Title: Christmas! Gifts! Parties! Etc!
Post by: J-cob9000 on 26 Nov 2008, 14:03
Even though it's almost Thanksgiving, I thought I'd start this wonderfully awesome thread about Christmas (or Hanukkah or whatever else you celebrate). What do you want for Christmas? Are you having any parties?
Discuss.

Also: How do you people feel about stores not just decorating and selling Christmas things in October but playing carols in early November? It's annoys the crap out of me personally.

Haha. Oh, the irony.
"but playing carols"
It's just the songs that get old really fast.

Canadian Thanksgiving was in October...and I work in retail so I'm right into the full swing of things, Christmas-wise. I'm already planning my Christmas dinner for my closest friends. We get dressed up, have an amazing dinner, exchange presents, and catch up because we all live worlds away from each other (for school).

Last year's was amazing.

So does anyone have a little-known favourite Christmas book/movie? Mine is the Polar Express. The book, I mean. The movie, though it shares the same name has (in my opinion) absolutely nothing to do with the book.

The Muppets Christmas Carol at our House every year, as well as The Muppets Family Christmas. All of my siblings know the words and we sing along. Nostalgia is a powerful way of getting people to get along for a little while. I wish I was going to Boston in January now, because apparently through Gabbly Jon fully plans on having some Marley and Marley heavy metal renditions with Jimmy. Fucking Jealous as hell.

I'll be going to my Aunty's place next weekend because while we usually celebrate Christmas on the 24th, like all good Europeans, my folks are going to England for Christmas this year so that my step-mum can see her mother over the holidays as her mum is pretty old and has lupus and shit. So we're moving Christmas forward a bit so we can all see each other. For actual Christmas I guess I'll be going to my mums place? I'm not particularly happy about this as I don't like seeing her but still, I suppose I should go anyway. I'm going to have to work Christmas Day but hopefully I can wrangle a 6am - 11am shift so it won't be too bad.

Also even though I am an atheist I still celebrate Christmas, but really only because my family do. Even so there is very little overt religious imagery in my family's celebrations, we get together and eat lots of food and give each other presents? The ornaments are all reindeers and Santa Claus, we sing two Christmas Carols, both in Hungarian and I don't understand the words (though one of them has "Bethlehem" in it so I assume that is religious). Anyway my point is that Christmas is completely separated from religion in my mind to the point where I always get confused by all the religious stuff on tv (cartoons of the birth of Jesus etc...) on Christmas before I remember.
I assume that if I ever stop seeing my family on Christmas (probably after my grandma dies) I will probably stop really celebrating Christmas.

My family is almost entirely atheist (I say almost because I think my grandfather may have some vague belief in a god but I don't know), and Christmas is huge for us. We have foods that we only make at christmas, and its pretty much the only time of year we all get to see each other. Its just a way for us to express love for family and friends. Christmas trees and blown glass ornaments are fun. There doesn't need to be a religious element at all. And lets be serious here, Christmas is a pagan holiday Christianity hijacked. Christmas trees are pretty obviously a form of nature worship. It just makes people feel good to see green, a sign of life, in the middle of winter (for those of us who live where there is snow and ice and all that), and to be near the people they love. As Christianity spread and various pagan religions faded the winter soltice celebration got a new face painted on it.

My immediate family is entirely non-religious, but we've always celebrated Christmas. I see it as a cultural celebration: regardless of whether or not I believe in god, I come from a Christian culture. I enjoy listening to Bach's B-minor Mass; I take pleasure from reading Gerard Manley-Hopkins' poetry; I celebrate Christmas.

I think of it more as a consumer holiday, now.

Also it reminds me that my dad moved out right after christmas, pretty much therefore DESTROYING THE WHOLE CHRISTMAS-NEW YEAR'S THING FOR ME. *sigh*

I usually have problems around Christmas time. I haven't enjoyed it when my mom and I visit other family members for Christmas since I was a kid for various reasons. (I think if I had a larger immediate family I wouldn't feel this way, but that's just houw it is.) I don't even really care about getting gifts anymore, because no one seems to get me things I like unless I give them specifics, which is no fun. The only parts I like about Christmas are making decorations and shopping for other people. I enjoy going around hunting for things people would like, but I don't really think I'll be doing that this year, which is kind of sad.

Also, I hate seeing anything Christmas related until December and I don't like hearing carols every freaking day until Christmas either. I hate it when people decorate for Christmas before Halloween even happens (there are people down the street that do this).

Well, to make this post less depressing, I will be going to a Christmas party with friends. Hooray for white elephant gifts! Last year I got a pink lawn flamingo that had no post.

Unfortunately it's almost December now, which means I'll have to start thinking about presents. You know how dads are always the hardest people to buy presents for? Well, my dad's birthday is on Christmas Eve. So every year, I (and everyone else in my family) have to think up two dad presents at the same time.

My mom threw it away! She thought it was funny and then tossed it. I don't even remember its name. (The girl who gave it to me put a name tag on it.)

I don't have the dad problem, but my mom's birthday is Jan 9th. Thinking up two gifts is pretty difficult.

My father's birthday is on the 22nd of December, and my mothers is on the 1st of January (new year's baby). Its a bit trying on my bank account buying them both birthday and Christmas gifts at the same time, but my parents live a spartan existence, so it makes me happy to get things for them I know they'll really like.

