Title: Accordions!
Post by: tuna ketchup x on 15 Dec 2008, 20:24
So one of my friends got a killer thrift store find for me: an accordion! "Hey, Tuna, ninety bucks for an accordion, you want?" YES. It is a student 12-bass model and is red and is apparently in near mint shape. I pick it up this weekend. I am so excited!

Does anyone here play the squeezebox? Any good starter rock/klezmer books? I already ordered the Mel Bay primer in preparation, but I'm guessing the actual songs are going to be kind of lame. I'm hoping I can figure this thing out and not just leave it in the closet like the kid who owned it. I already play piano so maybe that will help. Anyone want to start a gypsy punk band?  :-D

Hey cool! A friend of mine just bought one as well, and they've started an "accordion club" in the park near where I used to live. From the only time I've picked one up, I think the hardest part will be learning the left-hand (?) chord buttons. I've been thinking about getting one myself, but I can't really justify it when I don't really play my harmonium or trumpet as much as I should...

If you already play piano you should be fine.  I'm not sure how versed in piano you are, but if you download a chord chart for the left hand side (stradella bass), you'll notice the buttons are arranged in the circle of fifths; that should make it easier to memorize the buttons.  Though I'm not sure what a 12 bass looks like, I'm assuming it's just less to worry about than a standard 120 bass.

YES. My friend Davis and I are supposed to start an avant garde steampunky street band. He plays cello, and I play drums.

dude, seriously. this friend of mine plays accordion and he is one of the most in-demand musicians in my town. anytime anyone is recording and they want an interesting instrument on such-and-such track, they call him up.

which, of course, is when he says, "Yeah, man, twenty bucks."

around here, most of the music dudes are good friends, so usually, he does it for free.

but my husband runs a little studio and whenever the artists are at a loss, he will suggest something, like: "Hey, this might sound cool with some accordian, lemme just call up my buddy" and they usually go for it. it is such a great instrument, it totally changes the entire tone of the song.

I know a guy who plays accordion. Accordions are just so cool.
If anyone has seen Amelie and knows the theme, La Valse D'Amelie, there is an accordion version on YouTube that I am absolutely in love with. Link is below.

Thanks for reminding me of Ten in the Swear Jar. If I weren't at work, It'd be blaring so hard.

Seriously, the only instrument better than an accordion is a set of turntables.  Enjoy being awesome.  Also for some cool accordion music you should check out Carlos Libedinsky's Narcotango albums, the Zydepunks (Three of whose albums I posted in the mediafire thread) and maybe some Jason Webley.
