON WEEK was next week, because then I would be all RAWR GET A JOB, but seeing it's this week I will have to deal, I guess. Maybe I will stay in my pyjamas all next week instead.

My Iron Week went a bit wrong because I didn't get to bed by eleven last night, since I had no duvet (the cat had urinated on it) so I had to find another. However, I have been making a real effort to stop jokingly insulting my friends and one of them has been reminding me every time I say something that could be taken as mean. She said that although she is never offended and knows I don't mean it, she will remind me "what was your second resolution?" to help me. I'm glad; I think I insult people too readily and one day I will genuinely upset someone without meaning to.

The using my time effectively thing is starting now! I am going to work for at least an hour after I eat.

I'm being sort of balls at this so far. I kept expecting that my knees would be better as soon as someone waved some magic medicine at them, but no, they're not. Due to pain and discomfort, I haven't been to my classes, but since I'm not going to be better immediately, I have to get a working plan going for how I am going to do things.
Basically there are actual cripples out there who can not walk ever and presumably I will be able to comfortably walk again in the future, so I should be able to suss out how to wash dishes and cook food with sore legs. I should not be using my pain as a crutch to avoid work. I think it goes back to a tendency I have, like others, to get into this mode where pity is expected for the infirm. It's nice to have an excuse not to do things and to have people pay attention to me and be nice to me, but really, I'd rather be able to go for long bike rides to nowhere.
So I'm not being Iron at all, I'm just letting myself think an injury means I'm special.
Injured deer get eaten, injured wolves starve. Gotta keep up.

IRON WEEK means not letting yourself let you down.
IRON WEEK is doing no less than you can when you have problems.

My IRON WEEK is doing alright. I have been getting up at 6:30 every morning to drop my mum off at her carpool partner's house, so I have been organising my room and only procrastinating a little. Talking to my family makes me think the my headache is from eye strain, so I have to wait until Friday to get my eyes checked and see if that is what it really is. I only lost my temper at my family once so far (my brother kept hanging around, so I yelled at him) so I have been doing better than I usually do.

So I probably would be doing all this anyway, but... IRON WEEK wooooooo!

These are the things that I have completely failed at so far; they are also all of the things that I intended to do. Man I am shit at being a person who does things.

Incidently Dovey, Phaedra, and umm, shit whoever else was in perth (I know there were more of you; some dude who I mistake for dimmukane? And Jenno not that he's posted for like a year and a half) Nick Motherfucking Cave and the Goddamn Badseeds on the 20th of January at the belviuor ampitheater tickets from heatseeker holy shit he doesn't hate perth. It's not well advertised so consider this me officially telling you people (I'd make a thread but I have this handy relfex where I do not make threads on this forum when I am drunk (but this other forum well all bets are off and I think they all think I'm a dick)). The first I heard of it was when I was buying tickets for the Mountain Goats and noticed the nick cave ones on the same site. Also the PIAF closing night will be fucking great with Mogwai playing the set and Dan Motherfucking Deacon doing the afterparty (free from maybe 10:30?). That's the night before my birthday going into the morning of my birthday so I think I will treat myself to that and write it off as a birthday present.

[edit] Belvouir?

[another edit] Belviour.

[third edit] Belvoir.

IRON WEEK is showing up to work on time every day this week. So far I'm doing great!
IRON WEEK is making it to Kung Fu every single day there is a class I can learn in or lead this week. I missed Tuesday, but that was because my nana went into the hospital.
IRON WEEK is actually getting all of those Orcs for Dan built Yeah, they're all built just need to drop a few rocks on the bases and prime them
IRON WEEK is starting to paint those Orcs so I can get them done.
IRON WEEK is being prepared to graduate in December. I know that I'm totally ready for this as far as the form goes, I just need to show up.

My Iron Week is turning out pretty strong so far.

I will try to do this.

