Title: The Mann-Conomy Update
Post by: JD on 18 Feb 2009, 17:33
Am I the only one who still plays this game? I hope not.

So Valve has finally got around to releasing the next update. It's the Scout (http://www.tf2.com/scoutupdate)

It's gonna be a lot of fun to be a natascha wielding heavy or an engineer for a couple of days.

Holy shit, The Sandman.

Ultimate uber buster. That's a hell of a disadvantage too, though.

Dang.

The Energy drink looks interesting. The Achievements also look rather difficult.
Title: Re: Who's the tough guy now?
Post by: Ozymandias on 20 Feb 2009, 18:20
Nah, those achievements don't sound too bad. I can see getting most of those through normal play.

The map update makes me curious, though. It suggests the new scattershot will make the Scout even more ridiculously mobile.

I think this might be the best update for any class thus far. It's turning the scout into the ultimate support class.

The Ubersaw and the Blutsager were pretty good. Also, I've played on the Egypt map. It's pretty sweet.

Post by: bicostp on 23 Feb 2009, 14:07
So, updates to Fastlane? There's a map that could use a little attention. (I'm pulling a backup copy of the current version out of the .gcf anyway, just in case.)

It's currently 5 PM on Monday, and they haven't put up the Monday update. Don't you just love Valve Time?

Looks like there's a double-barrel shotgun and a payload race map coming.

What will be the next "Meet The X" video, Spy, Medic, or Pyro?

"Spies can now control which weapon the enemy team sees them holding. "

I like how they just slipped that in there. That should make the "waah disguises are useless" spies happy.

Actually, It feels a bit like a nerf because people always check you. Havent earned the weapons yet, servers are so clogged with scouts.
Title: Re: Who's the tough guy now?
Post by: bicostp on 27 Feb 2009, 14:58
"Gee, it sure is scout around here" is the best way to describe practically every server now. Oh well, more noob scouts running around to light on fire. :-D

Thoughts on the new unlocks:

Sandman: It's fun to knock people out with it, but I wish alt-fire hit the ball and normal fire swung the bat. How else are you supposed to bat enemy stickies? Also, the ball's hitbox for picking it up should be bigger. Right now it likes to roll into inaccessible places like under the boxcars in Well. Also, the knockout time should be halved on ubered enemies. It takes long enough for a medic to build that up, just to have some scout half a map away make it useless. (Never mind multiple Sandman-wielding scouts.) I'm not saying take the counter-uber away completely, just shorten it. I've heard people liken it to the pyro's compression blast, but at least when they're doing that you can kill them.

Force A Nature: Whee, extra jumps! But I think the knockback is overpowered; if it's made to do more damage up close, isn't sending your target 20 feet away counterintuitive? I got it, played with it for a bit, and went back to the scattergun. It does roughly the same amount of damage, but with a higher clip capacity.

Bonk!: Another fun toy to play with, but so far I find the pistol more useful.

I have no idea, but I think I trust Valve enough to expect good things from it.

I expect that it'll actually effect gameplay, though. I'd feel pretty disappointed if I just end up with a silly hat that doesn't actually do anything but look silly.

Sniper.

Quote from: Valve
It's been a couple of weeks since we posted, so we thought it'd be good to do some housekeeping. The next class pack will focus on the Sniper. It's actually shaping up to be the largest TF2 update yet, with multiple new maps and a bunch of gameplay tweaks. In addition, we've got another update in the works that should be done before the Sniper, and that one will include some new content for all classes.

I've never particularly found spies or snipers to be annoying to begin with, really. Also, as a primarily medic player, I kinda think anything that screws ubers over a bit is a good thing, on balance, so I don't really mind people having potential uber counters provided they are tricky to use. After all, we're a big asset in any sort of matchup as it is, but on pubs we're basically the hand of god and victory goes to whoever wins the halfway-decent-Medic arms race.

Someone taunted me for being a camper today! I haven't had that happen in ages, so it really felt like a blast from the past. It was funny though, because something in the guy's voice just said his heart wasn't really in it. I mean, I was working on my 9th unmolested kill in a payload map and had so far twice disrupted attempted ubers thanks to my stickies and an assist from a friendly medic. We both knew I wasn't going to merrily prance around that corner and into the loving arms of his crit rockets, so I do have to wonder a bit why he even bothered. I understand the theory behind taunting, it just doesn't hit me as worth the breath.
Title: Re: Wave goodbye to yer head, wanker

i mean, that's like taunting a spy for not just coming out and attacking you rather than sneaking around.
Title: Re: Wave goodbye to yer head, wanker
Post by: bicostp on 16 May 2009, 21:06
I mostly play Pyro. You won't believe how much "hurr W+M1 n00b!!1" I hear on public servers. (http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/5742/facepalmpd6.gif) Of course, then they accuse me of cheating as I flank them with my backburner ("omg how you get behind us?!" on levels like Dustbowl stage 3, cap 2), chop away with the Axtinguisher, and blast away with my shotgun when they're out of range.