Dads are easy to get stuff for! My dad (whose birthday is on Januar 2nd, so two gifts for him as well) gets really happy if we get some black t-shirts, black sweaters, socks, gloves, practicaly outdoor clothing etc, and if there's anything specific he wants (like a book or CD or something), he'll actually come out and say exactly what it is. Moms are worse, though. My mom will be totally vague about what she wants, and has fucking weird taste, so it's impossible to get her something that we think she will actually like, and also something that is sort of practical, because she's always complaining about too much stuff. Gah, I dread going Christmas shopping with my brothers.

But it's almost December, and while December pre-20th is all kinds of hell because of school, I can't wait. I broke my no clementines before December-rule, but tomorrow (since the 30th is a Sunday), I'm totally going to go buy Christmas soda, gingerbread and some kind of Christmas candy, and then I'll finally listen to my Christmas music playlist.

(Yes, I love Christmas.)

Next wednesday my flatmates and I are doing a Christmas meal for 8 people (including ourselves). It also happens to be the day that a good friend of mine graduates and is one of the last stops on her honeymoon. Oh my!

We're having fresh prawn cocktails as something to nom before the meal, leek and potato soup for the starter, a festive beef wellington with roast potatoes, honeyed parsnips, roast veg (including carrots, turnips and sweet potatoes), Yorkshire puddings and gravy for the main followed by sugar free trifle for the dessert (one of the guests is diabetic).

NOM NOM NOM! I will maybe post pictures and recipes in the cooking thread one day.

The only bit of christmas that I am ok with starting before December is gift-buying. I have a pretty large immediate family and a growing ring of various in-laws and people on my lists, so I get started shopping in early November just to give myself a chance to think of something really good for each person. Half-assed gifts are not worth purchasing.

That said, anyone have a working copy of mario kart for nintendo 64 they want to sell me? Nowhere around here has it and ebay can kiss my ass.
(I want to put it in an Xmas stocking for Chris)

Dads are easy to get stuff for!

That's funny... I have the exact opposite problem.  My mom would be happy with a bottle of lotion and a new pair of slippers, year after year.  My dad has really eclectic, specific tastes and is a terrible liar when he's disappointed (on the upside, though, when you hit it just right, it's really gratifying).

I'm at my parents' house for Thanksgiving, and we're not going to be here for Christmas.  My parents have a baby grand and an upright piano, which I really miss when I'm away (having taken ten years of piano lessons).  So last night, we broke out the Christmas carol book, and my dad, boyfriend, and I jammed for two hours variously on piano, piano, electric guitar, violin, drum, and harmonica.  Family and music are my favorite parts of Christmas.

Also, there will not be any snow and when I go pee-pee, the toilet flushes the other way.

I will feel so very lost.

So how's about that Wal-Mart employee who got stomped to death by Black Friday shoppers today? The worst part was that people just kept streaming in while the emergency response crew was working on him. Nobody gave two shits that the man had been killed by their own feet, they just wanted to save a few fucking dollars. Absolutely obscene.

And they're not going to prosecute anyone because of the nature of the crime. Sick. I hope the tramplers suffer from horrible PTSD flashbacks the rest of their lives.

We did do a little bit of shopping today on the way back from my parents' house, but all for us because we are selfish. They had a $1 per trade paperback sale at this out of the way comic book store, so, we bought 40. Haha. Mostly indie comics too, rock.

I am asking for Guitar Hero III for Xmas along with an extra guitar for my boy and that's it. I'm getting my sister Wii games, but I don't know about my parents. I thought about getting my mom some old TV show on DVD but I don't think she watches DVDs, just cable. And my dad is even worse, all he does is watch Golf TV. I got some really cool stuff for the boy though.

This is the first year I won't have a tree, because our newest cat is climb-happy. I may make one out of cardboard.

I just love it when people get into the holiday spirit :)

Dark humor aside, I am totally thinking of getting my lady a piece by an Albanian artist who lives in a small town just north of here called Krujė. My girl is an artist, which is the 'thoughtful' part. He paints scenes from the town as well as from other places in Albania, which is the 'unique' part. I'm pretty much set with her.

As for my stepbrothers, I'm probably going to get them some of the felted wool hats that they make in the same town. I'll probably get them the Fushė-Krujė style ones (sortof like a white, woolen fez without the tassel). My dad will probably get one of those ash trays shaped like the multitudes of bunkers they have here. As for my stepmom, she'll probably get some shopkas, which are felted wool indoor slippers. Here in Albania, the price of wool is absurdly cheap by American and European standards, and that's even when they're charging me 10 times what they would charge an Albanian.

As for my mom, she loves to cook, and she can't get good Indian food supplies here in Albania, so I am thinking of getting her some of those for Christmas.

I barely left my house today. I just cooked breakfast food and watched firefly dvds all day.

Anyway, I'll be heading down to my grandparents' place in D.C. on (I think) the 21st, as I do most years. They have a big party at their house on Christmas Eve, and then we have a big family dinner/birthday party for my dad on Christmas (he has the misfortune of being an xmas baby.)

I bought my brother a copy of the GOTY edition of Morrowind because he loves that game to untol levels. We're getting our dad a new golf glove and maybe a new set of golf balls because he likes that sort of thing. We'll probably also kick in for a bracelet for our step-mum but I have no idea what I'm getting for my mother. I'll probably get her a card, write an insincere note in it or something. Or maybe a dvd of some trashy romantic comedy. She loves that shit.

