Title: Winter.
Post by: masquerade on 10 Jan 2009, 21:00
I am particularly crabby towards this Godawful season after enduring steady snowfall for an entire day (was said to be around ten inches, but I don't believe the guy who said it...). SO. Bitch thread?

Post things you hate about winter. I'll start:

- Everything.

Okay kidding.

- When your nose gets stuffed up on one side but not another. Worst thing ever. WHY does this happen?
- People who have grown up in a snow-ridden state (Michigan, for example) but cannot for the love of God drive in the fluffy white stuff.
- Whitewashes. They suck. Especially when the person's bigger than you and you can't topple them over to get them back.

I fail to see how this is bloggish, other than the personal relation to the topic. To make it, you know... relateable.

The fact that when it is winter here, everybody on the forums is talking about how hot it is.

Stab them in the eye(s). I'm huddled next to a damn space heater.

Winter is bad. Admittedly it's relevant to location. But it's sucky in general because everything's dead. Or the weather's just sulky.

The fact that if you live in an area where it doesn't snow (hello, Alabama!) all you get is rain.
And mud. Lots, and lots, and lots of mud.

- People who have grown up in a snow-ridden state (Michigan, for example) but cannot for the love of God drive in the fluffy white stuff.
I spent two years in Michigan and encountered this every single day from October until almost April.

Also: an annoyance that is hilarious to laugh at...

- People who have never driven anywhere near a snow-ridden state, such as Michigan, and suddenly they have black ice. And hills. The accidents are sad, but watching them drive in it is funny.

I only hate Winter when it gets very slushy or when the state doesn't adequately salt the roads. Otherwise, I deal just fine.

Sadly this was me the other day. I moved up here from Atlanta last June. I'm excited because the highway is all clear and shiny and pretty and looks wonderfully safe to zip along on my merry way. I'm doing the speed limit (~seventy mph), but I notice that EVERYONE else is in the right lane doing about thirty. Then I get suspicious and think, "Huh, maybe these yankees know something I don't..." And move over and slow down.

OH.

- Cars that say they have "traction control" but all they really do is make your brakes feel weird when you're stopping and you bump into someone anyway. Granted, it was at like two mph, and there was no damage and I was wished a nice day, but still. Grumble.

when it snows a lot, and then the next day is warm enough for all the snow to melt, and then the next day the temperature drops below freezing point and all the melted snow turns into ice sheets. and then it snows on top of the ice so you don't know where the ice is. and then you don't own a car and getting anywhere requires shuffling along at the slowest possible pace and still managing to fall on your ass about 40 times between point a and point b.

last year i had a crazy landlord who demanded i keep the driveway shoveled at all times despite the fact that neither me nor any of the people i lived with had a car and it snowed heavily almost every single day for months. that might not be so much a winter thing as a dick landlord thing, but that sure made winter suck. i mean, we didn't do it but writing so many angry emails gets exhausting after a while.

i am okay with snow but i like my snow moving slowly and vertically. snow shouldn't ever go sideways. "it's snowing" should only ever mean that soft white flakes are gently falling from the sky, not that clumps of wet slush are rushing at what feels like thousands of kilometers an hour at you, directly into your face and your eyeballs. those are the days when i feel like it is okay to complain about how much winter sucks.
Title: Re: Winter.
Post by: RedLion on 10 Jan 2009, 22:23
I loathe winter. Absolutely loathe it. Everything is dead, fragile, blank, gray. There is hardly any sunlight. It's freezing. Most of the time must be spent indoors, you can't go outside to burn off energy doing much else than shoveling. Snow is pretty for the first week or so, but then it gets dirty and slushy and becomes an unappealing mess.

Note that I'm talking about hardcore Wisconsin winters, though.

This is like the best part about winter. I always get a running start and see how far I can slide.

Winter is probably the best season because:

- I get to wear a cool hat
- I get to wear a scarf my mom knit for me, and mittens my grandma knit for me
- Snowball fights
- Tobogganing
- Street hockey
- I actually really enjoy shovelling snow
- I find the cold weather refreshing
- Sweaters, all day urrday
- Being the first person to walk across a vast undisturbed field of fresh deep sparkly snow
- The feeling of warmth when you come back into the house after being outside in the cold
- Hot chocolate

Winter is awesome. It got up to about 60F today! I love winter because it's the 5 months that I get to actually wear my jackets and sweatshirts and stuff. Also, what is snow?