The only time I W+M1 is on offense on payload maps. If you run laps around the cart, spraying fire everywhere, you can pretty much keep your team safe from spies. (They can try anyway if they want, and they usually do. Oh well, free kills.)
Title: Re: Wave goodbye to yer head, wanker

Title: Re: Wave goodbye to yer head, wanker
Post by: Alex C on 16 May 2009, 22:39
Oddly enough, I always thought being a good pyro is a lot like being a good medic; your aim doesn't need to be perfect but there's tons of situational awareness involved. You need to realize where players are most likely to knot up in small packs and you have to have a good feel for when a team should uber or make a big push. You then use that knowledge to rain fiery doom from above as you drop behind the opposing team and completely trash their push attempt mere moments before they would have ubered. Bonus points if you can punt a medic off a ledge with your compressor.
Title: Re: Wave goodbye to yer head, wanker
Post by: MadassAlex on 17 May 2009, 07:16
Frankly, the best thing about the Pyro class is going on axe-murdering sprees behind enemy lines. There's nothing like coming up behind a Sniper just for him to turn around soon enough to see his face get filled with iron. Oh, and the sound effects.

Yeah, that one's my favorite too. He just wants Dad to put Mum on the phone.

Also, the whole "Feelings? Look mate, you know who has a lot feelings? Blokes who bludgeon their wife to death with a golf trophy" line is pure gold. It I'm the sort of person who more or less values discipline over sentiment, so it was kinda weird knowing exactly what he meant and partly agreeing with him despite the fact that he's uh, let's just say, morally flexible. A nice reminder that it's best to find a happy medium, I guess.

Woah woah woah. I just noticed something exceedingly suspicious in the Meet the Spy Video. At the very beginning, when the Blue Soldier is looking at the wall of alert notices, there are some pretty amusing ones not lit up. But if you look into the lower-left corner, one of the possible alarms reads "leaked video". Questionable??? ?  :? :? :?

And the BLU Scout in the video has the Sandman, but he's really the RED Spy .

Does this mean Spies will be able to disguise with unlockable weapons from now on?

(Hidden to not spoil it for all 3 people who haven't watched it yet.)

I'm pretty certain that the Scout is the best character Valve has created for this game.  I sat through the Spy video chuckling basically every time he came on screen.

Also, yo mama jokes will never get old.

I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with the inevitable swarm of snipers and spies that's going to come with this update. I usually play Demoman or Medic, both of which will become pretty obsolete for a while.

I suppose I could go Pyro and set fire to everyone. Or I could just abandon all self-respect and join in the disgusting spy/sniper killfest.

TF2 is apparently free to play for this weekend. That probably won't make a difference to any of you, but I've been swamped with classwork lately and not been able to justify paying for another timewaster, as awesome as it is. So until now I have been living vicariously through the TF2 blog and all of you. For the next few days, that may change. Why must I be so busy this weekend?  :-(

Me! Played for 3 hours yesterday, got absolutely nothing, had to listen to everyone else whine about getting their 5'th Kritzkreig. Really, there wasn't anything wrong with the old system. At least achievement farmers had to do something to get the new weapons; now all you have to do is park yourself in the spawn of a 24/7 2Fort server and not play the game for a few hours.

I'm more pissed about a nasty bug with Jaratre: it completely blinds you when you're running in DX 8 mode  :x :x. (And my laptop is the only PC I have that runs the game well, and it can only run it in DX 8, so it's the only way I can play the game.  :-( )

See what I did there?

Been playing for quite a few hours since the update came out, and so far I've gotten:

- KGB (already had it)
- Sandvitch (already had it)
- Force-a-Nature (already had it)
- Razorback (actually kinda useful)
- Dead Ringer (but i don't play Spy a lot D:)
- Dead Ringer (WTF Valve I said I don't play Spy a lot)

Already threw away the extra Sandvitch, will probably trade the spare KGB for a spare Ubersaw, and I already have a friend who plays Spy a lot who's willing to trade his extra Huntsman for my extra Dead Ringer. (Now we just have to wait for them to implement that feature.)