December is always a busy present month for our family because my brother's birthday is on the 16th, mine is on the 17th and my mother's is on the 31st, plus Christmas.  Also one of my housemate's birthdays is on the 11th and the other one's birthday is on the 28th...it is going to be a month of a million parties.  In fact, I get 2 birthday parties this year!

So far I have ordered my brother's birthday gift, worked out his Christmas gift and bought myself a million presents.  I also have the housemates birthday and Christmas presents wrapped up and in the lounge to torture them with. hee.

I only have 5 Christmas presents left to buy though I think, plus a few silly ones for my friends I am having Christmas with.

And tonight is our work Christmas party! wooooo!

Christmas always sucks for me, I can never buy anyone gifts because I have barely enough money to scrape by. But I won't get into that.
I'll probably spend Christmas one day with my Mom, and one day with my Dad. There'll be arguments, and I might end up not going to either my Mom's or my Dad's. I might just stay home. Its something I've never really done before.

Phil is right to be depressed about missing the Boston meetup, because there will be epic Muppet Christmas Carol karaoke. I am talking full blown death metal Marley and Marley (It can be done. Shane and I got drunk and did it two Aprils ago) and an attempt at a thrash worthy rendition of Scrooge.

Christmas...oh fucking Christmas...The trend of Christmas antipathy really grates me sometimes. Yeah, sure, if you wanna go hide in a corner because you hate fun and puppies and candy canes and everything that is pleasant in life, go ahead, but all these far whatever the fuck anti-Christian goons who hate it for some misguided notion of religion are beyond me. Christmas stopped being about religion well before most of our lifetimes (And really, in most of its history, it was never much about religion, mostly just the eighteen and nineteen hundreds and even that is spotty). Christmas, at this point in history, is merely an excuse to make merry oneself and enjoy the comfort and company of friend, family and happy acquaintance.

I've never been a religious man, but I've always loved Christmas. Even after a series of time where I had something like three absolutely terrible Christmases in a row, I simply cannot break the habit of overall being in a better mood in the season. I actively tried to be bitter for the sake of it back in 2006, but that crashed and burned after the first Christmas Tree I saw for the year.

I love just about every facet of the season. Even in a rather isolationist area like Boston where people keep to themselves, everyone is just that much friendlier this time of year. I even like the outrageously busy shopping season. It would probably be so much easier (And cheaper) to just order everything online, but I just can't break the ever enjoyable habit of going to the mall with a cup of disgusting, yet so much fun to drink, Dunkin Donuts hot chocolate and taking in the season while doing some Christmas shopping.

I love Halloween and Thanksgiving as much as the next person, but I really don't generally mind the head start to Christmas, especially in times like these where some stores really need the extra cash flow to survive. I do find situations like the aforementioned Wal-Mart incident repugnant, but those people miss the whole point of the season. It's not about getting the coolest gift for the best price, it's about taking it easy and admiring everything good about life and doing one's best to spread it. I've never done my shopping before Thanksgiving, but I've also never lacked for a proper gift for anyone I cared about, even waiting and doing my shopping at my own pace.

Probably the best Christmas of my life was my Senior year of High School. My friend's parents had just gotten laid off at the same time. Shit was rough for them, yet they still chose to try and celebrate Christmas. They couldn't afford gifts (They weren't well off to begin with), but they at least had a little Charlie Brown type Christmas Tree going on. A few of us decided the best course of action was for a bunch of us to forgo getting each other anything and just get gifts for them. It was a great feeling, and his mom was very touched (Which was great, as we all loved her to death). Pretty much everyone worth a damn in our circle of friends got involved (Especially touching considering I was one of the few that actually had a job or any form of disposable income). Ask Rachel anytime, I am not a typically generous person, but Christmas always loosens my wallet.

I don't have any specific Christmas traditions, but I have many conventions I like to repeat. Far and away, I cannot get through the season without watching 'Muppet Christmas Carol,' to the point it's on my iPod (And yes, I am watching it right now at work). One year in High School, we were putting on a production of Christmas Carol and about six of us involved were lobbying hard to include Marley and Marley (Sadly, to no avail) I'm also quite partial to 'Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown,' 'Rudolph,' 'Doug's Christmas' (Not that Disney garbage, I'm talking the classic where Porkchop gets put in the pound), 'Nightmare Before Christmas' (A Hot Topic cliche, but fuck it, it's a fun Christmas movie) and bunches of others.

Christmas has always been big in my family, though many things have fallen to the wayside lately. My brother, gramma and I probably are the biggest fans (Chad and I got it from our gramma), but it's pretty big throughout. We used to make multiple stops on Christmas Eve, but now it's pretty much just Christmas morning with my immediates and our gramma (My mom's side stopped doing a party when everyone started having their own children too young for late parties and we had a falling out with my dad's side a few years back). My brother, mother and I used to go out annually to check out the Christmas lights when Chad and I were young, though that started to fall away once our hometown started getting less and less Merry. I keep that on my own by wandering the city to see the lights at the commons and downtown.

Suffice to say: I loves me some Christmas.

Also, for Christmas music, I am quite partial to Trans-Siberian Orchestra and, obviously, the Muppet Christmas Carol soundtrack.

