Title: Re: RAPPERS GO HOME
Post by: MrBlu on 12 Apr 2009, 15:11
It's not racist, but your remembrance made me remember (aye) about when I used to frequent GaiaOnline forums (oh boy), specifically the Rap/Hip-Hop/R&B forum. Occasionally, some idiot would make a thread in the forum titled "Rap Sucks" or "Rap is Crap" or something of the sort (the ones that thought they were witty said "you can't spell crap without rap").

Interestingly enough, a lot of them had pasty white faced avatars and some of them would say something along the lines of "all rap sucks except for Eminem."

I didn't think it was a coincidence.

fun trivia: the two fastest-selling rap albums of all time (last time i checked) are "licensed to ill" by the beastie boys and "the marshall mathers LP" by eminem. i'm not sure if this is also just a coincidence but i found that pretty interesting when i first learned that.

Wait, all the music I listen to is made by white people. I do not have a single song in my collection that is made by anyone with any other skin color. How did this happen? I mean, I know there's not many black people playing metal, but there should at least be a couple of japanese singers in my collection? But, alas, my mp3 files is whiter than Hitlerjugend. I haven't ever thought about it, but wtf?

I listen a bit to black metal, but I don't think that counts, since they are, you guessed right, white (http://www.quizilla.com/user_images/G/GhoulTemple/1091261301_Black.jpg)

Ice Ice Baby is also the first hip hop song to hit number 1 on the billboard charts.

Someone else mentioned this to me today. Is it anywhere near as funny as it sounds?

Synopsis is, Veronica makes fun of Betty for something (something involving some rice crispy treats that Betty made), and Betty goes off into a bookstore with her treats to be sad by herself. Two "Goth" girls go up to her and make friends with her because she makes awesome snacks. Betty, after realizing that Goths aren't "too cool for everyone else" and that they "just dress that way" (I'm so serious, they said that), she lets them take her away to the land of bats and SAOSIN and black eyeliner, and the three of them walk past Veronica and the others, and they marvel at her new appearance and crowd.

I thought it was so weird and enlightening when I read it first. I think I was 9. Now I look back on it and realize that Archie comics are just as bad as Disney channel. If I can find the comic (my sister's massive collection), I'll scan and post them up.

I'm pretty sure it says "Sigh". I deduce this from the fact that the image is called "sigh-band.jpg", and furthermore the fact that if you squint it looks like it says "Sigh".

Sigh is a pretty wussy name for a band, guys.

"Knights In Satan's Service" is actually an amazing band name.

As for "Sigh", it kinda sounds badass if you take away the English implications. Remember that this is a Japanese band.

To be on topic, rap is horribly misrepresented in the mainstream. It was pretty cool when it was about the beat-down working class facing adversity and their general rage. Now it's just disgustingly ironic - rich tough-guys flapping about their assets. Also it is now pretty boring and not clever, like a genre almost entirely based in lyrical skill should be.

I think we have to remember that RatM are pretty much closer to what traditional rap and hip-hop was than any mainstream act considered rap or hip-hop.

It's a very similar cycle to punk rock, isn't it?
Title: Re: RAPPERS GO HOME
Post by: MadassAlex on 14 Apr 2009, 08:01
Unfortunately.

And while I'm bitching about trends in music I dislike, let me state my hatred for the concept that punk rock is all about being as simple as possible.

People have to look at it in context of the times. Punk rock emerged in an era saturated in bands that used instrumental wank for no specific purpose and couldn't hold a candle to the likes of Hendrix, Sabbath, Deep Purple and other bands that begun the trend of lengthy instrumental sections. Most punk rockers of the time were also financially poor, so they couldn't afford the resources that would allow them to become highly skilled at their instruments. Many couldn't even afford their own instruments and had to borrow from friends.
In the context of the times, yes, punk rock was all about extreme simplicity and being obnoxiously irreverent.

But we now live in an age where almost everyone who lives in a physically stable location has access to the internet, and therefore, free access to numerous resources that'll allow them to become skilled at their chosen instrument given passion and time. I think it's great if people like that simple sound of punk. More power to them. But developing only basic skill in your instrument implies that you don't care very much, which begs the question: why even make music in the first place? If you don't care enough to learn your shit properly, I'm pretty sure you're not trying to express anything, anyway.

What I'm saying here is that punk isn't a sound. It's working-class rage at abusive power structures. Thrash metal, as a genre, is way more punky than most modern bands considered "punk". The same applies to old-school hip-hop and rap, in my mind.

We are at a point where genres that are not punk are more punky than punk.

Didn't someone say about punk rock that bands who still pretend to not know how to play their instruments after playing them for a certain amount of time are obvious are just being silly?

I'm sure someone did. Can't remember who though. I think it was about the Ramones, or something like that.
Title: Re: RAPPERS GO HOME
Post by: valley_parade on 14 Apr 2009, 08:38
More likely about the Sex Pistols and Sid's infamous lack of playing ability.

Though, I did hear that any time you hear a solo on a Ramones album, it's almost NEVER Johnny playing it.

I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but in some documentary about early punk that I saw, Chrissie Hynde said something like "of course punk died. Any of us who cared enough to do this for a living eventually got good at what we did, which is what happens, and that was the end of punk."

Also, the Archie comic about goths. (http://joeydevilla.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2005/10/shes_goth_to_have_it.jpg)

But Tania, they helped her get her friends to notice her! Goths are nice people and you shouldn't judge, okay.

(Also I do apparently have quite a few albums by bands with black and other non-white members, like TV on the Radio and Love and All Girl Summer Fun Band and Bad Brains and Birthday Suits and Kimya Dawson and Prince) (come to actually look at what I have on my iTunes, I probably have more than 12.5% [even not counting bday suits])

(Upon further reflection, none of that music by black people I listen to is what is commonly considered to be Black music at all, all folk and pretty and maybe rock HMM)

The only way he doesn't fit in with the rest of my list though is that he's more famous. None of any of those musicians, like I said, play music that would normally be considered "Black" music. Though I'm guessing it's more of a class status thing than a racial thing maybe?