Here's (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=639355) a thread listing guides. Helpful stuff especially for newcomers who just joined the madness of TF2 and might be a bit overwhelmed. I know I was, but you'll get used to grenades, rockets, bullets everywhere.

And damn I want that bow. Got Jarate and Cloak and Dagger watch so far.
Wish we could trade already - the watch is a complete waste in my incapable spy-hands.

Yeah the Cloak and Dagger is awesome. The charge on it runs down really fast when you're moving, so it takes a while to get wherever you want to go. But then you just find a nice spot, cloak forever and stab anyone silly enough to slow down near you.

I really want the Huntsman, though. I saw a Heavy with an arrow through his head stuck to a wall on Pipeline earlier and it was just... epic.

Title: Re: Gentlemen
Post by: Alex C on 26 May 2009, 17:32
It's closer than you'd think, particularly if you think in terms of being effective rather than merely pitching in an odd point of damage here and there. Both classes have very short windows of opportunity to work with if you expect to actually kill anyone worth bothering with rather than simply giving their medic something to do. I mean, yes, the pyro's attack technically affects a cone, so you can do a passable job of smearing scrubs and vulturing kills with one, but against a smart player (particularly soldiers and heavies) you need to roast him with everything you've got and can't really afford to leave damage potential on the table. Even then you probably should be working on your escape route the second they start turning towards you.

And when I get more points than I have ever gotten the very first time I play engineer, does this mean that engineers are really good, that I suck at everything else, that I was lucky, or something completely different?

If you play against a team that doesn't know how to coordinate their ubercharges, bonk'd Scouts or Spy/Pyro sap'n'grill frenzies to get rid of sentry-nests, it's just that easy.

Often only one halfway decent Demoman or a bit more decent Spy could be enough to eliminate a lone sentry and its Engineer.
So they are by no means overpowered, but getting rid of two or three sentries at one place requires some teamplay.

But all in all I think the learning curve for playing a defensive Engineer is lower than for playing the other classes.
You know where those pesky turtlers set up their sentries from playing other classes. So when you pack a wrench yourself you're most likely use those same spots for putting up your base.

And when I get more points than I have ever gotten the very first time I play engineer, does this mean that engineers are really good, that I suck at everything else, that I was lucky, or something completely different?
The Engineer is the class that is the easiest to play effectively, but in general how effective you can be with a certain class is heavily influenced by the map you're on, since the map layout plays to classes' strengths and weaknesses. Maps with a lot of chokepoints play well for pyros, demos and heavies and are difficult for snipers and scouts, while wide-open maps are the opposite. There's a particular map, a control-point map (where there are 5 possible, you start off with 1 and have to capture the rest) in which you can rack up 40 or 50 kills minimum in a single life as an engineer just by placing your sentry in a particular spot, making it an unavoidable defense of the control point, one that's invulnerable against everything but ubered enemies (which itself should be a problem with a good coordinated defense)

Yes, I know it's a laptop that's less than a year old. I'm running TF2 at 20-25 FPS on a 3 year old HP Pavilion dv5000 with a 2.0 ghz single-core Turion and Mobility Radeon Xpress 200m graphics. It took some serious tweaking, but it plays just fine.

Unless it has an Intel video chipset, it should run one way or another.

I believe this (http://i650.photobucket.com/albums/uu230/SirJuggles/ComputerInfo.jpg) may be what you are looking for? I'll admit that most of this is gibberish to me. I haven't messed around too much with any settings outside of the in-game options. No Intel graphics that I'm aware of. I'll admit I don't know what DX 8 is, though I'm running the most recent update of DirectX that I know of (I suspect that's what you mean?). There is also a slight chance that the bad performance is coming from the university network I'm on, though that handled BF2 just fine. All in all... well it is yet another technical mystery, which seem to crop up all too often, and if it continues it will not be the end of the world.
Title: Re: Gentlemen
Post by: Melodic on 06 Jun 2009, 10:06
DirectX 10 is the most recent DX model, but 9 is what Valve games operate in DX9 standard. If you're experiencing poor performance, you can force the game to run in DirectX 8, which will look like shite but also play better. To do so, right click on TF2 in Steam, click Properties, then Set Lanch Option. Type: "-dxlevel 80", and run.
Title: Re: Gentlemen
Post by: bicostp on 06 Jun 2009, 13:08
1.6 ghz is kind of pushing it, but it's dual-core so you might see some increase if you enable multithreading.