My current ideas:
earring display racks/frames (etsy)
wine jellies (napa valley, dragonfly)
miracle berry tablets (thinkgeek, miraclefruitplus)
wwf animal adoptions

Phil is right to be depressed about missing the Boston meetup, because there will be epic Muppet Christmas Carol karaoke. I am talking full blown death metal Marley and Marley (It can be done. Shane and I got drunk and did it two Aprils ago) and an attempt at a thrash worthy rendition of Scrooge.

Buddy-ro, that was last August. We went to a Sox game two Aprils ago.

I am convinced you probably know better than I do what I wasted my 1,000th post on.

Also, it's been like a decade, but I still can't get used to the WWF being the World Wildlife Fund. That made Ruyi's last gift idea make about five times less sense to me.

P.S. Fuck you, pagebreak, now no one will ever see my long-ass "Christmas Rocks and You Can All Go Fuck Yourselves" rant.

My boyfriend's family put up our Christmas tree on the first. I'm kind of upset because we didn't get to decorate it together. My boyfriend's sister did it all before anyone was up yesterday.  :-(  It looks very pretty, though. We got an artificial tree this year because  our dogs like to mark it and Colorado's so dry that it loses most of its needles by around Christmas, no matter how late we get it.

Tomorrow night, as long as it doesn't snow too much, we'll be going to see the Christmas lights at the Botanical Gardens.

Usually we all get up early in the morning to open presents, then their dad goes back to bed (He has a really weird schedule and usually doesn't get up until 12). I don't know if that'll be how it goes this year because I might have to work.  During the day, we play board games/video games and then at night we watch A Christmas Story. There are also usually many phone calls during the day by various family members. It's just so much more low key than any major holiday my family celebrates.

I'm going to Barnes and Noble Friday while my boyfriend does volunteer work there and buying gifts for my boyfriend's mom and sister, and perhaps his dad. That leaves my boyfriend whom I'm struggling with in terms of gift ideas. I thought about getting him Spore, but it's on his Amazon wishlist, so I thought someone else might get it for him. I've also thought of a new comforter for his bed since the one he has now is really old and kind of falling apart. Wii Music or band shirts are my last options.

yeah but its like only the 3rd, Christmas ain't a comin' for another 21 days... I'd hope you've got enough time between now and then to have a dinner...

As it stands, my family is gonna be spending Christmas in Tejas, pendejo. We're drivin' down after classes get out for me and my brothers, and we're going to be spending Christmas with our cousins, and then one of them is gettin' married on the 26th. They are accepting gifts at their registry at Target or donations to like Christian Children's Fund or something like that. Man, holidays. I'm already remembering why I hate going to visit extended family during the holidays in the Bible Belt.

I got my Christmas overtime hours back last week and I've only got 11 extra hours rather than the 22 I was wanting (:-() but nevertheless that is extra moneys and somewhere to be that is not my house.

The problem with Christmas is that if anyone comes to visit, the whole house has to be cleaned from top to bottom for them. And obviously visitors come more often at Christmas than at other times of the year. So there is a lot of cleaning, and a lot of stressing. Also I have to spend Christmas Day with my mum's partner's family, who I have only met once last Christmas and who intimidate me a bit. I'm not very good with people I don't know and I really want to spend Christmas Day watching the astonishingly good television programming and relaxing. It's been a busy term and I don't really want to spend my one totally free day trying to be polite to a bunch of relative strangers who are all much older than me and from a completely different background. Is this unreasonable? I'm not going to kick up a fuss because it's Christmas and all, but I just want to know if I'm really being selfish here.

On the plus side, tomorrow is the street party late night shopping Christmas extravaganza, where the entirety of the town turns into a fairground and all the shops stay open until 10pm. I get paid tomorrow morning so I'll be able to buy all my presents and look at the lights and listen to the bands and have an awesome time and then there are fireworks and it is the best event in the whole of the year and I'm excited about it!

Last year I got a card saying some african dude got a bike for christmas.

Thankyou for figuring out what the hell I'm going to get my older sister. There's a world vision store in the city that sells all sorts of fair trade stuff and it does the cards like that. The best thing about these gifts is that you can just recycle the card when the card recycling thing happens (they're all made from recycled paper) and it's like you never got a present in the first place. The gifter fulfills the requirements of the gifting season, the giftee doesn't end up with clutter and someone who probably doesn't already have too much crap ends up with something useful. Everyone wins.

I'm flying to California on Friday. I'm sortof half-excited. On one hand, I get to see good friends and the few cool people on my dad's side of the family. On the other hand, my normally kindof boring dad gets even MORE boring around Christmas time, because the weather is constantly changing and it fucks with any of his projects that are related to woodworking. So there'll be pretty much nothing to do when I'm there except talk about things we'd rather be doing.

And that house is fucking freezing (since nobody ever puts any fucking wood in the fireplace) so I probably shouldn't bring my Jaguar with me since nitrocellulose finishes have a nasty tendency to shrink and, consequently, crack and start wearing off. I like finish wear, I just don't want to accelerate it. God damn it.

I went shopping for christmas presents this evening, and all I ended up with is a new book and a pair of pants for myself. While I'm rather enjoying lying here in my new pants and reading my new book and drinking my housemate's rum, I can't help but feel that I'm doing it wrong.

Also fuck I have to buy a secret santa thingy for one of the guys at work. All I know is that he's a middle-aged microbiologist who likes bird watching and making inappropriate comments. If there was some book in existence of terrible dirty bird puns like "Look At That Pair Of Spotted Boobies" it would probably be the ideal gift, but I don't think this will be easy to find.

