Title: Phil In The Circle.
Post by: Avec on 07 Apr 2009, 16:43
I give you one of my favorite modern artisans. He's developed a lot of his reputation over the internet and he usually updates a new video on youtube weekly.

Just to keep this thread interesting I'll ask this; who's your current favorite?

Is artisan the word to use? I do not necessarily think so.

Portrait of Jimmy is excellent.

What are you talking about?

You just generalized a whole field. It's like saying all music is the same, or in your view, it all sucks because someone else invented something similar to it before. That's true, but then you're saying that everything imaginable has been portrayed in art, which is clearly not true, nor is it falsifiable.

Jeans, I'm still trying to figure out what the artist you posted is going for. It's strange, it's something I've never seen before, but I like it.

Actually that whole nudity portfolio is a really cool thing. Also Jens, I am not going to forgive you for dropping that video in the Pointless thread a while back. I still get creeped out thinking of that moment when he first covers his mouth and then slits it open again.

Hate to ask, but does anyone remember who the artist (or artists) is who does the really big perspective drawings? Like, simple shapes painted across multiple buildings that can only be seen from the other side of the river...

If you're talking about Chuck Close, I don't think he did anything with buildings.  His paintings do have to be viewed from a distance, but they're on large canvasses and the distance is a few meters.

In recent times I've enjoyed the creations of Posterboy.

Just a photo set I remember stumbling across a while back. Basically looked like someone had taken a photo of a block of wharf-front warehouses and then photoshopped some red and green squares and spirals and things across them, and the light poles, and trees, and everything in the way. But supposedly an artist had actually gone and painted these lines so they only joined up into the desired shapes when you stood in one spot on the other side of the water. There were some smaller works along the same lines, but that one picture sticks in my mind. Don't remember much about the artist in question. I may have found it when I was doing some research on graffiti artists.

I'd actually like to see that. Sounds like an interesting take on anamorphoses.

If that is even a word in english.

Since Bansky came to Jamaica, and that giant controversy, I don't even know if I want to keep up with him. Plus, the guitar playing Rat stencil on the gully-side he did is washing off, and that makes me sad.

That Bansky fellar is amazing.

Thanks for introducing me to him!

(What happened in Jamaica?)
