Oh.
Yeah, it's new.
Just seemed a little far fetched with the huge apple ad complete with page interaction.
Overall it's a pretty great. A much needed layout redesign that's finally delivered them from their late-90s look.
But yeah, it's a huge ad.
-
Yeah, but that's for real(!) Apparently they're doing an all request thing too where people who buy passes get to vote online for all their favorite songs and the band will then play the songs with the most votes or something. Pretty cool.
Also, I go to Pitchfork occasionally for music news stuff so the layout change comes as a surprise. I don't like it. And if they always have ads like that on top of the page it's going to make me like it a hell of a lot less.
-
Ads? Seriously? Why are you even seeing ads (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865)?
As far as the layout, it looks terrible. There's what, like 1/20th of the front page devoted to daily reviews? I guess they've decided that being a music portal is more important than reviewing records.
-
Oh god, I disabled adblock to see what the hell you all where going on about and it was horrible. I'm glad I have Firefox.
-
Remember when Pitchfork used to be brown, guys?
-
Adblock is an awful program - the ads are rarely intrusive, if ever, and you are stripping each of the websites you view of the revenue they need to stay operational.

HOLY SHIT STEVE EARLE IS MAKING A TOWNES VAN ZANDT TRIBUTE ALBUM
Dude, you should have read the article, Tom Morello is playing a guitar solo on it what the fuck
-
Christ, I don't even know what to look at on that page. Shit's all over the place!

What are you talking about? The Reviews tab is the first one on the menu, and the reviews are placed front and center with about one third of the top column dedicated to it.
Here's the daily review section in relation to the front page.

After thinking about it more, what really irks me is that you have to mouse-over the review thumbnails to see the band name, album title, and summary blurb. I can't just scan the page to see if there are any albums I like. Oddly, the reviews page (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/) has the band and album names but doesn't have thumbnails or blurbs.
From the overall layout, it seems like the mouse-over feature was added to reduce the size of the reviews section, and increase the size of the news and pitchfork.tv bars at the top of the page. That’s why I felt that Pitchfork was looking more like a music portal than a music-review site. Which is fine if that's what they want to do, but it seems to me like it's another step away from what the site was at its heyday.

Ughh, hate this layout. I'm sure it'll grow on me, but not right away.
-
I think the new layout is fail. More importantly though I keep getting 504 Gateway Time-outs.

I disable it for certain sites, like the comic.
-
I disable it for nothing. Advertising is an unwanted intrusion into my life and I do my best to minimise its effects.
-
Little bit off subject, but I'm quite excited for April Fool's Day.
-
I don't use adblock but I use flashblock. flashblock just turns the flash into a little play button if you wanna view it.
jpeg ads still render but irritating animated and sound flash ads can fuck right off.
-
Sometimes adverts tell me about something I legitimately want to know.
-
I don't use ad-block because it screws up youtube videos and turns them invisible until I scroll them to a certain position, at which point they become visible again.
-
Not only do I use adblock, I use noscript, which disables all Java and XSS content on a website unless I specifically allow it to play.
-
I just turn off adblock on sites where I actually care if they make money (webcomics etc)

There don't show Beat Happening ads on the internet, old man.
-
I liked the old brown pitchfork better. I like brown.

Ditto. I’m not using my bandwidth to download ads, or to play annoying, unwanted and possibly malicious Javascript. If I want to support a website, I’ll buy their merch.
-
this is slightly annoying if you only check the site once a fortnight....i shudder to think what the people on dial up will think of it though
-
Prithee sir, what is this dial-up of which ye speak? Forsooth, must be a thing of great antiquity, for I know it not.
-
Strange indeed are the traveler's tales of "dial-an-internet".
-
I have to do a CTRL-F5 if I want the page to refresh properly, that seems kind of stupid.