(I have never driven in snow, I cannot drive in snow I imagine, I also do not know how to put chains on my tires)
Title: Re: Winter.
Post by: michi-love on 11 Jan 2009, 00:09
Winter clothes. Well. If the sweater's too thick, it's too hot for in the house. If it isn't thick enough, you're freezing anywhere. For ladies, long-sleeved shirts often have open necklines. Because, you know, if I'm cold, of course I just want to expose more skin. Not to mention the irritation of itchy fabrics that come with winter clothing.
Not a big fan of winterwear, nope.
Plus, wearing the nice coats make me feel like a marshmellow. =/

Winter! Winter where I live goes down to maybe a little under 20C, so it's not particularly cold, but still. Winter means:

- Scarves!
- Beanie!
- Cardigans/jumpers!
- Hobo gloves!
- Boots and long socks!
- It is cold enough to drink lots of nice hot tea!
- Curling up under a blanket on the lounge while watching TV!
- Cold and rain meaning I can snuggle up in bed all day reading!
- Colds/Flus! (booo)
- Respective chest infections and maybe pneumonia! (double boo)

So far the positives outweigh the negatives, and when I am all grumpy about the cold people are generally complaining of the heat (silly northern hemispherians), so I can remember why I like winter. Winter is pretty tops.

I like winter.  Here in the UK these days, summer is just as wet, anyway!  In extreme weather, too cold is easier to deal with than too hot.  I'm also pretty whizz at driving in snow, often going through "closed" routes for the hell of it; but we're all allowed one mistake, I hope:

Black ice!

Aye, I admit that winter is when I tend to look my best, thanks to layers, long sleeves, good-quality sweaters, scarves, etc. And the cold and dark makes it extra nice to cuddle up with someone in front of a fire or with hot chocolate/tea/alcohol. Other than that, though, the season is just a wash for me.

Winter:

Pros
All the pretty people have to dress up warm, thus losing their attractiveness BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
It's an excuse to wear clothes that suit me.
Its cold and crisp and when you wake up early in the morning and fix yourself a sandwhich it feels awesome.
Its a test of relationship's, if you can't survive the winter then its none too strong.
Its dark and cold and a great time to be with one's friends to cheer yourselves up.

Con's
Its cold and dark and lonely, I have seen more people suffering big dark teatimes of the soul over winter than any other season.
There are no other con's.

(sorry about the spelling mistake)

i live in istanbul, northwest turkey, and we used to have at least 10-15 days of hardcore snowing action every year - which took another 10 to 15 days to melt. this year though, it just isn't happening. gotta have something to do with climatic change. all we got till now was a half-day rainy-snow. too bad i bought new boots last month :/ winter has left us.

Winter's goddamned beautiful.
When I was home in December I sat awake and listened to the wind howl and scream and sing.
Every time you go out to the store on the corner it is like you have achieved something by not dying!

The cold is amazing. Life is about embracing all the things you might feel. I love the snow and the cold.

Winter's probably easier to manage with a significant other because you can spend SO MUCH time together curled up on the couch watching movies or doing other things... My relationships are always more snuggly and lovey-dovey in winter. And why do you think so many babies are born in late summer/early fall? Because people have sex during the winter. Lots of sex. There's nothing else to do.

In California at sea level, winter's just a joke.  There's a high of 82 degrees today, and it's been in the high 70s all week.  This isn't a heat wave; this is normal.  While the weather is gorgeous, and I feel like I shouldn't be complaining, I really want to bundle up in sweaters and make snow angels.  So what bothers me most about winter is that there isn't one, I guess?

But even here, it is an excuse to cuddle on the couch and watch movies.  At least then we can pretend the weather outside is frightful.

In the Californian DESERT/valley/whatever on the other hand, it gets really cold and sometimes is overcast for a really long depressing time and also it's foggy as shit. Like, visibility can get to ten feet. It is called Tule fog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tule_fog).

Really though winter is dandy.

I have lived in Wisconsin for my entire life.  We get awesome winters.  I love:
Watching our dogs play in the snow
Drunken sledding
Using the weather as an excuse to stay in with a hot beverage
Brisk walks
Breaking out my favorite outerwear
Building snowpeople and other age-inappropriate activities

Most things I hate about winter have to do with transportation, like:
Being unable to bike places without nearly dying (I got studded tires for Christmas, we'll see how they do)
Bad drivers
Trying to go uphill in slush with a standard transmission
When it's too snowy to run safely.
Losing my favorite outerwear (scarves are sneaky bastards).