Start with an FPS config like this one:
http://www.gotfrag.com/tf2/forums/thread/322476/

Before you even start the game, open Task Manager and kill unnecessary services, and right-click Steam and set it to 'Low' priority. Then right-clikc explorer.exe and kill it. Your desktop and taskbar will disappear, but you can bring Task Manager back up and run explorer.exe again after you're done.

I like these launch options:

Code: [Select]
-dxlevel 80 -width 1280 -height 800 -novid -console
Only run TF2 with "-dxlevel 80" once. Before you play it again, remove that line. If you don't, the game will reset the graphics settings to the DX 8 defaults every time you start it. Set -width and -height to your screen's native resolution. -novid disables the Valve logo video, which shaves a few seconds off the load time. -console just enables the console.

Once it's started, enter these console commands one at a time:

dsp_slow_cpu 1
r_eyemove 0
fps_max 30
r_eyegloss 0

There are literally hundreds of console commands you can tinker with to squeeze more playability out of it, but these plus the config file should help a lot. :D

Adding more RAM to your laptop (get it to 2 gigs) will help too, both for gaming and general use. Also check the BIOS setup utility to see if there's a way to give the graphics chipset a bigger chunk of the shared RAM.
Title: Re: Gentlemen
Post by: SirJuggles on 06 Jun 2009, 21:06
I actually didn't go through the whole FPS config, but just those command lines combined with closing explorer did wonders. Never had a single moment of lag. Your help is very much appreciated, and I owe you a token of some sort, to be repayed at convenience.
Title: Re: Gentlemen
Post by: snalin on 07 Jun 2009, 12:06
Another alternative that allows you to play with better graphics is:

go to start->run->msconfig

click "selective startup"

Untag System.ini and win.ini

Go to the services tab, select "hide all microsoft services", and "deactivate all"

Restart, and play. It works really good, just remember to go back to "normal startup" before you start browsing the internets or downloading, since this method kills all virus protection.

The 3rd stage of Pipeline is fun as Engineer. What you do is run to the other side of the map and set up camp in that little square alcove next to the water. (There's even a convenient large ammo crate nearby.) A sentry there will hit the other team's ramp almost from start to finish. And if you build it back a little, there isn't really anything they can do about it, except for sending spies and demos in after you.

I consider it the best mode after CP push&hold. KotH is basically like the fight for the first CP on a push&hold map, only all the time with two somewhat equal teams.
I hope it takes lots of playtime away from PL, PLR and CTF 2Fort on my favourite servers.

Holy shit this game has an insane backstory now.

What does the covered portion say arrrrgh let me read it.

The picture accounts for everyone in the letter(as well as the origins of Red, Blu, Saxton Hale, and the announcer) but there's a dog. Are they hinting at the guard dog becoming a real thing?
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 30 Oct 2009, 23:15
There's also that guy hanging off the edge of the picture. I really doubt the dog is anything, or at least that there would ever be a bloody guard dog in game.

I hope these paper bag hats go away, they really don't fit with the rest of the theme. At the very least I hope my -crits -dmgspread 5cp servers pick up a -hats tag.

Okay, I have a serious question.

Can you play TF2 on PC with a 360 controller? If so, I might finally cave in and buy it. I mean, I've got it for 360 but that shit is utterly pathetic so I don't even bother anymore, and I hatehatehate keyboard+mouse controls for shooters; I just can't do it.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: Yayniall on 09 Dec 2009, 16:50
Eugh.
I'm not sure if you can, never bothered to try it but I think if you did the tracking'd be all wrong.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: LTK on 09 Dec 2009, 16:59
The store page on Steam lists Controller Enabled, so that's a Yes. Although there's a good chance you get outmaneuvered by the rest of the PC players that do have mouse/keyboard skills.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 09 Dec 2009, 19:02
Yeah, it'll probably work but you'll probably get your ass handed to you. I've seen some videos of clan games on the 360 and the individual skill of the players is only a shade higher than that of pubby randoms. I can't believe you don't like keyboard and mouse controls though. It's like someone is trying to explain why the colour red is his favourite food to me in spanish.

Also I'm terrified of this update. Please please please don't ruin the soldier. He's perfect as it is. He's more than decent at everything and if theres an improvement in any area it'll probably be too much.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: Nodaisho on 09 Dec 2009, 19:18
I think keyboard and mouse is mostly something you have to get used to, it is a lot harder at first. Mostly psychological, you just have to get to the point where you are no longer moving the mouse to move the cursor to be over the enemy. Instead you need to be pointing at the enemy. Same idea, but one is a lot more natural, compare pointing at some point on the wall with focusing on the steps of moving the muscles to get the arm to point at it. Takes longer and you aren't going to be as accurate.

