Title: Year End Goals?
Post by: nobo on 14 Nov 2008, 17:08
There are 7 weeks left til the end of the year. I propose we have a year end goal challenge, like of like IRON WEEK but for the next 7 weeks.

In the next 7 weeks my goals are:

1. Drop under 200 lbs in weight (currently at ~210)
2. Finish both of my projects at work
3. Find a new place to live
4. Figure out how to propose to the gf

1. Get a new job.
2. Get around to getting my X-Men tattoo (this will be a direct result of the new job)
3. Scrape together more spending money for my trip to the US.
4. Hug people who deserve it (So. Easy.)

I was going to say things about getting offered the place in the honours class I applied for for next year but I've submitted my application, there really isn't anything I can do at this point.

Basically this but on my right shoulder (I like symmetry). It's kind of blurry but you get the idea.

Also I'm going to add in 5. Lose some weight or start going for long walks or something.

Once I get finished with all the major assignments (two papers and a 3D modeling assignment, rest should be cake), start actually exercising instead of sitting in front of the computer doing homework.  I used to do 100 sit-ups and 50 pushups 3 days a week, but I haven't found time for two months.  If I can lose 5 pounds by the end of the year, I'll be pleased.  I'll leave the next 20 for New Year's resolutions.

finish knitting those wrist warmers i started back in june
get my flat stomach back

i won't be able to do much else with my life other than school until i finish exams in december, and then i doubt i'll want to do much in the way of hard work. these will be good enough.

I'm a game design student, so no CAD.  Took a class in high school for that, though.  Nah, we gotta do some form of keyframe animation in 3DS Max.  He hasn't given out the assignment yet, so I don't really know the details.  I don't expect it to be hard, really, just time-consuming.

I watched my buddy do some work with MAYA and it was very difficult to follow. From what I could understand you guys work with creating surface meshes? or wire frames? something like that?  very different from the CAD modeling i do.

Post by: Dimmukane on 14 Nov 2008, 19:29
Joe's the expert on this board.  Right now we're just working with editable poly's, our teacher warned us against meshes.  It's basically an introductory course, but it's an advanced topic anyways.  It's kind of like CAD, except we strive for efficiency instead of visual accuracy (lower polygon count while not looking too different from the concept art), and there's less of a focus on symmetry.

Can you walk me through how you would model something like a human character that is meant to move like a real person?

Would you start with a stick skeleton with joints that move? and then build mass around it?
Title: Re: Year End Goals?
Post by: Dimmukane on 14 Nov 2008, 19:51
I think that's actually what the next assignment is.  I've made a model and I've keyframed a skeleton, but never combined the two.  Also, 3DS Max isn't really a strong animation tool, Maya and SoftImage XSI are better for that.

Our teacher has been lecturing us on it, though.  The newest version of Max lets you create a bipedal skeleton instantly, which you can animate.  What our teacher did was throw together a quick human model, skin it (so you can attach the bones) and attach the bones of the skeleton to the appropriate parts of the model, and then use a walking template to animate it, raising steps and rotating the path it followed.  You can scale the bones to change the amount of influence they have when animating.  He's been modeling for 15 years, so he threw this together in about an hour and a half.  He also showed us a script that generated bones for facial animation (normally you have to handplace each one).

But I don't really know enough about that yet.  There are quite a few tutorials and things floating around the internet, though.

2. Succeed in moving into this flat.

4. Grow a metaphorical spine.
5. Not be making money from annoying strangers on the phone.
Title: Re: Year End Goals?
Post by: Barmymoo on 15 Nov 2008, 11:50
I was thinking about this earlier actually, how coincidental!

I think the two main things I want to do are:

Manage my time better. This is an on-going project and it seems to be looking up. I'm very very busy at the moment, which makes me a lot more focused, and I'm also happy which helps too. I have exams in January so I'm going to revise hard for them and get some time off work to let me  get enough sleep before them.

Stop bursting into tears when customers are rude to me. This happened again today when I asked a boy for ID to buy a 15 computer game (he was not fifteen) and his dad started shouting that it was him who was buying it (not relevant or true) and that it was unacceptable and blah blah blah. My supervisors all say I was doing the right thing and to take no notice but that doesn't seem to make a difference, I just cry anyway.

Other things are like saving up, letting people know how much I appreciate them and being the goddamn best editor ever. And the best film maker. And basically doing everything as well as I possibly can.

5.) Find out a way to let my dream girl know that she is the best of all things, without sounding overly creepy.

i have never pissed myself but i did make my friend in a coffee shop once. i don't remember what exactly i was saying but it was really hilarious and she kept laughing and saying "please stop, you need to stop, i'm going to pee myself" so of course i continued cos i didn't think she was serious. and then she actually did it, and we sort of sat there for a minute or so trying to figure out what exactly had just happened and also how we were going to get her out of there and explain a pee-soaked chair.

i felt sort of guilty about this, but at the same time pretty good about myself on account this served to provide irrefutable evidence that i am incredibly funny.

Stop bursting into tears when customers are rude to me.

Oh man. Why are so many people dicks when it comes to retail? Unfortunately, you will get used to it. The vast majority of the jerks are people who know they're doing something wrong, it's just them being defensive. Not two weeks ago this lady with gray hair was trying to rent movies on this account for a 22 year old woman. This was not the right person so I asked to see her ID and she said the worst excuse ever "No, I have my sister's ID but not my own WHY" and she was getting increasingly rude so I was finally like "WELL YOU SEE HER MOTHER IN LAW KEEPS TRYING TO RENT ON THIS ACCOUNT." She eventually grabbed my computer -twice- to twist it toward her so I said I'm not renting to you no matter what now, so you need to leave. I wasn't going to rent to her anyway considering that I guess would be a form of identity theft to us also she had her own account where she was banned from the store for being a jerky mcasshole. I told my boss about all the "fuck you!" and "fuck this store!" and how it's "just me and that other lady [the manager is the other lady, I've been there three years] who give her fucking problems". Now I have permission to call the police if she ever steps foot into my store again! So yay!

So really that was kind of bloggy, but my point is that maybe like me you'll eventually learn to enjoy it when someone is a dickface to you, especially when it bites them in the ass. It also helps that we have a "stupid customer stories" account so we can vent.

My goal is to not get irrationally angry at the boy.
Watch as many new releases as I can so I'm not all "NURR I DUNNO" when a customer asks me about it
Cook real food sometimes
do my laundry more than once a month

1. I declined 'cos I decided that I
2. do not believe in the new year anymore
3. and you must confess that at times like these
4. hopefulness is tantamount to hopelessness, and I accept that it's time for a change but not in
5. places like this with people like these.

In seriousness I do not really have any year end goals, since I have managed to both complete uni and get a real job in the last few weeks so I feel like that gives me plenty of time to do nothing with for the rest of the year. I guess I do have to come up with a good one-year-anniversary thing for my girlfriend, since we met on new years.