IRON WEEK is going to bed by at least eleven each night. Well, I haven't managed it yet but aiming to has meant I've got a lot more sleep so far!
IRON WEEK is thinking twice before I speak to avoid upsetting friends. Seems to be harder than I thought, I am a bad person.
IRON WEEK is using my time effectively. Although today I spent most of the day at the cinema, I've been doing more work than usual and become editor of the student newspaper!
IRON WEEK is stopping lying to my teacher about why I haven't handed in that one essay, and actually doing the essay. I just did it.
IRON WEEK is concentrating fully at work and giving customers my full attention. Hmm. This one has failed since I haven't worked yet this week but we'll see how it goes tomorrow!

and if we are starting on the 10th (I am confused by what you mean by next week)
IRON WEEK is wearing a white poppy on Rememberance Day and calmly explaining its significance to anyone who asks or challenges me about it. I wore it, and it was fine. I was pleased.

An unexpected IRON WEEK bonus was getting two university offers and my mother suggesting she buys me a moped so that I have a bit more independence (we can't afford a car). So things are doing ok!

I guess IRON WEEK for me will be going through with my first stand-up open mic night on Tuesday and not pussying out at the last minute because of stage fright.

So I did go through with this, and it went unfathomably well. I actually killed, I'm so pleased.

IRON WEEK is cleaning the damn house as best as time allows. Did this!
IRON WEEK is not bitching about all the things stressing me out. I will also try not get get angry about it, either. Did this, too, but it's because things got better.
IRON WEEK is finishing the hat I'm working on. It's not quite finished, but it will be soon.
IRON WEEK is getting the leaves out of the yard before it rains/snows. Especially the drive way. Uh, I didn't do this. I hung out with friends instead. >.>
IRON WEEK is also doing an album cover for Darryl. Today I bought some tape so I can stretch some watercolor paper. Still working on this.
IRON WEEK is also finishing that album from May. I have not touched this and at this point, I don't think I will.

I guess I will play.

For IRON WEEK I will actually finish my two English papers and sack up and make that appointment with my English professor to tell him why I never turned the first one in. I will also be on time to both of my German classes and not skip either even though the professor doesn't care if we are there or not. I will help my group with my english project so that I won't be the cause of us failing. I will actually read my trig chapters and make up all the homework I have missed, so that I might not fail the exam and the class outright, and so that even if I have to take the class again it will be because I got a D instead of F (it is ok, though, because it's trig).

I will not flip out or get angry at anything my housemates do that is stupid or irrational, because people are irrational and even though I am in therapy for this because I still don't get it, it is high time I sacked up and just accepted it. I am seriously sick of that whole fact of life where you can only control and change yourself and I wish other people would conform to my standards for even just one fucking day, but I think I can deal with it for a week and it will be a good start.

And when I go to get my stitches out on Friday I will not react to anything they do to me by crying like a baby or having wussy panic attacks because of needles. This may or may not happen, though, considering how much control I [don't] have over it.

I did this. It feels good. I am now going to go out and drink.

i smoke. i like smoking. i don't think i'm a stupid disgusting person who constantly smells and tastes like an ashtray. contrary to popular belief, i do not sit around all day and smoke but rather spend the majority of my day going about doing regular people things like everyone else. crazy i know!
Title: Re: IRON WEEK
Post by: Lines on 15 Nov 2008, 12:09
I smoke (on and off) and I don't smell like an ashtray. I usually have something to drink when I'm smoking and chew gum afterwards and I almost always smoke outside, so the smell doesn't cling to my clothes or hair. I think it really depends on what, how much, and where you smoke that determines whether or not you are going to smell/taste like an ashtray.

But I can understand where Liz is coming from. Some people reek of smoke and judging from the smell, I'd guess they'd taste like it too. But there's also people who don't.

Well, I did most of these things! I got annoyed at my family a few times (but i think I was justified in doing so), and my room isn't as tidy as it was supposed to be. However I got my eyes checked, my car fixed, my headache went away by itself (after 3 days, goddamnit), and I didn't whinge about having to go to Sydney (and didn't get lost or in an accident in the process). I did stay at mum's place all week, but that is because I would have had tog get up earlier to go pick her up and I am lazy, so it was simpler to stay there. I also decided halfway through getting ym stuff unpacked that I would rearrange my room, giving myself more work to do! It does look nice now, though.

And it seems that Iron Week is continuing into this week so far. I have been doing housework this morning, and am looking online for jobs. Later today I'll probably go for a walk to see if places around here are looking for people, so I am being productive!
