Title: Pets.
Post by: TwistedRemedy on 20 Nov 2008, 22:49
So.. I was bored.. (And waiting on the comic) so I clicked on the random button a few times.
It looks like only Dora and Sven have a pet.
They both have a cat.
They're the only people in the comic with a pet, they're related and they both have cats.
One white and one black.
Made me laugh a little.. I don't think I've seen any other pets in the comic.

So I was wondering what sort of pets everyone else has/has in their life.

I've.. had.. a few.

In my short lifetime.. I've (Including the family members that I live with..) had

Dogs: 9
Cats: 10
Gerbils: 2 (Named them after my parents, the twin's cat ate them.)
Hamsters: 4
Birds: 3
Squirrels: 2 (Briefly)
Turtles: 2
Chinchillas: 7
Iguana: 1
Ferrets: 1
Fish: ...way too many to remember. Had three betas. TONS of gold fish... Had a salt water aquarium with a horseshoe crap, urchin, some intruding fire worm thing, and a bunch of pretty fish.

My favorite of the lot?
Tuesday, my ferret. As of now she's my favorite. She's a nice size where she can be really playful but not hurt me while going about it. She sleeps on my stomach when I sleep, or my lap when I'm on the computer. She does her little war dance around my room. She chases the dogs away. She pooped on my boyfriend. She escapes my room by scaling a baby fence-- climbs onto a desk and then jumps at my dad. She's overall just awesome.

Chow, my first chinchilla, would have to be second on the list..
He wasn't really something I could play with.. and if I picked him up and scared him.. he'd release all his fur and wiggle away. He was cool though. My shoulder was his throne. He'd give me kisses and do back flips off of the walls.. but.. yeah.. couldn't really play with him. He was just good for cuddling. Soft as hell.

Pets that I've always wanted but never had? Uhh... I like horses. I don't know if I have what it takes to care for one yet... but maybe in the future. I've always wanted a pet fox though. ..I'm the type of person that wants to bring everything home. I drove my parents nuts.

Sooo. I guess what I'm getting at is-

1. List of pets you have/or had
2. Favorites? Least favorites?
3.Any desire to get a new pet, or just think having one would be cool?

Or anything else pet related would be cool. :P Pictures are nifty as well.

***I hope this is in the right place

Seriously. That is a lot of chinchillas. Man, what the hell? Looking at that list, over all you have had a lot of pets. How old are you?

Anyway, right now I have a dog, and I am trying to get rid of her. I'd like to get a rat, but hell, considering that I am fed up with my dog, I don't see how getting a rat, which will require a lot more attention, is a good idea right now. Plus, I've got too much shit going on to take care of anyone else. So I'd rather not bring any animal into this situation. Maybe once I have found a place to settle, and things start to calm down, I will get myself a pet rat, but until then I don't need to worry about getting another pet.

Yeah, seven. One male, six female. The women were crazy. They were mean. I hated them all.
When I let them out of their cages.. it would be like furry bouncy balls all over the room.
I'm 18.

And I laughed a little while reading that. i'm not sure if i'm just tired and laughing at everything.. but. ha. My dad says dogs are just like having another kid- but they don't grow up. Smaller pets are nice.. they're not so attention needy.

I have a bunch of birds. I used to have a dog too. He was a bad-ass dog.

My friend had a couple of hamsters and they bred and then she ended up with seventeen of them; this led to her once prefacing a story with "when I had seventeen hamsters", which is now one of my favorite phrases ever.

With my dog, I fill her food dish up maybe twice a day, same with water(both I usually full, she doesn't starve). I let her out to do what she needs. And she entertains herself. She is pretty self suficiant.

If I had a rat, I'd need to change its water at least once a day(maybe more because I am anal retentive and would worry it wasn't clean enough). I'd have to feed it dry food in one dish, wet food in another, and I'd have to monitor treats. I'd have to clean it's cage, once a week if I am being an ok owner, and cleaning out all the nasty spots as soon as I spot them if I want to be an awesome owner. Plus, rats are very social creatures, and unlike my dog who can roam around my house and play with my siblings, a rat would spend most of its day in a cage. I'd need to take it out every night to play with it, and socialize with it.

I am kinda thinking the rat is more needy than the dog.

Also, this is what you get when you wake up a chihuahua at 2 in the morning just to put a picture of her up in this thread.

I wish more people though of pets as "children."

The shelter in my college town basically will not adopt to students, because too many students say, "hey, my lease allows pets, so I can get a pet!" forgetting that most pets live for seven to fourteen years, not for the duration of a lease.

@ Alex Oh god. I had to put my head on the desk until I could breathe again. She's a cutey. XD My grandma has four chihuahuas. They're spoiled beyond belief. ( I also think they're evil)

@Emaline
I'm sort of jealous.
My current dogs, Dusty and Daisy, are the most clingy things. They're not little dogs either. They're pretty big. They think they are lap dogs though.
Daisy has this high pitched whine she does when she wants attention, or when she's bored.
I wake up to that every morning around five.
Not much fun.
Thankfully.. Tuesday is litter trained. I just have to dump it every week.

@Blue I know. I'm a little.. a.. biased maybe. I like animals, a lot. I'd feel bad for an animal before I'd feel bad for a person. When I see things like someone abandoning their pet, or abusing it, or just neglecting it... I get pissed.
I judge a lot of people by the way they treat an animal.
Weird maybe.
But if someone.. for no reason other then amusement beats an* animal. They're scum.

*Not and

but he's always up to something. Normally it involves shitting on the carpet because you did something he didn't like.

I also have a big dog (http://photos-f.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v133/0/15/527722873/n527722873_174101_7701.jpg), a cat (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v663/Lapuz/animals/willowow2.jpg) and a rabbit (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v663/Lapuz/animals/bubbles2.jpg). My Stoner's probably going to die soon, which is a bit sad.