If you do use the 360 controller, expect to get pretty thrashed.

OMG I LOVE VAAAAAALVEEEEEEEEEEE

I love all the insane backstory they are putting to every little thing in this game now why do they rock so much?

Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: Scandanavian War Machine on 10 Dec 2009, 10:25
It's like someone is trying to explain why the colour red is his favourite food to me in spanish.

thank you for this analogy, it gave me quite the chuckle.

And, as I've said before, it's not that hate keyboard-mouse completely...just for shooters. The reason is pretty simple: I have shaky hands and trying to shoot shit with a mouse just doesn't really work. I can use controllers fine though since both of my hands are clasped tightly onto the same object and only my thumbs are moving around, for the most part.

So yeah, I might get my ass kicked but I would get my ass kicked twenty times worse if I was using a mouse and keyboard. This, I am certain of.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: LTK on 10 Dec 2009, 11:02
You could try lowering the mouse sensitivity?
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: Scandanavian War Machine on 10 Dec 2009, 11:22
but with a gamepad, I can crank the sensitivity all the way up and be just about as fast as a mouse and I'm, you know, actually capable of aiming with it.

seems to me that lowering the sensitivity on a mouse would be way worse of a gimp than using a controller with sensitivity turned up.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 10 Dec 2009, 17:26
If you've got enough space to move your mouse around (and mouse with your whole arm rather than just your wrist) lower sensitivity really helps you aim precisely. I use a sensitivity which gives me 7" to turn 180 degrees, though I've only got about 12" of space to play with. My ability to put rockets and bullets where I want them got hugely greater after migrating to that from something like 4"/180. Other things like turning off mouse acceleration helps with your consistency a lot too. Mostly it's about not being afraid to throw your mouse around and finding a neat balance between twitching and precision (in the past I've used keybinds that toggle between something like 5"/180 and 12"/180 so that I can have the sensitivity I want when I want it; the settings are there to be changed). I used to shake quite a bit in some games but that goes away as you get confident. I don't know how you'd rocket jump though, I guess you could use scripts for that.

That's not to say you shouldn't use a gamepad if you're more comfortable with that though. I'm really not trying to make you change.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: Scandanavian War Machine on 10 Dec 2009, 17:31
oh, yeah absolutely. If I get it I'll definitely experiment with the mouse and keyboard and see if I can't can't find an optimal setting for me, and maybe get a little more practiced with it.

but i have nightmares (actual nightmares) about playing STALKER and Crysis and fuck who knows how many other games ON EASY where I just couldn't even hang in a firefight against more than one or two dudes. Online against other people would only be worse and I don't think I'm commited enough to put in the time to even become "okay" at it.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 10 Dec 2009, 18:47

Dunno, but they are hyping up the weapon, not saying what it is, giving more weapons to one class than any other (which you know would get a lot of unnecessary complaining), and it would be hilarious getting everybody playing their preferred class out of the two to get, say, a water gun shaped like a rocket launcher.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 10 Dec 2009, 23:46
On the other hand maybe they had three unlocks they really liked and couldn't decide which one to drop.

Demos are gonna win this so hard though :(. Every time it's been soldiers vs demos it's been demos camping soldiers back into their spawn. Area denial is much, much more useful than straight up combat ability. 5cp maps are playing much better than those awful goldbowl maps but finding a server running them is tough.

Solider is the only class I'm totally useless at, even worse that I'm at sniper, and that's quite bad. I just loathe the slow running speed, and I'm never able to figure out rocket jumping, and hitting stuff that's moving...

Demoman, on the other hand, is really, really fun. People have a tendency to never look out for sticky fields, ever.

As opposed to the class that just requires you to lay landmines and wait for someone to come around the corner? With as much as people get thrown around by rockets, you really have to aim if they aren't coming straight at you through a hallway. I actually was really sucking when I went back on day before yesterday, had to switch to scout because I just wasn't able to juggle anybody after my time not playing, and the mouse sensitivity just wasn't quite right.

I've been playing solider the last days because, damn, I'm not able to make a positive contribution on the demoman side, so why not just play this one and make a negative one here?

