Title: Six Nations 2009 "spoiler"
Post by: arkhym on 21 Mar 2009, 13:12
Ireland have won the six nations 2009 competition beating Wales, with it the Grand Slam and the Triple Crown. One of the most nerve racking matches I have ever watched I have no finger nails left after that. Thank god for O'gara at the end with that dropkick and O'Driscoll desvered the man of the match.

Breaking news! Men from one country manipulate ball more skillfully than men from another country!

This is just something we haven't seen before.

Well I for one am glad to know this. Seeing as, you know, I live in one of the six nations and next to another. And I heard something about how this was a fairly rare match because it decided two or three things at the same time? Is that the Grand Slam and Triple Crown thing? I don't know much about sport but I thought that sounded pretty cool (and what are the chances of the same two teams being in the final of three competitions at once?)

What I'm partly trying to say is, guys don't be dicks just because you don't really care. What I'm also saying is, it's fun living near Wales when they lose a major sporting event.

It is. Last time Ireland won the Grand Slam, no-one on this forum (except for one or two folk) was alive. Hell, Ireland winning at anything is rare enough.

Also I pity the poor folk who were actually watching this - I was baking, and merely caught the last kick of the game, and my tension level instantly shot up about seventy-four thousand billion hundred percent.

The Triple Crown is contested by England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales as part of the championship. If any one team manages to win all their games against the other three then they win the Triple Crown. A Grand Slam is when one team in the championship manages to beat all the others during the competition. Last time Ireland won a grand slam was 61 years ago.

So this isn't the thing where they decided that one match would decide two championships or whatever they were? I didn't really listen to the news report so I can't even remember what sport it was.

I would say more dismissive than indignant.

Ireland needs to stop playing Rugby and get back to shooting British soldiers. They have better success rates at that.

I'd prefer that they stick to rugby, personally. (http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe/03/07/northern.ireland.shooting/)

Either way there is a good chance somebody will be maimed/killed so what's really the difference?

My father is Irish and my Mum doesn't give a hoot about rugby, so I followed this tournament with massive support for Ireland, and I was walking on air yesterday when they won. I was at work, and basically spent the last ten minutes of the game doing nothing, just watching. Wales being awarded that last kick made my heart drop, and when the ball sailed just under the bar I was absolutely ecstatic.

Watching O'Driscoll lift that cup was without a doubt the highlight of 2009 so far for me.

That and the fact that Arsenal won 3 - 1 against Newcastle United in the Premier League and London Irish beat Northampton Saints 32 - 27 in the Guinness Championship pretty much outweighed the fact I worked a 20 hour weekend on pretty much no sleep whatsoever.

So yeah. Sports!

They should make it the 5 nations since scotland just stopped putting up a fight.

Hey now, dare to dream. Just look at how Wales are going these days, they're the best they've been since the 70s. In thirty years Scotland could be good again, too!

Man that is totally unfair. Italy have gone from being the laughing stock of European rugby to being fairly all right in eight or nine years.

I watched this final, normally I hate sport, but I still watched this.

God, it was tense.