That's quite a few pets.  I've never been a fan of rodents as pets, though... that many glorified squirrels? :P

I've heard mixed things about ferrets... that they can be fun, but can also be quite stinky.  From what I've seen of them, though, their natural inquisitiveness and playfulness probably makes up for the smell, and you could always break out the Febreeze, I guess.

Your dream of owning a fox might be feasible (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tame_Silver_Fox).  Granted, it sounds like they're no more foxes than Siberian Huskies are wolves.

My family's always been big on dogs, and particularly shelties.  They're big enough to be called dogs (unlike the giant yipping rats a lot of people seem to favor :P ), but still small enough to comfortably fit in an apartment or small home.  They're also extremely intelligent - wikipedia mentions they ranked 6th out of 132 breeds tested, and I can certainly back that up with first-hand experience from raising them.  They do tend to be pretty vocal, but because they ARE pretty damn smart, it's not too hard to train them out of that habit.  I'm scouring local animal shelters (no reason to buy from a breeder when you can adopt and save a pooch from the gas) for an adolescent sheltie, but no luck so far.  For those that've never seen a sheltie, the most common coat variation (called sable) makes them look very much like a miniature Collie - wikipedia has a great picture here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Rigsroxymorton.jpg).  The dog on the lower right is a Welsh Corgi (also a good dog breed.)

We've had a few cats over the years, but I've never much liked em, save one that we called Joecat.

Dylan, the newest addition to the Zoo.
Actually it's not that much of a Zoo any more, my hamster died this summer and my sister's hamster died just after Christmas, so it's just us and the three cats.
Dyl is a beast actually, solid muscle, and he's such a sweetheart. So much nicer than the girls.

This is my sweet sweet dog with the worst name! We adopted her from the shelter and they'd named her Princess there >.<
I would love to have her at my apartment, because she is very bonded to me and my parents don't have much time to play with/walk her, but there is a 20lb limit for pets in the building. She weighs about 75, so no-go :(

God, I hate ferrets. I had one for a while, but they're just terrible. They smell like ass and they get into everything. My old roommate had ferrets that wandered the house. I once caught one of them trying to chew on shit in my amp. Fucking little terrors.

In my life, I have lived with (In chronological order):

A chocolate lab named Mandy, died by the time I was like three or four.
A cat named figarro. Ran away around the same time Mandy kicked off.
A golden lab named Brandon. Had him from the age of about four to seventeen. I adored him.
A husky named Sheila. While not as awesome as Brandon, she was gorgeous and a sweeheart. We got her when I was like seven and she died when I was about fifteen or sixteen.
A cat named Harry, who belonged to my sister, we got when I was like eight or nine. He died sometime in my late teens.
A cat named Baghera. She was my cat and I loved her muchly. We got her when I was maybe eleven and she died in the summer of 2006, right after I moved back to my hometown. She stayed with my mom when I moved out and she basically hid in the basement waiting to die and only really moved when I came down.
A cat named Pooh-kei. My brother's cat. We got her like two years after Baghera. She's still doing quite well, though she's practically blind. Despite being blind and declawed, she still catches mice like mad.
A ferret named Leia. She didn't last long, she developed a tumor after like two years.
A cat named Frederick. My mom got him shortly before I moved out back in like 2004, I think. He died just about a year ago, had a blood clot. My mom's still not quite over it.
A pair of ferrets my roommate had.
A pair of cats with FIV or whatever it's called. They had AIDs, one had downs syndrome and used to drool on the couch a lot.
A kitten named Parrot my other roommate got when the first one moved out. He was a brat.
A pitbull/rotty named Butters. My ex and I adopted her together in 2005 when we decided to move in together. We agreed early on that should we break up, she'd keep her, but it hurt like hell. I loved that dog to death.
An italian greyhound named Scooby. My last roommate before moving to Boston had him and I fucking hated it. The dog was a little shit and I cannot fucking stand him.

Unfortunately, pets aren't allowed in my building, so it ends there.

I have had:

Countless fish
Three rabbits
Three dogs
One horse that I actually owned
Four horses I trained/showed that other people owned

One of my rabbits was bottle-fed (I will try to find pictures of him) and he ended up being one of the best pets ever. He slept on my bed, cuddled, was litterbox-trained, knew different tricks, and had the most adorable face. He was a black and white miniature lop-eared, named Wicket (because he was a fuzzy little trouble-maker!).

My first horse, Shannon (registered name "Siridian Star of Shannon"), was a registered Morgan Horse and my favorite pet, ever. I have been riding horses for more than thirteen years, since I was seven, and I finally bought a horse in high school. Her owners sold her to me at a really discounted price because one, they were moving, and two, she was "dangerous." By this, they mean that they never rode her, and even my trainer had trouble with her. But we connected and during one of the last years I owned her we went to a multiple-day show and took home a TON of ribbons, including second place in a championship class. At the moment, she is retired, and she is fat and happy living on a beautiful farm in Virginia.
This is us after our championship class.

My current dog, Bailey, is a ten-year-old Golden Retriever who I love more than most people I know.
She drinks the dregs of my tea when I am done with it in the morning.

I also train horses at my college -- my current "project" is a three-year-old Morgan Horse named UC Celebration ("Ellie" for short), and she is perfect in every single way. Went to our first show this semester and placed first in a class of five (she was the youngest horse by more than two years).

@twistedremedy: horses are a LOT of work, and they cost a LOT of money. I have spent almost every spare hour since the start of high school at my barn, and I have to work my ass off to pay for it all (because I am not one of those lucky kids with rich parents). However, training horses is one of the most rewarding things ever, and I would not trade that for anything.

In my life I have had three dogs.

Freddie the first. I am not entirely sure of his breed, as he was a mutt, but he was little and had black curly hair. I don't actually remember him, as he died when I was two, but he was a good dog.