The problem with that would be that if he's a bird watcher, he probably already has binoculars that are way better and more expensive than what would be common to give as secret santa-gifts.

I have that issue with Christmas present for a couple of friends of mine. There's one girl who loves art and anime and cute things, but I don't know what to get her, because in the anime and cute things department I'm kinda lost, and in the art-department things I could get her she already has more expensive and better versions of.

Wouldn't you feel like an absolute shit if your friend bought you a $100 gift but you could only really afford to spend around $20 on them? I know not everyone's the same, but most people I've ever encountered prefer people avoid getting them expensive gifts if they can't afford to reciprocate. It comes off somewhere between "I am a shitty friend who can't budget properly enough to get them a nice gift" and "the fuck do they have to rub it in?"

lamest christmas party ever.

I am pretty sure that I could beat that if I put you, Eed and Linds into a room together. It would likely be four hours of yarn talk.

Has anyone done that thing in this thread where they are all classic grinch and I hate Xmas bloo bloo blooo yet?

Maybe. A bloo bloo bloo it must be lonely up on your mountain watching all the Whos have fun while you cry all alone into your scotch and small yappy dog.

Okay yay, I got my stepmom some astronaut ice cream from Thinkgeek (she is a home ec teacher and likes food), and my dad, stepbrothers, and my good friend are getting some cool shirts (also from Thinkgeek). Still working on what I can get my big sis, but it'll probably be able to wait until we meet up in London right after Christmas. And I got my lady one of those coffee mugs that looks like a paper cup (Ruyi, you are a fucking angel for that suggestion), because she drinks something like 3467465 cups of coffee a day.

Still no clue what to get my mom, though. I don't want to give her the same thing as my stepmonster, but she also has just about everything ever that could possibly be related to food. I realized that we're going to be going to Britain right after Christmas, so getting her Indian food supplies is just going to be redundant, because that and English cheddar are the only things she ever buys there.

Just to derail slightly, what's the deal with Canadian Thanksgiving? I know American Thanksgiving is this creepy holiday based around a very dubious story about the colonists and the Native Americans coming together that completely erases how fucked the colonisation of America was, but what are Canadians celebrating??

As for Christmas... I am ever so slightly offended at having to celebrate Christian holidays all through the year but whatever. Too much of a pain to change. Traditionally our Christmases suck though I generally love buying gifts but have no bloody money this year so it's not much of a holiday season for me. Working Boxing Day and 2nd Jan, probably have some sort of food-orientated-thing with my family and my partner's and drink too much. Kickboxing's running straight through so that's cool.

Bought my mother a Lush bath thingy in lieu of the real present I can't afford, might see if I can scrape in enough money to get my little brother and sister (9 & 7) a bow so I can take them out shooting. Good bonding. I guess I did throw about $200 at a secret santa to someone in Canada... I really like buying gifts, and it was too much fun to be sensible.

Thanksgiving is more a celebration of the harvest than anything else, really. Hence, the Canadians celebrate on themselves at an earlier point in the year with their harvest coming earlier.

And if you're seriously bothered by Christmas because of religious connections, you probably have been hiding from society for the past two or three decades.

Hey I'm bothered by creepy consumerism too.  :-D It doesn't upset me per se, I'd just really rather not have religious holidays of any stripe - there are lots of religions around, it'd be more fair to have secular holidays and let everyone who's genuinely passionate about their religion celebrate it on their own time.

I like how my family does Christmas-Minimal religion beyond some of the songs, not a lot of the wild consumerism.  The whole family has actually decided to make this year an official anti-junk year.  It is pretty cool.  My mother and aunt are adopting a family (you buy presents and dinner for a family that couldn't afford it) as their "gift" to each other.  I dig this idea a lot.

I do like holiday shopping though.  I get this sick, sentimental glee when I find the perfect item for someone.  I have done pretty well with gift buying this year.  I usually designate about ten dollars per person, but I actually managed to get by on less this year, which is good because I am broke like everyone else.

My suggestions for gifts that are low budget, but always well received:

Used books.  If you have a used book store near you, spend a few hours browsing the shelves.  You will usually find some really excellent books that are out of print or otherwise not found at Barnes and Noble or similar chain stores. For example, this year I found my sister a book on the Ghosts of the Civil war, which I couldn't even believe existed.  She's a Civil War buff who likes ghost hunter shows.  It was too perfect.

Booze.  Who wouldn't appreciate a six pack of their favorite beer?  It won't last, but that's okay, and it's definitely something they like and will enjoy.

Knitted stuff.  Relatives love homemade shit.

Well you can always think of it as a celebration of the winter solstice like it was before christianity came around!

Along darkbluerabbit's line of thinking....beer/wine of the month clubs are always good (because that way even when the booze goes away it comes back in 30 days!)

Well, summer soltice here. And I pretty much do.

As for my present priorities, I am bad. I'm just gonna press lollies onto ze childrens and buy a bow later, I spent that money (*cough* and some) on a tea pot, flash green tea, and some massages for my partner instead. So much for not buying presents...

I'm about to sit down to eat an awesome Christmas dinner (pork steak, I guess? Something like that), and then it's time for cake and, uhm, whipped cream with cloudberry (so good!), and then some more cakes and presents.

