Title: What's a good PS2 game for a 9 year old boy?
Post by: Emaline on 23 Nov 2008, 18:54
So, I am buying gifts for a family that I have never met before. They son asked for used PS2 games. I bought him Lego Star Wars, and my friend is reccommending Ikaruga, which I have never played.

Like I said, I have never met the family, so I kinda want to get something pretty neutral. Lego Star Wars is rated E 10+, and I am kind of worried about how they will feel about that.

...

No one should object to Lego Star Wars. It's Lego. It's Star Wars. It's perfect.

Yeah, I don't think lego star wars would be a problem. The first one was rated E, and I know that was after the E10+ rating came out. You could ask the mother if she would have an objection. You should probably check before buying the games anyway, since you don't know what the boy has.

One of the ratchet and clank games? Or need for speed, racing games are always good.

I see nothing wrong with Lego Star Wars.  Unless the kid was horribly scarred by a terrible Legos accident or something.  Or maybe a Star Wars cosplayer raped his mother.  Ratchet & Clank would be a good one, too.  Those are insanely fun games.

Jak and Daxter is rated, E, and is pretty good.

I love Ikaruga, but I wouldn't recommend it for a 9 year old unless the kid is unusually patient. It's not offensive or anything, but it is a classic space shoot 'em up that demands roughly as much memorization as it does skill to master. It's actually pretty relatively well-known thanks to youtube (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bx0yVFfDOz4&feature=related), since it's one of the few modern games of its type to be brought to the US.

The first Jak and Daxter game is definitely a good choice if the kid doesn't already have it. Crash Bandicoot: the Wrath of Vortex isn't a bad game either, particularly if you're not old enough to have played the previous ones to death, something which likely isn't an issue with a 9 year old.

Ikaruga isn't even on the PS2. It was a Dreamcast game that got a Gamecube port.

It'd be a terrible game for a kid anyway, he'd just get frustrated with it after 10 minutes and give up.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. I have it on gamecube.

Guitaroo man ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gitaroo_Man ) is a pretty harmless game. It's like rockband but with J-music, and instead of instruments is the same controller. It sounds really lame, but it is entertaining. Besides its for everyone (y). Just hope you can still find it.

Ico ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ico ) is pretty similar to the adventures of Link in Zelda, rated teen and very likely you find it in the used bin.

Finally Kingdom Hearts 2 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_hearts_2 ) is rated 10+ , and is an R.P.G. that includes some disney characters.

All 3 are pretty safe for a 9 year old (Ico is rated teen, but its really light as a feather).
Hope any of this suggestions work.

Cheers.

I suggest the original Kingdom Hearts as well as the sequel (sniped), particularly if he likes/is familiar with Disney characters (and who isn't?). Both are rated E and are designed at a kid level of difficulty.

Considering you don't know these parents, given the parents of 9yo boys I know, they're probably completely ignorant of computer game ratings and already bought their pride and joy whatever games he wants, including Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt and Bully.

Regardless of my cynicism, I commend your responsible game buying.

The reason I am so weary about whether or not they will appreciate Lego Star Wars is because these are people I have never met, and will have no contact with, besides the gifts(and maybe a thank you note). It's a family from a parenting board that my mother posts on that was part of this "Adopt A Family For Christmas" type thing. People on this board have refused to let their kids read Harry Potter books because it has witchcraft and sorcery, and that's all the work of the devil and whatnot. So, hopefully they won't be all crazy that "Oh my god! My kid just chopped off that Lego guys head!" or think that it is too violent. I don't want them to be dissappointed with the gifts.

I have no idea about Ikaruga. Like I said, I've never played it. A friend recommended it, and he probably didn't realize that I need it on PS2. And by what everyone has told me, I really doubt most 9 year old boys would be all that interested in it.

But oh my gosh, Crash Bandicoot, Kingdom Hearts, Jak and Daxter, are all great ideas! I didn't even think of those! Thanks so much! I will probably be picking one of these up from work when I go in.

Spyro, Buzz, Monopoly, Lego Indiana Jones, Wall-E, Sonic Mega Collection, Spongebob, Chronicles of Narnia, Hasbro Family Game Night, Shreck the Third...

Bonus being they are all pretty new too so he probs won't have many if my upbringing is anything to go by. (When I was a kid I would not get any new games between christmas and because my birthday is at christmas and I never had money any other time of year.)

If the kid has the feet or the fingers, a music game (eg. GH series) or a dance game (eg. jeez anything that majorly uses dance mat lol).

Apart from that the Lego games are a good choice.

Racing games are also a good choice. I loved the Crash Bandicoot racing series, and I still think CTR is better than Mario Kart =P

Yes, but it is not often that I have to shop for 9 year old kids. It's a video game/music/dvd/comic/action figure store.

It's not often I shop for nine year olds either, but when I worked electronics retail, I used to be able to list off dozens of recommendations for any given system. Has nobody at work ever asked you "what would you recommend for such and such who's interested in such and such" before? It's honestly probably one of the most important tools of a retail job.

But "what would you recommend for such and such who likes such and such" is a lot more information than : "9 year old son: used ps2 game, size 12 pants, size 12-14 shirts."

And obviously, if I came here seeking you help, I am at the end of my rope looking for something for this kid. We have at least a hundred ps2 video games. I was never very into the ps2, and do not know a whole lot about the video games. I was never a 9 year old boy and do no know a whole lot about what they might be into. I don't know this kid, so I really don't know what he'd be into.

It might also be fun looking for one of those fun kiddy arcade light-gun shooters. When I mean that I mean games like Point Blank, except for PS2.

Man, I loved Point Blank. It was awesome in its own right.

This reminded me of the customer rant in Clerks:

"What would you get for a six-year-old who chronically wets the bed?"

I'd just put the pillow OVER the kid's head while screaming "I'm sick of washing your sheets you little piss factory!"

I'd be the BEST DAD EVAR!

On to the serious. I'd have to agree that Lego Star Wars would be a good game for a 9 year old.

Anything in the Katamari series is good for anyone, regardless of age. And I always liked the Crash Bandicoot series of platformers. The Ratchet and Clank series could be a good idea... Those were cool.

Anyway, I've never played Lego Star Wars, but I'd have to say that I can think of no possible way anyone could object to it... I can only imagine the 10+ thing is based on either difficulty or "cartoon violence."

Yeah, i pretty much despised Kingdom Hearts. Boring as hell gameplay with a very uninteresting story and way too goddamn long for what it offers.

It's a love it or hate it game really.

One would think this thread would die eventually. Since it hasn't I will update you all:

The family got all the stuff I sent them yesterday. Everything was wrapped and labeled(with post it notes. So the parents could tell what was for who[if the indivisual wrapping paper for each person didn't clue them in], and what things were before giving them to their kids). I bought a few things off the list for the family to share(poetry books for kids!). The kids haven't gotten the stuff yet(obviously), but the mom loves it! She posted this big long post on the board that I got them from saying how thankful she was for everything, and I seriously teared up a little. My favorite part of Christmas is giving stuff to people because it is awesome to see people so happy. I'm really glad she liked all the stuff.