Then we got Max when he was a few months old. Max was a yellow lab/golden retriever mix. He was the sweetest, most wonderful dog you could ever want. We got him when I was two and he was with us until I turned fourteen, but he had arthritis so bad that he could barely walk so we had to have him put down.

And our current dog is Jinx. She is the most ridiculous dog ever. She's part black lab and part border collie, so she's adorable but quite high strung. We got her a few months after Max was gone, so I guess she has been around for quite a while now.

I have also had more cats than some people had people in their graduating class. I grew up on a dairy farm, so cats just sort of naturally flock to the place. We fed them milk and my dad would always give them old minnows and the bits of fish he caught that we were not going to eat, so they just kinda stuck around. At any given time I would say there were 20-30 roaming the farm, and they would all come to the barn in the morning and at night when we milked the cows. I consider them pets because they all had names and they would cuddle with you and all that jazz. Unfortunately when we sold the cows they all just sort of dispersed. There is one that still hangs around the farm and comes to see us on occasion, but he is getting old for a nearly wild cat and will probably kick the bucket soon.

Currently I have no pets in my apartment, but I do have a plant that I named Augustus. That is good enough for me.

I have not had many pets, but here they are:

A rather large goldfish who lived longer than I expected it would, as I won it at a carnival.
Several other replacement goldfish who all got flushed within the first few days, because they just did not like life.
Waffles, the large yellow tabby I got in 4th grade. He's still alive and fatter than ever, but he is an excellent space heater.
Parker, a stray white and yellow tabby who was abandoned on our street. He has the longest legs I've ever seen and is a goofball.

I forgot to say the pet I didn't like...
The iguana.
It was the scariest damn thing.

And it would lash its tail at you all the time.

Eric, you have thrown my whole life into question.

A more disturbing possibility is that Figarro was the only witness to who really killed Mandy so Figarro had to "run away".

One would think that it is time for me to stop watching crime dramas. The sad thing is that I don't watch any of them.

Also, I have no pets so I have no pictures to share.
Past pets were:
Some small yappy dog called Mitzi when I was a wee child.
A Dachshund imaginatively named Heidi whilst I was in elementary school.
A gerbil whose name escapes me.
A parakeet whose name also escapes me. (Suspected in the death of my brother's parakeet)
And a half-lab half-pointer wholly insane dog named Skipper.
There were also some fish at some point but I've no idea the type or number.

Dogs on bed

I would like it noted that this sort of thing should be avoided. I'm not trying to piss off any animal rights types, but letting your dog sleep in your bed makes them feel a measure of dominance in a pet-provider relationship and can result in obedience problems later on.

Also, they will totally piss on your bed if they start to think they're in charge. Cleaning dog piss off a mattress is a less than ideal way to spend one's weekend.

I think what I'm trying to say is that coming home drunk on a Friday night to find your pitbull has peed in your bed is a terrible experience. I would not recommend it.

My cat is a goddamn genius.  He is the only pet I live with in my apartment, but I have lived with many creatures, because my family keeps adopting anything that needs a home.

Right now we have:
Six cats
Three dogs plus a fourth that we are fostering.
Two rabbits
A turtle
A hedgehog
Two doves
Two goats
Two chickens

In the past we have had Mallard ducks, frogs, and a few fish.  We also took care of an albino hedgehog for a while.  That thing was freaky.

Basically if someone has an animal that they can't keep, they ask my family.  This is the reason I grew up in a petting zoo.

Agreed, although, I must admit I'm pretty lax on this with my own dogs now that they're older. I mean, yeah, sure, I can more or less get away with it (admittedly, my dogs are not the most disciplined; they listen to commands but sometimes push things a bit) because they're pretty submissive now, but it's a really bad precedent to set particularly when they're young, especially with a tough strong breed like pitbulls. This isn't to say I'm one of those people think all pits are agressive killing machines or anything, I just mean that they're not very easily dissuaded. I house sat for my uncle who owns a very gentle and loveable pit mix, but frankly, that dog will walk all over you if you make any concessions and is perfectly comfortable damn near yanking your arm out of its socket on a walk if it doesn't respect you. I can't imagine that dog going so far as to snap at me, but until I put my foot down and was really consistent with it that dog was like "Oh, you silly bastard, it's cute that you think you're in charge. We're going this way now."

I had a mutt named Teddy when I was younger, but she left us for a little old lady up the street. I don't think I'd want to go back to us either if I was her, the lady's husband had passed away, so she'd still make the normal amount of food for two people and give the other portion to the dog. It turned into a very fat dog.

Then there was my wonderful awesome Suzie dog. She was an English Springer Spaniel and ridiculously active. She still wanted to get her run on after we walked her so eventually we just gave up and would drive out to a gravel road and let her out. She'd run on the road and we'd follow behind her. For miles and miles and miles. She loved hunting, so much so that my dad's friends would ask to "borrow" her when they'd go out hunting for birds. She was happy to do that, and they were happy too cuz she had a really soft mouth. And smart too! I taught her to roll over in less than an hour. Eventually she started to lose her hearing and sight, but she loved hunting a little too much? Dad went out with her one night and she jumped out the window to go chase something. She couldn't find her way back to the pickup and went missing for about a week. Mom and my aunt would go out where she jumped out and drive around yelling for her in the afternoon, and dad went in the evening. Turns out she couldn't find us, but did find another hunter from a different town out with his dogs. He picked her up eventually we found each other and got her back. She lived for about a year after that when her arthritis and bowels and vision and hearing got bad enough that we were kind of forced to put her down. She'd run into things all the time and couldn't even lie down by herself.

Several other replacement goldfish who all got flushed within the first few days, because they just did not like life.

They were probably just bloated from overfeeding.

My boyfriend's family (who I consider my family, too) have 8 dogs (4 Australian Shepards, a terrier mix, and 3 Great Pyrenees), two cats, and many, many goats.