Turns out solider is a lot of fun. Can't figure out the rocket jumping, though (I just go straight up, I want to go bloody forward at an angle more than 45 degrees), but the effectiveness at middle distance makes it quite fun. I think I'll be happy with both sides winning.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 14 Dec 2009, 15:59
On rocket jumping:

There are tons of different ways to jump and most of them have uses. Running forward and shooting down is pretty crappy but it's good for getting on top of relatively low things if you've got time without taking fall damage. Adding in crouch jumping and jump crouching gets you other heights and amounts of control. To get more distance you want to put rockets behind you rather than under you. So you've got to strafe and twitch and airstrafe to get it all to work together.

As you get better you'll want to use walls rather than the floor. You take less selfdamage and you get more momentum. When you're running past a corner jump crouch or crouch jump flick behind you and shoot the wall. You can do it even better with walls running parallel to you and then airstrafing around and that's the ideal jump for distance.

Watch videos on youtube and then practice, practice, practice. Try to make jumps you're not sure you can make because if you don't you'll never get them. Yes, you'll fuck up and land in the middle of them more often than not to start with but once you start getting it right the soldier really starts to shine.

The soldiers major strength isn't his effectiveness in the middle distance but his ability to get into the middle distance.

Alternately: charging across the map at superspeed, taking 65% less damage from explosives, and hitting with a critical on the sentry from your sword. Like a real man.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 14 Dec 2009, 23:53
Sentries don't take extra damage from crits and hopefully the knockback from the sentry will fling a demo around as much as it does a bonked scout. But yeah, pipes and the rest of the team will still work just as well.

Giving up stickies is a huge price to pay and I don't see this getting much play outside of desperate final cap defenses and dicking around in pubs, though taking 65% less damage from regular demos and sollies could make them a useful utility on some maps if the one demo rule gets relaxed to a one sticky launcher rule.

Zombie, since when do crits not work on sentries? I haven't played much in a while, but I distinctly remember killing sentries with the benefit of a crit rocket as a soldier. Level 2s and 3s, with engineers healing them.
Title: Re: Mentlegen

I don't think they ever have. You probably killed the engie and the sentry in one fell swoop.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 15 Dec 2009, 01:45
Yeah crit rockets help against sentries because it kills the engy (engies repair sentries incredibly fast, two hits to full health). You don't actually do any more damage to the sentry though.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: Nodaisho on 15 Dec 2009, 04:28
But normal rockets take four to kill a level 3 unattended, and it only took 2, maybe 3 when that happened. Huh. That is odd, maybe it's the damage spread being low when I finally managed to kill one that was by itself by myself, and high when I hit with the crits.

Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 15 Dec 2009, 04:54
Oh, it's probably because crits don't suffer damage falloff.

Your normal rocket does a bit over 100 damage at very close range, but that drops down to less than 50 at very long range. Crits don't have this so you'll drop a sentry in two rockets (sentries have up to 216 hp) from any range if you're kritzed.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: Nodaisho on 15 Dec 2009, 15:21
Ah, okay. See, when I played TF2 constantly was before I realized how useful paying attention to the damage sheets people made could be. All I knew was that 2 rockets killed the 125 health classes, 2 good scout shotgun blasts took out the 125 health classes, and 6 scout shotgun blasts would take out a heavy, if he doesn't turn and shred me first.

Am I the only one that doesn't understand why a rocket does less damage at long range?
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 15 Dec 2009, 15:42
Balance. And that everything (bar the sniper rifle, huntsman, stickies and the flaregun) do less damage at range. It's to encourage people to come up into closer range where fights are more exciting and busy (and fun).

So a smaller blast radius, but still the same damage within the radius, right? So you can still do good damage aiming at their feet? I might like that, especially since it goes 80% faster and does more damage. Having rockets go at different speeds is going to make a pyro's life annoying for a while.
Title: Re: Mentlegen

Referring to rocket velocity afaik. However more damage on a direct hit so if you time your shot with another soldier you might be able to alpha strike the thing from mid-short range like you do with two snipers at long (except you don't have to charge your shots).

There's pretty much a complete symmetry between the demo and soldier updates. Both got a more professional, skill-based version of their main function, both got a secondary alternate that provides a buff, both got a scaling melee that rewards the brave.