Awesomeness to commence! My parents have even realized that they won't get anything more done tonight, so they're not as stressed right now. Merry Christmas, people!

I finally finished my shopping about an hour ago!

Of course I only started yesterday. I still have to my make my mom's present, though, which will be kind of annoying. I'm not sure if what I have planned will even work...I hope it does. If not, I won't have a present for my mom, and I will be screwed.

Tonight ended up being great for a while, then crappy, then okay. The food was excellent and while Christmas dinners now consist of just the five of us, as opposed to about 10 or more earlier years, it was mostly really nice. Everyone got along well for a while, then not so well, but then the ones who were left got along well and decided not to worry about things, which was great, for once. My mom tends to always worry about things and drive me insane, so it was a pleasant relief. Watching some lame ass Hallmark movie with Denise Richards and Dean Cain after the cakes kinda sucked, but ah well.

Tonight's gifts:
- Creative Inspire T10 speakers for my laptop and/or iPod
- About 3000kr, which will probably go towards the Tokyo-trip
- Gift certificate from H&M
- Two gift certificates for the cinema
- Some expensive Kerastase-stuff for my hair, but it's for dyed hair and hair that is exposed to the sun a lot? What? Not my hair.
- Okkervil River - The Stage Names
- Feist - The Reminder
- The movie "Once"
- Some silverware
- Minnie Mouse socks?
- Felted wool seating seating pad in the colors of my favourite football team
- Gloves
- Some weird little pouch that looked like it was from a toy store and some candy.

Overall, nice Christmas so far. Could've been better, if my arm didn't still hurt after a slight, uhm, argument, but I guess all things considered, still nice. Pretty pleased with the gifts, even though they weren't very exciting and I got more varied stuff last year, but I pretty much just asked for money and the speakers, so yeah..

This years Christmas Eve was awesome! Tomorrow I'm going to a Christmas brunch with dad's part of the family, and friday it's Christmas dinner with mom's part of the family. On the present note, this is what I got:

- An easel
- An acrylic painting set: paint, brushes, canvas and paint spatulas in a nice wooden suitcase (thank you, Jens!)
- A toasting iron/grill
- Two sets of frosted window film, which is great because my apartment is on the first floor, and I'd love to have some privacy without keeping the curtains shut all the time.
- 200 kr
- One gift certificate at a record shop
- A necklace
- A scarf and a hat
- Blue scissors with beads who sparkle
- A pink toy car
- An old fashioned pharmaceutical jar who has the words Chinin. Sulfuric. inscribed on the front (old malaria medicine or something. Note: there was no medicine in the jar).
- Two towels
- A tool kit
- Fuzzy slippers who are extremely comfortable
- Scented candles and a pretty candle holder
- A sauce mug (I guess that's not the real name for it, but I don't know the English word for "sausenebb", if there is one at all. Help me out here if you can, fellow Norwegians.)

Thank you thank you thank you thank you soooo much, family and friends. Jens is the only one of them who will read this, but I'm writing it anyway because all of the gifts were so amazing. Thank you!

Oh, frosted window film! Any idea where I can get that? I have my curtains shut 24/7 because my dorm room window is on the 2nd floor, but faces the admin-building, so everyone and their sister walks by there every day, and you can basically see my entire room if they aren't pulled shut, but I just lose so much light that way.

I'm now finishing off Christmas Eve (well, technically it's Christmas Day now) by watching How I Met Your Mother (a Christmas episode (not on purpose), even!) with the nice brother. Good times.

My friend bought them at a store called "Designertorget", but I haven't seen that store anywhere outside of Oslo. If you're ever in Oslo, go to Byporten Shopping, that's where it's located. I bet you can find some on the internet too, but my guess is that's sorta expensive. Good luck finding it anyway!

Oh hey! I literally started this yesterday. At the beginning when Azerrad is being all "FUCK YEAH DIY" I was kind of put off because it seemed really self-righteous, but one I got into it it is fun and informative and pretty well written. This years haul:

You're also getting a scarf from me when I finish it and see you next!

So far I have only gotten a few of my presents, but will get more when I see my family tomorrow. So far I received:

Bill Bailey dvds! Now I have all his shows that are available, whoo!
Pop Charts book - a book of those graphs and charts based on songs
a $25 sanity voucher

I did spend today (christmas) with Ben's family, meeting some of his relatives and his brother's inlaws and taking photos of his new niece and eating a lot of food. Oh god, the food. Tomorrow I am driving up to Newcastle to see my family where there will be more food. I am pretty sure they will like what we got them, so I am pretty sure the 2 hour drive will be worth it.

I had a very good Christmas! Received a lot of gift cards..which are nice, but my feeling is kind of: if you want to have me choose my own gift, well, why not give me a check? It may be less "fun," but wouldn't it be more practical? I am honestly never going to use 25 dollars at Kohls. All of my gifts, to my family members, friends and girlfriend were successes though!

That's one thing I've noticed as I've gotten older. As much as I love getting gifts, I like it even better when I have a really great present to give to someone that I know they'll love.

- A gift card to REI -- gonna buy some ski socks with that
- A lift ticket to a local ski area
- A beanie (not a ski one, one to just wear around)
- A fleece

The Arse

As much as it pains me to say this, that new Arsenal home shirt is really growing on me. At least it doesn't have a stupid racing stripe down the back like ours does.