Here (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/Dogbert32/P1020646.jpg) is one of our Pyrs, Sarah.  The other two are Elsie and Mama. They're all as tall or taller than me. We didn't name any of them; they're rescue dogs and guard the goats.

Our Aussies are Cipher (http://a53.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/17/l_c37c62e188aa2d950b619ce475131e6c.jpg), Cassandra (http://a676.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/95/l_4479f493515595f7d91f91090e2c88fb.jpg), Mariposa, and Tenley. For some reason there aren't pictures of Mari, Tenley, or Princess the terrier and there are so many of Cipher and Cassie.

Our two cats are Lullaby and Dubya. I wish I could find pictures of them because they are really funny cats.

All our goats kind of look (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y250/Dogbert32/P1020637.jpg) alike. We probably have between 30-40 of them. We also had a horse, but we recently sold him because he was getting lonely without any other horses.

Oh, man. I could talk about my pets way more than anybody want to hear about them.

Here's a video of Hubert (the cockatiel) whistling with me. You'll probably be able to tell which one is which.

He'd only been hearing that song for a coupla weeks at the time that video was made. He's already much better.

Here is Charlie (my parakeet), thinking he is an aquatic bird. Also, my mother talking.

I used to have a gold fish called George. He died after a couple of weeks which was quite depressing, since he was the only pet I'd ever had (and the fish he was sharing with lived for at least two years after that!)

I really want a cat, they're so beautiful. I can't get one right now though because I'm at uni, and my mum won't have one at home because she hates the way you can feel all of their bones. But hopefully in a year I will have my own place and after I've figured out how to take care of myself I might get one!

But I do usually go with my friend when she takes her dog for a walk though and he's beautiful. He's called Tipper and he's half boarder collie and half springer spaniel. Madness.

Anyway, pets. Our family has a dog, Zara, who is a Belgian Sheperd that was the first drug dog in our county. She's old and lazy. We got her for free from a patient of my mom's who thought she had flea bites all over her from the dog. Zara is the best.
We have a cat, Sparkle, who is absolutely batshit crazy. She sleeps most of the day but every now and then she'll just be walking along and start tearing through the house. Because we have fake hardwood floors, her feet skid and she can't get a grip. It's funny.
We have pigs. About 25 of them. One whoreboar named Jim who is the breeder.
We also have about 200 chickens. They aren't all locked up in a building and they can go wherever.

Can we see more pictures of this guy? He looks like he might be fat, and fat dogs are the best dogs.

Oh yeah, Stoney's pretty fat; but that's because she's pretty old and doesn't do much any more. It's also not uncommon for lady dogs to gain weight once they've been desexed, so that coupled with a working dog moving to a place with basically no back yard means that she's pretty overweight. We have had a long-standing joke in our family that when she dies we're going to have her stuffed (with a barrel of port inside) and make her into a coffee table.

She always looks so sad (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v663/Lapuz/animals/stoner3.jpg) these days, though; and she's so deaf you have to actually touch her to get her attention. Poor old fat dog.

A shitload of fish, one of them is notorious for eating the other poor fish
A cat named Bartimaeus who actively hates me
A 2nd adorable kitten name Elphaba, though she should be renamed speed racer.
And an old Lab-Mutt named Layla

Also, a while before we got layla we watched a neighbor's old dog(neighbor moved, dog died)
He was HUGE. He was a wolfhound-lab mix I think.

Have you bathed her in anti-flea stuff? As in, got her completely soaked? There are some pretty cool anti-flea shampoos but I can't remember which one we use for our dog and it's probably different for cats too. Our kittens have fleas :s We're getting them flea collars, I hope it works because I cannot stand the idea of insects on my pets. UGH.

I have two kittens, identical except that one is fatter, and an older cat who is black and white and very gorgeous. Then we have a dog, a little terrier cross, and at my dad's there's another big fat black and white cat and a Labradoodle. Also lots of expensive goldfish in the pond, which I just can't get enthusiastic about, and dozens of chickens and two ducks. That's a lot of feeding.

Also, making her stay outside (where she got the fleas in the first place and where they like to hang out) probably isn't helping the situation. Maybe really clean her and fleabomb the lounge room to see if that does anything to help.

Snot (the chihuahua; he's Snot a real dog) has fleas and Dad can't work out how to get rid of them, so he keeps scratching incessantly. Fleas really are annoying little buggers!

I've had 4 cats: Sabrina, Samantha, Tac and Rudy. Bri and Sam died when I was young, and Tac had to be put down a few years ago...but Rudy is still around, though I hardly see him because he is always hiding. He is afraid of his own shadow (and the doorbell, and footsteps, and sudden movements - I think you get the picture).

When my stepdad moved in with us he brought a dog and I have never been a dog person...but Casey was a good first dog. He was astonishingly well-trained and obedient. He was affectionate to those he was familiar with, but when he was a puppy he lost one of his eyes and that made him sort of anti-social. He lived to be 18 and passed away in my stepdad's arms.

After that...we adopted this monster:

Bayley! When he was a puppy he was abused, and a rescue service took him in. He then bounced around from foster home to foster home, but always ended up back with the service because he was so badly behaved. We took him in when he was a little over a year old, and he was a terror. He had a radar for the most important thing in the room, and would choose to destroy that thing. It was hard, but we forgave him and kept him. Couldn't imagine my life without him. And gosh, if he isn't the cutest thing.

Tiger is allergic to the pyrethrins in most flea treatments! She cannot breathe when I wash her in them!
The vet says that this is pretty common and all we can do is treat it with expensive treatments that I have bought and they're not working, so she's staying outside. She doesn't seem to mind it at all actually.

Cockatiels are great low maintenance birds (even better, I'd say than parakeets) as long as you have the time for them. You should have at least an hour's time (not necessarily all at once, scattered throughout the day is fine, but at least an hour) to spend handling them/talking to them and such.

They are not even remotely aggressive and unlike most parrots, they do like being scratched and petted sometimes. Not very good talkers in my experience, but very talented whistlers. They pick songs up very quickly if you whistle on a regular basis to them.