Very well done update.

no it means you can run right up to someone and hit them with that insane new rocket launcher and take like 0 damage.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: Nodaisho on 17 Dec 2009, 19:42
Have you tried it, or are you just imagining the worst? You usually take only half the damage you would be taking from hitting yourself with a rocket during a rocket jump, it doesn't eliminate damage completely, so you are still doing a good bit of damage to yourself if you try to go close-quarters rocketing. And you lose your shotgun, four rockets go really quickly, if you aren't hitting and running you are going to need your shotgun, those boots aren't worth it. The pickaxe, maybe, the new rocket launcher, as long as you have good aim, the flag, doubtful, maybe a few situations, but the boots? I wouldn't use them unless I was playing on some gimmick map that needs lots of rocket jumps.

I'm more worried about the demoman's new grenade launcher, that one seems to have no real downside. Seriously, the only weakness of a demoman's defense, aside from the possibility of the pyro compressed air thing or a spy, was that he only has one set, he blows those and he is out until he sets up more. The new launcher means he can't set grenades at a CP and then go to a different one, so what? Anyone that isn't a scout taking the last flag is going to make sure to scatter the grenades before they move on the CP, so it doesn't really matter. He can set 16 grenades now. One sticky grenade with a bit of luck kills a full health scout, spy, sniper, or engineer, two will kill anything without a health boost except for the heavy, those grenades are extremely powerful. And now he can set up a corridor of death with 4, 6, or 8 groups of them. That part won't require you to be a skilled demoman, just a patient camper.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 17 Dec 2009, 20:38
And you can blow up your stickies through walls. Also you can leave a sticky at friendly sentry farms and blow up enemy stickies just before they kill the sentries. I'm finding it easier to fight close quarters with provided I'm retreating or already have stickies strewn about. You've just gotta aim at the stickies under their feet. It's a terrible weapon.

The self damage from shooting people at 0 range with the rocket launcher was seriously never a problem and the shotgun is way too useful to give up. [edit] if you're touching the ground the boots have no effect. If you're not they soak up one hell of a lot of it, though you still take fall damage.

Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: snalin on 18 Dec 2009, 10:28
I'd really like to see different sentries, and maybe some kind of easy to build jump-pads to move your entire team vertically. Or traps. Allow them to make mechanical traps. Or to build several upgradeable level 1 sentries-

Or let them pick up other player's equipment and use it to power up their sentries.

They're probably going to make a new shotgun for him. One that makes repairs cheaper and ugrades more expensive or the other way around. or something else boring. I want more stuff like the new demoman melee pack or the huntsman or other upgrades that radically changes the way you play a class.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 18 Dec 2009, 16:20
When did the solly and demo get an update before?

The spy/dispenser glitch happens because both dispensers and sappers are "build 0" buildings. It works because the game thinks you're building a sapper.

I actually like the new sticky launcher. It's great when you're retreating or on defense. The difficulties in sticky jumping are fine because the heavily defensively slanted weapon is slower to attack with. I also can't wait to see some of the cool trickjumps it'll let you do.

I really question the balance of demos getting up to having the second biggest amount of hp, the second fastest speed, explosive and fire resistances and a free gtfo out button every ten seconds. You can't avoid melee with them and you have no chance to get out of it once you're there and unless you're a kgb heavy they're probably better at it than you are.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: Nodaisho on 19 Dec 2009, 01:59
I thought medics were the second fastest?

It isn't bad for me, since I always either play soldier (running straight at me? Thanks for making it easy to juggle you) or scout (think of the demoman with the targe as the bull, and the scout the matador), but it will be interesting to see how the balance plays out. I wonder how the pyro will do as well, it probably depends on the demo's health (thinking about the eyelander), whether they can dodge the charge and whether they can compressed air blast the demo to stop the charge (that would be pretty cool), 50% less damage won't stop a good pyro from doing damage really quick, and even if the demo survives, he's going to be needing a medic or a medpack to avoid dying shortly afterward.

Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: Nodaisho on 19 Dec 2009, 02:28
They might get a stun and a mini-crit, though. I expect it will be pretty easy to hit someone with a short-range charge, just tougher to hit with the long range charge, since they see you coming and have an easier time dodging behind something you can't avoid (if you can even aim you charge after starting it).

Of course, if you have your pickaxe, you get more and more dangerous the more they hit you. Anyone get that yet to see if there is any change in damage or firing rate, something to make it possibly worse than the shovel?
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: McTaggart on 19 Dec 2009, 23:19
The second fastest class is a buffed eyelander demo or a very hurt soldier. And as a medic I can't do a thing about the demo.