I'm living on the Central Coast for school right now, and I'm not complaining either. Snow is fluffy and frozen and stuff, but I don't think I could do a 70-mile bike ride along the Pacific Coast Highway in ten feet of snow. If I couldn't ride my bike as much as I do (10,000+ miles a year), and not be able to ride - I would go crazy. When I need to experience snow, I could just take a 6-hour drive to Tahoe.  :-D

Have you ever spent a large amount of time with a person you are infatuated with, it quickly loses most of the grandeur and love you have lavished on it in your mind. Thats why winter is a hrad time, plus a lot of very evil little emotions end up making an appearence in winter than they usually would, being very very short tempered is one of the main ones.

I generally like the winter, and snow, I just would rather not have to be anywhere when it has snowed.  I enjoy shoveling, I love the way it looks like my yard is full of glitter when I am outside after dark and the flood light on the side of the house glints off of all the snow, I like leaving footprints and building snowmen and I love to watch the snow fall.  But driving... meh.  My car is not good in the snow and other people drive like idiots so I would rather just stay home and enjoy winter.  The snow covers all the ugly.  Plus my cats get awful snuggly when it is cold out since we keep the heat down so that's an added bonus too.

Eh, I agree with the short-tempered bit. My poor boyfriend gets his head bitten off much more than he did when it was warm. Then again he usually deserves it.  :-P Also, I haven't been infatuated since I was seventeen, thank you.

Good snow so far this year, too. Already been three times, hoping to get that into double digits by the end of the season.

It will NOT STOP here. Even if it's light little flakes, it just keeps going...

Plus my cats get awful snuggly when it is cold out since we keep the heat down so that's an added bonus too.

Ha, mine too! Little bitches. Have to trick them into loving me. This is also accomplished by waiting a little longer to feed them. I get hugs all over my ankles. Except for Nova... She just breaks things and yowls at the top of her voice until the situation is remedied. Sadly, I'm not kidding.

Winter sucks because it is way too cold.  I freeze in 70F weather sometimes, so this 14 degree bullshit sucks. Also, my car does not do well in snow.  I can't count the times this winter that i've almost hit a tree or slid into the opposite lane because of the slippery roads.

Well it's true, there were a couple of spiders.

I caught them in a jar and put them in the bushes outside.

Bah, it hit 46° C today according to the thermometer outside, I envy your winter, as I lack air conditioning.

I have lived in Arizona for 19 years and I cannot remember one instance where I've seen a scorpion outside of the zoo.

It is so, about 45 minutes drive south  if you have the expressway out

Not too near Port Lincoln, I hope ...

Luckily no, but it'll be a minimum of three weeks before a patch of Kuitpo, Douglas Gully, or some part of the Onkaparinga Gorge goes up in flames, doubtlessly taking forcing at least one person I know to evacuate.

Can I borrow some winter, guys? Just for the night? It is 35°C right now, too hot to sleep.

I used to live in the snow belt in NY and get hammered with lake effect snow.

I had to drive through the worst weather at 4 AM to go to the local TV station and type up the little scrolling "closed schools" graphic.

Like every single school and local business in the tri-county area would be closed and I still went to work every day in that crap (for very little money).

Then I had to drive to Syracuse for my other job through some of the worst winter weather ever.

Now I live in NE NY where it is cold as hell but there is less snow.  I can walk to work if I want to.

If I don't have to drive in it then I am fine with winter weather.

If I get enough sleep my immune system is amazing and I hardly ever get sick.

Beats hot summer weather hands down!  You can get in out of the snow and get warmed up right away.

39 tomorrow morning, but supposedly there's a change coming through at lunch-time and the afternoon will only be mid-20s. Bless you, you bizarre and magnificent Melbourne micro-climate!

Are there a lot of Aussies on this forum? That's odd and intriguing. And cool!

22°F right now, going down to -3° tonight. Sob.

One good thing that I've noticed though, is the result of all the plowing is a veritable mountain of snow at the end of most parking lots and scattered about most neighborhoods. I'm going to stock up on good warm clothing, and hollow out the top to make a snow-mountain fort. With an arsenal of snowballs a la Calvin and Hobbes. :D

My friends in college once taped themselves crashing into those parking lot snow mountains with shopping carts.

The high tomorrow will be -1 degrees. The high.

I have tried to be openminded, but no, no. Fuck you, winter.

It was -25C this evening. So I went skating, it was wonderful. Although it turns out that the Rideau Canal basically turns into a giant wind tunnel with the slightest breeze.