They are much, much more low-maintenance than big parrots (that tend to turn self-destructive and mutilate themselves if they don't get enough attention), but friendlier than smaller ones like canaries and finches and such.

Be sure to get a male if it's your first bird, though. They tend to be a little friendlier and more musical.

@Trollstormur: Holy crap, that is the prettiest kitten ever! What big, curious eyes it has. ACK! The adorable.

This is a friend's parrot (same friends as got married - see my previous photo).  His wings are clipped, and he has a disorder that makes him pull his feathers out, so he wears a high collar to prevent him pecking his chest.  In this photo he is not wearing the collar as he is in a good state; but I find him very unappealling, even before he shits down my back and on the furniture.

Tigerlily is beautiful!!

Have you tried using Advantage (imidicloprid) or Promeris (metaflumizone)? I would recommend Advantage...it kills fleas without them having to bite. Promeris is a newer drug and so I would try it if Advantage doesn't seem to be working. In addition to the monthly spot-on flea treatments, you should be vacuuming your house at least every other week and washing clothes/sheets/bedding regularly. Flea eggs, larvae, and pupa are found in the environment. After you vacuum, throw the bag away because if fleas hatch in the bag they can and will crawl out of the vacuum. If Tigerlily is outside, it's harder to control the fleas  unless you're also spraying your yard.

This picture really isn't catching her in her natural state at all though. Normally, she's murdering things. She is an 11 pound rat terrier mix and nothing on earth under 10 pounds has a chance in hell of escaping her. If rat baiting were legal, she would excel. She is very, very fast, and doesn't care for much that isn't people. I can't really let her outside even into a fenced yard unattended anymore because something will die.

I have had 3 dogs. My family had a greyhound, but that wasn't really mine.

My stepdad had two "sons" when we met him, Saturn and Jughead.

Saturn was a German Shepherd who was a badass. This dog could do geometry and shit. You would throw a ball on the roof at an angle and BEFORE IT CAME DOWN, he would be at where it would fall. He would get between myself and my friend when we would be doing the joke wrestling and start barking at us until we stopped.

And Jughead was sorta dumb but absolutely lovable. He was Siberian Husky, and we said he was part wolf to scare away solicitors. People would see him at the door even though it was Saturn barking from behind him. We had to have Jughead put down because he couldn't walk from one side of the house to the other.

After Saturn died we got Sadie, an aussie shepherd. She was 10 weeks old when we got her and so very cute. Now she is turning into an old fat dog since the kids (my sister and I) moved out. She is so adorable.
I have always been a dog person and I consider dogs to be part of the family. If you get a dog, you don't ignore it. You spend time with it and you love it.
one of my favorite things is to just catch my dog walking by and hug em. Since sadie is small enough, I pick her up and spin her around. Dizzy dogs are funny guys.

So far, my family has had three different cats and a dog. One cat was hit by a car and the other two disappeared, but the dog's still alive and well.

This is Juno. (http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j185/junodog/P1030426copy.jpg)

She's kind of a moron at times; she's tried to get into our car before the door was entirely opened, and the one time she actually caught an animal, she killed it and got really confused as to why it wasn't moving around anymore. That was kind of depressing to watch, but also hilarious in a sick, sick way.

I also have a fish tank with one cichlid. He killed off the last of my old bunch of cichlids. I hate him but I don't have the heart to get revenge.

Okay, so this is kinda sick and demented but me and my friends were drunk and the one who owned the fish was moving and couldn't take it, and his roomate didn't want it. It had also eaten its tankmate so we felt justified. We cooked a Jack Dempsey Cichlid(is it jack dempsey? I forget but its blue and green). In beer. and then fried it in hot sauce, and then we all tried some of it (4 of us, all very drunk). I figure its death was quick (if not entirely painless) and far more interesting than being flushed down a toilet to die slowly or just thrown in the trash or outside or something, so therefore it will always be that story of that fish we cooked one time. My only regret is that we were in no shape to take pictures.

I would like it noted that this sort of thing should be avoided. I'm not trying to piss off any animal rights types, but letting your dog sleep in your bed makes them feel a measure of dominance in a pet-provider relationship and can result in obedience problems later on.

Paul, I don't know how I missed your dogs earlier in the thread, but they are adorable. They are scruffy in the best sense of the word. Despite my ownership of a chihuahua, I prefer my dogs to be wash and wear, so to speak, and your dogs definitely look like they're too busy tearing around the yard and being awesome to have much time for being groomed all day.

Sorry, but my grandfather had a dog that could have passed for Lucy's big brother back when I was just a li'l kid. Beau was awesome. He was very smart and easy to train, but he put all of his excess energy into doing Disgusting Dog Things. He was the kind of dog that could locate roadkill and bring it back home in under 20 seconds, but he did it with such gusto you couldn't really get mad.

Oo! Oo! Get a giant bunny! In all seriousness, the rabbits that convinced me some of them were actually cool were Flemish Giants. Like 8kg (16lbs), and will rule your household.

These are ze rats, meeting the tiny googly-eyed one in the middle (their cage is a lot bigger than that spare one):

Siberian Huskies are pretty good dogs. As with practically every other dog breed, if you take care of and train it right, you should have no problems. They do, however, need a lot of exercise, so make sure you can provide that. If you don't they will either get bored and destructive or just plain old fat. Neither of these things are good.

Thanks. I'm looking into getting one down the road sometime. I've heard they're really affectionate and nice but required a lot of work. Reading around a little bit, though, they seem like they're much easier to care for than labs or retrievers, both of which I've handled before.

my housemate's monk parakeet, tycho -

i am taking care of him for the weekend and also while she is in panama. sometimes he is cute but mostly he is an asshole and the noisiest fucker ever. he throws a massive fit every time you don't pay attention to him or let him chew on everything you own. apparently these birds are as smart as a 4-year-old child and since he's learned that his fits nearly always result in people coming over to yell at him or take him out of his cage he now does it more than ever. he's also learned to bite me in the head whenever he's on my shoulder because my housemates laugh at him when he does it. having a really intelligent pet is as cool as it is frustrating.