Guys, I did not get many gifts, but I did get AWESOME gifts. BEHOLD.
-2GB iPod shuffle (blue)
-Electro-Harmonix Double Muff fuzz/overdrive pedal
-Vans that...don't actually fit. Need to exchange those
-Fender Custom Shop calendar
-ticket (in a luxury box, no less) for the Red Sox game in Baltimore, August 1st. I'm going with my dad, his girlfriend, and some of their friends.

I got two totally rad gifts this year:
Nintendo DS from Jon
a GPS system for my car from my dad

Not so rad gifts include:
framed photo
a bra
makeup
a check (money is great, but where's the THOUGHT?)

This is the first year since I was in high school that my dad got me a gift, and I was quite nervous considering the things he used to buy me, but he did well.

my dad and stepmum gave me a leatherman with my name on it

That is bad feng-shui (http://www.fengshuidiva.com/PRESSRELEASES/PR20051201GIFTSUPERSTITIONS.htm). I know this because my fiancee read it about a week after giving me a Leatherman.

her: *reads book on feng-sui* It's bad luck to give someone a knife as a gift? Man, who gives a knife as a gift?
me: You got me a knife for my birthday.
her: NOOOOOOOOO

That feng-shui shit is retarded. My roommate (also my teacher) gave me a sword as a gift before and I took it as the highest form of praise, mostly because it was his sword before that. Maybe it's different if it's passed down, but I feel that it brought us closer as I consider him a brother now moreso than ever.

My christmas haul:
$90 from my dad
$20 from my uncle
A thisrt with a badass tiger on it (this was actually an overdue birthday present. I guess I was going to get a car stereo originally, but I had already bought one, so I got a tshirt instead? Still awesome though)
A blanket, a cover for kleenex boxes (my mom's friends, they are craft people)

Overall, I was just a bit disappointed on the gift front, but I did get to spend time with my family, so that makes me pretty happy. I was really hoping to get more straight up cash so that I could actually put some money away for my laptop that I want to buy.
Oh, I also got cookies from my grandma, and I took them to work and offered them to people because I do not need to eat two containers full of homemade cookies.

Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for life. Teach a man how to make alcoholic fish, and he will be drinking pretty often for not much money for the rest of his life.

What I'm trying to say is that I got a whole bunch of homebrew supplies for christmas. Wooo!

I had a rad as Christmas!  It is still going!  I go home in a few hours though and have to go straight to work. Lame.  I have spent the last 4 days sitting around in our friend's house (the party house!) eating and drinking and hanging out and listening to music and watching alot of QI and other things.  A Christmas spent with Stephen Fry is a good Christmas indeed.

I got a terabyte external hard drive, a rad as portrait of my hot english girlfriend Sarah and I,a rad as portrait of Nick Cave, and a dvd of The Cat Returns.  Pics of the portraits when I get home, they are huge and awesome.

Also I bought myself something awesome, but that absolutely has to be unveiled with pictures.  Half of you will make fun of me and it will be great.

My christmas was quite sad this year, as two of my three sisters couldn't come home. Oh well, it means we see them next with the added bonus of a baby. However, there was lots of good food and champagne.

I got:
Zombie Haiku (an excellent book)
Paper Towns and An abundance of Katherines by John Green
Gift Certificates for the liquor store and book store
Barack Obama election poster from Bryant Park (great because I'm Canadian)
15 minute vegetarian cookbook
Cash money- which was spent on a tattoo
Lots of chocolate

So we just had our family Christmas. It sucked for me. Except for two things. The things that sucked were some deodorant and body wash from my grandparents and a calendar from my cousin.

Man, I have such mixed feelings about the Killing Joke. On the one hand, Joker was completely neutered by the CCA and comics like the Laughing Fish and the Killing Joke helped cement him as a murderous sociopath, rather than the goofy bastard he was once reduced to. On the other hand, sociopaths tend to be unpleasant, and the Killing Joke cheerfully dwells on that idea, and that's not really my thing.

Plus, you know, women in fridges.

my dad and stepmum gave me a leatherman with my name on it

That is bad feng-shui (http://www.fengshuidiva.com/PRESSRELEASES/PR20051201GIFTSUPERSTITIONS.htm). I know this because my fiancee read it about a week after giving me a Leatherman.

Fuck that, for my 16th my friend ellie got me penknife, and that thing had like a million blades and was super cool.

Giving someone blades for a gift cannot send harsh messages if that person loves sharp pointy things.

Man, I nearly bought myself a Leatherman multitool the other day. Not because I am particularly handy, but because I'm so incompetent that I don't really need to go around handicapping myself with a lack of basic, useful tools. I would have been really excited to get one as a gift.

oh btw. I hate you right now.

So we just had our family Christmas. It sucked for me. Except for two things. The things that sucked were some deodorant and body wash from my grandparents and a calendar from my cousin.
The good presents were a $25 Visa Gift Card which I can use anywhere! And my aunt got me The Killing Joke.
Yay for good presents. Boo for bad presents.

I know that you're 14 and still living with your folks so deoderant and body wash are kind of lame gifts but let me tell you, when you live on your own you will love stuff like this because it means you don't have to buy that kind of stuff yourself. The only thing I'm disappointed with this christmas is that no one gave me any socks. Another year has passed and I didn't receive any. Ah well.

iPod. The plans are still too outrageous in Canada, and the storage too small, to consider its older sister. This way I can replace my old Legacy without sacrificing any of my music collection. I've already got a cell, and all the places I frequent have wifi.