I believe the pick does less damage to start with and know you can't get healed or ubered when you have it out. It's excellent for playing long, but if you're pocket I think the shovel is preferable.
Title: Re: Mentlegen
Post by: snalin on 20 Dec 2009, 08:52
A sword-wielding demo is piece of cake as a scout. Really, when they don't have the stickies, downing them anywhere with a bit of open space around you just became way to easy if you are a fast bugger with a shotgun. But I still want to know if the air-blast, FAN and turrets can push charging demomen back, since a demoman able to charge without getting pushed by a sentry is a perfect target for invunerability. Run up there and pump out nades faster than the engineer can heal? Oh yeah. But then again, it's a question about if the medic can keep a close enough distance for the demoman not to loose the invun, and inevitable his life.

there's a bit too many demos and soldiers on the servers now, though. I'm just hoping to pick up their stuff as scout or heavy, since I mostly play them, since I seem to pick up more backburners than anything else, even if I never play pyro.

I'm 99% certain that in the TF2 universe, Civil War Pyro was Abraham Lincoln.

Also of note: 1890 Engineer is Nikola Tesla, Sniper is Davy Crockett, Medic might be Louis Pasteur, Scout might be Billy the Kid, and I'm sure everyone else is someone too, but I can't identify them.

If they threw in fictional people, I'm sure Heavy is John Henry.

The doctor is a toughie, since there's a number of big names from that era. I figured it was Robert Koch, a Nobel Prize winner who isolated tuberculosis and cholera. It's tough get more 1890s than cholera and tuberculosis.

And look at 'im!

I guess era and age probably doesn't matter that much though, now that I think about it, since Crockett had already led a pretty damn full life by the Alamo, so even assuming he lived through that he'd have been hella old by 1890. At the very least he's inspired by 'im though.

Just consider it a reverse of the real Australia: all Australians here are intelligent, pleasant, civilized people, but Australia is a place where technology is shunned and distrusted by the government forcing the people into a Luddite nightmare.

(Or it's just ****ing hilarious. Also of note: look on the last page. Radigan Conagher built three immortality machines but the last name is obscured. What's going on?)

third one is the announcer?

I'm guessing no.

I'm thinking it's a reference to the last person mentioned in Zepheniah Mann's will (http://www.teamfortress.com/pumpkinpatch/the_last_will_and_testament_of_Zepheniah_Mann/) and cut out of the side of this picture of them (http://www.teamfortress.com/pumpkinpatch/family_portrait/).

The Announcer seems to have either independently come across some other form of immortality to still be the same age in 1890 or is Elizabeth's descendant.

The nerdy conspiracy theorist in me really wants this mystery person to end up being Cave Johnson, founder of Aperture Science.

EDIT: Meanwhile, preparation for the Engie update has begun with this (http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Golden_Wrench) being snuck into the game with the last update.

There's also two versions of the engineer update page, one without the shotgun revealing some additional jokes underneath:

I also just converted every last weapon I've ever earned into metal to try to get it.

I hate you Valve.

holy shit we can move buildings now
Title: Re: Move that gear up!

You can make the new Engineer wrench by crafting an Ambassador with scrap metal. It doesn't swing any faster or get random crits, but it does have a bleed effect like the wood Sniper kukri.

Moving buildings is awesome as long as you have a bodyguard. When you're carrying a building, you slow down and can't switch from the toolbox, so you're completely vulnerable. Also if you die while you're moving a building, your building is destroyed along with the toolbox it's in.

I can't wait for the inevitable "Uber engineer carries a L3 sentry behind enemy lines" flanking maneuvers!

Title: Re: The Mann-Conomy Update
Post by: Alex C on 30 Sep 2010, 17:13
Nope. I'm getting sort of tired of public servers sucking because people think it's "humiliating" to get killed with the fish, leading to 3 or 4 scouts per side whether it makes sense or not. The first time I got fish killed I was playing a Medic and was on fire at the time and two scouts were chasing me. That's not humiliating; that's just Team Fortress.

I am so pissed about this update.

Because they made everything you had before it went live 'Vintage'. Which is cool.

But I smelted everything I owned to try to get a golden wrench.

And I am furious with rage. I want to punch a hippie.

Me too. Late last night I smelted my last Natascha too. I don't use Natascha but this still bothers me.

Sometimes I think I'm the only person who genuinely enjoys playing medic. It's the improvising moments to be unusually aggressive that makes it worthwhile. Just now, my uber target got blown off the tower by a sticky bomb so I charged the enemy demoman while still uber and sawed his ass before switching back to my medigun (with a bit of uber left to spare) again in order to make back it to the point and finish capping it. I just don't think it occurred to him that I might do that.