Post by: redglasscurls on 14 Jan 2009, 12:01
Huskies are not at all easier than retrievers/labs- my grandfather used to board/breed dogs and he absolutely hated having huskies to deal with. Huskies can be really high strung and a lot of them have the brains inbred out of them in irreputable breeding places. If you leave them at home alone, they are pretty likely to eat your entire living room and probably crap in it since they're a pain in the ass to housetrain.
You need to be serious about training and asserting dominance, or your husky will make your life suck. If you have it from a puppy and really put in the time, they can be great dogs, but I wouldn't recommend it to most people.

Yeah, huskies aren't really easier to deal with than labs or goldens at all, honestly. Retrievers can be a pain sometimes because they need a fair chunk of exercise plus when they do get into mischief, they're pretty likely to bring back souvenirs. My grandfather used to live out in the country, and his lab Beau absolutely adored finding a nice chunk of roadkill to bring home. Due to the location, this often meant Beau would come home with something like an entire deer haunch. But other than that, they're bred to work extremely well in a one-on-one situation with their handler. A retriever, after all, must sit around calmly until ordered to disembark and return with prey, and as such they're not particularly domineering dogs.

Huskies, on the other hand, are bred for endurance and the ability to work with other dogs and show some initiative; admirable stuff, but often not a good thing by house pet standards. They're not dog aggressive like a pit breed or anything, but dogs keep eachother in line through dominant behavior and a husky with "lead dog" traits isn't likely to take crap from anyone without a fair bit of training. Plus, huskies have a really strong prey drive, a trait that can be a really big pain in the ass when combined with the whole domineering thing and the stupid amounts of energy they have.

Wow... a thread I can really get involved in...  You may think, after reading this, that we own a shelter... We don't... My girlfriend just loves animals so we have a lot... They are as spoiled as any kids and have their own room and closets...

Dogs:
Cats:
Turtles:
Ferrets:
Ball Python:
CURRENT RESIDENTS
Hedgehog: Sonic
Sugar Gliders: Bob, Lola, 2 babies
Chinchilla: Li'l Vickie
Pot-belly Pigs: Leo, Shipley
Hermit Crabs: 8 or so...

FAVORITES:
I'd have to say that Hugo is my favorite of the current batch... Megan was prior to that, but she died of a breed-specific(pug) form of encephalitis.  Hugo is the father of Tatum, Piper, Paige, and Connor.  He is the greatest pug that has ever lived...

NEW PETS:
I personally have no desire to get more... but I'm sure I'll be overridden on that one as well...  I wouldn't have this many now if it was up to me...  Phoebe, Leia, Daisy, and Hugo would be plenty... And I'd probably keep Paige and Connor because they're are Hugo and Leia's best looking puppies.

It's a big place... and we've got a big fenced-in yard...  But only the bigger dogs ever get a lot of use out of the yard... The pugs are mostly content to stay in the house...  They're all potty-trained and are mostly well mannered.

I had an Alaskan Malamute, which is a more stubborn, larger version of a husky and my experience wasn't like this at all. He was incredibly sweet, loved attention, only once became destructive when left too long. He was retarded stubborn, but with enough patience he was a great dog. We raised him around other dogs, so he never once tried to assert his dominance (he was actually so friendly that when other dogs didn't like him he didn't care and would STILL try to play with them). The prey instinct is a problem...We had two cats as well, and he liked to hunt them down if they were running around the living room.

His name was Atticus, I just had to give him away 3 weeks ago because when I moved out of the apartment I shared with my ex I couldn't find any apartments that I could afford that would allow a 95lb dog, and she could not spend enough time with him on her own, so it would have been really unfair to him. The sad thing, was that it was harder than her dumping me.

Edit: Sorry....didn't mean to turn this into the blog thread

I've had 4 dogs, 3 cats, 12 fish.

My first dog, Keesha, was a Keeshond, wonderful dog, but was too friendly with the neighbors. he chewed through the fence and would jump up on people trying to play games with them. (This was before shock-colliers were popular).

Two dogs, Penny and Foxy, were enemys from Day one. Defiantly not a match made in heaven.

Cody was my latest, he was a wonderful dog, but too expensive to feed, we had to give him to friends of ours.

-------------------
Felines:

Stupid Cat, (Yes, that was his real name). {An american shorthair} Did the damnedest stuff, attacking roosting hens, getting himself pecked almost to death, licking electrical sockets, jumping into a deep fat fryer. Accidentialy sleeping in the washing machine. (Didn't find out until we heard his very upsetting and scary screaming. Oy, poor cat. Anyway, he died after going into the garage and knocking over antifreeze.... the sight of a twitching cat to my (then) 12 year old eyes) was horrible. We loved him the most though of all our pets.

Annie and Cathy were both Calico, we had them for their full lives, they made wonderful companions. (My aunt claimed annie was trying to kill her by rubbing her legs as the walked (tripping her three times.) this lead my sister and I to call her, The Auntinator.

All my fish... Oh Goldie, I know thee well... Goldie 2, Ben Gurion... Schwarzenegger, Amanda, Gypsy, Miri, Ehud... well, i can't remember all their names!

I am looking to getting a bird someday, though one that doesn't chirp too much.

Oh, whoops, this thread. Thanks, I think they're cute! It is inordinately expensive, even when everyone's healthy, not to mention time-consuming. But animals are better than people.  :-D

Others have answered the Husky thing but to reiterate I think they really are not a breed for many people. Incredibly high energy - ideally need a walk and a run a day, but not early or late so they don't overheat, fairly high upkeep coat (not like a woolly dog but still), often prey driven, super good at escaping, quite vocal (which is fine with the right owner), very independent and quite domineering. On the plus side not as big as Malamutes.