PS. I would totally love deoderant for Christmas. I am so glad I got a flashlight.

I'm sure I would love it if I were on my own. I understand where you're coming from but seriously.. for a 14 year old kid? I gave her a whole wish list and she gets me deodorant.
And it was cheap store brand too.
Now I shall stop complaining and think how little spent on people this Christmas.

Eh, deoderant isn'ts not something I'd exactly get excited about either, honestly, but it's important to keep things in perspective. Really, sometimes grandparents do give kinda dull gifts, but there's typically a number of good reasons for it. For example, in my grandparent's case, they had 8 children who then had 3 or 4 children each, so when I was your age, I was one out of 27 grandchildren and a couple great grand children. Considering they were already in their 70s even back then and living on a fixed income, I never really expected more from them then a card, some candy and maybe 5 or 10 dollars. And really, there was nothing with that.

I got some socks and they are awesome. I'm wearing a pair right now! They have really cute kitties on and they're made of that awesomely soft sock fabric that makes your feet feel like they are in foot heaven.

Yeah it's definitely true that you reach a point where you're glad of bath things for Christmas. Now that I have a job I have to buy my own toiletries, because I do use quite a lot of them, and I was very chuffed to receive three lots of shower gel and two lots of hand cream because really, I don't earn enough that those things are no longer luxuries.

I never said buying luxury toiletry items was hard Spluff old mate. It's just that hey, when I get that stuff it's just one more thing I don't have to buy myself and that is A-OK with me. And yeah they are kind of lame gifts but Alex also has a point in that our grandparents probably don't have as much money to throw around, especially with the economy the way it is. Belts are tightening all over and man am I talking weird today, I need to go and sit quietly for a while.

Things I got!
A dark green leatherbound sketchbook (it is beautiful, I think I'm going to use it as my journal when I visit america)
A book of old horror movie posters
Black Holes (a really surreal graphic novel)
A really ugly indian shirt (luckily it is real comfy and light so it's my new pyjama shirt)
Clothes!

Things I am getting:
A refurbished record player.

It was a good christmas, also I found out that tofurkey can actually be incredibly absurdly delicious.

Ooh, yay! I ordered a new shirt and my mom is replacing our Playstation because it doesn't work. If I had a choice, I could've payed for the Playstation and she could've gotten me a 360. She said she couldn't afford them.

Alex C: Yeah, my grandparents wouldn't get anything 'frivolous'. They were young during the depression and they still live in it.

I think my parents may have been the recipients of the most awesome gift in our house this Christmas.

I have a feeling, based on who they are, that the gifters do not know the alternative meaning of a banana hammock, and thus fail to see the funny, which makes it funnier.

christmas, which i usually spend in markham with my parents, is also the one time of year my sister and her husband visit canada. i don't really do the christmas thing and either does my family, but said sister has an incredible job with a ridiculous salary and her and her husband are both extremely well off, so every time something in their house gets replaced with a new thing or they somehow end up with something they don't need and can't return, they put it aside and give it to me the next time they are in canada cos they know i will use almost anything. usually it is just small things, but this year i somehow ended up with -
- an almost brand new pair of very warm winter boots
- a digital camera
- a gorgeous watch
- a big pile of books
- a big pile of tea
- a bunch of lovely scarves
now i am in a weird place because even though i love it all, and to them it was somehow crap they didn't want and couldn't get rid of, i am stuck feeling guilty no matter what on account i did not do christmas to them cos there was an unwritten family agreement and then they went and kind of did christmas to me while i wasn't looking. it is too late for me to do christmas to them because christmas is already over and it will be obvious i am only doing it to reciprocate. doing christmas to someone when you say you won't isn't allowed, damnit. those were the rules. this holiday is dumb.

All you have to do is give a coin to the person giving you a knife for a gift.

Christmas was good! Christmas day we went and saw Doubt (which, really, was kind of a hilarious thing to see on Christmas just because it's so serious), had dinner at home, and then watched more movies. I got:
- Movies: The Dark Crystal (yay, as the VHS died ages ago) and a box set of early Alfred Hitchcock movies
- Socks - I actually want socks all the time
- Sweaters, which I really needed and really like
- Waffle maker. Waffles are the Best Thing.

I had a pretty epic haul this year:

-bathrobe and matching pajamas
-books: Basic Writings of Existentialism, Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke, a biography of a famous actor whose name I can't remember off the top of my head.
-DVDs: West Side Story, a documentary about the Buena Vista Social Club
-shirts, and a sweater
-a horrendously hipster-ish scarf
-a blanket (it's actually a dog blanket, my aunt works in a pet store)
-food: delicious Chili mix (which has already been eaten), wasabi coated dried peas, more chocolate than I know what to do with
-tea
-Cycling sunglasses
-Money to buy parts for my vintage road bike to fixed-gear conversion.

I think my parents may have been the recipients of the most awesome gift in our house this Christmas.

That just might be The Best Thing. I giggled so much.

Okay, so. After Christmas I did some shopping for myself to supplement the gifts I had already received, and I got-
-Sweater dress
-Turtleneck
-Sweater vest
-Four new bras, one with matching underwear
-Blank DVDs
-Body splash

Yay Christmastime!