They are awesome dogs but they are a high maintenance breed and usually woefully mismanaged. With a dedicated and confident owner they're fantastic pets and apparently it's really fascinating living with such a "wolf like" breed. ie: A woman off the pit bull forum had a pit bull mongrel and a Husky and where pit bulls are very human-esque, snuggly and in your face, Huskies definitely watch your body language and respond to it, and are more aloof. Interesting contrasts.

It's just sad for Huskies that they're so beautiful as they just need so much time and work (really, they are a working breed) and most pet owners don't really fulfil the needs of their small breed lap dogs or low-drive show bred Labradors (let alone when they get a real, drivey lab).
Title: Re: Pets.
Post by: Golani on 27 Jan 2009, 08:05

 very independent and quite domineering.

Not necessarily true, my brother has a Siberian Husky (Gypsy), who rolls over on her belly whenever a human comes along, and follows orders perfectly. (For a dog not previously at a training school).  She is very submissive and dependent on her owners. However as with any dog breed, there is always an exception. I'm just speaking from experiance here.

Huskies are good dogs, great family pets if you get the right one. Just don't leave food on your floor.
Title: Re: Pets.
Post by: Fenriswolf on 27 Jan 2009, 14:45
Yes but with the right owner even quite a dominant breed/dog won't show those characteristics - while they might with a less experienced owner. Example: my little red mongrel had potential to be very domineering and resource guard if she'd continued to be owned by someone who babied her. She stood over food and toys and growled if you touched her vulva (she had sores from demodex) or looked in her mouth. You'd never think that now seeing how tolerant she is of anything we do to her.

Also, dogs are individuals, saying "it might be OK!" because of one particular dog is not really the way to go. As I've said before I belong to a pit bull forum. Many people on there have pictures of multiple dogs lounging on couches, refusing to get up to go to the toilet because it's cold, stuff like that. That doesn't change the fact that American Pit Bull Terriers are a high energy breed who are prone to dog aggression. The same lazy couch-snugglers may turn into destructive brats without a run, a walk, and a play on the springpole a day, and the dogs lying together may only get on with each other and require lots of time and work to focus on their owner out on walks so they don't scream and throw themselves around when they see other dogs.

Besides, yes, Huskies are very intelligent but assuming that that means easy to train would be a big mistake. If you're buying a purebred dog you want to get a dog that fits your personality and lifestyle, and from a breeder who produces true to standard dogs. There is a red Doberman at my vet clinic who is the most laid back dog you'll ever meet. Assuming Dobermans are not therefore likely to be incredibly hyperactive would be a big mistake!

I've only ever had one pet. When I was 6, my family got a Black Labrador puppy that we named Samantha.

She was a pretty awesome dog. There are still memories that I can laugh myself to tears about.

But, alas...as you can tell by the past tense, she passed away. She's been gone about 2 years now, which makes a total of 8 dog-less years in my 24 year existence.

I can honestly say that it's actually been kind of hard, especially since no one in my family is in a position to own pets right now. I really miss having one and I'm looking forward to the day when I can get another dog.

Until then, I live vicariously through my other friends who are pet owners. So, counting the pets that I steal for a time to make myself better...I have a Portuguese Podengo puppy (yes, that's a real breed), and two cats, Samhain--pronounced SUH-vain--and Yule (named by a girl who loves Wicca, as you can guess)

Oscars are so ugly though.. I want some fish like a northern pike or muskee.. but I know that's illegal and tanks would need to be huge... I was thinking maybe a pirana(SP?).. but i'm not sure how to get a hold of one.

its illegal to keep a pike? I would just think that it would be relatively hard to obtain one and keep it in a tank... but not illegal.

Pirhanas you can buy at any good fishstore.

The murkyness of the water doesnt matter much. The main bad part about them critters is:

- They are interesting 15 minutes out of a entire week. As in, interesting at feeding time...

The rest of the time, you have a boring tank (cause well, if you put in other fish, theyll get eaten, they just dont eat eachother to much) with some fish lurking somewhere under a rock. No good

Pikewise, we had one at school once. Getting him was just a matter of having classmates who enjoy fishing. The keeping him was more problematic though.

A). Live food, either feederfish, or catching little fish every week
B). Pike hunt out of the shadows, keeping waterlillies (or something like that) in an aquarium = various shades of hells of tricky
C). You need an aquarium that isnt a rectangle. They dart forward to grab their prey, but also kinda need to have space to turn around (very rigid bodies)

For fish that each eachother, chiclids work rather lovely

Depends on your state laws.. It's considered a game fish here in South Dakota so.

Thanks for the Info.  is it harder to keep Salt Water fishies?

As long as you have a big aquarium (500l+), access to fresh, filtered salt water (we got it via the local sea aquarium), and a well designed (and overdimensionated) filtration system, its not really that much harder.

Also, you must a). not mind cleaning up algea on a weekly basis b). have a significant other who doesnt mind saltstains everywhere in the vicinity of the thing

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: Don't do it unless you have a LOT of time to spend on maintenance.

Alright, I'm bumping this because my cat has just broken the boundaries of stupidity.  I mean, I knew he was dumb, but dang, then he has to go and chase his own damn tail. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfjqJcYUqTc)

He did this for several minutes before I finally got the camera on him.  My favorite part is where he checks behind the bed, in case it escaped.

I love how Diesel is all 'Yeah, I have a bow, and we all know it makes me look AWESOME.'

and, regarding the cat chasing it's own tail, my dog once got his leash caught around a chair as a pup and followed it for about five minutes. My dad was in the other room and ultimately missed it, so when he came in I put the lease back the way it was [kind of hard to explain without  a picture, but, it involved my dog running around all four legs of the chair in an attempt to reach it], and he followed it for another five minutes.

I have one, and let me say, they don't require a a lot of upkeep, but they can be incredibly boring animals most of the time. I mean, I still like to get him out and wrap him around my shoulders/arms once in a while and he's a great conversation starter, but yeah. You have to make sure you have the money to be able to set that sucker up in a 40 gallon aquarium before you buy it though, and probably a couple smaller tanks before that, since it can stress them out to be in a too large environment. That said there are a ton of really cool color morphs out there.

I'm not crazy about reptiles as pets. They're pretty and they're definitely a conversation starter, but they don't do much and they don't actually like you. I had an iguana for a while and that was easily the least sad pet death I've experienced. I felt bad because it was my responsibility to keep him healthy and I failed at that, but I didn't actually miss his presence very much.

I imagine reptiles are kind of like fish. Sure they look pretty and they are kind of interesting but you can't really cuddle them.

I'm thinking of getting a rat. I'm a little worried about what I'll do if it doesn't like me, but I am also pretty intrigued about what I can try to teach it to do. When I worked at a petshop I taught a cageful of rats to climb to the top of their cage and hang from the ceiling if anyone was eating a sandwich near them. It was pretty cool.

Ive had lots and lots of pets. I used to live on a farm, and if there was ever a lost animal, it would be ours within 5 minutes.
I have had:
14/15 Cats
1 Dog
20 + Chickens
10 + Ducks
ALOT of Sheep - I lived in Wales...
5 Horses
1 Rabbit
15/16 Hamsters
Lots of fish
And many other things that my little brain can't remember right now ...
Now naming them all would be a much harder task :P

I like rats, but I cannot have them as they creep Jon out. He's been very understanding of birds, so I hate to press my luck.

I am teaching Hubert how to whistle the Imperial March from Star Wars now. I can't wait until he gets that down pat. There will be videos. And they will be cute.

I think has been my favorite thread in the forum.  I love the fuzzy animals!

Currently we have 6 cats and one bird (she's a bad-ass bird).  We just moved from a big house to a small townhome and of course, we ended up adopting a local stray kitten who is currently terrorizing the older cats, so the house is REALLY crowded.  But, like a lot of folks, we will not have children, so we do pets.  Makes my mother-in-law crazy.

We did have dogs, but the last one died about a year before we moved (and we knew we were moving, so...).  The younger cats miss her.  She was not so sure about them.  It was fairly funny watching a 50+ lb dog be terrified of an 8 pound cat.

I've had several birds, but Sweetie is the most unusual. She's a ring necked parakeet, one of the meanest of the parrotlets, and not usually kept as a pet.  She belonged to my dad, part of his personal bird sanctuary, but she was so mean that when he died I knew I couldn't place her with a new home.  As it happened, she completely loved ME -- me, and nobody else but me.  I'm her 3rd owner, so it's just weird that she waited that long to bond to anyone.  We think she's around 15 years old now.  She goes completely cluckipated when I talk to her, and I'm the only one who can really handle her.  She bites hunks out of everyone else, including the cats.  And she's TINY.  Just tiny and fierce.  Also, VERY LOUD.  She has to live on the enclosed front porch because she starts squawking and you cannot hear anything in the house.

So, grand total of pets

6 dogs
7 birds
assorted fish (we are thinking about a new aquarium, for Kitty TV, but haven't done it yet).
12 cats

We have a history of adopting sick, unwanted animals and caring for them through their last days, too -- four of those so far.  Not a duty I want, really, but I cannot easily turn my back on an animal in need.

I hope we can move back to a regular house in a few years, so I can get another dog.  I love Goldens, but I'm thinking about a Corgi next time.

Atticus was a really goodlooking dog.

I miss every animal I ever had that has passed away.  The worst have been a kitten I adopted years ago -- Othello -- who caught Feline Aids in the animal shelter and god very sick.  Just recently we took care of a local stray we called CowKitty for his big cow spots.  He was such a sweetie, so soft, not really smart, and we were trying to find a home for him, but he had Feline Aids too, and we had to put him down.  I cried for a good two days.  I know he would have gotten terribly sick, and he would have given the disease to other cats, but I still feel a little like I betrayed him when I took him to the vet and found out, and then didn't come get him afterwards.

It does no good to try not to fall in love with an animal.  It happens despite my best efforts.

Yeah, he was also one of the friendliest dogs I've ever known. He was about 100 pounds (you can't really see how big he is in the picture), and I always thought it was funny when people would be scared of him, because not only was he friendly, but he was scared of any dark colored inanimate objects that moved.

The Golden Retriever I had as a teen was about that large -- he was goofy and too smart, and he loved everyone.  When I got a kitten, he adopted it.  She refused to live in the house at one point (We lived in a semi-rural area) and she moved into his dog house.  She would go into his house, climb over him, lay down, and PUSH HIM OVER with her paws so she could have the warm spot.  And he'd MOVE.  When he got sick, she followed him everywhere, keeping an eye on him.

Eek.  It's turning into the Pets Who Died Thread.  Nooooo!  I'll start crying all over again.  My pets are my vulnerable spot.  Few people mean as much to me as my critters do.

Atticus is so handsome!

My family dog Sunny is the exact opposite, small, but very brave (though slightly less motivated to be brave in her old age). She isn't aggressive, but she places herself firmly between family members and new people and sounds like a much larger dog when she barks.

Every time I see a poster of some kind that states that there's a kitten up for adoption somewhere I have to restrain myself. We're pretty full as it is, but it's hard to resist the draw of an animal that might need help. My wife is more emotional when it comes to the pets, but she's the more practical of the two of us, so we seem to have reached a good equilibrium.

I still want to help her save stray kitties, though.

My local vet has large cages in the front area with kittens up for adoption.  Every time I go to the vet I have to see all the cats, and it is so hard not to scoop all of them up and take them home.  But I know I can't, so I just pet them a little and try not to think about it -- and all my animals are spayed/neutered.
